Our cover story this edition is on Eatons Hill resident Julia Baker, whose TV show Snake Sheila is being broadcast in 170 countries around the world. Julia had a dream – to start her own snake catching business – which morphed into the Animal Planet show that follows her snake adventures around Brisbane. She is not the only local emerging TV star. Samford’s Melina Vidler is starring alongside Logie winner Erik Thomson (Packed to the Rafters, All Saints) in new Channel Seven series 800 Words. There has been a few Samford locals regularly appearing on TV in various capacities in recent years, from Marnie Meredith on the home shopping channel TVSN, Martin Bowerman on Great South East and Creek to Coast, and Nick Meredith’s work as a sideline reporter for Fox Sports’ A-League football coverage. Another local, Cashmere’s Tayla Harris, was on TV this week, presenting an award at AFL night of nights the Brownlow Medal. approach,” Mr Roy said. “That (change) has to come from government, from business and from the media. “The other thing that we need to do is we need to look at how we invest capital, to attract talent to this country, to go into these new start-ups (businesses). “Last year we spent $200 million on the Melbourne Cup, but we only invested $100 million in venture capital on our start-ups.” Mr Roy also wants to see greater cooperation between higher education, science researchers and the private sector. “We do great research, we have great ideas, but we’re not succeeding to the extent that we should when it comes to commercialisation of those ideas,” he said. Although clearly passionate about his new role, Mr Roy sought to put his local constituency at ease by reaffirming his commitment to them. “My local community is and always will be my number one priority. I will remain incredibly focused on that,” he said.

ember for Longman Wyatt Roy was rewarded well in Malcolm Turnbull’s brutal Federal Government reshuffle, which saw senior Ministers demoted to the backbench. At 25, Mr Roy is now Assistant Minister for Innovation within the department headed by Christopher Pyne. Since his appointment on 21 September, Mr Roy has been enthusiastically promoting his goals in his new role. He said if Australia were to continue its 25-year stretch of uninterrupted economic growth, the country would need to diversify its economy and embrace innovation. He believes Australia’s entrepreneurship culture needs to be improved. “The first thing, which I think is the most important, and the Prime Minister has spoken at great length about this, is changing our Australian culture so that we are embracing aspiration and entrepreneurship in our collective psyche and we are rejecting that ‘tall poppies’

Snake lady scaling new heights
A
Lisa Schuhmann, Laceys Creek Lisa is the secretary of Dayboro Trail Riders, a horse riding club founded in 1994, which hosts its annual Big October Ride this weekend. How I got involved in horse riding… I always had an obsession with horses since I was very young. I remember walking behind a horse at Centennial Park in Sydney when I was only four and getting kicked but that didn’t scare me away from them – I was always going to ride. My first memories of riding horses… When I was 12, I started to save my $1 a week pocket money and then go riding at The Gap for one hour, which used to cost $5. The best things about the Dayboro Trail Riders… We get to ride on private property where we wouldn’t usually be able to go and see wonderful views. What I love about the Big October Ride… The ride is very scenic and has been varied over the years with a choice of a short or long ride. Riding out of the showgrounds along the main street is always amazing to watch with up to 200 horses and riders at a time. If I could go for a horse ride anywhere in the world… It would be amazing to ride in Connemara, Ireland where our ponies originated from. If I could invite any three people to dinner… My hilarious neighbour Walter and Stig Rasta and Elina Born who were Estonia’s entry for Eurovision this year. The best piece of advice I have been given… “Listen to advice but if you have a strong feeling about something then follow your own instincts.” If a movie were made about my life I would be played by… Michelle Morgan from Heartland. If I was Prime Minister… I would get lots of trails opened up for horse riders, mountain bikers and walkers to share and enjoy. The Big October Ride is on 3-4 October, departing from the Dayboro Showgrounds. For more information go to www.dayborotrailriders.com.au or phone 3425 1643.

