Samford has missed public transport boat When there’s a car accident on Samford Road at Ferny Hills, one of only two major roads leading from Samford to Brisbane, it’s a nightmare for commuters. A lack of public transport options for Samford locals has dictated that the busy road is the goto route for these motorists. Growing up I used to ride my bicycle along the disused railway tracks at Ferny Grove that used to lead to Samford and beyond. A lack of foresight from numerous State Governments failing to predict population growth out at Samford has meant that housing now sits on the former train route – and cars are Samford’s main transport. Trains stopped running to Samford and Dayboro long ago due to lack of patronage. I wonder, would the Samford people of today have used a rail service on their doorstep if one existed now? Congratulations to the cover girl of the 19 February edition of The Westerner, Vanessa Lussini, who has become the first woman to win an Aerospace Australia Award and a $10,000 scholarship. With International Womens Day on 8 March it’s a timely achievement. – Lee Oliver, Editor

The wreckage of a car following a crash on a notorious section of Samford Road last month.
Safety concerns over Samford Road surface By Damian Staveley
T
here are renewed calls to resurface a section of road over the Samford Range following a horror week that saw two serious crashes occur. On 10 February a woman was taken to hospital after her car slid on Samford Road between Camp Mountain and Ferny Hills, bounced off a guard rail and into the path of utility vehicle, tipping it on to its driver’s side. Police, firefighters and ambulance were also called to an accident on 18 February, rescuing a woman encapsulated in her car,
which was lying on its driver’s side following the crash. The woman was taken to hospital with her teenage son, who crawled from the wreckage. After the section of road was resurfaced with Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA), numerous accidents have led to complaints about the surface being too slippery in wet weather. Two reviews were conducted in 2005 and 2007 on the suitability of SMA in certain locations. They concluded there were no systemic safety issues with the surface.

Elsie
Elsie is almost 15-years-old and is a cattle cross kelpie dog. She came to live with us at eight weeks of age and was a rescue puppy. Elsie and her best mate Joe are inseparable. They love to hang out at the back door and their most favourite time of day is helping out feeding the horses. Elsie is very kind and loving. One day she rescued ducklings that fell in the pool and couldn’t get out. She dived in and carried them in her mouth and put them on the side for their mother to gather up. She loves swimming in the dam and running around the paddocks. We are very lucky to have been chosen to be her family and we would thoroughly recommend that if you are looking for a loving pet, go to the RSPCA, where you will be sure to find your best mate, wagging his or her tail, just waiting for you.

Safety concerns over Samford Road surface Continued from Page 3
Karen Fuller, Albany Creek
Karen is organising an International Women’s Day Luncheon this weekend and is a member of the Zonta Club of Pine Rivers, part of an international service organisation formed in 1919, which supports women and girls at local and international levels.
What inspired me to become involved in the Zonta Club of Pine Rivers… Just over nine years ago I went along to one of Zonta’s annual breast cushion days and saw all the good work being done by these women. I knew I could make a difference of a local level. What I like most about the Zonta organisation... I love the fact that it’s an organisation that is dedicated to women and girls. Zonta, on an international level, addresses issues that I am proud to be a part of. Some of our group’s most satisfying achievements… We developed and fund a program called ‘Raves’ that is a selfprotection program that is aimed at high school students. I also love the breast cushion and birthing kit assembly days, because I can be a part of something that is bigger than me. What does International Women’s Day mean to you? International Women’s Day is a celebration of our achievements over the year. It is a great way of sharing our vision and bringing women together. If I were Prime Minister some changes I would make for the betterment of women in society... Equality for ALL. The best piece of advice I have been given… “You can do anything… because you are a Reid” – Gary Reid. If I could invite any three people to dinner... Glenn Close, Ellen DeGeneres and Ricky Gervais. Something most people don’t know about me…. I love to sing. The actor who would play me in a movie about my life… My sister says Joan Cusack but I don’t see it (the resemblance).
The Zonta Club of Pine Rivers’ International Women’s Day Luncheon is on at Portabella restaurant at Albany Creek on 8 March. Tickets are sold out.
