Elect to vote #1: democracy at the polls That time has come again, when the pesky part of our Government system – called elections – interrupt our lives. Election ads eat into our television programming, party propaganda fills our letterboxes, and political supporters dressed in red, green and blue stand on footpaths and street corners and wave their hands as if they are trying their hardest to distract drivers in traffic. Many people bemoan having to front up to the polling booth every couple of years. Some argue that in the political game it’s not just a case of “out with the old and in with the new”, but “out with the bad and in with the bad.” You may regard voting as a chore, however we are privileged to have the right to have our say in the political make-up of our governments. If you are considering wasting your vote on election day, if you refuse to front up at a polling booth, or if you have chosen not to enrol to vote, remember this: If you don’t vote do you really have the right to complain about the state of the government? No, I don’t think you do.

LNP fights to maintain political hold over region By Damian Staveley and Lee Oliver

T

he Australian Labor Party (ALP) is hoping to reclaim its former stronghold over three electorates in The Westerner region held by the Liberal National Party (LNP) when Queenslanders go the polls on 31 January. Tim Mander, Seath Holswich and Dale Shuttleworth hold the seats of Everton, Pine Rivers and Ferny Grove, respectively, following a huge voter swing against the ALP in the 2012 election. The three ALP candidates said locals are concerned about proposed asset sales/ leases, the rising cost of living and high levels of unemployment. Jeff Frew, the ALP candidate for Everton, said the LNP implemented its economic plan with too much haste. “Local families believe (Premier) Campbell Newman made too many cuts, too fast, and simply doesn’t listen to their concerns, which is why he is pushing ahead with privatisation,” Mr Frew said. ALP candidates for Ferny Grove and Pine Rivers, Mark Furner and Nikki Boyd, both claim the current local LNP MPs are rubber stamps for the Premier. “There has been a lack of willingness to stand up for what locals actually want,” Mr Furner said. “In doorknocking more than half of the Ferny Grove electorate in the last seven months people have told me time and again about how they or a family member has been forced out of work.” Mrs Boyd also took aim at the LNP’s plan to lease State assets for periods up to 99 years, which the ALP argues is the equivalent of an asset sale. “I am committed to not selling out State-

owned assets, which would put even more financial pressure on households who are already struggling with increased power bills,” she said. But the LNP MPs have fiercely defended their performance over the past three years. Mr Shuttleworth said the LNP’s revitalisation of frontline services resulted in a “marked decrease” in both unlawful entry and crimes against a person. He said if re-elected he would deliver improvements to local schools and “fight for safer roads in Ferny Grove/Upper Kedron and Samford areas”. Mr Holswich said significant funding had been provided to schools within the Pine Rivers electorate, including $2.3 million to improve literacy and numeracy and $2.6 million “to eliminate the backlog of school maintenance jobs Labor left unfunded.” Mr Mander also mentioned the LNP’s track record on education. “In under three years I’ve delivered a $7.5 million performing arts complex at Albany Creek High (School), secured the future of Everton Park State High (and) installed flashing lights to boost safety at eight schools,” he said. Both Mr Mander and Mr Holswich said they would work to provide better public transport and road infrastructure should they be re-elected. The minor parties and independent candidates have also stated their claim in the election race. Mark Taverner, Palmer United Party candidate for Ferny Grove, listed public transport, roads and community growth as priorities. Continued on page 10

Wright stuff for national award

J Emma Williams, Camp Mountain

Emma is the new manager of the Samford community pool. She is just the third operator of the complex since the pool opened in 1991. How I came to manage the Samford pool… I have been working at the pool for the last 18 months and the opportunity came up when the pool went up for government tender, so I thought why not give it a go! My personal history with the pool... I had my first swimming lesson at the age of three at the pool, I joined the Stingrays Swimming Club when I was six years old, and I had my first after school job here doing cleaning and kiosk work when I was 13 years old. My fondest memories of going to the Samford pool as a child... Winning age champion in the school swimming carnivals. The best things about working where I do... I enjoy working in the local community and the smile on the kids’ faces when they have achieved their goals. Services and activities offered by Samford Aquatics... Learn to swim program from six months to adults, swim squads, aqua aerobics, casual swimming. Sporting and recreational pursuits I enjoy… Anything involving water! Swimming, water skiing, water polo, underwater hockey. Highlights of my sporting career... Travelling to Europe with the Australia Under 21 water polo team and stopping five-metre penalty shots from Hungarian national players. When I was young the job I wanted to do when I grew up… Vet. The best advice I have been given… You don’t know until you have given it a go! How I made my first dollar… Baby sitting. In ten years time I hope to be... having fun with the people in my life. The Samford community pool, trading as Samford Aquatics, is located at School Road, Samford Village. Phone 3289 3815 and find Samford Aquatics on Facebook.

