Pine no longer in the cold In the past I have been critical of Moreton Bay Regional Council for not hosting enough entertainment events in our area. Australia Day events at Pine Rivers Park, Strathpine have been cancelled, so too has the traditional Pine Rivers Festival. Meanwhile, Caboolture has its annual Urban Country Music Festival, Redcliffe the Sails Festival, while Council acquired the Woodford Folk Festival site. However, council-run festivals have been lacking in the Pine Rivers district for a few years. That was until late last year when Council unveiled its Decades Festival, with a concert featuring The Seekers and John Farnham. This year they are trying to attract a younger crowd, with Cold Chisel, The Living End and Something For Kate to perform at Strathpine in October. To show that locals appreciate big events in their neighbourhood, residents need to support this event en masse. Hopefully this will encourage Council to also run youth music festivals, similar to the Rapid Festivals which were held at Strathpine and Lawnton last decade. Decades Festival is a good start towards entertainment equity amongst the three districts of Moreton Bay.

Arna PAGE 3 GIRL Arna is an orphan. Her mother is a wild red deer from the bush. When Arna was approximately one week old her mother took her down to a dam at Peachester for a drink. It was drought conditions and very little water in the dam but lots of deep mud. Arna was not strong enough to get out of the mud. Later in the evening a farmer checking his cattle found her very dehydrated and he brought her to Lyell Deer Sanctuary at Mt Samson where she now plays happily as the “boss” of the paddock. She will grow into a very big deer and live her life at the sanctuary. Arna is very friendly but only likes cuddles from her adopted ‘mum’, Maureen. When she wants a deer of another smaller species to move out of her way she will strike out with her right hoof. This is why the deer are kept behind a fence. Arna is 16 months old now, happy and enjoys T.L.C. and being fed by visitors. Arna is named after a young aboriginal girl who was visiting Lyell Deer Sanctuary when she arrived.
Who is your special girl?

Sue, along with the likes of Kelti Barber from Dayboro and Warner’s Michelle Clarke, are taking part in Stadium Stomp, running up and down more than 5000 steps at the Gabba sports ground, to help raise money for charity.
What inspired me to take part in Stadium Stomp… I am a Fitness Trainer with enarji Health Coaching, specialising in mothers’ health and wellbeing and thought it would be great to give my mums the opportunity of doing something a little different. The biggest challenge of the event… Finding time to train for the hundreds of stairs we will be running. Fitness is important to me… because of the overall health and wellbeing for life. I want to grow young, not old. My training regime for the event… Tabata, strength training, running stairs. I haven’t had time to find someone to train with! My favourite sporting memory at the Gabba… I have never been; first time and very close up! Apart from running and other fitness activities I enjoy… time with my family, outdoor activities and a thrilling movie. If I could form a social sporting team with any four athletes… (Ultra marathon runners) Turia Pitt and Cliff Young, (Olympic swimmer) Ian Thorpe and (Olympic sprinter) Usain Bolt. Something most people don’t know about me… I used to smoke. When I was young the job I wanted to do when I grew up… Fashion designer. If I could make the world a better place… Treat everybody as a human being regardless of where they come from or their beliefs. We are all human. If a movie was made about my life I would be played by… Melissa McCarthy.
Stadium Stomp is on 21 June. Entry is $20 and open to people of all levels of fitness 12 years of age and older. Register for the event online at www.stadiumstomp.com.au/Gabba
ast year it was Farnsey – this year it’s Barnesy. Australian rock ‘n’ roll royalty will christen the revamped Pine Rivers Park Ampitheatre in October, with Jimmy Barnes and his band Cold Chisel to perform at the second Decades Festival. It follows John Farnham and The Seekers sharing the stage for the first time at last year’s inaugural Decades Festival concert, which attracted around 5500 patrons. Moreton Bay Regional Council will give the amphitheatre a $444,000 upgrade ahead of the performance of Cold Chisel, The Living End and Something For Kate at the Strathpine venue. In a bid to help attract larger events, the amphitheatre’s existing roof will be extended. The upgraded roof will feature a 12 tonne loading capacity truss and permanent infrastructure to allow venue hirers to attach lighting, projectors, sound and other stage equipment. Moreton Bay Region Deputy Mayor Mike Charlton said the upgraded venue, which hosts events such as Christmas in the Park, would “help attract even more events for residents and visitors”. “Last year, thousands of people filled