Eatons Hill snake catcher Julia Baker is the star of new TV series Snake Boss.
world. Detailing Julia Baker’s work as a snake catcher, Snake Boss will premiere on Australian television next week. Assisted by her partner Johnny Gallacher and their Jack Russell terrier, the wildlife warrior is showing the world how she digs out unwanted slithering visitors from backyards, beds and bathrooms around Brisbane, which has more dangerous snakes than any other capital city. Known as Snake Sheila overseas, the show is already broadcast in 170 countries including South Africa and parts of the Middle East and Europe. “I’ve always had quite an interest in exotic animals,” Julia said. “Animals do not scare me at all – well maybe cockroaches do – but I’ve never had a fear of snakes.” A former pastry chef who worked in fivestar hotels, her interest in snakes began a decade ago. “We were at Australia Zoo and they had this beautiful Burmese Python so I had a picture taken with it,” Julia recalls. “Everybody else was horrified and scared and I was looking at the reaction of the people and I’m looking at this poor snake that’s… a misunderstood creature. “When they put the snake around my shoulders and took a picture I literally,
“It grew from there. From having a pet snake I met somebody who was a snake catcher. “I thought that was brilliant. I could actually go out and experience more snakes but in the wild and help people and educate them.” After founding her business 1300-CatchIt, the idea for Snake Boss was hatched three years ago. “I did dream pretty big, I was hoping that it would reach the world, and it has,” Julia said of the show, which is narrated by Jamie Dunn of Agro fame. “We’ve doubled the ratings overseas already.” One of just a handful of women in Australia relocating snakes for a living, Julia’s mission is to “shine a completely different light” on snakes and help people understand and not fear the creatures. “I’ve got two very, very strong missions or objectives in my life, and one is to educate people about reptiles and snakes,” she said. “They are the underdog, they are misunderstood and it’s not fair at all. “The other objective is to inspire people, that no matter what age you are you can pursue your dreams and go after them.” Snake Boss will premiere on Discovery Channel–Animal Planet on 5 October, and will screen every Monday at 9.30pm.
absolutely fell in love with it… and we kind of made a connection.” “Falling into a bit of a hole” following a marriage breakdown, Julia wrote a ‘bucket list’ of life goals – which included snakes. “I went and got myself a pet snake, I went out and got myself an acting diploma, I got my motorbike licence, did stand-up comedy,” she said.

ess than 11 hours after an ailing Harry Bowes went to a doctor he was having the first radiation treatment in his fight against cancer. Diagnosed with leukaemia in August, the teenager from Ocean View has been receiving chemotherapy treatment in Brisbane’s Royal Brisbane Hospital since. “He was sent for x-rays at 11 o’clock in the morning, by 7.30 that night they were told he had leukaemia, and he was having radiation treatment at 9pm,” family friend Nicole Sykes explains. Harry’s parents, Mark and Malynda, had to give up work to be with their ill 15-year-old son at the hospital. “They have actually had to move into the Leukaemia Foundation Village at Dutton Park because he (Harry) has to be so close to the hospital,” Ms Sykes said. “He has just done another round of chemo and had to go in every day and get blood transfusions and everything else that’s horrible that he has to go through. “It can happen to anybody. You can be a healthy, everyday kid one day and then this can happen.” The Dayboro community has banded together to help out the Bowes family, with extraordinary results. The Help For Haz appeal has surpassed its initial fundraising goal of $10,000, which has floored the Bowes family. Harry’s school, Pine Rivers State High School at Strathpine, is also supporting the family. “They’re extremely grateful and appreciative and totally overwhelmed,” Ms Bowes said. “They’re givers themselves as a family so they found it very hard at first to accept the help. “They thought they could do it without the help but then they realised that they really did need it because Harry needed them to be with him.