uliette Wright says her Australian of the Year Award recognition has revitalised and enhanced her passion for helping others. The Camp Mountain resident is the founder of the Givit.org.au website, which helps link items sought by charities and people in need with the people who are in a position to donate those goods. The recipient of Queensland’s Australian Local Hero award, Mrs Wright is now in line for the national award, which will be presented in Canberra this weekend. “Givit’s been a lot of hard work. When I was a Queensland finalist I had this very proud feeling and then realised that people noticed I was working really hard,” Mrs Wright said. “It (the award nomination) gave me more energy and when I was acknowledged (as the winner) it gave me even more energy. “It revitalised me and made me go into fifth gear again. I’ve got so much energy going into 2015.” Mrs Wright said Givit, which has partnered with the Queensland Government to help people in need following natural disasters, had exceeded expectations. “When I first started Givit I did not know if people wanted to give directly and then from the moment I launched I just had to

manage phenomenal growth,” she said. “It’s been so heart-warming and overwhelming and wonderful to have such an incredible amount of donors. “People are just driven to make sure (other) people… get what they need. I think the Queensland floods (of 2011) really ingrained in me that we (Australians) are among the most generous people in the world. “I’m just lucky that I get to witness that through the Givit platform and I’m really grateful.” Mrs Wright is appreciative of not only the people who have donated items via Givit, but also the charity’s volunteer workers. “I have 15 volunteers and Givit would not be possible without them, so I am very aware that I am just representing Givit,” she said. The Australia Day Council has organised for Australian of the Year finalists to have morning tea with Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove and lunch with Prime Minister Tony Abbott, before Saturday night’s awards ceremony.

Juliette Wright of Camp Mountain is an Australian of the Year finalist.

Billboard seen to be ‘obscene’ “What maddens me even more is that there are no less than three childcare centres within metres of this pornographic sign, one church also and the Eatons Hill State School.” The Comiskey Group owns the Eatons Hill Hotel and established Tadpoles Early Learning Centres. A Tadpoles childcare centre is located less than 300m from the hotel and the Puppetry of the Penis billboard. “This shows what he (Comiskey Group Director Paul Comiskey) really thinks of the children in our suburb,” Mrs Edwards said. The Comiskey Group did not respond to questions from The Westerner before the paper went to print. Mrs Edwards has relayed her concerns to Moreton Bay councillor Mike Charlton (Division 9) and Federal Member for Dickson Peter Dutton. Puppetry of the Penis, an Australian show in which two nude men contort their genitalia into various shapes, has been toured around Europe, North America, Scandinavia, South America, New Zealand and South Africa.

n Eatons Hill resident has raised concerns regarding an “almost pornographic” advertisement for a risqué performance at her local hotel. Katy Edwards considers herself a “very broad-minded grandmother” but she is appalled by a large billboard on South Pine Road promoting the Puppetry of the Penis show at the Eatons Hill Hotel. She labelled the billboard, which only has text and features a disclaimer for the adults-only show proclaiming: “Warning: This show may contain traces of nuts!”, as “blatant and almost pornographic advertising”. Mrs Edwards is concerned for the “hundreds of children (who) pass by this sign every day by car”, including her grandchildren, two of whom were “exposed to this obscenity for many minutes” when stuck in traffic near the billboard. “I was forced to stop my car right beside this sight due to a traffic hold-up, and two of my grandchildren were exposed to this obscenity for many minutes,” she said. “In fact my grandson says that he can’t get it out of his mind now.

Closeburn’s Trevor Ryan rides his 130-year-old penny-farthing bicycle, which will feature at Australia Day celebrations at the Samford Historical Museum on Monday.

