Holly continues to inspire If you want to read a good news story to warm the heart, then turn to page 8. There you will find an article on Holly Mason, who is about to have her first solo art exhibition. That anyone with a passion for art can create around 100 pieces of artwork, and then have enough confidence in their own creative ability to showcase their work for scrutiny by the wider community, is admirable. For Holly such a feat is astounding. The Westerner first reported on Holly’s heartbreaking plight six years ago. Just after Christmas in 2008 – a couple of days after her 24th birthday and a few weeks after taking on a dream job working in a dressage stable in Germany – she was kicked in the head by a horse. The Westerner has been proud to follow Holly’s progress during the recovery from the damage her brain and body endured that day, whether it be reconnecting with her beloved horses or walking down the aisle as a bridesmaid at her friend’s wedding. Holly’s story is also one of the supportive Samford community that has been behind her every step of her journey.

MP denies second bid for Gold Coast seat after being re-elected with 49 per cent of the vote. When questioned if he was again attempting to leave the Dickson electorate, Mr Dutton said the Palm Beach house was purchased as an investment property. “It is a beach house that will be rented out and if it is vacant on school holidays or a weekend when we have no electorate and kids’ sports commitments we might go down there as a family,” he said. Mr Dutton said he has no plans to move from Samford to the Gold Coast and will recontest the seat of Dickson, which he has held since 2001, at the next election. “I made a mistake (trying to move to McPherson). I will not make that mistake again,” he said. “Our home for 12 years has been in Camp Mountain. Our boys have gone and are going to school at Samford. “I am 44 (years old) and not retiring for a long time. I will be contesting the next election and will be asking locals for support on the basis of working hard for our local communities and as Minister for Immigration and Border Protection.”

By Damian Staveley and Lee Oliver

F

ederal Member for Dickson Peter Dutton says he has no plans to leave the electorate, despite buying property in the Gold Coast district where he sought Liberal National Party pre-selection five years ago. The Gold Coast Bulletin reported that Mr Dutton has purchased a two-storey beachfront home within the electorate of McPherson, which he tried to move to in the lead-up to the 2010 election. Mr Dutton argued at the time that boundary changes to the Dickson electorate caused it to become a nominally Labor seat. “The choice you’re faced with is if you want to continue to make a contribution in public life or not, and that’s the reason why I was forced into making that decision,” Mr Dutton told The Westerner in late 2009. However, Mr Dutton lost pre-selection for the seat of McPherson to Gold Coast local Karen Andrews. He then returned to Dickson and remained in office

Member for Dickson Peter Dutton has refuted suggestions he could bid to run for a seat on the Gold Coast at the next Federal Election.

Alien adventures in a foreign land

A Helen Hornibrook, Warner

Helen is a painter who is a member of the Slab Hut Gallery at Samford and the Dayboro Art Gallery. I realised I had creative talent… when working as a florist. My floral art was good. What I enjoy most about painting... When painting, you need to be completely immersed in what you are doing, knowing that the world can wait awhile, and you will probably end with something you can be proud of. It is both relaxation and achievement. The qualities needed to become a good painter… The only qualities needed are readiness to experiment with the whole range of colour, shape, composition and texture added to determination, not to settle for less than you are pleased with. I have many works that I have yet to ‘finish’ because they are not good enough. The inspiration for my artwork… Inspiration is in everything I see, particularly the shape of roses, misty vistas and quiet creeks. Local landscapes I have painted… I continually paint Cedar Creek, Golden Valley and farm buildings in the local area. If my artwork could be displayed anywhere in the world... Having my work displayed in many homes is the most gratifying and rewarding thing in my life. Apart from art I enjoy… photography, both to expand my reference data, and to create the best picture I can. The garden is now a main occupation, but I have travelled a lot. Something most people don’t know about me… I was bought up on a small farm, milking cows. I lived in a small corrugated iron home and rode a pony five miles to school. When I was young the job I wanted to do when I grew up… I actually wanted to be a ballet dancer, but my first job was an as apprentice hairdresser, both creative I guess. If I could do one thing to make the world a better place... I would like to feed starving children. Helen Hornibrook is the featured artist at the Dayboro Art Gallery in April. The gallery, at the corner of William Street and Mt Mee Road, Dayboro is open daily from 10am to 3pm. Phone 3425 2000.