This has not quelled the fears of some residents who use Samford Road to travel between Samford and Ferny Grove. A firefighter who attended the recent crashes believes the Ferny Hills side of the road over the Samford Range needs to be “torn up and replaced.” “You only need to spit on it and it becomes as slippery,” they said. In 2008, Dayboro resident Lisa Marshall had her car written off after water sheeting across the road caused her to lose control of the vehicle as she rounded a corner. “As I came around the corner the car just skidded. I had nothing. No steering, no brakes, no acceleration and there was nothing that I did and there was nothing that I could do that would change what was happening with the vehicle,” she said. “The car just flipped and rolled and I don’t remember much after that because I was knocked out. I woke up upside down hanging in my seat belt. “I think it (the road) is dangerous. I think someone’s going to get killed there.” Jason McGarry, who has lived in Samford for nearly 20 years, believes if the road was
How The Westerner reported on the road surface between Camp Mountain and Ferny Hills back in 2005.
resurfaced with normal bitumen there would not be as many problems. “It just seems like every time we get a shower of rain it becomes quite dangerous
and slippery,” Mr McGarry said. Mark Mussig compared Stone Mastic Asphalt road surfaces to running “cheap, nasty tyres on your car”. Newly elected State Member for Ferny Grove, Mark Furner, said he has made contact with the Department of Transport and Main Roads manager for the area to raise the issue with them. “Over the past years there’s been various attempts to address this issue, with doing what I’d probably refer to as cosmetic sorts of programs with the surface of the road coming down the range,” Mr Furner said. “I drive down the range every day, both mornings and evenings, so I quite often see the result of vehicles that have come to grief and it is quite alarming to see that. “If the extent of the accidents are to the level that I’m hearing, naturally there needs to be some course taken to ensure we don’t end up with a situation where we’re having lives lost as a result of unsafe roads.” Moreton Bay Region Councillor Bob Millar (Division 11) has also been in contact with the Department of Transport and Main Roads regarding the issue but noted Samford Road was under the control of the State Government.

Samford’s night to remember
T
he mouth-watering food will knock you off your feet and the infectious music will get you back up again. That’s what organisers have planned for guests of a special black-tie/cocktail fundraiser being held at Samford Village. Proceeds from the A Night to Remember event on 21 March will support the Samford Riding for the Disabled (RDA) group and the Samford Farmers Hall Association. Event organiser and Highvale resident Vanessa Chadwick is promising a night of fine food, wine, music and great company. Cocktails and premium Champagne will be served with canapés by Dalton’s Hospitality, recently voted Brisbane’s best provedore in the Australian Good Food and Travel Guide reader’s choice awards. The company is run by Samsonvale’s Jerome Dalton, whose talents in the kitchen has seen him work in restaurants in England, Spain and South Africa. A strong advocate for utilising local produce, Mr Dalton sources fruit and vegetables from independent stores in Samford and also grows food at his property at Samsonvale. He said supporting the community, from organisations supporting the homeless and people in need to the Brisbane Paralympic Football Program, was an
important aspect of his business. A Night to Remember will also feature entertainment from one of Brisbane’s premier party bands, Hot Sauce, and the Electric 80s Show, featuring the biggest and best hits of the 1980s, from Cyndi Lauper and Eurythmics, to Van Halen. The black-tie fundraiser will be held in the century-old Samford Farmers Hall, which hosts everything from martial arts classes to public meetings. “The hall needs electrical upgrades, floorboards need replacing and that all costs money, and also the upkeep of horses (by Samford RDA) is expensive,” Ms Chadwick said. “The RDA has wonderful patrons but they always need more buildings and better facilities.” The fundraising evening will also feature auctions for prizes ranging from stays in luxury accommodation, dinner vouchers and Gold Class cinema tickets, to horse riding lessons and personal training sessions. The A Night to Remember black-tie party is on at the Samford Farmers Hall, Main Street, Samford Village on 21 March from 7pm to midnight. Tickets are $150 per person. POLICE BEAT Drug investigation, Clear Mountain: Police are continuing their investigations following an incident at Clear Mountain on 18 February. Around 3.30pm police attended a residence on Clear Mountain Road in relation to an unrelated matter, where police allege they found more than 140 cannabis plants and a quantity of cannabis. Police also allege a 35-year-old Clear Mountain man absconded from the scene but was located by police and taken into custody a short time later. Armed robbery charges, Bray Park: A 34-year-old Strathpine man has appeared in the Pine Rivers Magistrates Court following the alleged armed robbery of a service station in Bray Park on 18 February. Police allege that around 11pm a man entered a service station on Kensington Way armed with a gun and demanded money from the male shop attendant. It is further alleged he fled the scene on foot with a sum of cash to a residence on Sovereign Avenue, where a stand-off ensued after threats were made towards police. The man, who voluntarily surrendered to police, was charged with one count each of armed robbery and entering a premises with intent to commit an indictable offence. He was also charged with three counts of fraud and one count each of burglary, unlawful use of a motor vehicle and possessing tainted property, charges unrelated to the armed robbery.