I

t’s amazing what treasures you can find buried in strange places. Trevor Ryan has been smitten with penny-farthing bicycles for more than 50 years. One of his high-wheeler bikes, distinguished by a large front wheel and a small rear wheel, was built in Britain in the 1880s. The Closeburn resident acquired the machine more than a century later in fortuitous circumstances. “This one was pulled out of the mud of the banks of the Brisbane River when they were building the new airport,” Mr Ryan recalls. “The handlebars were sticking out of the mud of Moreton Bay and the bulldozer driver pulled it out. I got it off him directly and had it built up from that.” Mr Ryan will show off his restored penny-farthing bike when the Samford Historical Museum opens its doors for Australia Day celebrations on 26 January. “People are always interested and there’s always smiles on their faces, and that’s why I like riding it,” he said. “I’ve just always loved old machinery. I’ve been riding them since I was about 19 and I’m 71 now. “I only ride once or twice a year now but I used to ride them down at Evandale in Tasmania, where they have an annual (penny-farthing bike) race.” There will be plenty of hallmarks of eras past at the Australia Day event at the Samford Historical Museum, from vintage motorbikes and sidecars and rug and butter making, to a Medieval blacksmith working at his forge. Other attractions will include a model railway, which visitors can operate, Bob the Beeman, a music machine, treasure hunt, tattoo man and entertainment from the Royal Bounty Bush Band and flyball dogs. Visitors can also enjoy refreshments such as tea and coffee, delicious treats and a true blue Aussie tradition – sausage sizzle and steak burgers. Admission is $12 for families, $6 for adults and $2 for students and children. The Samford Historical Museum is at Station Street, Samford Village. Phone 3289 2473 or 0417 610 983.

community Dayboro’s Lee Tapper was named the 2014 Rural Fire Service Volunteer of the Year. Photo by Nadine Andersen Photography.

“I came from a rural background and my father was a fire captain many years ago… and I’ve just always been a communityminded person,” she said. “I lost my husband in 2001 and I just decided then and there to get up off my backside and go and join a community group. “I wandered up the road to the Ocean View Rural Fire Brigade and was welcomed with open arms and these people became my guardians and my mentors… and it’s gone on from there.” Dayboro and District Rural Fire Brigade Chairman Glen Bell said Mrs Tapper’s dedication to the Rural Fire Service extended beyond the Dayboro area. “Lee is a very competent operational fire-fighter plus a Volunteer Community Educator (VCE) for the Rural Fire Service in the Brisbane region,” Mr Bell said. “She will turn up at agricultural shows, fetes, retirement villages – you name it – to spread the word about rural and urban fire safety.” Mrs Tapper said she the loved volunteering for the community “in the company of friends”. “I’ve just met the most amazing, down to earth, honest, caring people and you’re constantly absorbing everything that they have to offer, and their knowledge and dedication becomes quite contagious,” she explains. “Out in the community you meet lots of other people... who all dedicate so much time in ensuring that our communities are kept at the safest level that we can possibly achieve. “You never stop learning and with me you can never stop giving, because it’s what you believe in.”

Tapper the top firie

Gobsmacked” is how Lee Tapper describes being named Queensland’s top volunteer fire-fighter. The Dayboro resident was presented with the Rural Fire Service Volunteer of the Year award in December for exemplary service with the organisation. Selected from around 35,000 volunteer fire-fighters, she was shocked and “a bit confused” when notified of her award win. “It came out of left field and just blew me right out of my little place,” Mrs Tapper said. Mrs Tapper joined Ocean View Rural Fire Brigade 14 years ago before shifting to the Dayboro brigade, where she is currently the group’s secretary.

any people like to root for the underdog, and one little Aussie battler has captured the hearts of thousands of animal lovers. Dumbledore the miniature foal is likely the biggest thing to come out of Yugar. A Facebook page dedicated to him, with fans including Totally Wild’s Ranger Stacey and people in South Africa, Mexico and Kenya, recently reached 10,000 ‘likes’. The pony has appeared on television and rubbed shoulders with Dr Harry Cooper and Wally Lewis. A recently issued Dumbledore calendar has found homes as far away as Austria, Britain and the USA. “I never envisaged that it would end up being as big as it is,” says Dumbledore’s owner, Nikki Bignell. Nikki created the Dumbledore Facebook page “simply to keep me awake” while she bottle-fed the pony “every hour around the clock” after he was born nine weeks premature and rejected by his mother. At birth last February, Dumbledore had no plasma, a low white blood cell count and he needed splints on his front legs while his kneecaps formed. He suffered

from colic, seizures, bowel obstruction and required daily treatment from vets. “I just think people feel for that battler in him. I think it’s the fact that he really shouldn’t be alive and he’s just kept going,” Nikki said of Dumbledore’s popularity. Dumbledore is now featured in a 2015 calendar, with the money from sales to help offset extensive vet bills that already stand at around $15,000. “I was getting requests from people for photos of him and because his vet bills are ridiculously high, I figured it (a calendar)

might be a way to recoup some of his vet bills,” Nikki said. A recent visit to Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital has fuelled Nikki’s desire for Dumbledore to become a therapy horse at aged care homes and hospitals, “to help boost the morale of the patients”. “He’s such a good little pony because he’s so used to being around people,” Nikki said. If anyone knows how to overcome sickness despite the odds and bring joy to others, it’s this cheeky equine.