Ocean View’s Harry Bowes is receiving treatment for leukaemia.
“We’ve had a lot of people donate funds to the appeal… just to help out, which has been great.” The group’s next fundraising event is the Help For Haz Family Fun Day at Dayboro Rugby League Club, Harry’s former sports team, on 18 October. Money raised from the event will assist the Bowes financially during Harry’s two-year treatment process. The event will also publicise the importance of blood donations. “We want to make people aware of how important donating blood is; Harry has to have (blood) transfusions all the time,” Ms Sykes said. The Help For Haz Family Fun Day will feature live music and entertainment, face painting, games, kids’ activities, craft workshops, food vendors, a bar and raffles. Early bird tickets cost $10 per family and can be ordered via the Help For Haz facebook page, Dayboro pool or at Craig Doyle Real Estate offices in Dayboro and Samford.

POLICE BEAT Break and enters, Pine Rivers: Thieves broke into houses at Sandringham Court and Dean Street at Bray Park on 24 September by removing roof tiles. A break and enter occurred at a property on Bradley Street, Dayboro over a three-day period. Thieves removed a generator after entering a shed, while motorcycle helmets were stolen from a business at Kenworth Place, Brendale after thieves smashed a window. Other break-ins occurred at homes in locations such as Gympie Road at Strathpine and Russet Burbank Parade, Homeland Crescent and Catani Crescent, all at Warner. Items such as wallets, TVs and an iPad were stolen after thieves gained entry by methods such as cutting a hole in fly screens and via windows and unlocked doors. Unlawful use of motor vehicle, Pine Rivers: A horse trailer that had been converted into an office was stolen from a business on Leitchs Road at Brendale on 25 September. Amongst other vehicles stolen from local sites over the past three weeks was a blue Kawasaki ZX14 motorcycle taken from Kurrajong Drive at Warner and a 2011 white Toyota Hilux stolen from a business on South Pine Road at Brendale on 16 September.
draw or cupboard. You can even put your car keys beside your bed at night. Some car keys are fitted with a panic button. Securing your car keys beside your bed at night gives you an instant personal alarm if you wake to the noises of an intruder. By pressing this alarm your car horn will continue to sound until you either turn it off or the car battery dies. This method is likely to scare off potential offenders and alert neighbours. This idea is also an alternative to leaving your car keys on the kitchen bench, the first place a car thief looks. First female police motorcyclists hit the road: Commissioner Ian Stewart and Police Minister Jo-Ann Miller have congratulated the first female police officers to pass the Queensland Police Service’s motorcycle training course. Senior Constable Rozanna Henriksen and Senior Constable Linda Tajnai completed the three-week course last week.

Bob calls time on council role Moreton Bay Region councillor Bob Millar, pictured at the Samford Parklands precinct that he helped bring to fruition, is to retire after 16 years in local government.
B
ob Millar believes the Samford Parklands and Moreton Bay Regional Council’s strong financial position are two “key legacies” he will leave when he retires from local politics early next year. First elected to the Pine Rivers Shire Council in 2000, for the past seven years Cr Millar has served Moreton Bay Regional Council residents in a 600km2 area stretching from Ocean View to Camp Mountain. “I am honoured to have served my community for the last decade and a half and to have played a part in the balanced development of one of Australia’s fastest growing urban regions,” Cr Millar said. His father Clarrie Millar was the Federal Member for Wide Bay in the 1970s and 1980s but that didn’t inspire his son to enter politics. “(My motivation) was lobbying from a number of community members who thought that I could make a greater contribution through elected representation, at some level, more than I was able to do through the extensive community service roles that I was undertaking at the time,” Cr Millar said. Cr Millar said helping to transform a former CSIRO research site into the Samford Parklands sports facility was a career highlight. As Council’s Corporate Services chairperson, the retiring councilman has contributed to “leaving the council in a very strong financial position”, with ratepayers and residents “receiving very good value for money”. Moreton Bay Mayor Allan Sutherland said Cr Millar had “served his community with distinction and conviction”. “Bob Millar’s achievements are numerous, but it’s his loyalty to the region and council for which he will be remembered most,” Cr Sutherland said. In retirement, Cr Millar is looking forward to spending more time with his grandchildren and parents and “coming home at night to share the company of my wife (Dot), unlike has been the case for the last many years” during four terms of local government service. Cr Millar is yet to endorse a candidate to replace him as Division 11 councillor. “I have a lot of heart in Division 11 and in the region as a whole... and I would find it absolutely derelict in my duty were I not to endeavour to see appropriate people replace me,” he said.