Mt Glorious man and his extra terrestrial buddy recently beamed over to the United States as guests of the world’s biggest UFO convention. Alan Groves and his Zetan aliens were invited to attend the 24th International UFO Congress in Scottsdale, Arizona last month. “There seems to be a great interest by the general public in UFO related phenomenon both in the US and probably every country in the world,” Alan said. “It would surprise most people how many believe in this stuff, let alone the folks who have actually seen something otherworldly. “Nearly all the people we met… had had some sort of alien encounter, from witnessing lights or craft to actually being abducted by physical beings.” Some “very famous faces in the UFO world” attended the convention including

nuclear physicist Stanton Friedman who investigated the famous Roswell crash, UFO whistle blower Bob Lazar, and Travis

Walton, whose experience inspired the alien abduction movie Fire in the Sky. Alan attended ‘UFO Con’ to promote

Zetan, the lifesize alien models he makes, and was interviewed by NBC News, the Science Channel, the Science Fiction Channel and UK’s The Sun newspaper. He also visited landmarks such as the Grand Canyon and a giant meteor crater in Arizona, as well as a few UFO hot spots. “(Arizona) is a beautiful state with many amazing geological features and a fantastic landscape, so I decided to spend a few weeks touring the sights and photographing my alien in famous places – just as you would with your garden gnome!” Alan and Zetan also visited Rachel, a town steeped in UFO history and located near the fabled Area 51 on Highway 375, dubbed the ‘Extraterrestrial Highway’. “Towns like Rachel in Nevada and Roswell in New Mexico... only really exist due to the passing trade in alien hunters,” said Alan, who has witnessed “lots of strange phenomenon in the skies over the years”. homegrown music event will return later this year after Moreton Bay Regional Council granted organisers a permanent permit to host the festival at Mt Samson. Following a hiatus in 2014 the Red Deer Music and Arts Festival, Brisbane’s only BYO camping and music festival, will return on 3 October.

parking, noise and waste and a council review of the approval after an initial period of three years.” Sean Graham from Red Deer Fest said its organisers spent 18 months “making sure the festival site is safe and capable of permanently hosting this event”. “It was pretty stressful and pretty taxing but we’re super excited about getting it

More interstate and local music acts such as The Lyrical will have the chance to perform at the Red Deer Fest, after the event was given the green light to return to Mt Samson this year.

Between 2010 and 2013 the annual festival operated on a temporary council permit. Approval for a Material Change of Use application for the 16-hectare festival site at Foggs Road now “provides certainty for the future of the festival in the years ahead”, Moreton Bay Region Division 11 councillor Bob Millar says. “Red Deer Festival is a niche music festival event that’s become part of the Moreton Bay Region’s cultural calendar, which is why Council has been keen to reach an outcome that allows the festival to continue while also minimising, as much as possible, the impact on neighbouring properties,” he said. “Conditions have been placed on the development approval by Council including a cap on the number of tickets that can be sold, management plans for traffic,

(the application approval) because it means we have some security and permanency on this site,” he said. Mr Graham said the Red Deer Festival would remain a low-scale event for around 1000 patrons, adding: “We want to make sure we’re looking after the local neighbourhood and the local community”. He said the “overwhelming majority” of more than 200 letters received by Council during the public consultation period were in support of the festival. As well as hosting established national acts such as Regurgitator and The Grates, the festival has helped to launch the international music careers of the likes of The Kite String Tangle, aka Danny Harley who grew up at Samford. Early-bird tickets for the festival went on sale on Friday at www.reddeerfest.com.au.

POLICE BEAT Dangerous driving charges, Strathpine: Police charged two people with numerous offences after intercepting a vehicle at Strathpine on 29 March. Around 7.50pm, officers attended a Dayboro address where a vehicle allegedly drove at speed toward police vehicles before driving away. A tyre-deflation device was deployed on all four tyres on Winn Road at Cashmere, however the vehicle continued to travel on its rims through Warner, Bray Park and Lawnton. The three occupants of the car were apprehended, including an 18-yearold Dayboro man who was charged with assaulting police and will appear in Pine Rivers Magistrates Court on 20 April. Criminal motorcycle gang arrests, Eatons Hill: Investigations into allegations that members of the Rebels criminal motorcycle gang were attempting to recruit people to join a new chapter of the gang led to Taskforce Maxima executing search warrants at residences in Eatons Hill, Scarborough and Redcliffe on 25 March. The searches led to the arrests of five men, who will appear in Redcliffe Magistrates Court on 15 April.