Stalwarts geared up for Dayboro Rodeo

DAYBORO RODEO
Sunday 14th June Dale Tokely and Selwyn Barr are longtime Dayboro Rodeo workers.
T
he Dayboro Rodeo is back – and these two blokes will be there once again. Petrie’s Dale Tokely and Dayboro’s Selwyn Barr have both been involved with the rodeo for around 40 years. Mr Tokely attended his first Dayboro Rodeo at the age of nine and is now the event’s ringmaster and ground announcer. He said over the past four decades the event has grown in size and experienced improvements in safety. “Riders don’t take as many chances as what we used to in the old days. A lot of safety gear is used now, said Mr Tokely, who added the event is ingrained into the identity of Dayboro. “We’re the largest event that gathers funds for all the local charities and clubs. We’re pretty proud of that, he said. “It’s a really good family-oriented day. That’s what we went for. After the rodeo was postponed due to the flooding rains experienced in May, the beloved event will return on 14 June. Mr Barr, who has been involved with the rodeo since it began in the 1970s, is tipping a big turnout. He said crowds were typically larger after the rodeo had been postponed due to wet weather. His partner, Lee Tapper, has spent the better part of the last 10 years working at the rodeo, serving drinks to appreciative patrons.
www.thewesterner.com.au
She said people come “from all over the place to the rodeo, noting, “we get regulars who come back every year without fail. Ms Tapper said the event has always given back to the community. “I think the most important thing is, after all expenses are paid, all funds raised go back into our local community, she said. “It goes to all the little community groups who assisted on the day. Dayboro Rodeo Association President Jacqui French said the rodeo usually sees about 4000 people descend on Dayboro. She said the event is a day of “full impact entertainment but is still great for families, with professional bullfighters – or rodeo clowns, as they are sometimes known – protecting participants. “A bull is a wild animal so it will chase a few people and we don’t want anybody ever to get hurt, she said. “The bullfighters do an amazing job and they will take on a bull so people don’t get hurt. The Dayboro Rodeo will be held at the Dayboro Showgrounds, Mt Mee Road, Dayboro on 14 June from 10am. Admission ranges from $5 to $15, with free parking available. For more information phone 0400 099 119, visit www.dayboro rodeo.org or search for Dayboro Rodeo on Facebook.

POLICE BEAT Traffic crash, Murrumba Downs: Police are seeking witnesses to a traffic crash that occurred at Murrumba Downs on 5 June. Initial information indicates that around 7am a Black Nissan Almera sedan was headed north on the Bruce Highway just past the Pine Rivers Bridge. The driver lost control of the vehicle and veered across the median strip and into the path of two oncoming cars.
Stolen mobile phones located, Pine Rivers: Pine Rivers Police have had success when investigating stolen mobile phones. This has been achieved by using phone/tablet ‘find my phone’ apps. Almost all android phones can now be remotely located, without an app required to do so. Pine Rivers Crime Prevention encourages owners to install ‘find my phone’ apps to phones and tablets. Keeping a record of serial numbers and taking photos of valuables also helps police return property quicker and easier if it is stolen. Murder charge, Caboolture: Police have charged a woman with murder after the death of a man in Caboolture on 7 June. At around 1.15am a 26-year-old man walked into a Lower King Street service station with an apparent stab wound. He was transported to Caboolture Hospital but died a short time later. A 22-yearold Caboolture woman appeared in the Caboolture Magistrates Court on 8 June. Investigations are continuing.
Security warning after business hacked: Police are issuing a strong warning to businesses following a serious hacking attack on an international company based in Brisbane in recent months. The company’s computer system was hacked and data pertaining to sensitive operations involving the business was stolen. The hackers demanded a ransom be paid in Bitcoin, equating to thousands of dollars. The company complied. Following this a further extortion demand for a larger amount was made of the business. The business refused and contacted police.
Fatal traffic crash, Keperra: A 17-yearold Ashgrove man died following a single vehicle traffic crash in Keperra on 6 June. Around 12.40am a vehicle that was travelling on Settlement Road left the road a struck a tree. Earlier, police attempted to intercept the vehicle on Samford Road but pulled over to the side of the road when the vehicle failed to stop. The driver was pronounced deceased at the scene.

