Solid foundation for the care of selfless helpers Back in June of this year The Westerner featured a story on Joan Wilson-Jones, a local woman who spent five years caring for her sick partner, after he was diagnosed with aggressive and advanced prostate cancer. The experience of being his sole carer left Ms Wilson-Jones emotionally and physically downtrodden. Now she is an avid and passionate supporter of a new charity organisation based at Cedar Creek. More than 2.7 million Australians dedicate their lives to caring for sick or disabled dependents, and The Carers Foundation aims to give the selfless people a relaxing break from the 24/7 grind of carer duties. Cedar Creek must breed compassion. The home of The Carers Foundation is literally down the road from where The Flower Project, a community service which gifted flowers to volunteers and carers, was born. Read more about The Carers Foundation on page 5 and be sure to pick up the 10 December edition of The Westerner to read about how another homegrown enterprise is helping people with autism to gain employment. – Lee Oliver, Editor

Hypnotherapy

GEOFF McKAY Candidate

The Richards Trauma Process for

Development bids face opposition By Lee Oliver

T

wo divisive development applications are being considered by Moreton Bay Regional Council. Material Change of Use proposals have been lodged with council to open a small wedding and function centre at Highvale and a health retreat at Clear Mountain. Public comment on both proposals closed earlier this month. Around 180 submissions in total were received regarding the proposed Highvale development, with 14 residents expressing their opinions about the mooted Clear Mountain project. IB Town Planning’s application for a function facility at the Goat Track at Highvale features a 60-guest wedding venue, 30-guest function space and four accomodation rooms. In her submission to Council, Elizabeth Nowlan noted her concerns that the Goat Track is not suitable for large volumes of traffic, while Andrea Eadie has concerns for wildlife and noise from guests impacting her nearby horse breeding business. Kathryn McHardy, who lives near the site, is concerned about the noise coming

from guests and the loss of her privacy. Targeted at business professionals and entertainment personalities, the planned health retreat at Clear Mountain would service people recovering from stress and gambling addictions and those in postdrug and alcohol detox recovery. Plans to change the large bed and breakfast site at 753 Clear Mountain Road dubbed ‘On Eagles’ Wings’ into a health retreat, which would employ 10 staff, has been met with some opposition. Elizabeth van der Walt submitted that the proposed business was “not in keeping with the character” of area and would “negatively impact the local community”. Neil and Mercedes Tovey fear it could have a negative impact on property values and “the future safety of the suburb”, while V. and J. Reddiex have safety concerns “if patients have a serious relapse”. Moreton Bay Region Councillor Bob Millar (Division 11) said it could be some time before final decisions on the Highvale and Clear Mountain applications are made. “I think it highly unlikely that Council’s Planning Officers will have got very far into processing the applications so a final outcome would be sometime off,” he said.

Sun shines on university project

Moreton Bay councillors Mick Gillam and Mike Charlton inspect plans for an upgrade to Old North Road at Warner.

Wider road for Warner bottleneck Deborah Tuckett, Clear Mountain Deborah is a member of Arana VIEW (Voice, Interests and Education of Women). Why I joined Arana VIEW Club… One of the ladies I play tennis with introduced my daughter and I to VIEW Club. The goals of the club… are to fundraise for The Smith Family, make friends and to help people. What I like most about the club... The friendliness. My daughter and I were made very welcome. My favourite memories of the club… The pantomimes the girls put on at Christmas and the outings that we go on. Some of Arana VIEW’s most satisfying achievements… for me were the 10 Learning For Life students that out club supports. If I could invite any three people to dinner... My friends Julie, Mel and Margot. They have been there for me through thick and thin. I couldn’t ask for better friends. When I was young the job I wanted to do when I grew up… When I was 12 I wanted to be a hairdresser and cosmetician but as I got older life got in the way. At 50 I went to Brisbane School of Hairdressing and am now a hairdresser. Something most people don’t know about me… I am really very shy. In recent years I have worked on projecting a more confident persona. In my spare time I enjoy… playing tennis, reading and movies and lunching with friends and my dog Chelsey. The best things about living where I do… Privacy, natural beauty, close proximity to family, wildlife at the door.