LNP seeks re-election Continued from page 3

The Greens: Michael Berkman

I

’m a Ferny Grove local. My wife and I have settled here for the long term and really want our kids to grow up in a vibrant, safe and sustainable community. I work as a public interest environmental lawyer at a community legal centre based in West End. I’ve recently worked primarily on litigation to protect our Great Barrier Reef and address the environmental impacts of the State’s resource sector on our precious farmland. I’ve also worked in the Queensland Public Service and private legal practice which, along with my work in the community sector and legal training, has given me a good understanding of the workings of government and business. I have the necessary skills and am eager to play an active role in government if elected, but I’m certainly not a career politician. A lot of Queenslanders are clearly not prepared to put up with another term of LNP Government – we’ve seen too much poor decision-making in the interests of a few, not the broader public interest. We know that the planned privatisation of our electricity assets will just lead to further increases in power prices. Meanwhile, the LNP is unwilling to pay households a single cent for the electricity generated on our rooftops, which we know is taking pressure off the power grid. We all know Queensland is an amazing place to live, but we deserve a better government. It’s important this election to remember that you don’t have to vote for one of the major parties to bring about change. A vote for the Greens supports a party with integrity and a vision for a fair, sustainable future. It also sends a clear message that you won’t tolerate a government that serves a narrow set of interests. The Greens will continue to fight for real action on climate change and support the industries of the future.

Aidan Norrie – The Greens candidate for Everton

“We need better access to public transport and cyclist infrastructure. We need sustainable growth that will lead to long-term jobs and a justice system that makes people feel safe.

John Marshall – The candidate for Pine Rivers

Greens

“I want to put our community first – not big business with ties to the major parties. I want integrity in politics – not policies led by the highest bidder.

Mr Taverner said he would make a good representative because he is already actively involved in the community as a member of the local chamber of commerce and regular participates in charity events. Dianne Gittins, who is running as an Independent in the same electorate, said her freedom from the dominant parties means she is able to view every policy in an “unencumbered atmosphere. “Recent times have seen so much taken from the arts, education and disability programs in Queensland, she said. “With the assistance of the Ferny Grove community, I plan to restore the balance and secure an inclusive and creative Queensland for all. Thor Prohaska, who is running as an Independent in Pine Rivers, said he would not get bogged down in politics, approaching each issue with an open mind and ensuring he consults with his electorate before taking a stance. election

Liberal National Party: Tim Mander

I

’ve lived in the Everton area my whole life and I’m passionate about making sure our special part of the world remains the best place in Queensland to live and raise a family. Thanks to the LNP’s strong economic management, locals are seeing real progress in health and education, a stronger economy, better roads and less crime. Albany Creek State High School now have a $7.2 million Performing Arts Complex, eight local schools now have flashing lights to keep kids safer, drivers are benefiting from the resealing of Old Northern Road, commuters now have trains every 15 minutes on the Ferny Grove line and fares have been reduced by five per cent. Sporting clubs have also been big winners, with more than $700,000 delivered for new dressing rooms, floodlights and vouchers to help families pay club fees for their kids. In health, surgery waiting lists have been slashed and the long dental waiting list has been reduced to zero. We have

more ambulances and our nurses have received a 10 per cent pay rise. Everton is also a safer place to live thanks to the LNP’s crackdown on crime. Today, Queensland has 800 more police on the beat and criminal gangs are being driven out of the state. The reported crime rate has plummeted – with robbery down 27 per cent, breakins down 20 per cent and car theft down 19 per cent. But while plenty has been achieved, we still have a long way to go. If Everton and the rest of Queensland goes off track now, the progress we are starting to see will be at risk. If re-elected I will fight to ensure Everton continues to benefit from the LNP’s strong economic management. I’ll be fighting for a major upgrade to relieve congestion at the intersection of Stafford and South Pine Roads, more buses in Albany Creek and better parking and amenities at Bunyaville State Forest. Only voting for the LNP’s strong plan will keep Everton on course for a brighter future.

