Free WRWA Fly-fishing Clinic WESTFIELD — The Westfield River Watershed Association (WRWA) and the Western Mass. Fly Fishermen will offer a free, Introduction to Fly Fishing clinic Saturday, August 24 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The clinic will take place on Route 20 in Huntington, Mass., in the turnout on the Westfield River, across from the Huntington Health Center. Children are welcome with the supervision of an adult at this familyfriendly event. People can drop in throughout the morning and watch a fly tying demonstration as well as practice casting. In addition to fly fishing activities, a biologist will be on hand to net insects from

the river and help participants learn to identify them under microscopes. WRWA encourages people who own a fly rod and want to learn more about using it, to bring it to the clinic. Brian Conz, WRWA president, says a tribute to the late Bill Rose, president of both the watershed and fly-fishing associations, by both groups is being planned for fall. It will honor him and one of his favorite spots on the river. Information can be found as it is available on the WRWA Website www.westfieldriver. org. There will be a portable toilet on site. The clinic will be held rain or shine, barring extremely stormy weather. The Westfield River Watershed Association was

and strawberry crostini, and smoked salmon for appetizers; a vegetarian option or grilled barbecue chicken with vegetable and salad options for dinner; and summer plum upside down cake for dessert. Diners will be seated for dinner next to the garden Dr. Wefing planted in 2007. He used to donate the produce to the Westfield Food Pantry. Today, the garden is maintained by volunteers, including faculty, staff and students. Sponsored by MassLive, The Westfield News, Pennysaver, and Jerome’s Party Plus/Taylor Rental, the event will feature food prepared by Westfield State Dining Executive Chef Mary Reilly, a gold medalist in a 2018 American Culinary Federation-sanctioned culinary competition. She is a frequent guest on WWLP’s Mass Appeal, the former publisher of Edible Pioneer Valley and the co-author of Home Sausage Making (Storey Press, 2017). A portion of the dinner will be prepared out-

side on site and Reilly will be available to meet guests, answer questions, and discuss the food and the importance of using locally-sourced ingredients. The event aligns with the University’s commitment to provide local, sustainable food to its campus community. In 2016, Westfield State launched a self-operating dining services system based on a farm-to-fork model. Today, Westfield State Dining part-

ners with more than 30 local farmers and food producers. Dinner tickets are $60 and must be purchased in advance, as seating is limited and the event has sold out each year. To purchase tickets or view the full menu, visit www. westfieldalumni.org/henrysgarden. For more information or to discuss dietary needs, contact Suzanne Boniface, adjunct professor of communication at 413-478-2652 or sboniface@westfield.ma.edu.

Westfield State University to offer Addiction Counselor Education program WESTFIELD — The College of Graduate and Continuing Education at Westfield State University is accepting applications for the 2019–20 Addiction Counselor Education (ACE) program. Classes will be held on weekends and evenings starting in September and ending in May 2020. The goal of this non-credit certificate program, offered at the University since 1991, is to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and techniques necessary for the successful treatment of individuals and families afflicted by alcoholism and/or other drug addictions. This program has been highly instrumental in the professional development of individuals in the western Massachusetts area whom are either working in or interested in the growing healthcare field of addiction services. To help with this mission, Westfield State University has expanded its ACE program to be offered in a new location in Pittsfield. The program aims to train potential counselors in the Berkshires area with the goal of filling critical positions in treatment facilities that are currently understaffed and unable to fill open positions. Classes for the Berkshires program will begin in March 2020 and conclude in November. Applications for both programs are available online at www.westfield.ma.edu/ace. For more information or to have an application mailed to you, contact Brandon Fredette at bfredette@westfield.ma.edu or 413-572-8033.

2nd Annual Clothesline Fine Art and Craft Show

Littleville PreK openings

AGAWAM — The Agawam Community Artists and Artisans will hold its 2nd Annual Clothesline Fine Art and Craft Show at the Thomas Smith House at 251 North West Street in Feeding Hills on Saturday, September 7 from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm. This event will be in conjunction with the Agawam Historical Association who will also be in attendance that day. Free tours of the “little red house” will be given by the Association members. This home was occupied until the 1950’s without modern conveniences, such as central heating and running water. Also, on Saturday during the show, A. Burris Jenkins will be performing from 11 am to 3 pm. He will entertain with his original jazz adaptations of Bach and several other original jazz pieces. Enjoy a tranquil afternoon strolling the grounds and gardens of the house while listening to soft jazz. Visit with the artists and artisans in the tents and browse the unframed art which will be strung from clotheslines. A very unique concept. The Art and Craft Show and parking on the grounds are free. There is handicapped parking in the front of the parking lot. The show will go on rain or shine. For further information please call or e mail: Ceil Rossi (413) 207-1247 or email tocarefree2@hotmail.com.

When it comes to 21st century multimedia platforms, “hyper local” is a term you hear a lot. It’s not a new idea. In fact, The Westfield News has been providing readers with “hyper local” news coverage of Westfield, Southwick, and the Hilltowns all along. Television, radio and regional newspapers only provide fleeting coverage of local issues you care about. TV stations and big newspaper publishers, after years of cutbacks and mergers, frankly aren’t able to provide in-depth coverage of smaller markets anymore. But, day in and day out, The Westfield News provides consistant coverage of the stories you need to know about, that are important to your city, town, neighborhood and home.