‘
Dress to impress and raise money for charity in the process’ could be the catchphrase for a gala fundraising event being held at Samford this month. Money raised from the Samford Lions Charity Masked Ball on 17 October will assist sufferers of everything from asthma to cancer. The Puttin’ on the Ritz event, a masquerade ball with jazz music to be held at lavish Samford venue Topiaries at Beaumont, is a fundraiser by Catherine Mason, an entrant in the Lions Medical Research Foundation Personality Quest. She is one of 10 entrants from southeast Queensland supporting the Lions Medical Research Foundation, which for 52 years has funded research into conditions such as diabetes, schizophrenia, cancer and Parkinson’s Disease. Representing her Samford community in the personality quest, Ms Mason knows ďŹ rst hand the beneďŹ ts of medical research, having battled cervical cancer. “I still struggle with my health, and I want to help others who are going through similar experiences,â€? she said. “The effort and difďŹ culty for me in pulling off something like this (fundraising ball) is nothing

compared to daily pain of a cancer patient, so I am happy to do it.â€? Samford Lions President John Burnham hopes a ďŹ ve-ďŹ gure sum will be raised from the charity ball. “There will be a maximum of about 150 people in attendance‌ who will be dressed up to the nines,â€? he said. “If we sell all the tickets we are hoping to raise $10,000.â€? Ms Mason said the event is also a celebration of the community groups, businesses and people of Samford that have “lifted me up so that I can feel like I am doing something worthwhile with my life, instead of just being sickâ€?. “They and my family have saved me this year just as much as the medical staff who have cured my cancer,â€? she said. “I will never be able to thank them enough.â€? As well as live jazz music, the Puttin’ on the Ritz masked ball will feature a supper, auction, photo booths and rafes. Tickets to the 18 years-plus event cost $99 and includes food, drink, live music and entertainment. IS YOUR POOL COMPLYING? As of 30th November 2015, all pool owners must be in conformance with the new Legislation referred to as QDC MP3.4 and as such, any pool deemed non-compliant is in danger of hefty fines to owners. Parental care and awareness is the first necessity, but the changes to the old Legislation are significant enough to be of concern. At a recent seminar held by the Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC), for Pool Safety Inspectors and Local Government Inspectors, there was great emphasis placed on the November 2015 “cut off”. As such, it should be a warning to responsible pool owners to get a Licenced Pool Inspector to visit, and seek a full compliance check. Self-assessment might not show up any defects. Only a professional inspector can give the assurance that all is in compliance. When the inspector visits, the pool’s registration form shall be amended to indicate conformance or, in turn, defects will be defined and a form of non-compliance issued, which the owner has 90 days (or to 30th November) to rectify. A Pool Inspector whom is also QBCC licenced to do repairs, is a very good combination.

Kay joins fun at Samford Scout camp
I
t wasn’t just kids with disabilities who were special guests at an annual Scout camp at Samford Valley last week. The Agoonoree camp at Baden-Powell Park saw around 70 young people enjoy the great outdoors as special guests of Scouts Queensland. Agoonoree allows children with varying degrees of disability, or those from disadvantaged backgrounds, to partake in a week-long camp with carers from Scouts Queensland and Girl Guides Queensland. Activities included fire building, damper cooking, abseiling and flour bombing using a catapult. Being away from home, sleeping in a tent and using their own money to shop at the canteen are just some of the joys the young people experienced, often for the first time.
Channel Seven newsreader Kay McGrath taste tests some damper with campers Angelica Wright and Adam Dalgairns at the Agoonoree event at Samford Valley.
Over 300 volunteers supported the young campers. Media personality Kay McGrath from Channel Seven News visited the camp to meet the young guests and the dedicated Scout Leaders and carers, some of whom have been volunteering since the early years of the Agoonoree camp back in the early 1980s. The popular newsreader was inspiring on the crate stacking activity and enjoyed freshly cooked damper from the fire. A special fireworks display formed part of the celebrations marking the camp’s 35th year of operation in Queensland.