Voters require proof of identity

V

oters are reminded that proof of identity requirements are in place for the Queensland State Election on Saturday 31 January. Legislation was introduced mid-2014, which requires all Queensland voters to produce a proof of identity document in order to cast an ordinary vote at pre-poll or on polling day. Every elector will be sent a voter information letter in the mail. This voter information letter is a form of acceptable identification and voters are encouraged to bring their letter with them when they go to vote. Other acceptable proof of identity documents include a drivers licence or proof of age card, passport, Medicare or health care card, utility bill such as a rates notice or phone bill, and a bank statement or credit card. Voters who cannot produce an acceptable proof of identity document will still be able to vote by completing a declaration vote.

Dale Shuttleworth – LNP candidate for Ferny Grove

“Whether it’s volunteering at tuckshop duties, sausage sizzles and the Rural Fire Brigade service or lobbying hard for local clubs... I’ve worked hard to make Ferny Grove a better place to live, work and raise a family.

Seath Holswich – LNP candidate for Pine Rivers.

“I choose to live in Pine Rivers, to raise my family here and I have a vested interest in ensuring our community is a great place to live, work and play.”

Calls to abolish stamp duty

election

Australian Labor Party: Mark Furner

T

here is a better way – Mark Furner. For over six months now I have been doorknocking people in the Ferny Grove electorate. During that time the blunt message that I have been hearing from locals is that you have not been treated fairly and you did not get the government you expected. I believe it is time to restore fairness to Ferny Grove. It is time to stop the cuts and to start re-investing in the future of our local area. If elected, Labor will reverse the TAFE course closures and the property sell-offs. We will restore a proper ratio of nurses-to-patients in hospital wards. And we will ensure that essential services such as the rural fire brigade are properly resourced. The people I have spoken to have been very clear on privatisation. I accept that the Labor Party has made mistakes with privatisation in the past but we have listened and will not make that mistake ever again. At present Queensland’s assets deliver good returns to the state budget and employ tens of thousands of Queenslanders in highly specialised jobs that provide essential services. If elected, I will NEVER support placing your Queensland assets into private hands.

The Westerner, Thursday 22 January, 2015

Q Nikki Boyd – Australian Labor Party candidate for Pine Rivers

“I am a person who has always stood up for what I believe in. I won’t be afraid to speak up against decisions that hurt our community.”

ueensland’s peak real estate industry body has called on the state’s political leaders to abolish stamp duty, amongst reforms to promote growth in the residential property sector. Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) CEO Antonia Mercorella said a broad legislative program was needed to create an even stronger local real estate industry. REIQ has called for the abolition of stamp duty on property transactions, reinstatement of first home owner grants for existing housing, and allowing first homebuyers to access their superannuation to purchase property. “Queensland’s residential real estate sector is in recovery mode and it’s important to build on this momentum,” Ms Mercorella said. “Real estate is crucial to the Queensland economy, contributing more than $8 billion towards Queensland’s gross state product and supporting almost 50,000 jobs throughout the state.”

Commons commitment sought

S

Jeff Frew – Australian Labor Party candidate for Everton

“I understand the importance of jobs, education and skills in our local community. The families of Everton need a representative, not a rubber stamp.”

amford Commons, a community project for urban farming, the arts and sustainability education, is seeking a pre-election commitment from the two major political parties in the lead up to the Queensland election. Samford Commons is seeking a pre-election commitment of $2 million, which will match a provisional contribution from Moreton Bay Regional Council. Samford Commons spokesperson Kate vanderVoort said LNP Member for Ferny Grove Dale Shuttleworth has already expressed strong personal support for the project. “The project is a shining example of what the Queensland Plan aims to do so we are very hopeful of a strong commitment from the Member for Ferny Grove…. and Premier Campbell Newman,” she said. Mark Furner, the ALP candidate for Ferny Grove, has also been asked to consider his party’s commitment to Samford Commons.