nyone who manages a horse on a property knows that it is a labour of love – and not a cheap one. Horse owners often say that their highest costs are feed bills, and with so many feed, supplement and hay choices it can be tricky to know what your horse needs. The best place to start is to ensure you have healthy grasses, a nutritious and relatively cheap feed source for horses. SEQ Catchments will run courses in Samford designed to help locals keep pastures and horses healthy, even in winter, and save them money in the long term. Running over two to three months, the easy-to-follow courses take landowners through the steps of everything they need to know about managing their property. Program co-ordinator Greg Leach has been helping landholders make the best decisions for their land for over 20 years. “Paddocks can quickly degrade and you end up spending a lot of money on feed and supplements, Mr Leach said. “As soon as your pastures become run down, you lose essential minerals, which
means you have to fork out even more on supplements. “Grazing your horses on degraded pasture can also lead to colic, greasy heel, parasites and poisoning from weeds. One of the best ways to care for your horse is to care for your land so it can provide healthy pastures all year round. “With it looking likely that an El Nino will bring drier, warmer conditions, planning ahead will become more critical than ever, Mr Leach said. “But by following a few simple tips, you will start to see healthier pastures for longer throughout the year and reduced feed costs. The ‘My Land, My Home’ courses in Samford commence 12 June and start at $308 per course. For bookings visit www.myland myhome.com.au

paceman Dacey, Australian Wolf, Ultra Lion, Hugh Manatee and Rip Rielly. It’s not a roll-call of superheroes but a list of some of the athletes who are part of the professional wrestling revival happening Down Under. They are amongst the Aussie wrestlers who will take to the ring to grapple with athletes from China and New Zealand at the Homecoming II event at Pine Rivers PCYC on 27 June, the Australian Wrestling Alliance’s biggest show of the year. The international flavour harks back to the days when Australia was an epicentre of professional wrestling, with World Championship Wrestling Australia bouts beamed into households on television. “In the 1960s and 70s there was no place bigger in the world for wrestling than Australia, the Australian Wrestling Alliance’s owner and promoter Jesse Moon explains. “If you were a professional wrestler anywhere in the world you had to come to Australia to get your name out there. “It (wrestling) fizzled out but in the last few years it’s really come back with a punch. “We’ve got wrestlers all around the world, in England, Japan, Mexico and Canada and we’ve got four (Australian) wrestlers signed to the WWE in America at the moment. Continued on page 22