The Arana VIEW Club is hosting a Hawaiian themed Christmas luncheon at Arana Leagues Club on 2 December from 10.30am. Tickets are $24 for a two-course lunch, raffles and live entertainment. Book on 3300 3733 by 30 November.

T

en years after it opened one of the district’s busiest road corridors is set to double in width. A noted peak-hour bottleneck for motorists, Old North Road at Warner will be expanded to four lanes. Moreton Bay Regional Council has awarded a $5.2 million tender for upgrades of the road between South Pine and Kremzow Roads. Councillor Mike Charlton (Division 9) said upgrading the road to four lanes was “a sig-nificant investment in our local road network” that would boost traffic capacity. “It’s an important road upgrade aimed at reducing peak travel times for motorists,” he said. The 1.5km upgrade of Old North Road includes two additional traffic lanes and provisions for designated cycle lanes in both directions. Boulevard style landscaping will feature with a fauna overpass to be constructed to provide a safe crossing for wildlife. Roadworks are expected to start in early-

2016 and be completed by the end of next year. “I’m eager to see work get underway on this important and time saving infrastructure project which has already delivered cost savings for ratepayers through the competitive tender process,” Cr Mick Gillam (Division 8) said. “Work to build the additional lanes is expected to be carried out alongside the existing road to minimise, where possible, any inconvenience to residents, businesses and motorists.” Provisions to upgrade the route to four lanes was part of the original Old North Road project, which opened in April 2006. The $11.8 million link between South Pine and Samsonvale Roads was funded by the former Pine Rivers Shire Council, the Federal Government and Peet, developer of the Warner Lakes residential estate. Previously motorists had to access the expanding Warner area by driving through Brendale or Strathpine.

oreton Bay Regional Council’s $50 million gamble has paid off, with the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) announced as the winning tender for development of the former Petrie paper mill site. Moreton Bay Mayor Allan Sutherland said USC would develop a campus of equal status as its Sippy Downs campus. “There could be no better early Christmas present for the people of our region than today’s exciting announcement,” he said. “The Petrie campus will have a comprehensive offering of courses including law, business, science, engineering and many specialty courses such as mechatronics.” The Mayor issued a rebuke to initial critics of the land purchase. “I make no apologies for this council having a bold vision for our region’s future that helps to deliver the best possible economic and educational outcomes for our people,” he said. According to the council, the Petrie university precinct is expected to cater for up to 10,000 students within the first 10 years, starting from the year 2020. – Damian Staveley

Charity offers care for carers

W

ho cares for the carers? That’s a question Ronnie and Michael Benbow have been asking – and one they hope to provide the answer to. The Benbows have been hosting retreats for carers of dependent people with health issues at their Cedar Creek property for a decade. “We have had carers here that have not had a day away from their own home in 20 years because of their caring responsibilities,” Mrs Benbow said. “We have been funding... carer rejuvenation breaks over the past 11 years privately on a small scale, however the problem is far greater than what we can do on our own.” Launched last week, The Carers Foundation aims to promote the health and wellbeing of Australia’s 2.7 million house-bound carers. “There are many wonderful organisations which support those that are being cared for, but the issues

facing the carers themselves are not being addressed on any comprehensive or widespread scale,” Mrs Benbow explained. “We have identified the need to support these carers... as their own health is a major issue not being recognised, leading to chronic mental and physical illness.” Caring for her terminally ill partner almost destroyed Mt Samson’s Joan Wilson-Jones. “When Philip passed away (from prostate cancer) I weighed 47kg and my own health was destroyed,” she said. “In those four years I didn’t get a break and I got very few – as in single figures – full night’s sleeps.” Ms Wilson-Jones says The Carers Foundation offers carers “what I desperately needed – time out”. “If I could have had one day off in those four years my experience would have been much different.” Learn more and give your support at www.thecarersfoundation.org.

Cedar Creek’s Ronnie and Michael Benbow have established The Carers Foundation, which aims to safeguard the health of carers.