Affray charges, Lawnton: Two Lawnton men, both 19, have been charged with affray and are due to appear in Pine Rivers Magistrates Court on 20 April following an incident that occurred in Lawnton on 27 March. Police were called to Myles Street around 11pm following reports of an assault. A 31-year-old man was found with non-life-threatening head and facial injuries and was transported to hospital. Drowning fatality, Mt Samson: Police are investigating after a man died after crashing his car into a dam at Mt Samson on 25 March. Fire and ambulance crews were called to the scene near Foggs Road, and firefighters later recovered the man’s body from the water. Car trailer stolen, Dayboro: Police are investigating the theft of a car trailer from a business on William Street, Dayboro that occurred on 22 March around 4am. Police are checking camera footage from an adjacent business for clues.

Fatal traffic crash, Arana Hills: A man died following a single vehicle traffic crash at Arana Hills on 20 March. It is believed the car was travelling on Patricks Road when it left the roadway and collided with a power pole. The driver, a 38-year-old Ferny Hills man, died at the scene.

Smashing new home for tennis club

T

he new home of Dayboro Tennis is a smash hit, with the club experiencing an upswing in member numbers since its modern clubhouse opened. Dayboro Tennis Club’s Angela Stanton said the new facility has “brightened up the whole area”. “Being able to watch children’s tennis lessons outside and under cover from our viewing deck is a huge benefit,” she said. She said the previous Dayboro Tennis clubhouse, built around 1975, was “not an inviting building”. “It was very basic, with one room with concrete floor and roller shutter access to

courts, a sink with only cold water and a room at the back used for storage and as a servery for events,” she said. The new clubhouse, featuring a canteen area and two large storage sheds, follows installation of two new courts to replace ones ruined by floodwaters in 2011. “Now with this beautiful building to complement the courts, it has never been a better time for Dayboro to pick up a racquet and play,” Ms Stanton said. Moreton Bay Regional Council contributed $358,000 for construction of the clubhouse, officially opened by Councillor Bob Millar (Division 11) on Friday night.

Quake skills help SES ace Warner’s Sonia Cuff won an award for her work with the Arana Hills unit of the State Emergency Service.

S

onia Cuff spends more time looking up at the sky and studying weather forecasts than most of us. As the deputy leader of the Arana Hills unit of the State Emergency Service (SES), she is always forward planning in case of a heavy rain event in the district. The Warner resident admitted she spent a day in front of her computer checking weather conditions “even before the rain event developed into Cyclone Marcia”. “When there’s a big event coming you

do end up putting in a lot of extra hours,” Mrs Cuff said. Following the big wet in the region last month she had “been up ladders and putting up tarps” as part of clean-up efforts across the Arana Hills and Petrie SES districts. Mrs Cuff, who trains and volunteers with the SES at least eight hours a week, was named Moreton Bay SES Unit Member of the Year for 2014. She joined the SES nine years ago after

working in New Zealand, finding it was the “closest fit” for utilising the skill set she had acquired in her homeland. “I am actually trained in urban search and rescue for pulling people out of buildings following earthquakes,” Mrs Cuff said. “I wanted to use that similar skill set but still have the flexibility of being a volunteer. “In New Zealand we were trained for the one task but with the SES there’s such a wide scope. “If there’s not a storm event there’s so many other tasks when you’re in the SES, whether it be at a community event doing traffic control, search and rescue or helping police to find evidence.” There are seven SES groups in the Moreton Bay Region, located at Arana Hills, Petrie, Woodford, Bribie Island, Caboolture, Redcliffe and Deception Bay. SAMFORD VALLEY VETERINARY HOSPITAL EQUINE PRACTICE