Rescue of boy from floodwaters, Eatons Hill: Police continue to stress the danger of playing in floodwaters after a teenager was rescued from the South Pine River on 21 February. Around 7pm police were called to the river between the Eatons Hill and Bunya shorelines following reports that a boy had been swept down the river. Police and other emergency services attended the scene where a 15year-old boy was found holding on to a tree in knee depth, rapidly flowing water unable to make his way back to the shoreline. A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Swift Water Rescue crew attended and reached the boy in an inflatable rescue boat. He was treated by ambulance officers at the scene. Break and enters, Pine Rivers: Amongst 41 break and enters reported to police during the two weeks ending 27 February were incidents at Glover Road, Armstrong Creek, Crystal Court, Ocean View and St Helen Crescent, Warner.

Canine war hero honoured at Warner
A
park dedicated to a decorated fourlegged Australian war hero has been opened at Warner. Sarbi, a former Australian Special Forces explosives detection dog, made a special appearance to open the $1 million park named in her honour on Saturday. A bronze statue of Sarbi was unveiled in Sarbi Park at Swan Parade, part of a new Defence Housing Australia master planned community named Warner Lakes The Reserve. Sarbi went missing after a joint Australian, American and Afghan vehicle convoy was ambushed in Afghanistan in September 2008. She spent almost 14 months missing
in action before being rediscovered by an American soldier. The life-size likeness of the army dog was created by Brisbane artists Kathy McLay and Dean Rusling. Working from detailed photographs and videos, McLay crafted an original clay model of Sarbi, which was then used to mould the bronze statue. The delicate bronze firing and finishing process was completed by fellow sculptor Rusling, working out of the Chalkos Fine Arts Foundry at Brendale. Thirty per cent of the 465 housing lots at the Warner Lakes The Reserve, launched last year, have been set aside for Defence Force members and their families.

Her name is Lola...
M
eet Lola the Vamp, Doctor of Burlesque. Since starting her career 13 years ago, Lola Montgomery has gone on to become one of Australia’s premier burlesque performers. Soon after discovering websites of burlesque performers while doing an internet search for corsetry, she jetted off to America to audition for a major show called Tease-o-Rama in San Francisco. “When I first saw it in San Francisco… it challenged notions of proper female behaviour while being very glamorous, and that fascinated me,” Lola recalls. So enamoured by her art, she became the first burlesque performer in theatrical history to perform burlesque as part of university PhD studies, awarded to her through Griffith University two years ago. “It incorporated the making and presentation of my creative product with theory, philosophy and a little history,” Lola said.
Highvale’s Lola Montgomery, who goes under the stage name Lola the Vamp, is an international burlesque performer. Photo by Kahlia Litzow.
“It was, by nature, an examination of the form from the perspective of a participant, so it was quite singular in that it allowed me to research not only history, but my creative influences such as ballet, mask and art nouveau.” Described as having “the figure of Brigitte Bardot and the smile of Vivien Leigh”, in 2006 the Highvale resident became the first Australian burlesque dancer to perform at Miss Exotic World, an annual showcase event of the Burlesque Hall of Fame in Las Vegas. She has also headlined the Australian Burlesque Festival and performed alongside Australian music icon Nick Cave. “When I joined (the burlesque scene) there was a larger focus on recreating the form, as it had slipped out of the culture for a while. Now people are more interested in their own interpretation of burlesque,” Lola said. “I think it has become popular again because it’s self-devised and gives the performer a lot of scope to express creative vision.” Lola the Vamp is currently presenting her new show The Poor Slob and the Good Fairy at the Adelaide Fringe Festival.