Vehicles including a 2002 Mercedes Benz, a 1996 Ford Laser and a 2012 Mazda 2 were stolen from Hayward Avenue at Cashmere, Mt Mee Road at Dayboro and Grenadier Street at Bray Park. Police close drug operation: Police from the State Crime Command’s Drug and Serious Crime Group have closed a major operation focused on drug traffickers using the internet to advertise and facilitate the distribution of dangerous drugs throughout Brisbane and the Gold Coast. The closure of Operation North Seamonk, which commenced in June, incorporated the recent execution of 21 search warrants in Brisbane and Gold Coast. A total of 27 people were charged with 105 offences including five charges of trafficking dangerous drugs and 35 charges of supplying drugs. Small quantities of drugs including methylamphetamine, MDMA, LSD and cannabis were also seized during the enforcement action. Approximately $1.12m worth of drugs and $10,000 worth of assets and cash has been seized as part of the operation.

Milestone arrest for Crime Stoppers: Crime Stoppers Queensland recently achieved another milestone with the arrest of its 30,000th offender in Queensland. For 25 years, Crime Stoppers has tracked and counted the number of offenders arrested and charged relating to crimes ranging from drug offences and personal safety, to assault and serious crimes. Mr King is the only business owner from the Moreton Bay Region featured in the painting, which promotes Shop Small, an initiative founded by American Express that aims to reconnect consumers with small business. “I think it’s important because without small business then it’s just the big guys who are calling all the shots,” Mr King said. “I find a lot (of customers) comment that they like to support the small independents and also we try to provide a service that reflects that.” Ms McCracken’s image, pictured, was published in The Australian newspaper with the original artwork to be displayed in the office of Federal Minister for Small Business, Kelly O’Dwyer.

Kegan reflects changing area

Brisbane City Council, Mr Scherf said. Mr Scherf also supports Moreton Bay Regional Council’s vision to help establish a new university campus at Petrie. “The new university precinct is a turning point for our region and I’ll make sure that Division 10 residents can get there and back on better public transportation, he said. If elected, Mr Scherf says he would also work with the Mayor and fellow councillors to honour other “modest and realistic commitments, which “help connect us to our region and

help our local businesses ourishâ€?. He also wants to “revitalise and better connectâ€? green spaces with residents. This would include lobbying for the introduction of WiďŹ into parks and to “ensure parks are functionalâ€?, with adequate amenities such as bathrooms, barbeques and playgrounds. Mr Scherf also pledged to revitalise council-funded community events such as the Hills Carnivale at Ferny Hills and to “preserve and protect the character and integrity of our suburbsâ€?, by working with council and residents “to ensure development is sustainable and transparentâ€?. “We need a local councillor who reects the changes we’re seeing in the Hills District. New families are choosing our community to make their home in,â€? he said. “I am standing because I reect the changes we’re seeing in our growing community and I’m the only candidate in the ďŹ eld who understands the challenges in our connected economy.â€?

With residents “concerned about changes to the nature of their communities, if elected Mr Smith would ensure that there is consultation with locals on all issues affecting them. “Many of the residents are worried about losing the identity of their community, he said. “The residents... cry out for consultation on proposed changes, be it new developments, new roadways or changes to iconic areas. “I will consult with the residents and community stakeholders on issues that are important to them to ensure their views are considered in all decisions.

Seeking to replace retiring Division 11 councillor Bob Millar, Mr Smith believes the main issues facing Moreton Bay residents are primarily related to the growth of the area. “The Moreton Bay region has grown considerably over the last few years, and is forecast to experience strong growth for years to come,â€? he said. “Effective transport options, community infrastructure such as playgrounds, libraries and parks, and ensuring our environmental assets are protected are some of the issues the community has discussed with me. “I love the many and varied communities of Division 11, and the region more broadly, and I want to ensure that their interests are represented. “I know that my professional background in ďŹ nance, governance and audit has provided me with a rare set of skills, which are crucial to the successful operation of Australia’s third largest local government.â€? desire to see his neighbourhood “keep up with the rest of our region has inspired Kegan Scherf to run for Moreton Bay Regional Council at next year’s election. The 24-year-old public servant from Arana Hills, pictured, who previously worked for the Australian Medical Association, will stand as a candidate for Division 10, which covers Bunya, the Hills District and Draper. Mr Scherf believes the residents of Division 10 want their district to be better connected with the rest of the Moreton Bay Region. If elected, he would aim to deliver better public transport “so that residents can better access the rest of our region. “New families ought to be able to live, study and work in our region without having to rely on the amenities of