tars of Better Homes and Gardens, The Block and Gardening Australia will be some of the drawcards when a huge garden extravaganza comes to Strathpine. Hot on the heels of the Samford Valley Garden and Lifestyle Expo in September comes the Brisbane International Garden Show at Pine Rivers Park in Strathpine. Between 8 and 11 October, high-profile gardening and landscaping personalities including Gardening Australia’s Jerry Coleby-Williams, Graham Ross of TV’s Better Homes and Gardens and the Garden Clinic radio show, award-winning landscaper Jim Fogarty, ‘Garden Guru’ Phil Dudman, landscape gardener and The Block contestant Dale Vine and horticulturalists Noel Burdette and Claire Bickle will give tips to keen green thumbs. Showcasing around 200 exhibitors including 40 nurseries, the Brisbane International Garden Show is expected to attract more than 30,000 people. “The event is set to incorporate more than 100 presentations across four stages, covering topics ranging from how to kick-start a thriving veggie patch and grow citrus, right through to creating an inviting backyard in a small space, and using organic methods to manage garden
pests,” event manager Marion Beazley said. For tickets and more information on the expo, which is open from 9am daily, visit www.brisbanegardenshow.com.au

Pool safety: the target is zero Zero child drownings in pools is achievable. The number of child drownings in pools since the introduction of Queensland’s new Swimming Pool Laws has decreased. In December 2009 the Queensland Government introduced a new Pool Safety Standard. This document, referred to as MP3.4, replaced 11 different standards. All pools must comply with this new standard by 30 November unless selling or leasing your property prior to that date, in which case a Pool Safety Certificate is required to be issued by a licensed Pool Safety Inspector. Steve Davis from Pool Safety Inspections Northside, pictured, believes pool safety is the responsibility of all pool owners. “The three most important factors are: parental supervision of children near a pool; teaching your children to swim; and closing the gate and maintaining your pool fence,” he said.
“For example, if your gate can be left resting on the latch – it is unsafe. If the palings or panels are loose or broken – it is unsafe. “If there are climbable objects within 900mm of the pool fence – it is unsafe.” Mr Davis has been a licenced Pool Safety Inspector since 2009. “Since the certification process began in December 2009 very few pools were found to be compliant,” he said. “Many of these however required only minor repairs, maintenance or modification work to bring them up to standard. “Others required more extensive work, but quite a few existing barriers can be modified to meet the current standards, rather than be replaced.” Some Pool Safety Inspectors are permitted to carry out minor repairs, maintenance and modification works, which could save you time and money on reinspection fees. Mr Davis has an unrestricted licence, which allows him to carry
out minor repairs, maintenance and modification works, and also offers a consultancy service specialising in pool safety modifications and solutions. Phone Pool Safety Inspections Northside on 0411 601 199. To access a copy of the current pool safety standards visit www. hpw.qld.gov.au/poolsafety and click on ‘1. Pool Safety Standard’. There are many useful diagrams in this document that will assist in determining whether your pool barrier is compliant or not.