Important information about low-flying helicopters in your area
Powerlink Queensland’s electricity transmission network transports power from where it is generated to the distribution networks owned by Energex, Ergon Energy and Essential Energy. Annual inspections of Powerlink’s electricity transmission network are important for safety and maintenance reasons. As a part of these annual checks, helicopter patrols will take place in your area throughout the year. During the aerial inspections, the helicopter will fly at a low level along our transmission lines. In some instances the helicopter will pause momentarily for closer inspection. We aim to be as quick and non-disruptive as possible, but there is the potential for some noise during the inspection. Low-flying helicopters also have the potential to startle some livestock. If you have a Powerlink easement on or near your property and would like to register your details to receive more information about upcoming helicopter patrols in your area, or to ensure your details are up to date, please contact us on FREECALL 1800 635 369 (during business hours).
Thank you for your understanding and patience while this important work is undertaken. 8

group of nine parents will shave their heads at Skateaway Albany Creek on 18 March in honour of the deputy principal of their children’s primary school. Albany Hills State School Deputy Principal Steve Wiedman, who is fighting a form of blood cancer called multiple myeloma, is proud of the school community having raised well over $12,000 to help him and others like him through their World’s Greatest Shave initiative. “I don’t know if honour’s the right word but they think that highly of me that they would do someone in my name,” Mr Wiedman said. “Ultimately it’s not going to be just me that benefits from it (the World’s Greatest Shave fundraising), it’s going to be potentially thousands of people across the country who will benefit from it.” Mr Wiedman, who has had six months of chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant, said the Albany Hills school community had previously rallied to raise over $10,000 in honour of a Prep student with leukaemia. “It’s not until you are a patient yourself... that you actually realise how important something like this is,” he said. “Without research you don’t find a cure and what I’ve got isn’t curable yet, but I hope and pray that in 10 years or 15 years time there is a cure.” The Leukaemia Foundation’s major fundraiser, the World’s Greatest Shave on 12–15 March is also an opportunity for Queenslanders to help normalise baldness, one of the distressing side-effects of cancer treatment. W
ith an exposĂŠ on sugar in food set to hit Australian cinemas, nutrition expert Dr Helen Vidgen is reminding parents that raising healthy children starts with their school lunchbox. Opening on 19 March, That Sugar Film is Damon Gameau’s one-man journey to document the effects of a high sugar diet on a healthy body, by consuming only foods that are commonly perceived as ‘healthy’. Dr Vidgen, from QUT’s School of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences, says it is easy to be misled by items promoted as healthy lunchbox snacks, such as muesli bars, cheese dip and biscuit snack packs, juices, flavoured yoghurts and fruit straps. “Very few snack foods marketed to children as lunchbox fillers are core foods. This means they don’t help children to grow and develop well,â€? Dr Vidgen said, adding more than one-third of Australian children eat junk food. “Lunchboxes should be full of core foods such as vegetables, fruits, grains, reduced fat dairy and lean protein foods. Children can be fussy but parents can be creative to get around that. If a child doesn’t like one food in a particular group, swap it for another.â€?