Samsonvale man hopes voters share his view that his rural area needs governance from a rural resident who understands locals’ concerns. Paul Smith, pictured, is running as an independent candidate for Division 11, the Moreton Bay Region’s second largest divisional area, at next year’s local government elections. He said the “diverse and very large division, which includes Samford and Dayboro, accounts for 30 per cent of the Moreton Bay Regional Council. “I believe that only people who live in these rural communities can understand their unique challenges and needs, Mr Smith explains. “Many in the rural parts of Division 11 have expressed to me their concern that they may lose representation in council if their councillor is not rural at heart.

Winning entries will be chosen simply by how well they show ‘Christmas at my place’. Artwork must have the same dimensions as The Westerner. Angus Murray from Albany Creek State High School was a winner of the National History Challenge.

History beckons for Angus

H

is sister won the last two years and now Angus Murray has been recognised as one of Australia’s top history students. The 14-year-old was recently named a national winner of the National History Challenge, continuing a run of academic success not only in his household but also for Albany Creek State High School. A first-time entrant from Eatons Hill, Angus won for his category of the history competition, about Sir Robert Menzies. He completed a 2000-word research essay on Australia’s longest serving Prime Minister, the country’s leader for 18 collective years between 1939 and 1966. The essay outlines Menzies’ legacy as one of Australia’s most successful Prime Ministers, establishing a successful education system, creating a strong economy and relaxing immigration restrictions. It also reflected on some criticisms of

Menzies, including his role in nuclear testing in South Australia in the 1950s. “I didn’t really know a lot about that topic and that time period, so I found it interesting to gather information,” Angus said. “I think I ended up going about 500 words over the word limit because there’s plenty of information.” Angus, whose sister Leah won the National History Challenge in 2013 and 2014, cites Menzies’ “love for education” as one of the enduring hallmarks of his leadership. Angus, who will travel to Canberra for a gathering of National History Challenge winners, believes it is important to study history because, “If we don’t learn from the past we will never move forward”. Albany Creek State High School has now had a dozen National History Challenge national winners since 2002.

O

ne of Samford State School’s longest serving teachers has taught her final class. Kerry Deacon is set to retire after 22 years at the school and 30 years as an educator. “I think most teachers and students would remember me for my love of the arts – visual art, drama and music,” she said. “When you teach what you love, you pass on that love for that subject to your students.”

www.thewesterner.com.au

Mrs Deacon said the best thing about being a school teacher was interacting with students, from whom she learnt “many of my lessons of life”. “While I was able to pass on to many of them a love for learning, particularly for the arts, I also received the gift of trust and respect from them,” she said. “It was a great privilege to be a teacher.” Mrs Deacon, who also worked at Deception Bay and Dakabin schools during her teaching career, said she would not miss writing students’ report cards.

arts

School teacher branches out

The Program Millions of fans, millions of dollars, one big lie. By now everybody knows some version of the Lance Armstrong story. Stephen Frears, director of the Oscar-winning The Queen, attempts to fill in the blanks with The Program. The film introduces Armstrong as a young cyclist who soon comes to know that he is just not good enough to ever win a Tour de France. Even his attempts to seek out the leading doping expert and enthusiast Michele Ferrari (Guillaume Canet) fail, as the sports doctor tells Armstrong his physique is inhibitive to natural greatness. After a cancer fight, Armstrong’s body is emaciated, allowing Ferrari to shape it to his liking while providing a strict regime of performance enhancing drugs. For Armstrong’s entire career, Ferrari enabled the disgraced legend to avoid capture and rise to the top of international sport, supported by his doping teammates. Ben Foster’s performance as Armstrong is powerful and at times gripping. He captures the sheer creepiness of the man, who convinces himself he is doing the right thing in a sociopathic fashion. David Walsh (Chris O’Dowd) is the wily journalist who sniffs a rat and unapologetically pursues his story, eventually writing the book on which the film takes its inspiration. There are a number of other supporting characters, notably cyclist Floyd Landis (Jesse Plemons), who eventually brings Armstrong’s world crashing down around him, but they are not given much consideration. Dustin Hoffman makes a brief cameo, but his role is too small for it to be satisfying. The film’s focus is the cat and mouse chase between Armstrong and Walsh. The personal lives of both are largely left out of the film. There is a brief scene where Armstrong is seen to marry his now-former wife, but she promptly disappears entirely from sight. While tactful, it also perhaps is representative of the selfishness of Armstrong, who exists alone in his greatness. However, The Program at times feels stilted. Frears uses his artistic licence sparingly, shying away from imagined relationship and family subplots in favour of a presentation of facts that gives the film the feeling of a documentary. It also gives the film license to resort to several tedious and lazy montages to progress the story, which spans Armstrong’s entire career.