Landscaping your backyard – Tips to make it a fun place Do you have a sufficiently large backyard that is not being utilised properly? You could put some effort and money into landscaping it so that this place becomes the part of the house where the entire family can have fun. There are landscape designers whose services you could use or you could do it entirely on your own if you are a DIY type of person. Make sure that you discuss details at great length with the designer because this place should have all that you are looking for. A garden is one of the most important components of your landscaping efforts. Plants and lawn grass make the place a pleasure to be in because they soften the look. You can use plants to convey a certain theme. For instance, flowering plants and creepers can make the place look very serene and romantic. Trees and large shrubs can also provide you with an element of privacy. If climate permits it, you could use a
lot of fragrant creepers and shrubs to make your backyard a heavenly place to be in. Simple things like a terracotta tub of jasmine or fragrant herbs can transform the look and feel of a place. Your backyard also needs to have the right hardware in order to be a great place to spend time. The seating arrangements you use are very important and are determined according to how you want to use the place. People who like to dine outdoors a lot should certainly have tables and chairs installed in the backyard, as well as a barbecue. If you have the space and the budget, you could also have a bar counter with a mini refrigerator installed. The furniture you use should be able to withstand the elements. You can make use of a variety of cushions to make your chairs and garden benches comfortable to sit on. Lots of people use beach furniture in their backyards especially if it receives a lot
of sun. A hammock is another interesting option and you could lie down on either, or even on the grass, while relaxing with a book. The lighting in your backyard is also important and enables you to use it after dark. You could opt for stone lanterns or ones made of wrought iron depending on the look you want to create. You could also have lanterns hanging from trees or trellises that you could use on special occasions in order to create a lovely ambience. If you have kids then you should consider their needs when you are landscaping your backyard. You could have a splash pool for them, or even a plastic swing or slide set. Make sure that the place is completely safe for them to play in at all times. Your family will love spending time in your backyard if you landscape it properly. It will definitely take some money to make it happen but the results will be worth your while.

With several of her tracks on high rotation on Triple J radio, Ayla will perform at Red Deer Festival at Mt Samson this Saturday.