Holly’s recovery coming into picture

S

even years ago she was fighting for life after being kicked in the head by a horse. Now Holly Mason is set to showcase her creativity at her first solo art exhibition. The 30-year-old will display around 100 of her artworks at Samford on 1 May. After her accident in Germany in December 2008, Holly, who now walks with the help of a walker and communicates via an iPad, couldn’t hold a pencil or a paint brush. “After my accident the first drawing I did was a single line. (It was) frustrating because I knew I could do better,” Holly told The Westerner via email. “Creating it brought back many memories of joyfully creating better art so I was inspired to move my badly paralysed muscles to draw. “I love creating art, I think of pictures every day to paint or draw. I do it by myself. It is important for me (as) I like to be independent.” The subjects of the animal lover’s art, created with acrylic and pastel paints, pencils, graphite, charcoal, felt-tip pens and clay, include horses, birds, chickens, dogs and frogs. “Flowers are fun and I like making fantasy animals and dragons. I do people as well,” the Samford Valley resident explains. Barbara Kienast from the Samford Support Network, which is presenting next month’s art show, said the event would “celebrate Holly’s amazing recovery”. “The exhibition will show pictures before Holly’s accident and her amazing recovery from her serious brain injuries,” she said. “The community will see what hard work, passion and family support can achieve.” Holly, who is a member of the Samford Artworks group, said she was “pleased to share my work to show my ability”. “I am more than what my accident made me,” she said. “I am happy to be alive and want to share that with everyone.” Holly’s artworks will be available for purchase at the exhibition at Topiaries at Beaumont House, 961 Eatons Crossing Road, Draper on 1 May from 5pm. Entry is $5 with funds raised to cover the cost of transporting Holly’s tricycle from Germany to Australia.

Dayboro lassoes rodeo upgrade

T

he head of rodeo events in Dayboro hopes new facilities will result in increased participation in the sport in the town. Moreton Bay Regional Council has delivered a new $240,000 holding yard and spectator stand for the rodeo complex at the Dayboro Showgrounds. The Dayboro Rodeo Association’s President Jacqui French hopes the upgraded facility, coupled with a new arena installed a few years ago, would make Dayboro Showgrounds an epicentre for local equine sports enthusiasts. She also hopes that local people wanting to try rodeo disciplines will be encouraged to give the sport a go at the new complex. “Hopefully with the new structure they’ll know that we’re a little more serious,” Mrs French said, adding the revamped facility is available to hire. She hopes that groups such as the Caboolture Cow Horse Club will use the facility, where about $65,000 was spent on upgrading the rodeo arena three years ago, as regular tenants. “It’s going to open it up to a lot more people in different groups, so it’s not just the rodeo (using the arena),” Mrs French said. Mrs French said the dilapidated rodeo spectator area and holding yards were in desperate need of repair, noting: “I think the holding yards were 40 years old.” Moreton Bay Region Councillor Bob Millar (Division 11) said steel had been used to build the new holding yard and spectator grandstand, not only to increase bull and spectator capacity but also durability. “The previous rodeo arena infrastructure was predominately timber, and after many years of service and exposure to the elements had reached the end its useable life,” Cr Millar said. “Council has worked closely with the Dayboro Rodeo Association to deliver a suitable design and space that’s also safer for rodeo competitors and spectators. The renovation upgrade gives rodeo the space it needs to grow at Dayboro.” The rodeo holding yard and spectator stand upgrade is part of Moreton Bay Regional Council’s $67 million investment in parks, recreation and sport in 2014/15. The revamped facility will host its first event, the Dayboro Rodeo, on 3 May.

Ross Crouch from Warner and Louis Spelta from Cashmere with their classic cars.

L

ouis Spelta reckons his car keeps him feeling young. The 53-year-old from Cashmere has been the proud owner of a 1966 Ford Mustang convertible for 27 years. It’s the car he has wanted to own since he was a child. “I grew up around Gaythorne and when I was a young kid in the 1960s we used to pass a place on one of the main roads that actually had a Mustang, a red convertible,” Mr Spelta recalls. “I just like the old style (cars); they look cool and they’re easy to fix.” On the other side of the Ford-Holden rivalry, Louis’s mate Ross Crouch owns three Holden muscle cars manufactured between 1968 and 1977, including a 1974 HQ Premier that he’s spent about $100,000 on.

The 52-year-old Warner resident, whose passion for cars started “from the moment I got my licence”, also has an American 1967 Chevrolet in his garage. “Most people lean one way or the other; you either like the American muscle cars or the Australian muscle cars,” Mr Crouch says. “I’ve had a passion for cars for over 30 years. I’ve owned probably 100 cars in that time. “It’s an expensive hobby but it’s very enjoyable too. Brisbane’s biggest monthly car show for classic vehicles made before 1986, its events draw more than 4000 people enjoying between 700 and 750 vehicles at each car meet. “I like to support these things because they raise a lot of money for charity and it’s good meeting up with all the other guys,” Mr Spelta said. “It’s a real enthusiasts’ night. We’re not 18-year-old guys driving around dropping burnouts, we’re just cruising around in life.” Old Skool Cars ‘n’ Street Machines meets are held from 5.30pm on the first Saturday of each month at Westfield North Lakes. Steve Cowley from the Samford Homestead Restaurant, with the venue’s famous ‘waiter’, has retired.