Albany Creek pair Bailey Roth and Lachlan McLean and Jack Hill, from Ferny Hills, are three of 70 Queensland teenagers who will travel to Turkey to attend the centenary commemorations of Australian troops fighting at Gallipoli. “The ANZACs played a massive part in Australian history and all those values they (Australian troops) showed overseas fighting against other nations is basically what Australia is built around and is the backbone of our nation,” Lachlan said. “It’s going to be quite emotional especially for the families of the people who have fought there.” Two of Jack’s relatives died in conflicts in Europe. “I’m very interested in all the history and I think it’s going to be a fantastic opportunity to commemorate that, especially as I have relatives that have served in those earlier World War I and World War II conflicts,” Jack said. “One was shot down over Berlin in World War II and another one is earmarked as potentially a grave to visit while we’re over there. “He was a soldier in World War I and was killed on the battlefield in France.” The significance of the milestone ANZAC Day is also not lost on Bailey, whose father serves in the Australian Army and Great Great-Grandfather served in WWI. He is extremely grateful that he has been offered the chance to participate in the ‘money can’t buy’ ANZAC Day experience. “They said there’s about 38,000 Australians on the waiting list

Study highlights positive outcomes for donor families

O

rgan and tissue donation can bring comfort to donor family members in their loss of a loved one and enable something positive to come out of tragedy. These are the key findings of a study highlighting families’ experience of organ and tissue donation. The Donor Family Study, commissioned by the Organ and Tissue Authority, surveyed 186 people from 132 families who agreed to or declined a loved one becoming an organ or tissue donor in 2010 and 2011. “The Donor Family Study provides a valuable insight into the family experience of the donation process, from initial donation conversations through to follow-up support given to donor families,” Assistant Minister for Health Fiona Nash said. “Most donor families surveyed (81 per cent) said organ and tissue donation provided an opportunity for something positive to come out of a tragedy. “For 94 per cent of donor family members, the donation process provided them with comfort in their loss of a loved one.” Other key motivating factors for families to agree to organ and tissue donation included the belief that their loved one would have wanted to help others, and to enable someone else to live a better life. The Donor Family Study also found that most donor family

members felt discussions about organ donation were handled sensitively and with compassion, and that they were given sufficient information to make an informed and enduring decision about organ and tissue donation. “Perhaps most importantly, the study reveals that families who had previously discussed organ and tissue donation with their loved one, found the donation decision much easier than those who had never had the discussion,” Minister Nash said. Minister Nash said the Donor Family Study would be conducted every two years from 2014 to ensure the views of donor families are well understood.

She said the results of this and future studies would help ensure that appropriate support continues to be provided to all donor families. “While the study showed overall results on families’ assessment of the quality of care, information and support provided to them in the donation process, I acknowledge that the experience of donor family members is a deeply personal one,” she said. REELTIME with Damian Staveley

arts

Author’s crazy life in candid book

J Still Alice Forgetfulness, words on the tip of your tongue that cannot be articulated; they present an ominous warning of things to come for Alice Howland. A high profile professor of linguistics at Columbia University in New York City, with a loving husband and three intelligent children, Alice’s life is seemingly perfect. Soon after Still Alice’s eerie beginnings, Alice is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Its classification as “familial” means Alice likely inherited the gene from her father, who died some time ago from liver problems related to his alcoholism. It also means there is a 50 per cent chance of Alice’s children carrying the gene. There is a hefty amount of emotional material presented in this film. Julianne Moore, whose talents are on display here in all their nuanced glory, deftly portrays Alice’s rapid deterioration. The film was written and directed by Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland, adapted from the novel by Lisa Genova. The pair does not feel the need to over indulge in just how awful the disease is. It may be argued they took a soft approach to their filmmaking, showing only as much as was needed to instil the relevant emotion in the audience. But they manage to express the effect of the disease on Alice in different ways. In addition to Alice’s actions and behaviour, the effects are explored through means such as through a speech Alice gives to an Alzheimer’s charity function and through conversations with her family. The film is essentially built on the Moore’s performance. One of the more haunting moments is Alice’s attempts to follow an instructional video left by an earlier, more lucid self, on how to end her life. Alec Baldwin, who plays the husband, along with Kate Bosworth, Hunter Parrish and Kristen Stewart as the three children, are perfectly adequate in their roles but are not given as much to work with, despite opportunities for more to have been done. For example, scenes where the children learn whether they carry the Alzheimer’s gene are dealt with via a brisk telephone call, deflating any tension that could otherwise have developed. Stewart is probably the most worthy of a special mention of the four main supporting characters; however, for the most part the audience is left to invent their characters. While the script may let Still Alice down occasionally, Moore’s performance is enough to hold your interest. The emphasis is on change; as the disease takes hold, Alice’s relationships with her work and her family are all slowly impaired. The one constant is Alice’s fight to retain as much as her old self for as long as possible. 7/10