Cottage charm at Kobble Creek
A
former pineapple farm at Kobble Creek now houses a number of charming dwellings. Just under 21.3 hectares of completely private land with an absolute north facing aspect of sloping land was purchased by the current owner in 1990. Originally pineapples covered 20 acres but a vision was seen to clear the land and completely revegetate the site by planting native flora and fauna, whilst making the land accessable for two-wheel drive vehicles. Earthworks started, lava rocks from Gayndah were positioned to the engineer’s specifications and building commenced on the main colonial homestead, which today encompasses spectacular northerly views of the Mt Mee ranges. Given the owner’s passion for building practical sustainable homes, a vision was seen to build a second dwelling to

accommodate guests and family just a few metres from the colonial homestead. Venturing to the top of the block on Pringles Road, many an hour has been spent watching storms roll in. In 2003, the owner built another selfcontained dwelling also with spectacular views, and plans were made to build a Bed and Breakfast with six more dwellings, but only four have been built. Being a corner block, the western boundary of the property skirts Kobble Creek and the south-western boundary incorporates beautiful water holes. To date this has been an enjoyable life experience for the current owner, but now they are leaving an opportunity for imagining the future of the property for the next owner. Comic delivers funny rebuttal By Lee Oliver
M
Fifty Shades of Grey In the late 1980s and early 1990s a string of soft-core pornos with major stars came out of Hollywood: Fatal Attraction, Indecent Proposal, Basic Instinct etc. The sub-genre fizzled out after the disaster of Showgirls but I’ve always had a soft spot for big budget sleaze fests. The only thing worse than E.L James’ alleged “novel” Fifty Shades of Grey and its cannibalisation of the English language was its undeserved popularity. It’s success meant a film version was inevitable and I was keen to see it. I thought that the novel, while complete garbage, still had potential to be turned into a decent sex thriller. The Fifty Shades of Grey movie is about a woman who falls in with a sexual sadist and begins to enjoy his abuse. The plot is identical to 9 ½ Weeks, a forgotten gem from the 1980s with Mickey Rourke and Kim Basinger – so identical I’m amazed there hasn’t been a lawsuit. A lot of women are going berserk about this movie being sexist or indulging in what’s basically a female rape fantasy, but they’re missing the real reason to be annoyed with the film: it’s not erotic and it’s boring as hell. A film like this could be good if it was directed by someone who wanted to explore these themes and make it a disturbing exploration of human sexuality. The movie is about characters entranced by sexual fetishes that no normal person has, and they like it and are disturbed by the fact that they like it. That’s interesting, that has potential to go places, but this film isn’t interested in any of this. It’s as if, because the filmmakers know it’s going to be a smash hit, there is no need to try. Think back to Indecent Proposal: a woman is offered a million dollars by a billionaire to have sex with him. She and her husband are broke, they take up the offer and expect to disconnect from it, but the marriage disintegrates. That film was full of sex but it had something in the background which made it more exciting and interesting. You could discuss the film and talk about the ultimatums within it. What about Disclosure? Michael Douglas is sexually assaulted by Demi Moore, but no one believes he is the victim because he’s a man. The concept flipped the sexual harassment stereotype on its head by making the woman the aggressor. What an original and challenging idea. Fifty Shades of Grey gives you absolutely nothing to talk about. The acting is uniformly terrible. Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan read their lines with the same kind of plasticity you can remember from the Twilight films. What about the sex scenes? When it comes down to it, they’re so sleek, glossy and plastic that they look like a moving Ikea catalogue. I’ve seen more eroticism in a Bonds commercial. Fifty Shades of Grey is an absolute waste of time. 2/10
el Buttle once lived an idyllic, hassle-free life at rural Cedar Creek. Then she moved to the city – and things started to annoy the award-winning comedian. “I think as I’m getting older my patience is getting shorter and shorter so this show is (about) things that have annoyed me this year,” Buttle explains. “It’s about me clashing up against adulthood a little bit and finding it frustrating. That’s the main thrust of the show.” While the 32-year-old is usually the “fall guy” in her own jokes – “I make fun of myself first and then I will take on others”, she says – the focus of her comedy has shifted for her new show, Up to Pussy’s Bow. “I used to try and not be too negative on stage and try to be a bit positive but now I just don’t care anymore,” Buttle says. “Now I want to say, ‘These things annoyed me and whether you agree or disagree it doesn’t matter, I’m going to say them anyway.’ It’s kind of a ‘getting things off my chest show’, which I have never done before and which I’m looking forward to. “The general public can hear all my innermost thoughts on getting buses and things like that, and they can pay for the privilege. It’s free therapy for me, which is great.”
Homegrown stand-up comic Mel Buttle is bringing her new show Up to Pussy’s Bow to the Brisbane Comedy Festival.