Restaurateur serves up final meal

A

farewell function was held on Tuesday night for retiring restaurateur Steve Cowley, of the Samford Homestead Restaurant. He said highlights of running the restaurant over the past 15 years included hosting fundraisers for the likes of young stroke victim Sarah Gapp and brain damage sufferer Holly Mason, helping hospitality course graduates gain jobs in the workforce, and seeing young staff members “mature into worthy members of the human race”. Mr Cowley, who nearly lost his life in a major fire at the restaurant in 2013, also values the close associations he has forged with Samford’s Rotary, Lions and Chamber of Commerce groups, which regularly held meetings and functions at the restaurant. During his 40-year career as a restaurateur and caterer Mr Cowley has also been involved with the Mon Ami restaurant at Arana Hills and The Odd Couple restaurant at Everton Park and has catered for former Australian Prime Ministers Gough Whitlam, Bob Hawke, Paul Keating and Malcolm Fraser. And what will become of the iconic waiter statue that has stood at the front of the Samford Homestead Restaurant for many years? “The future of the little waiter outside of the restaurant is unclear but I will not miss him following me around all day,” Mr Cowley joked.

Samford Homestead Restaurant Steve and family thank you for your support and friendship over many years. Good bye. Main Street, Samford Village Ph 3289 1485 www.samfordhomestead.com.au

ighteen months after a team of its students won a global competition to design and race miniature Formula One cars, Pine Rivers State High School is again set to represent Australia on the world stage. Pine Rivers’ six-member team of Lily Eiseman, Kienan Wagner, Taj Gieskens, Hanna Baptista, Beau Gieskens and Indi Harris will travel to London in June to contest the world final of the Land Rover 4x4 Technology Challenge. The local team, dubbed the ‘Wombat Warriors’, earned a trip to England after winning the inaugural Australian final of the competition in Melbourne last month, which coincided with the Australian Formula One Grand Prix. The competition was staged in a purpose built pavilion alongside the Albert Park circuit and held in conjunction with the national final of the F1 in Schools Technology Challenge. Wombat Warriors team manager Lily

Eiseman said teams had to design and drive a 1:16 scale four-wheel drive vehicle. “We get a base model slickrock and have to make modifications to it such as adding in a light sensor and a tilt sensor, which activate on their own,” she said. The vehicle had to be driven remotely through a series of courses with steep climbs, bends, obstacles and witches hats, whilst towing a miniature trailer. “We also had to create a portfolio, a pit display, a logo and team name,” Lily said. “This school has a very big passion for F1 in Schools so when we heard about the 4x4 (Technology Challenge) for schools it was really exciting.” Indi Harris said her team and its teacher and mentor Corey Gieskens have “given up a lot of Saturdays and school holidays” to fine-tune their winning vehicle design. Beau Gieskens from Wombat Warriors was a member of Pine Rivers State High’s A1 Racing team that won the 2013 F1 in Schools world final in Texas, USA.

Bridge funding claim is troubling There is a comment from Moreton Bay Reg ion Councillor Mick Gillam in Damian Staveley ’s article entitled “Candidate questions Cou ncil rates spend” (‘The Westerner’, 19 February 2015) that is factually incorrect, where Cr Gillam takes credit for a project that had no funding from Council. In Damian’s article, Cr Gillam noted only a few years ago locals received the benefit of an upgraded AJ Wyllie Bridge on Gympie Road at Petrie. “That’s a pretty hefty price tag and that was three years ago,” Cr Gillam said. Cr Gillam is misleading with this statemen t. This project was delivered under the Natu ral Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA), a joint Federal and State initia tive. Under these arrangements, the Australia n Government provided 75 per cent of the funding, with 25 per cent from the Queensl and Government. See http://qldreconstruction .org. au/ndrra for more information about NDR RA funding splits. Cr Gillam should prove where Council’s “hefty” contribution to this project was, because as the State Member for Pine Rive rs at the time, I can assure you there was no such contribution. I’d be interested in hearing Cr Gillam’s justification for this claim.