ohn Hickman says his new book is best described as a true life Fawlty Towers – but without Basil. Sex, Lies & Crazy People tells the bittersweet true story of his family’s involvement in a hotel in Kent, England during the 1960s. “It’s a wry and candid take on life in post-war England with lashings of self-deprecation, florid working class turns of phrase and colourful anecdotes,” Hickman explains. After tackling the “serious and controversial” subject matter of his father’s involvement in World War II as a Lancaster bomber pilot in Reluctant Hero, Hickman took a more light-hearted approach for his second novel, Tripping Over. The author from Eagleby, pictured, says Sex, Lies & Crazy People is his first comedy book, a “completely politically incorrect” story of his youth. “I believe comedy is more difficult to write than drama but I take heart from what I call the ‘giggle gauge’,” Hickman explains. “I tell readers to apply the scale when reading my

With one week remaining in the regular season the Bandits, the only side to not make playoffs since the ABL re-formed five years ago, sit in third position in the standings with a 21-21 win-loss record. Ahead of the three-team playoffs series just four wins separate the teams sitting second and fifth on the ladder. Brisbane heads west for a four-game series against defending champions Perth Heat (24-20) this weekend and also has two catch-up games Canberra Cavalry (20-22) to complete the regular season. Bandits first base player David Sutherland said his team, which finished bottom of the ABL standings last summer with an 18-28 record, is desperate to play post-season baseball for the first time. “At the start of the year we spoke about how we were desperate to have a team to make the finals because so far we’re the only team that hasn’t made finals,” he said. “Last year was a tough year and we came last but the guys on the team are getting more experienced and a bit older and they (the Bandits) have done well with the imports they’ve brought in, with American, Japanese and Taiwanese guys. “I definitely think we’ve got a good enough team to come through and make finals… and destiny is still in our own hands.

“We really need to take three (games) off Perth. We’ve battled Perth very hard all season.” The 29-year-old, a Pine Hills Lightning product who spent five years with American Major League organisation the Los Angeles Dodgers, said the Australian Baseball League is “very tough”. “The league every year gets harder and harder with more guys who are playing professional baseball overseas,” Sutherland said. “There’s only a couple of guys like me who don’t play overseas so it takes a little bit to get back into the swing of things.” Another local Bandits team member keen for playoffs baseball is Ryan Battaglia, a former Lightning player who grew up at Albany Creek. Battaglia, who plays in the third tier of US professional baseball with Cleveland Indians minor league team the Carolina Mudcats, said guiding the Bandits to the ABL playoffs would be a career highlight. “Everyone believes that we can do it but it’s not going to be easy though because it (the competition) is so tight,” the 22-year-old catcher said. “If we won it (the league) it would be one of the best things I’ve ever done but I think it would just be good to have a playoff game in Brisbane, because it hasn’t happened in a long time. “It would only make the sport more popular and get more fans in Brissie and that’s what we need to do.”

Clubs score funding

S

everal local sporting clubs have scored funding to help them reach their goals for the upcoming season. State Government grants, awarded through the Get in the Game initiative, has allowed clubs to purchase equipment, conduct membership drives, host skills programs for players, conduct training and mentoring for committee volunteers, provide coach and referee accreditation and develop representative programs for players.

Grant recipients include Pine Rivers netball, Dayboro rugby league, South Pine touch football, North Brisbane water polo, Albany Creek swimming, Pine Rivers PCYC, Arana-Ascot hockey, Pine Rivers inline hockey, Ferny Grove and Pine Rivers bowls and Albany Creek Excelsior football, pictured. Sport Minister Steve Dickson said since the Get in the Game initiative kicked off in 2012 around 67,000 vouchers had been issued “to assist kids who can least afford to participate in sport or recreation.”