Up to Pussy’s Bow is Buttle’s comedic recap of “recent events in my life”, with hipster cafés, parking inspectors, the perils of public transport and more in her sights. “How I come up with my shows is I just live my life and hope with fingers crossed that interesting things will happen to me that I can turn into jokes,” she explains. Buttle, who has won awards at the Sydney Fringe and Melbourne Comedy Festivals and has been likened to Judith Lucy and Kitty Flanagan, will perform Up to Pussy’s Bow at the Brisbane Comedy Festival. Other top Australian comedians such as Wil Anderson, Dave Thornton, Hannah Gadsby, Tom Gleeson, Cal Wilson, Tommy Little and Sam Simmons will also perform at the Brisbane Powerhouse this month. “I like that it (Brisbane Comedy Festival) is all in one venue as it makes it really easy for people to connect with the festival,” Buttle said. “There’s multiple shows in the one spot whereas in Melbourne and Sydney they’re all spread out over town. “The other thing I like about the festival is you have a bit more of a chance of standing out as a middle to fairly new act. A lot of Brisbane comics can get their start there.” Mel Buttle performs at the Brisbane Powerhouse at New Farm from 10-15 March. Tickets are available at www.briscomfest.com
Pioneer’s life story blends fact and fiction
A
slice of Queensland history set in colonial Brisbane has been brought to life by a Closeburn author. Billed as a “thoroughly Australian tale of coming of age, adventure, love and payback”, Turrwan is a fictionalised account of the life of local pioneer Tom Petrie. The Scottish immigrant, after whom Petrie is named, grew up in the harsh Moreton Bay Penal Colony in Brisbane and was one of the first Europeans to settle in the Pine Rivers region in the 1850s. Richard J. Carroll’s new novel, which spans Petrie’s formative years from 1831 to the early-1860s, is based on Tom Petrie’s Reminiscences of Early Queensland. “I didn’t want to do a biography. I wanted to do something… that explored the interaction of fiction and fact,” Carroll said. “There are very few novels set in the convict era and the pioneering era that are set in Brisbane.” A marked departure from Carroll’s last published book – an astrology and meditation guide written in French – Turrwan has its genesis a decade ago. “I came across this book about Tom
Petrie, written by his daughter, and I was fascinated by the characters who seemed to be able make that transition between two cultures,” Carroll said. “There’s so much detail (in the book) it’s just amazing, so many different stories about the Aborigines and their culture. “Petrie arrived here (Brisbane) when was six and it was still a penal colony and there were very few white boys his age and he was drawn to the Aboriginal people.
Richard J. Carroll’s debut novel tells the story of local pioneer Tom Petrie.
“He grew up with them, he learnt their language, he was initiated in the Kippa ceremony… one of the steps on the road to manhood. “To fit in with both (cultures) couldn’t have been easy. I think he had enemies in the white camp and also the black camp.” Turrwan also has a Samford focus with events such as Petrie’s initiation in a ceremony at an Aboriginal bora ring at Camp Mountain a key part of the story. Members of the Indigenous community have given Carroll the thumbs up for Turrwan’s honest depiction of cultural tensions during the colonial era. “There were quite a few massacres. In the book I mention the one at Kilcoy where estimates vary between 40 and 60 Aborigines were poisoned,” Carroll said. “I want people here in Queensland to read that part of history so it’s not just pushed under the table.” Richard J. Carroll will launch Turrwan at Mary Ryan’s Bookstore in Milton on 12 March at 6.30pm. Visit www.richardj carroll.com and win a copy of Turrwan at www.thewesterner.com.au www.thewesterner.com.au

Jasmine Parsons wants to help Brisbane reclaim its under-15 state softball title.