Brendale Produce Cashmere’s Rita Larsen and the Birders of the South Pine River group have released a book about bird species which can be sighted in the area.
Eighty-nine birds are profiled in Birds of the South Pine River, a 70-page colour book that includes photographs and information including the best months of the year to spot each animal. “A lot of the birds are here all the time and some of the birds are migratory so we only ever see them seasonally, Birders of the South Pine River co-ordinator Rita Larsen said. “Some birds are terrific to see because they are so rare. Samford is known as the home of the powerful owl and just down on the river, 20 metres from the step, we saw a powerful owl. “And yes, we did rub our eyes and ask, ‘Are we really seeing this?’, because it’s such a big, powerful bird. It was amazing to see. “We really like to see the unusual, rare types of birds but we also love to see
species more than double to 137. “We had heard anecdotal evidence that the birds were coming back‌ so we thought if we did a survey every month we could see,â€? Mrs Larsen recalls. Mrs Larsen said birders “are like a clanâ€? and membership of her group has tripled since it was established four years ago. Birders hope to share their passion via Birds of the South Pine River, which will be distributed to local libraries, schools and environment centres. “It’s not a high energy level or physical activity but it keeps the brain going and gets your legs going,â€? Mrs Larsen said. “It’s a social (pastime) because you can chat to anybody in any location in Australia about birds, and it’s terrifically rewarding.â€? Peter and Karen McCurley, Andrew Slack, Darren Lockyer and Lee Kenny will again tee up for the Samford Valley Rotary Club Charity Golf Day.
Tee up good cause at golf course
H
ave you got the balls and the game to raise money for Cancer Council Queensland? Whether you’re a top swinger like Adam Scott, Rory McIlroy or Karrie Webb or a Happy Gilmore hacker, join some of Queensland’s top former footy stars on the golf course – in support of a great cause. The annual Samford Valley Rotary Club Charity Golf Day is held in memory of Samantha McCurley, who lost her battle with a brain tumour at the age of 16. Funds raised will support Team Sam, a Relay For Life team founded by Samantha’s parents, Peter and Karen, to raise money for Cancer Council Queensland. Samford Rotary Fundraising Co-ordinator Lee Kenny hopes more than $10,000 will be raised to assist Team Sam with its charity fundraising efforts. “At Rotary we are passionate about raising funds locally, so that we can help people in our very own community,” he said. “Our family knew Samantha and I lost my brother to the same form of cancer last
year, so this is a cause close to the heart.” Sign up for the charity golf day and you could be teeing off for a round at Keperra Country Club with State of Origin greats such as Darren Lockyer, Wally FullertonSmith, Colin Scott and Adam Mogg. Former Australian Wallabies rugby union international player Andrew Slack and former Australian rugby league representative Graham Eadie have also signed on to support the event. “It will be a great golfing event, supported by a number of great Australian sporting heroes,” Mr Kenny said. Tickets to the charity golf day on 19 June are $120 per person, which includes breakfast, green fees, golf cart hire and a catered lunch. All tickets must be pre-purchased by contacting Lee Kenny on 0417 196 427. Cancer Council Queensland’s annual Moreton Bay Relay For Life will be held at Pine Rivers Showgrounds at Lawnton on 31 October. To register visit www.relayfor life.org.au or phone 1300 65 65 85.

Book offers helping hand to carers
Mt Samson’s Joan Wilson-Jones has written a self-help guide for carers of terminally ill loved ones.
W
hen Joan Wilson-Jones’ partner Philip discovered he had an aggressive cancer she predicted they had a tough road ahead – and she was right. “His prognosis was very poor and he expressed a strong wish to remain at home throughout his treatment and, should the prognosis be correct, to die at home,” Ms Wilson-Jones recalls. “Caring for a loved one who is seriously ill is an enormous task and I was scared about the role I was taking on.” Seeking information to help prepare her for a carer’s role, her search found that “vital information for carers is sadly lacking.” “I was unsuccessful in finding anything specifically directed to the carer and certainly nothing that included useful strategies and ideas for how to provide the support and care needed, as well as being able to continue to look after yourself,” Ms Wilson-Jones said. After being diagnosed with a metastasised prostate cancer, Philip passed away