Melinda Foord from Armstrong Creek has published her first children’s book.

A

story written by an Armstrong Creek woman more than 15 years ago has finally been published. Melinda Foord has just released her first children’s book, Tree. It tells the story of Frank and his bond with a gum tree that grows in his suburban backyard, his mother and a little brother with a disability. A teacher at Dayboro State School, Foord said the seeds for Tree were planted almost two decades ago. “When my own children were little the tree across the road had to be lopped and it was just so full of wildlife that it took the treeloppers four days to bring it down,” she recalls. “That’s the basis of the story but at its core it’s about the friendship between the little boy and the tree, the love of nature and resilience. “It’s the kind of book that you could read to a little child, because it’s got such amazing illustrations, but it’s also a book that older readers could enjoy because it’s got really good sentence structures and vocabulary. “It’s taken me a long time to have the courage or the time to get it out there and to find someone to illustrate it.” Tree is illustrated by Mt Glorious artist Terri French, with around 30 of her paintings. She said the main challenge of illustrating a book for the first time was “trying to interpret what her (Foord) vision was”. “I did it (painting) in water colour which is new for me as I usually do pencil (work), so that was another step in a new direction for me,” French said. Foord said her “very Queensland story” had already found some readers in Canada, Germany and England. As well as addressing environmental issues, Tree touches on

topics such as single parenting, disability and Aboriginal heritage. “People have said it is so quintessentially Australian… and they were so touched by the emotions expressed between the boy and the tree,” Foord said. “I knew it would engage the kids because my children were just enthralled by this tree… and the animals who lived in it.” The author said her two adult children were “moved to tears” after reading the book, which is dedicated to their late sibling. Tree will be launched with a family market day at Swish Café, 26 William Street, Dayboro on 28 November. Running from 9am to 12pm, the event will feature face painting, balloon animals, book readings by author Melinda Foord, illustrator Terri French doing drawings, and book signings. Copies of Tree, released by In-House Publishing, are available for $19.95 from Swish Café and www.melindafoord.com.

Folk stars aboard for halls tour

S

ome musicians might baulk at the thought of driving hundreds of kilometres to perform in a tiny town with a population of just a couple of hundred people. But not Ash Bell. The singer-guitarist for Mullumbimby folk trio the Starboard Cannons is relishing the chance to play in tiny rural towns such as Nymboida, Felton, Tambo and Goomeri during the Festival of Small Halls tour. Bell explains that townfolk’s “genuine enthusiasm for live music” and “beaut-

iful and cosy atmosphere” of the halls “equate to the ultimate experience for a band playing live”. “Just getting to check out these towns that we’ve mostly never been to and sometimes never even heard of is super cool,” he said. “Getting to meet the locals and share our stuff with them is very special.” Touring with award-winning Canadian singer Irish Mythen, Starboard Cannons will visit the fourth smallest of the 16 towns on the tour, Mt Nebo, next week.

Bell says he has “never heard a voice more strong and true” as Mythen. “When that woman walks on stage, nobody knows what to expect. She is a bold, brash powerhouse of personality. Then she sings,” he said. “Her lyrics are authentic and her stories are legit. One of my favourite things is watching the audience watching her.” Starboard Cannons and Irish Mythen will perform at Mt Nebo Hall on 5 December from 6.30pm. Tickets cost $25 from festivalofsmallhalls.com.