Drivers can steer road safety I would like to comment on the article “Safety concerns over Samford Road surface” in the 5 March edition of ‘The Westerner’. The article reports on one factor that could have contributed to the crashes on the range these past couple of weeks – the road surface. Numerate citizens should question data and not infer causation or draw conclusions from one factor alone. There are a number of other factors that could also have contributed. This stretch of road is downhill and on a bend, requiring motorists to brake. The road surface there will have a higher concentration of brake dust. Are there more incidents on this stretch of road because it is the section just around the bend on the downhill stretch? What was the drivers’ reaction? Was it to keep their foot on the brake to try to stop? I hope our new State Member, mentioned in this article as investigating the matter, will do so in a numerate manner. We too have lived in Samford for 25-plus years and not had any dramas on that stretch of road including before it was upgraded and before the speed limit was reduced. I have travelled this road in very heavy rain and I believe that stretch of road works just fine dispersing water. Driving to the conditions and defensive driving education could be further factors to consider that might just reduce accidents. Judy Hartnett, Closeburn

Sugary drinks hurt youth

ore than half of Queenslanders aged 14 to 24 are consuming more than 3kg of sugar annually just in sugary drinks. Diabetes Queensland’s CEO Michelle Trute has responded to new figures from Roy Morgan Research showing more than half of Australian young people were drinking at least one sugary drink a week. “Every year young Queenslanders are literally pouring 3.3 kilograms, or 832 teaspoons, of sugar down their throats just in sugary drinks,” Ms Trute said. “Sugary drinks are nutritional black holes with no health benefit and containing almost nothing but sugar. “If you laid that amount of sugar out on the table most people would baulk at it but when you hide it in a drink it’s easy for people to ignore the negative effects on health.” Ms Trute said regular consumption of products such as sugary drinks was contributing to Queensland’s obesity epidemic. “The 2014 Queensland Chief Health Officer’s Report found almost 39 per

cent of Queenslanders aged 18 to 24 are overweight or obese,” she said. “While sugar doesn’t directly contribute to type 2 diabetes it does lead to people becoming overweight or obese, which contributes to the development of serious conditions like type 2 diabetes, which leads to consequences such as limb amputation and blindness.” Ms Trute said Diabetes Queensland’s position was in line with the World Health Organisation, which recently reduced new guidelines on sugar consumption. “(It) recommends adults and children reduce their consumption of sugar to less than 10 per cent of their total energy intake or around 12 grams,” she said. “To put that in perspective there are 64 grams of sugar in one 600ml bottle of sugary drink.” Ms Trute encouraged all Queenslanders to choose water over sugary drinks. “Water really is the best option to keep yourself hydrated,” she said. “If you would like to jazz up your glass of water why not add fresh mint leaves or some slices of citrus fruit?”

Get Hard Film critics genuinely confuse me. They appear to give leniency to certain films with offensive content on a case-by-case basis without any kind of consistency. If you look at any review for Get Hard you’ll see it described as homophobic and racist. No one seems to be talking about whether it’s funny or not, which is odd given it’s a comedy. Anyway, Get Hard is not as bad as you’ve heard. It’s actually pretty decent, but by no means a great comedy. The plot is simple enough. A yuppie financial trader, James King (Will Ferrell) is about to go to jail for fraud and hires the only black person he knows, a car-cleaner named Darnell (Kevin Hart), to train him for prison. The only problem is Darnell has never been to jail, but taking advantage of James’ ignorance he stays quiet and hilarity ensures. Much of the set-up for Get Hard, much like its double entendre title, serves little purpose other than to pave the way for 90 minutes of prison rape jokes. Is this offensive? I don’t really know. It’s a comedy and it’s trying to be funny, no one is being harmed and in comedy no subject should ever be off limits, so I don’t think so. Something done with a bit of polish and credibility, like American Sniper, is much more offensive because its ability to manipulate reaches further. I don’t think anyone will change his or her opinions on anything after watching Get Hard. There’s plenty of films to be offended about, but comedies are usually the dumbest place to take a stand on moral grounds. Besides, if Mel Brooks was allowed to lampoon Nazis in The Producers, why can’t white and black comedians lampoon race stereotypes? Most of the humour in Get Hard is more manic than anything personal, relying on injury or violence. As for the homophobia angle, I don’t see it. I don’t recall any homosexuality in the film being depicted as gross or horrifying, just a lot of insecure hetero men constantly reminding people that they’re straight. Did the film make me laugh? Yes it did, and that’s all that matters I suppose. Hart and Ferrell have good chemistry and there’s a real sweetness to Hart. He’s very likeable and will be around for a long time. How else can you review such a film that aims low and hits all the marks? 6/10

Cashmere’s Callum Smith is a member of the Brisbane Barracudas team in the National Water Polo League.