fter a one-year hiatus, Red Deer Music and Arts Festival is back on Saturday with an impressive lineup of national, emerging and local talent. This weekend’s annual overnight BYO and camping festival jaunt at Mt Samson will be headlined by Sydney punk band Frenzal Rhomb, while also featuring names such as Andy Bull, Mosman Alder, Waax, Cheap Fakes and Hey Geronimo. Also performing will be Sunshine Coast rising star Ayla Scanlan, who took time out of a day at the beach to talk to The Westerner. Ayla’s breakout hit Wish I Was shot the then-18-year-old to fame within the Australian music scene, becoming the 15th most played track on Triple J radio in 2014. Her second track, Waiting, was released in May and is still on rotation. “It was a wonderful surprise. The first time they told me it was going to get played on Triple J was amazing and then they kept playing it and it was unreal,” Ayla said. “Every time I heard it, it was the same level of excitement.” Now a year older, she has achieved
REELTIME
international attention through the Italian label Ego, which also signed artists The Jezabels and Emma Louise, which earned Ayla a place in the top 10 on the Italian iTunes charts. Her latest release, When the World Ends, is creating further anticipation amongst fans ahead of the release of a debut EP on 6 November. Ayla said she is looking forward to playing at Red Deer Fest and is particularly excited to see Andy Bull perform. “I think it’ll be a really cool festival. It’s BYO, it’s in a field somewhere,” she
said. “Those kind of festivals usually have a good vibe.” Despite being 19, Ayla’s songwriting demonstrates maturity beyond her years, which she does not quite know the source of but theorises it has something to do with having a lot of older friends. Her extraordinary voice backs up her songwriting capabilities, having been compared to the likes of Florence Welch, Lorde, Lana Del Rey and Lykke Li. “I do listen to Florence, Lana Del Rey and Sia and Sarah Blasko and Norah Jones and Katie Noonan,” Ayla said, when asked if these names represented her influences. Ayla is keen to do more co-writing and collaborations in the future to widen her creative influences while she works on her new album. All going to plan, she will cowrite a song with Noonan in December. Red Deer Festival is on 3 October. Tickets start at $79 from www.reddeer fest.com.au – Damian Staveley
Acting up for Roman spoof
A
Strathpine drama group will soon present a throwback to the classic British comedies of the late-1960s. Act 1 Theatre’s new production is the Queensland premiere of Up Pompeii. Director John Sayles has wanted to a helm a production of Up Pompeii, based on the popular 1960s BBC television series and 1971 film, for several years. “Unlike other popular productions like Dad’s Army, Fawlty Towers and Are You Being Served?, this one does not use original scripts, but is based on characters created by Talbert Rothwell and Sid Colin,” Sayles explains. “There is, however a direct link with the hit TV series, because it was Frankie Howerd who asked Miles Tredinnick to write a stage version of the TV show. “Sadly Frankie died before the show came to the stage and it took 23 years before it finally reached a theatre.” Now Act 1 Theatre will give Up Pompeii its Queensland theatre premiere. The play is a hilarious romp through Ancient Rome that follows Lurcio, head slave to Senator Ludicrus Sextus. Throw in a nymphomaniac, a lovestruck
Jake Hollingsworth as Nausius and Trevor Howden as Kretinus in Act 1 Theatre’s production of Up Pompeii.
senator’s son and a soothsayer predicting doom whilst Mt. Vesuvius rumbles, and you have the ingredients for an “orgy of laughs”. Amongst the actors in the Up Pompeii cast are Warner’s Lionel Payne and Allara Payne, Albany Creek’s Clare Kenny-Hughes and Mason Hine, and Eatons Hill’s Julia Baker, also known as TV’s Snake Boss. Also appearing are Tim Stefanini, Talia Dyball, Jake Hollingsworth, Niki Geary, Angela Witcher and Act 1 Theatre stalwarts Terry Frawley and Trevor Howden. For tickets and show times for Up Pompeii, on for seven shows at Act 1 Theatre at Hall Street, Strathpine from 23 October to 7 November, phone 0458 579 269 or visit www.act1theatreinc.com
Macbeth A “prophetic greeting” from some mysterious witches leads to the rise and fall of a Scottish Duke. So goes the story of one of William Shakespeare’s most famous works, Macbeth. Great soldier Macbeth (Michael Fassbender) receives a prophecy from three witches that he will become King of Scotland. Driven by allconsuming ambition and at the insistence of his wife, Lady Macbeth (Marion Cotillard), he murders his king (David Thewlis) and assumes the throne. The repercussions of his deceitful and murderous actions weigh heavily on Macbeth’s shoulders, manifesting in mental deterioration and a descent into madness, as he wrestles with inner demons and the “snakes and scorpions in my head”. The last cinematic adaptation of Macbeth was a 2006 Australian production directed by Geoffrey ‘Romper Stomper’ Wright, which set the story as a violent gang war in the Melbourne underworld. This new version also has a strong Aussie flavour with Justin Kurzel, maker of the excellent yet disturbing Snowtown, in the director’s chair. Macbeth has four major stars. The first two are Academy Award nominee Fassbender (12 Years a Slave) and Oscar winner Cotillard (La Vie en Rose), who expectedly and deservedly command attention when they are on screen. Each star’s extended monologues are prime examples of acting at its best, but equal plaudits should go to two of director Kurzel’s Snowtown collaborators. Visually, Macbeth is an absolute treat, thanks to Emmy-award winning cinematographer and fellow Aussie Adam Arkapaw, best known for his work on the television series Top of the Lake and True Detective. The music is by award-winning Australian composer Jed Kurzel, whose film scores over the past year include Slow West, The Babadook and Son of a Gun. With Eerie sounding violins prominent amongst minimal orchestration, his score is a perfect match for the bleak visuals. Thewlis, Sean Harris and Paddy Considine are the pick of an extensive supporting cast. There’s no modern spin on the source material to better engage modern movie audiences with Macbeth. This is a very faithful retelling of the Shakespeare yarn. It’s necessarily violent; slow-motion battle sequences are bloody yet not hyper-real, like the violence of 300. Shakespeare purists should relish this film, but general audiences may struggle with the story, dialogue and dialects, so knowledge of the story of Macbeth prior to entering the cinema, and undivided concentration whilst inside the theatre, is advantageous. 8/10

amford football product Kenneth Dougall is set to represent his country for the first time after being selected in the Australian Under-23 team. Dougall, who plays for Sparta Rotterdam in the Netherlands, is in a 23-player squad for two international friendly matches against Korea in Hwaseong and Incheon on 9 and 12 October. “My selection in the Olyroos has come as a bit of a surprise, not