Whether your sport of choice is rugby league, Aussie Rules, netball, tennis, hockey, soccer, lawn bowls, BMX, horse riding, tug of war or motor sport, don’t drop the ball and miss out on advertising what your club has to offer local kids and families. Pine Hills hockey players celebrate a grand final win last season.

n upgrade of the South Pine Sports Complex at Brendale is getting closer to kicking off thanks to a funding boost. The State Government has provided a $1 million grant to allow Moreton Bay Regional Council to construct a fullsize, flood-lit Australian football field, multi-sport clubhouse and associated facilities. The project also includes the construction of additional car parking and a new internal road. “Sport and recreation clubs are an important part of the community, providing health and social benefits, so it is important that they have the right facilities for members,” State Member for Pine Rivers Seath Holswich said. “I am thrilled that locals will benefit from this project which will deliver a clubhouse with meeting and office spaces, kitchen and canteen, function room, gymnasium and storage facilities, as well as other facilities to play and exercise.” AFL Queensland Chief Executive Officer Michael Conlan said the new field and amenities would provide a major boost to the sport. “Participation in Australian football continues to grow across Queensland, and I have no doubt this upgrade will encourage even more kids locally to get involved in the sport,” Mr Conlan said “The footy clubs in the area have been crying out for a facility of this kind, and it will really help to ensure those clubs continue to attract members and ensure a viable competition.” Moreton Bay Regional Council has allocated $10.5 million to the project. Funding support is also being provided by AFL Queensland and the Aspley Hornets AFL club.

Dayboro Cowboys junior rugby league players Kade and Kurt Jones enjoy a book co-written by a former NRL star.

indsey Kiliwnik could not have asked for a more thrilling conclusion to her first major ice hockey competition. Her Australian under-18 team lost the first two games of its five-match series against New Zealand in Melbourne in December, but fought back to tie the series two games apiece. Australia then clinched the series with a dramatic 4-3 win in the deciding clash. “It went into overtime and we scored when there was one or two minutes left,” said Kiliwnik, who played right wing. The youngest member of the Australian under-18 side, the 12-year-old faced the toughest challenge of her career to date. And it wasn’t just the fact that Kiliwnik and her small frame was dwarfed by opponents up to six years her senior.

“They use a lot more body contact and they all had harder shots and they were faster at skating,” she said. Australian team coach Tamra Jones said Kiliwnik, who started playing ice hockey at the age of five in her hometown Winnipeg, Canada, was a rising star of the sport. “Lindsey is a talented two-way hockey player who demonstrates significant potential with her development,” Jones said. “She has been identified as a rising star who works hard, listens well (and) is coachable.” After transitioning from Patricks Road State School to Ferny Grove State High School, Kiliwnik will play at a tournament in Canada in February, with her long-term goal to captain a team in the Australian Womens Ice Hockey League.

ften it’s hard for parents of sports mad children to get their kids to drop the ball, come inside the house and read a book. National Rugby League premiership winner and Queensland State of Origin player Scott Prince may have a solution. Prince and David Hartley have written two Deadly D and Justice Jones rugby league themed adventure books about a boy, who transforms into a fully-grown man whenever he gets angry, who attracts the interest of the Brisbane Broncos. Sally-Ann Sellin, whose sons play rugby league for Dayboro, said Deadly D and

Justice Jones were the first books her boys “let me read through without them saying stop, they’d had enough”. “As most mothers of two boys would know it is near impossible to get them inside sitting still reading a book,” she said. “They would much prefer to be outside kicking the footy, riding bikes and getting into mischief.” The Dayboro Cowboys Junior Rugby League sign-on is on 1 February. Children who sign up to play for the Dayboro Cowboys for the 2015 season will receive a copy of Deadly D and Justice Jones: Rising Star signed by Scott Prince.

Chess king checks off another national title

ark Stokes has won the Australian Reserves Chess Championship before, but it was the nature of his latest victory that made his third national title extra special. Seeded 13th for the tournament, for competitors with a chess rating less than 1600, the 57-year-old stormed to the top prize for the country’s best non-professional chess players. Stokes won nine of his 11 games – including the first seven in a row – and drew the other two in the competition, the amateur section of the Australian Chess Championships held in Sydney from 2-11 January. “It’s the first time I’ve been undefeated so it’s a pretty big achievement,” he said. Stokes finished with 10 points for the tournament, noting: “to win it by 2 ½ points was rather remarkable.” Inspired to play chess after watching the classic World Championship match-up between Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky in 1972, Stokes has been competing for almost 40 years and won his first Queensland Reserves Chess Championship as a teenager. “People think you’ve got to think ten moves ahead to play good chess and it’s not true,” Stokes said. “You don’t have to have an incredibly gifted mathematical brain to play chess, you just have to be able to recognise basic patterns