five years later, at the age of 49. “In Philip’s final months I was (his) head nurse, hospital orderly, kitchen staff and laundry staff. There was no time for goodbyes,” Ms Wilson-Jones recalls. “In the five years of his illness I had only a handful of proper night’s sleep, as I was constantly managing night medications and undertaking other medically related tasks.
“I know it doesn’t have to be this hard.” The Mt Samson resident has written a book she hopes will offer a helping hand to carers of a seriously ill loved one. Ms Wilson-Jones says Who Cares is the “self-help guide” she needed to read when she became a carer. “It includes suggestions for the carer that they can implement for themselves and, most importantly, ideas for people around the carer so that they can offer real, helpful support,” she explains. “The statistics and research consistently shows that with Australia’s aging population, and distressing cancer rates, that the number of people caring for a seriously ill loved one at home could rise dramatically over the next few decades. “If this book helps one person then I will be happy.” Joan Wilson-Jones will launch Who Cares at the Relaxation Centre, 15 South Pine Road, Alderley on 19 June at 7pm. The book is out through Balboa Press, available as both an e-book and in hard copy from bookstore.balboapress.com

important for the perfect wedding and reception
C
olour s cast a spell – and set the tone for your entire wedding day! The use of colour can and will convey meanings to you and your guests. Colour will affect the atmosphere of a room and the mood of a moment. One of the best ways to choose colours is to use a colour wheel. With a colour wheel you can see how some of your favourite colours will work together. When certain colours are placed together in a room they collectively create an undeniable look and feel. Combining dark and pale shades will produce a rich feel or you can pair any colour with white for an ethereal effect. You might also consider using shades of a single colour and vary the hue in intensity, for example from soft butter yellow to bright yellow. Using many shades of the same colour will help you to avoid a monotonous look. Would you like your wedding to have a feeling of elegance? You would want to choose colours that are assortments of the same tone. Dark purple, bright purple, and lilac would be an example of this. To create a gentle effect you may want to pick colours that lie adjacent to each other
Phoenix Sculpture Garden
on the colour wheel, such and green and blue, or try yellow, peach and orange. To produce a vibrant, energising combination, choose colours that lie opposite one another on the colour wheel. For example, on a colour wheel yellow is on the exact opposite side of purple. Contrasting colours seem to ‘pop’ and create fun, lively combinations. You may also want to choose two colours from one of the opposing colours. For example, if yellow is your main colour, you may choose light lavender and dark purple as your two complementary shades. Beautiful! For a fun, fresh, and happy combination, try some colours that are equidistant on the colour wheel. If a line were drawn from three ‘points’ of each colour, the lines would create a triangle. If you use yellow and purple in this case, then fuchsia would become your third colour. Remember to use only one colour as your main colour and the other two as accent colours only. Tetrad is the use of four colours spaced equal distance on a colour wheel. An example would be purple, yellow, red and green. If yellow is your main colour you may have tablecloths of yellow, with centrepieces of red and purple flowers, mixed with greenery. Bloody good reason to give

Laura Murry, with Samford State School Deputy Principal Lorelle Holcroft, Principal Bradley Clark and P&C President Brendan Gilmour, oversaw the running of the school for one day last week.
ittle Jessica Vacher is one of the many human faces of blood donations. The eight-year-old from Samford Valley was diagnosed with a rare, lifethreatening immune deficiency, WHIM Syndrome, three years ago. To live young Jessica requires monthly transfusions of immunoglobulin, a blood product made from plasma and containing disease-fighting antibodies. “Her immune system doesn’t function as it should so she’s more at risk of infection,” Jessica’s mum Sharon Vacher explains. “The reason why (Jessica requires blood transfusions) is she is effectively borrowing the immune system of blood donors.