A more focused approach might have allowed for a greater exploration of the emotional toll Armstrong felt. The film seems to gloss over each part of the story that seems most interesting, such as relationship with his wife and the vindication of Walsh. Even witnessing Armstrong’s downfall seems anticlimactic. The Program’s greatest strength is showing the audience the ridiculous lengths each athlete went to, to cheat. But while provoking outrage, it failed to provoke much thought. 6/10

Big names rev up for epic little bike race

S

ome of the district’s top motorcycle talents have described their latest ride as “the strangest race I’ve ever

done”. Former Australian Superbike series racers James Mutton and Ben Attard and rising dirt bike talent Sharni Pinfold were amongst around 200 riders who suited up for a race with a difference this month. The Le Minz Scooterthon saw teams of three or four motorcyclists ride 50cc scooters around a go-kart circuit at Pimpama for 24 hours. A team led by former Moto GP and 500cc World Championship rider Garry McCoy won the race, with three-time Superbike World Championship winner Troy Bayliss and three-time speedway world champion Jason Crump finishing in second position. Mutton, from Samsonvale, partnered with Highvale resident and former USbased road racer Attard to test the speed, handling and endurance of the

environmentally friendly two-wheelers. Mutton said the hardest part of the race, which raised money for motorbike rider safety, was “riding at a fast pace consistently over a two-hour stint” on a scooter that reaches maximum speeds of 80km/hour. “Riding the scooter isn’t hard at all; it’s quite difficult to ride it fast though,” he said. “It’s really important to hold high speed through the corners as they don’t have the acceleration to pick the speed back up down the straights.” Mutton said having the former world champions pushing “really hard for the entire 24 hours” and the limitations of the scooter meant the risk of crashing while “riding at that level of intensity” was high. “At about the third hour of riding my hand actually cramped up from holding the scooter flat out for so long,” he said. “I went to use the brakes but my hand wouldn’t open and I went straight off the

end of the track.” Pinfold agreed that the physical and mental fatigue experienced during the race was challenging. “It surprised me how sore your body actually gets,” said the Everton Hills resident, who works in Samford. “On the scooter you are sitting in a very awkward position trying to be as aerodynamic as possible, trying to get all the speed you can. “It is definitely difficult to ride a scooter in a race simply because they are not made for it. The suspension, the tires, the weight distribution, the lean angle, all of it was hard to try and work with out on track. “I only managed one hour of sleep throughout the night time so trying to keep focused on track was difficult.” Pinfold’s team finished 20th out of 52 entries, while Mutton and Attard’s bike broke down at the 22-hour mark with the team running 14th at the time. – Lee Oliver

Please note: The crossword on this page, which was published in our 29 October edition, is back again… this time with the correct clues.

Name: Zac Hogan Club: Pine Rivers Rapids Baseball Club Team: Senior Pacific League – B Grade Position: Catcher/Short Stop At what age did you start playing baseball? I started with Rapids as an under 8. What is your biggest achievement in baseball to date? Playing at the National Little League Championships for Brisbane North and being named Club Person of the Year for Rapids in 2014/2015 season. Wha is your training programme? I train with the senior team on a Wednesday night. I do two gym nights at our new gym facilities at the club. I help the junior teams to train on a Wednesday afternoon before the seniors train. I umpire my younger brother’s teams on a Saturday and play on a Sunday. What is your favourite/best baseball skill? I love to play catcher. It allows you to see the entire game. Doing pick-offs at second or third bases or a tag-out at home is a great feeling when it comes off. What are the best things about the sport? Baseball is a great game to play; it is fast, it is a game of skill. The ability to throw the ball to a player at speed and accuracy, to be able to guide the ball off the bat into the outfield and then to run the bases at speed to score. There is no better feeling when you make an out or score a run. Attributes needed to be a good baseball player. Patience and commitment but most of all enjoy the game. The best things about my club. Our club is a family club. Everybody knows each other and because my family has been involved for many years it’s where I like to be. Our grounds are fantastic, we have batting cages that we can use, our clubhouse is great and the new gym is amazing. What are your goals for sport? I love playing team sport and being around your mates and playing the game that you enjoy. What advice would you give to people considering playing baseball? Come and watch some games and see how much the players and spectators love the game. Just have a go and come and have a hit. What other sports do you play? I also play AFL for Sandgate Hawks.