Barracudas bare teeth in battle for championship

C

allum Smith says his Brisbane Barracudas team needs to learn to win the crunch games if it is to claim an elusive National Water Polo League (NWPL) title. The Barracudas have been finals regulars this decade but haven’t won the men’s national league since claiming its only title back in 2004. “We’ve made the top six the last couple of years now,” Smith said. “The last couple of seasons we have been consistent but we haven’t been able to cross the line and win a premiership. “(Brisbane will win by) putting four quarters together of good defence and good attack and just playing the type of game we play.” Smith, a Cashmere resident who lines up alongside international players from USA, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, says the fifth-placed Barracudas are currently “looking in a good position to be in the top six”. The finals for the 12-team competition, which features teams from Brisbane, Sydney, Fremantle, Adelaide, Newcastle, Melbourne and Perth, start in Sydney on 8 May. A former junior player at the North Brisbane Polo Bears club at Albany Creek, Smith believes two Sydney outfits are the teams to beat this season. “We like getting a win over every team, no matter who it is, but this season probably the two strongest teams are Sydney Uni Lions and the Wests Magpies,” he said. While the Barracudas men has won one NWPL title its women’s team, which currently boasts five Australian Stingers players as well as teenage goalkeeper Octavia Bellekens from Cedar Creek, has claimed four of the past six national championships. “As a club as a whole we want success for both the men’s and women’s teams and definitely them winning so many (championships) does inspire us,” Smith said. A 19-year-old, 198cm centre back, Smith “hasn’t been able to get out of the pool” since transitioning from AFL to water polo while a student at Albany Hills State School. He has since represented Australia at junior level in countries such as Italy, Greece and Germany. Following a mid-season break and NWPL All-Star Games at the Gold Coast (men) and Wodonga (women), the Brisbane Barracudas’ men’s and women’s seasons will resume against the University of Western Australia Torpedoes in Perth on 23 April. The Barracudas will then play the Queensland Breakers in a Brisbane derby doubleheader in the Fortitude Valley pool on 2 May. Visit www.waterpoloaustralia.com.au/nwpl www.thewesterner.com.au

sport Tiarna’s swinging towards gym goal

Tiarna Le Mura, in action at last year’s national gymnastics championships, has the 2018 Commonwealth Games in her sights. Photo by WinkiPoP Media.

N

Nominating the floor and vault as her favourite disciplines of artistic gymnastics, Le Mura is equally adept on the beams and bars. She was a member of winning teams at last year’s Queensland and Australian championships and claimed her first state individual all round gymnastics crown in 2014. “Individual (competition) is good because it’s not affecting the team (score), but I like how when you’re in a team you have the whole support of the team behind you,” Le Mura said. “If you make a mistake they’re there to pick it up and do better when they go on the floor.” Next Le Mura will contest the Queensland Gymnastics Championships at the Sleeman Sports Complex at Chandler running from 9-13 April, followed by the Australian titles in Victoria in May. After placing eighth in her individual competition at last year’s national championships, Le Mura is hoping for a top-four finish at Hisense Arena in Melbourne.

o one could question Tiarna Le Mura’s dedication to her sport. The 15-year-old makes a twohour round trip from her Cashmere home to Moreton Bay College at Wynnum each day to study and train in artistic gymnastics. Le Mura trains at least five hours a day, up to 26 hours each week in her pursuit of excellence – and it’s been that way for the past seven years. She doesn’t begrudge her intensive training regime, instead enjoying her time on the gym mat as much as she did when she started in the sport as a four-year-old at Albany Creek Gymnastics. “Sometimes (training) gets tough around comp season but most of the time it’s still fun and enjoyable,” Le Mura said. “It’s hard balancing school but I think it’s possible to still do well in both (sport and study).” Within the next two years Le Mura aims to advance to Level 9 status and compete for Australia, as her former training partner and favourite gymnast Larissa Miller has done.

Another long-term goal is to represent her country at the biggest multi-sport event to be held in Queensland in 36 years. “It would mean quite a lot to me to be able to go to the (2018 Gold Coast) Commonwealth Games and represent at that competition, especially being so close to Brisbane,” said Le Mura, who lives not far from the family home of three-time Olympic gymnast Lisa Skinner.