“
Good morning, Ms Murry.” That was a common greeting from students at Samford State School last week when one of their own sat in the principal’s chair for a day. Laura Murry assumed the duties of regular principal Bradley Clark during Student Principal for a Day on 3 June, an event run by the Principals Australia Institute in 176 primary and secondary schools across the country. Laura’s duties included a meeting with the school’s P&C President, morning tea duty, class visits including helping Prep students, approving the school newsletter and also running a staff meeting. “Talking in front of 40 teachers, I was so nervous that I forgot what I was supposed to say,” the Year 6 student said. “The best thing for me was that I was in the office for the majority of the day and students aren’t normally permitted behind the admin desk and I was in the staff room. “I wanted to learn the leadership role of the principal and also be the voice for the students, so that the principal knows what the students want. “They want a safe school, they want a bully-free school, they want to learn by playing and learning outside and they also want some cool resources like 3D printers.” Laura said her experience had convinced her to eventually become a school principal. “It’s lots of fun doing jobs around the school, talking to the students and staff and making our school a place to learn, grow and be,” she said. Mr Clark said Student Principal for a Day enabled students to “see two sides of the story” on the school campus. “For us it’s a great way to get a student voice into our school, to hear how a student would run a school, and for a student to see the day of a life of a school through a different set of eyes,” he said.

bad infections so she ended up getting a staph infection in her spine and an infection in her bone. “It’s a lifelong condition that she’s got... and one unfortunately she’s not going to grow out of.” Speaking on the eve of World Blood Donor Day on 14 June, Mrs Vacher said her daughter is “going to need to rely on people donating blood for life”. Mrs Vacher and her husband Justin are now regular blood donors and through the Australian Red Cross Blood Service have set up a group called ‘Team Jess’. known as The Drop Bears. The performers are members of the North Pine Bush Poets, which has been regularly performing bush poetry at Old Petrie Town since 1996. Finch said the group of poets “share Australian heritage and modern life in fun filled verse”. He encouraged local residents to come to the upcoming concerts at Dayboro and Samford Village to “see how our pioneers entertained themselves”. “(You can) see and hear some of your favourite old poems mixed in with some very interesting new ones you may not be
familiar with, most of it with an emphasis on comedy,” Finch said. “Be prepared to laugh out loud as you enjoy an art form from our heritage. Don’t miss it unless you hate to laugh.” The shows are on at the Dayboro Community Hall, Bradley Street, Dayboro on 14 June from 1.30pm, and the Samford Farmers Hall, Main Street, Samford Village on 12 July. “While you mingle with the performers, enjoy an afternoon tea included in the $15 admission price,” Finch said. Garden art from the suburbs L
ocal gardens are featured in a new art exhibition. Habitat: Artworks and Stories of Pine Rivers Gardens is a collaborative project between Brisbane photographic artists Renata Buziak and Lynette Letic. The gardens of homes at Mt Glorious, Yugar, Wights Mountain, Cedar Creek, Bray Park, Clear Mountain, Ferny Hills, Lawnton, Strathpine, Everton Park and Closeburn are represented in 11 artworks. Photographic artist Renata Buziak and a new work by Lynette Letic, far right.
Through visits and conversations, the artists worked over the course of the two years to develop the exhibition and a catalogue of artworks, photographs and stories of these gardens. Letic photographed both the gardeners and their gardens and conducted interviews about “the history of the garden, what they plant, and why”, while Buziak created her artworks using a collection of plant matter from each garden.
“The way I make the artwork is I combine the plant matter with the photographic materials, and I work with paper and film,” Buziak said. “It’s all about the composition, decay and renewal, the cycle of life.” The Habitat project was documented via a dedicated internet blog in order to reflect the artists’ process and progress, from meeting with participants to preparing for the exhibition at Pine Rivers Art Gallery. “Accompanied by a catalogue and blog, the aim of this exhibition is to offer viewers an insight into the gardens the artists spent time in, the people they spoke to, and the stories that were shared,” Letic said. The exhibition is on at Pine Rivers Art Gallery, at 199 Gympie Road, Strathpine until 18 July.
Are voices inside your head telling you what to do? Are creatures in your brain controlling your actions, speech and emotions? There are, according to Inside Out, the latest and one of the greatest animated movies from Disney Pixar, makers of the wonderful Ratatouille, Up, Wall-E, The Incredibles and Toy Story films. Inside the mind of 11-year-old Riley (voiced by Kaitlyn Dias) and everyone she knows are characters who control five core emotions – Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Anger (Lewis Black), Fear (Bill Hader) and Disgust (Mindy Kaling). The normal balance is disrupted when Riley and her mother (Diane Lane) and father (Kyle MacLachlan) move from her childhood home in rural Minnesota to big city San Francisco. Struggling to fit in at a new school and missing her friends from the Midwest, the young girl’s relationship with her parents begins to splinter when an accident at Riley HQ sees her happiness guide Joy and the gloomy Sadness being accidentally sent out into the netherregion of Riley’s stored memories. If Joy and Sadness can’t navigate their way through a world where old memories fade and die, the normally cheerful Riley will turn into a girl whose personality will be dictated by Anger, Fear and Disgust. Inside Out operates on two different levels: for kids it’s an exciting adventure but for adults (and parents in particular) it’s a tender and contemplative tale about lost childhood that can bring a tear to the eye. Some of those aforementioned Pixar movies such as Up and Wall-E had key scenes that tugged at the heartstrings, and Inside Out has plenty of those moments. But like those films Inside Out is also damn funny, so you can sneakily pass off any ‘paternal pathos tears’ as being tears caused by laughing so hard. The voice work from the Inside Out cast is on song because many of the actors are virtually reprising their best-loved roles. Poehler’s sprightly, efficient, motivated and overly positive Joy is seemingly a caricature of her Parks and Recreation character Leslie Knope. Sadness acts, sounds and looks just like Smith’s timid characters from Butter and Bad Teacher, while Kaling, a fellow graduate of the American The Office TV show, presents her usual sassy self as seen in many of her films and television shows. Inside Out also presents the most imaginative and dazzling animated world devised for the big screen since the various ingenious ‘inside a video game’ settings of 2012’s Wreck-It Ralph. Inside Out is a must-see for children and their parents this upcoming school holidays. 8/10

