throughout the morning and watch a fly tying demonstration as well as practice casting. In addition to fly fishing activities, a biologist will be on hand to net insects from the river and help participants learn to identify them under microscopes. WRWA encourages people who own a fly rod and want to learn more about using it, to bring it to the clinic. Brian Conz, WRWA president, says a tribute to the late Bill Rose, president of both the watershed and fly-fishing associations, by both groups is being planned for fall. It will honor him and one of his favorite spots on the river. Information can be found as it is available on the WRWA Website www.westfieldriver.org. There will be a portable toilet on site. The clinic will be held rain or shine, barring extremely stormy weather. Westfield State hosts fourth annual farm-to-table fundraising dinner WESTFIELD — Westfield State University Department of Communication will host a farm-to-table dinner on Sunday, August 25, from 5 to 8 p.m. on the grounds of the Horace Mann Center located at 333 Western Avenue in Westfield. Titled “Dinner at Henry’s Garden,” the event honors the late Dr. Henry Wefing, professor emeritus of communication, who served the University for 30 years. Proceeds will benefit the Henry Wefing Journalism Scholarship, which has been awarded annually since 2016. The menu will feature locally-sourced ingredients. Menu options include roast beef with arugula, wild
mushroom polenta, goat cheese and strawberry crostini, and smoked salmon for appetizers; a vegetarian option or grilled barbecue chicken with vegetable and salad options for dinner; and summer plum upside down cake for dessert. Diners will be seated for dinner next to the garden Dr. Wefing planted in 2007. He used to donate the produce to the Westfield Food Pantry. Today, the garden is maintained by volunteers, including faculty, staff and students. Sponsored by MassLive, The Westfield News, Pennysaver, and Jerome’s Party Plus/Taylor Rental, the event will feature food prepared by Westfield State
Dining Executive Chef Mary Reilly, a gold medalist in a 2018 American Culinary Federation-sanctioned culinary competition. She is a frequent guest on WWLP’s Mass Appeal, the former publisher of Edible Pioneer Valley and the co-author of Home Sausage Making (Storey Press, 2017). A portion of the dinner will be prepared outside on site and Reilly will be available to meet guests, answer questions, and discuss the food and the importance of using locally-sourced ingredients. The event aligns with the University’s commitment to provide local, sustainable food to its campus community. In 2016, Westfield State launched a self-operating

‘Be Aware, Be Prepared!’ Packets Available WESTFIELD —The thought of preparing for disasters or emergencies can be overwhelming. Planning is key! The Medical Reserve Corps of Hampden County has prepared a family records packet to assist in the planning process. The document is extensive but simple to complete. ‘Be Aware, Be Prepared!’ packets are available at the Westfield Senior Center, 45 Noble Street. Once completed, the document should be kept in a clear watertight plastic bag, ready to be taken with you in the event of a disaster if you need to evacuate your home. It is the hope of the Medical Reserve Corps that you will never have to use the ‘Be Aware, Be Prepared!’ document. But hope is not a plan!

Westfield Rotary Food Fest 2019
WESTFIELD — The annual Food Fest sponsored by the Rotary Club of Westfield will return to Elm Street for a fifth year on Friday and Saturday, August 23 and 24, bringing music, food and entertainment downtown. The event will begin on Friday at 5 p.m. and continue until 10 p.m. On Saturday it will start at noon and close at 9 p.m. The Food Fest will feature non-stop entertainment with local bands performing on two stages. New activities this year include a climbing wall provided by the Boy Scout Council of Western Massachusetts and there will be games at the south end of Elm Street after 3 p.m. on Saturday, including “cornhole”. The classic car show will return this year from noon until 3 p.m. on Saturday. Food for the fest will be provided by returning vendors including Janik’s Pierogis, Alo Saigon, Skyline Trading Company, Puks Grill, Moe’s Donuts, Bottega Cucina Tia Food, Angelo’s Fried Dough, Tatter Tots, Moolicious Ice Cream, Pandolfi Kettle Corn, The Boys and Girls Club of Westfield, The Boy Scouts, The Westfield Kiwanis Club, Little George’s and the North Elm Butcher Block. Other vendors will offer a variety of non-food items. The Rotary Club will offer beer and malt beverages from two beverage wagons. This year, the club will stage a complimentary wine tasting on both nights, 6 - 9 p.m., adjacent to the south stage. The 2018 Food Fest brought about 10,000 participants to the city’s downtown for the free event and organizers hope to exceed that number this year. The event would not be possible without the support of the city’s administration and the club’s organizers would like to recognize and thank the workers from the several city departments whose unsung efforts contribute greatly to the success of the Food Fest. Please visit: http://www.westfieldrotary.org for more information about the Food Fest and the Rotary Club of Westfield. For questions, please contact westfieldrotary7890@gmail.com or visit our website, westfieldrotary.org. Stay tuned to updated information by liking us on Facebook.

Ice in August at the Jasper Rand Art Gallery
55th and Final Class of 1964 Reunion
WESTFIELD — Cool off with Ice in August at the Jasper Rand Art Gallery in the Westfield Athenaeum. Artist John Briggs exhibits 50 of his prints and describes them as: “2016 was a winter of many temperature changes and little snow. As the ice around my house in the Granville woods formed and melted and formed again, I found myself spending hours with my cameras foraging for the spirits, creatures and secret beings who took shape in the ice around the edges and surface of my small backyard pond, in the potholes and drainage ditches of the road I run on at the Cobble Mountain Reservoir, and in the creeks of the Granville Forest. Native Americans know that the natural world is alive with spirits who are also the people and their ancestors. Some days I imagined my camera view frame as a window in which I saw—via various angles of reflected light—the Ur structures of reality: fleeting fluid and skeletal forms that lie beneath the skin of our familiar world where such items as ice seem merely commonplace. These curious “ice spirits,” as I call them, taught me many things. They communicated incisively, though exactly what they conveyed remains far more nuanced than any words. Perhaps viewers can grasp something of what they’re saying from the pictures they let me make of them on those winter days.” The Gallery is open all Library hours Monday-Thursday 8:30-8:00 and Friday 8:30-5:00. www. westath.org or 413-568-7833.

WSU to offer Addiction Counselor Education program WESTFIELD — The College of Graduate and Continuing Education at Westfield State University is accepting applications for the 2019–20 Addiction Counselor Education (ACE) program. Classes will be held on weekends and evenings starting in September and ending in May 2020. The goal of this non-credit certificate program, offered at the University since 1991, is to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and techniques necessary for the successful treatment of individuals and families afflicted by alcoholism and/or other drug addictions. This program has been highly instrumental in the professional development of individuals in the western Massachusetts area whom are either working in or interested in the growing healthcare field of addiction services. To help with this mission, Westfield State University has expanded its ACE program to be offered in a new location in Pittsfield. The program aims to train potential counselors in the Berkshires area with the goal of filling critical positions in treatment facilities that are currently understaffed and unable to fill open positions. Classes for the Berkshires program will begin in March 2020 and conclude in November. Applications for both programs are available online at www.westfield.ma.edu/ace. For more information or to have an application mailed to you, contact Brandon Fredette at bfredette@ westfield.ma.edu or 413-572-8033.