because of my ability but the fact that they normally cycle through the same pool of players,” he said. “This is my first time travelling away with a squad so that brings excitement and the challenges that come with that. “This being my first time in the international set up I’m unsure what to expect from Korea, but I can assume it’ll be two very tough games against very good opponents.”
Name: Andrew Davenport Club: Pine Rivers Inline Hockey Club Team: Dragons Under 11 Position: Goalkeeper What age did you start playing inline hockey and why did you choose this sport? I started playing when I was seven. I went skating at Albany Creek Skateaway and at the end of the session they brought out hockey sticks, nets and pucks and asked if anyone wanted to try it. I tried it and I liked it so I got into it. What is your biggest achievement in inline hockey to date? Getting to play for Queensland and going to Nationals. Last year it was in Victoria and this year it’s in Queensland. What is your training programme? I play in-house competition on Monday nights and my club training on Thursday night. I play games on Sunday mornings. With Nationals, I have also been training on Saturday afternoons. What is your favourite hockey skill? I love catching high, fast pucks in my glove. What is your pre-game routine? I have to do stretches and practice drops and out on the rink my team gets to shoot at me with the pucks so I get the feel of it. What are the best things about inline hockey? The pace of the sport. It’s fast! Attributes needed to be a good inline hockey player. Skating skills, good handeye coordination and predicting where the puck will go. As a goalie you need leg muscles and fast reaction times. The best things about my club. I love our coach, she’s really good. The team is also good. Who is your sporting idol? Jonathan Quick is a great goalie in the NHL (American ice hockey). What are your goals for sport? Well I don’t score goals, I save goals! I would love to play for Canada. What advice would you give to people looking to play inline hockey? Do the learn to skate program if you can’t already skate and do the club’s Mighty Puck Development program. Have fun! What are your three favourite sporting teams? Detroit Red Wings (ice hockey), Real Madrid (soccer), Pine Rivers Dragons (my team).

“An Evening on the Field” Jen Barker, Nat Roberts, Fiona Salmon, Aylce Rogers and Kate Murdoch have been preparing for the Pine Rivers Swans’ debut season in the women’s AFL competition.
Swans kicking new goals
A
ustralian Rules football for women is coming to Strathpine, as part of a “changing culture” at a local club. Pine Rivers Swans will field a women’s AFL team, the first senior women’s side in the district, in the Queensland Women’s Australian Football Association (QWAFA) competition in 2016. Swans President Dylan Barker said the 2016 season would see a continuation of the “complete restructure of the club” which he hopes will “set the club up for long-term stability and success”. Part of the club’s restructure includes growing on-field participation of women in the sport at Rob Akers Reserve. “Gone are the days of the club being a male-only affair,” Mr Barker said. “In changing the culture and direction of the club, we are seeing more women involved on senior game day, in both managerial roles and volunteering.” New Pine Rivers player Aylce Rogers said the club’s inaugural women’s team is giving more members of the local community “an opportunity to get involved of Aussie Rules”. The next closest AFL clubs with women’s teams are at Caboolture and Zillmere. “It’s something really new and exciting… and there’s going to be challenges along the way but definitely there’s a great group of girls that are going to be on that journey,” Rogers said. “It will be great to start that history at the club and have that first female team representing the Swans. “When you’re in a team and you’ve got people supporting you, be that your friends, your family, the community around the club and also that greater community of the suburbs around you, it makes it a lot more meaningful and gives it a lot more purpose.” The Swans have recruited around two-thirds of the women’s team’s playing roster for the 2016 season, but still seeks more women for its “mixed group” of players. “There’s a whole heap of girls new (to the sport) but also girls who have played recently or at earlier points of their lives,” Rogers said. “A lot of girls have been supporting their husbands or partners playing throughout the last couple of seasons.” Pre-season training for the inaugural Pine Rivers women’s team will start in November. The 18-year-old, pictured, presented the Mark of the Year award at the AFL’s night of nights held at the Crown Palladium. Harris was invited to present the award after taking a much talked about high-flying mark during the Women’s AFL match between Melbourne Demons and Western Bulldogs.