What services does your business offer? We supply, install and upgrade digital television antenna and home entertainment systems. What areas do your clients come from? All northern suburbs of Brisbane including Samford to Mt Mee and Caboolture to Kilcoy. What was your company’s first job? Upgrading an antenna and connections. How did you make your first dollar? Pushing trolleys at a local shopping centre. It was a large centre so it was hard work. How did you get into your current line of work? By accident. Setting up TVs for show at Chandlers, I realised it was something I could do for customers. Before long, I was doing it for a bit of cash on my way home from work. Why is a business like yours so important? Modern equipment is getting simpler to connect but getting the most
out of it still requires some expertise and knowledge that you can’t get from reading the instruction manual.

What sort of clients does your business provide services to? Generally homeowners – new homes and old. Some commercial, which seems to be increasing lately. What is the most unique job your business has done? Every job is unique in a way. No two homes are the same and no two clients want the same thing. Except to say a good, clear TV picture, and easy to use. Before your current job, what were your previous occupations? Trolley pusher, sales, shelf-stacker. Also Tech College of course. What do your customers appreciate about your services? Honest, reliable, professional service, quality materials

and lasting results, 18 years and still going. What is the best part of your job? Seeing the results of my hard work and happy clientele. What advice would you give to anyone considering working in your line of work? Be prepared to learn a lot, meet many people, and work hard. If you didn’t work in your current job, what job would you like to do? I don’t really know. I’ve been doing this for 18 years, which is most of my adult life. Perhaps OH&S or product and procedures development. I have a knack for logic and finding faults! How do you spend your spare time? With the family, four-wheel driving or working on the 4WD. They both need constant attention. Phone All Install on 0414 465 122 or 1300 780 006.