J
asmine Parsons is a quick learner on the softball ground. The Samford Valley resident has only been playing the sport for a couple of years but is already set to contest her third Queensland Championships. At 13 years of age, she is the second youngest member of Brisbane’s top under15 girl’s team that will compete in Mackay in April. Parsons only started playing softball three years ago but was soon wearing the uniforms of the Metropolitan North schoolgirls team and the Brisbane Softball Association representative team. She said lining up for the second-string Brisbane team at last year’s under-15 state titles whet her appetite to be picked in more representative sides. “Last year I got to travel to Toowoomba and it was a really great experience to be able to play higher (level) softball,” Parsons said. “It was great to be in a new team and be in the same group as them and having to do everything with them and experience everything you would like you’re in a high level (tournament). “In the future I hope to make higher (teams) like Queensland eventually but at the moment I’m more focussed on playing good in the next tournament (in Mackay). “I didn’t even know how to play (softball) the first year, I just got into it through a friend… and now I really love it.” Parsons, who regularly makes 90-minute
round trips for training and games, says she enjoys the added responsibility of playing as a catcher on the softball diamond. “When you’re playing at a high level you have a lot of pressure because you don’t want to miss it (the ball) but other than that I really enjoy it because you’re always doing something,” she said. “Instead of being in the outfield with no balls coming with my position I’m always doing something.” Parsons plays for Bears in the Downey Park competition and has received tips from two of the Sandgate-based club’s Australian Spirit representatives, Janice Blackman and Jodie Bowering. “I’ve watched them play a lot of the time and one of the girls that I played with in under-13s, Janice is her sister,” Parsons said. “She taught me a lot about catching and she would always give me tips on throwing and just general stuff.” Brisbane relinquished its state under-15 crown to Wynnum last year and Parsons said the team’s players, who are training five hours a week before their trip north next month, would be out for revenge. “They have won two of out of the last three (titles) but lost the grand final in a tie-breaker (by a score of 20-17) last year,” Parsons said. “They were really upset about that. Their whole philosophy is ‘we go there to win’ and if they don’t then they’re a bit disappointed.” www.thewesterner.com.au

Phillips heads to Bears’ pack
H
e’s not too fond of the cold weather but Simon Phillips is looking forward to helping develop rugby league in the Midlands region of England. The 31-year-old has moved from Samford to England to captain the Coventry Bears into a bold new era of professionalism. A Mackay product who played for the North Queensland Cowboys in the National Rugby League, he is now gearing up to tackle the nationwide Kingstone Press League 1 competition, two levels below the English Super League. “Obviously the weather is the main difference. I think my first training session was –3 (degrees) and the ground was frozen, which is different,” Phillips said. “The skill level in Australia is probably of a higher standard due to the fact that it’s more of a recognised sport back home where more juniors would play. “The boys (in Coventry’s team) are very young but with so much enthusiasm it makes me feel like I’m 21 again.” While making the finals of the 14-team competition will be “a very big task”, Phillips hopes that enthusiasm and the element of surprise will favour the Bears. “The boys are relatively unknown to the other clubs and players and on the flipside the young guys don’t know anything about our opponents,” the former Queensland Residents representative said. “That might sound strange but it means that our fellas will just go out there and play their hearts out without any
preconceived ideas or expectations.” Coventry Bears head coach Tom Tsang said the club’s decision to sign Phillips, who is earmarked to play lock for the team, was a “no-brainer”. After playing four games for the Cowboys in the NRL in 2002, Phillips went on to tally 134 Queensland Cup appearances with the North Queensland Young Guns and the Wynnum Seagulls. The centre was the Queensland Cup’s top try scorer in 2005, crossing the line 19 times in 20 games for Wynnum. He also made his mark as a defender, setting a Queensland Cup record of 63 tackles in a game in 2007. “He is a hugely experienced campaigner and can play a number of positions so I’m sure he will prove to be a fantastic addition to the squad,” Tsang said. Philips said it was “very exciting and obviously a great honour” to captain the Coventry Bears in its first season as a professional club. “I already feel very connected to the club, players and the hierarchy and I really want the club to cement their spot in the professional ranks,” he said. “As a leader I would think I’m fairly demanding and expect a lot. I can handle mistakes; I can’t handle laziness and lack of attitude.” While the Midlands region around Coventry is “all rugby union and soccer and the league is further north”, Phillips aims to help change that, having already started running

rugby league coaching clinics in local schools. Phillips and his wife Jackie, an Australian age triathlon representative and former proprietor of the Samford pool, moved to Coventry with their two children in December. – Lee Oliver