Title winning water polo rookie a keeper By Lee Oliver
T
en days, two national championship gold medals. That was the medal haul for young water polo goalkeeper Octavia Bellekens during a dream trip to Sydney last month. The 17-year-old led her Queensland team to victory in the Australian under-20 national titles, by beating New South Wales 11-10 in the championship final at Sydney’s Olympic Park Aquatic Centre. A few days later her Brisbane Barracudas team claimed the women’s National Water Polo League (NWPL) crown with a 10-8 penalty shootout victory over the Sydney University Lions. The result saw the Brisbane Barracudas draw equal with the Fremantle Marlins with a league-high five NWPL premiership wins. “It kind of still hasn’t sunk in. I still haven’t got my head around it,” Bellekens said of her dual achievements. After finishing the regular season in fifth position, the Barracudas advanced to its seventh straight national league final after beating the UTS Balmain Tigers and Fremantle Marlins in sudden death playoff matches. “We were actually in a redevelopment year this year because we had a lot of our older girls leave and move on… so we had a really, really young team this year,” said Bellekens, Brisbane Barracudas’ reserve goalkeeper. “We went in (to the NWPL semi-finals) thinking we could

beat the Balmain Tigers because that was our goal, but we kept going until the final.” The Cedar Creek resident said her “first year in the hot seat” guarding the Barracudas goal was “pretty exciting”, although she describes her NWPL debut against Hunter Hurricanes in Brisbane as “pretty scary”. “It was the last quarter and we were up by a few (goals) and my coach put me in,” the Barracudas rookie recalls. “I remember I was so shaky and I was trying to count down the (shot) clock and my voice was stuttering as I was so nervous. “The ball finally came down my end and I got a good save and after that my nerves were kind of chilled.” Sitting behind Kelsey Wakefield as the Barracudas’ firstchoice goalkeeper, Bellekens has learnt a lot from the Australian representative shot-stopper.
Ultra reward for local running man
U
p until four years ago Matthew Eckford had never run in a marathon. Now he is a world championships medallist. The Camp Mountain resident was a member of the first Australian team to win a medal in the teams ultra running event at the IAU 24 Hour World Championship. Australia beat traditional ultra marathon super power Germany to claim a silver medal in Turin, Italy. “For an individual sport it gives me goosebumps to think of how well the team came together and what it feels like to be a part of a moment when the Aussie spirit is being displayed to the world,” Eckford said. Eckford finished 10th overall and was the best-placed Australian athlete after running a total of 255km. He rates placing in the top 10 in the world more highly than finishing as Australia’s number one runner in Italy. “I was the third seeded Australian entering the race, but it was just my day,” Eckford said. “I was running second in the world at 21 hours with three hours to go, before I dropped off the pace. “I now know I can compete with the best in the world and still have a lot of room to improve.” While ultra runners typically peak between the ages of www.thewesterner.com.au
40 and 45 years, Eckford was the youngest athlete in the Australian team at 35. “I ran my first marathon in 2011 with my wife, having never been a runner,” he explains. “I’d trained and competed in mixed martial arts and boxing for over 10 years prior to that but neck injuries were preventing me from being able to continue. I then pursued ultra running as an alternative sport.” A special training regime helped prepare Eckford for his maiden ultra marathon world championship event, which was won by Great Britain. “I train 13-day fortnights, twice a day for 12-week blocks leading up to an event,” he says. “After each I have three weeks recovery with no running. “My weeks range from 15-hour to 25-hour totals and 100km to 200km. I also cross train with leg weight lifting twice per week.” Eckford is now setting his sights on the 2017 ultra running world championships.
Matthew Eckford won an ultra running world championship medal at his first attempt.
“She has taught me a lot about resilience and how to get yourself back up after you let in a goal,” she said. “Her being my idol she showed to me that you can have games where you don’t perform the best, but then you can also have games where you play awesome. “I will probably play my whole, entire career at the Barracudas just because I’ve gone up through the ranks with them from the juniors. I’m definitely prepared to sit and wait behind her (Wakefield).” Adding to Bellekens’ most recent water polo achievements, back in April she won the most valuable goalkeeper award at the 18 years and under national club championships for the second straight year. Last year’s effort at the national titles saw her selected for the Australian team that competed at the FINA youth world championships in Spain.
