Westfield Cultural Council Call for Members The WCC is currently seeking residents with an interest in supporting diverse cultural events and programming within Westfield to serve on the Council beginning in late 2018. This allvolunteer organization is appointed by the mayor and is funded in part by the Massachusetts Cultural Council. Council members make decisions on awarding annual grants, and take part in promoting the arts and humanities in town. In FY18, the council awarded nearly $20,000 in grants to support communitywide programming in a range of creative fields, spanning the natural sciences to fine arts. A list of past grantees
and guidelines can be found at https://www.mass-culture. org/westfield. The next grant cycle will open in fall 2018, at which time, individuals, nonprofits, unincorporated organizations, public schools, and religious organizations are invited to apply for funds to assist in producing or continuing arts, humanities, or science centered programs that take place within Westfield city limits. Council members will be present at this regular meeting to hold a discussion and answer questions, as well as to hear feedback from the community on what they would like to see funding allocated for. The council takes feedback from the public on a yearly basis to ensure grant money is given to projects that benefit the public good.

What Are the Benefits of Martial Arts for Kids? Martial arts are an ancient method of training your mind, body and spirit to act as one. Martial arts practitioners strive for harmony, but also learn effective and often devastating self-defense techniques. Children who get involved in martial arts reap many benefits in several areas of life. Most martial arts originated in Asia and include karate, kung fu, jiu jitsu, aikido, tae kwon do, judo and muay Thai. Fitness: Fitness is a crucial element to all martial arts classes, especially where children are involved. Warmups with jumping jacks, pushups and stretches are common, and the movements of the martial art itself often challenge your muscles and cardiovascular system. Martial artists are known for being toned, flexible and physically fit, and your child will be no different.

Self Defense: The ability to defend yourself against an assailant is an empowering feeling. Most martial arts use self defense as a cornerstone of the entire program. The precise methods will vary from discipline to discipline, but you can be certain that with regular practice, your child will learn to defend himself in a variety of different ways. Many martial arts schools also teach street-smart techniques to kids to help avoid problems altogether.

Self Discipline: Martial arts help instill mental focus in your child, giving her the ability to concentrate on a task and see it through to its conclusion. Dance Works offers many styles of dance in a positive family friendly atmosphere. While providing a strong technical foundation is important to us, having fun & sharing our love of dance is key to our
studio! This past June, in our annual recital, Dance Works celebrated “30 Years of Love”. And that is who we are! We have a lot of passion for dance and love sharing our knowledge of this beautiful art form with our students. We also have a tremendous amount of passion for our students. We want to help them achieve their goals to become the dancer they desire to be. At Dance Works we have both competitive and recreational classes that are taught by the same staff. And we have a unique system where the teachers alternate classrooms which allow them to teach each student in the studio. We also have large viewing windows so parents can watch the progress of their child at any time. We believe in building a strong foundation for our students. Through the years our dancers have won many awards, scholarships and titles; however, it is their character both on and off the stage that we are most proud of. Over the years many of our dancers have gone on to dance professionally. Some of their credits include; New England Patriot Cheerleader, Legends In Concert, Britney Spears “Piece Of Me” Show, The Voice dancer, Dancing With Stars, in commercials and videos as well. Some of our other students have been on their college dance teams and some think of us when they dance on their wedding day. Dance can give a child so much more than the skills that are learned. Students gain selfconfidence, determination, setting goals, counting on others and being counted on in return and respect. Dance is a place of self-expression and freedom. Many of our students have also made amazing friendships at dance. In a way it becomes a home away from home for many of our students. Our recreational classes are on our website as well as on-line registration. We have both single and combo classes- students in these classes have two performances in the recital but get to use the same costume. If you add hip hop to any other class, hip hop is only $25 per month. New this year we are offering 8 week adult tap sessions. I believe no matter what you are looking to get out of dance, we can provide that for you. Please feel free to contact me, Pam, at 413-568-4756 or message me through our website DanceWorksWestfield.com and I will be happy to help you!

The Many Health Benefits of Dancing Dancing is becoming one of America’s favorite pastimes. There is even National Dance Day, which was started in 2010 to “encourage Americans to embrace dance as a fun and positive way to maintain health and fight obesity.” Dancing provides physical, psychological, and social benefits galore, so put on your dancing shoes and follow along. Better balance, improved mooD: Many studies have found that dancing can improve balance, even in frail elderly people. Some have shown improvements in gait, walking speed, and reaction time, as well as cognitive and fine motor performance. Dance studies have included jazz, ballroom, tango, folk, and a series of slow, low-impact dance movements—though any kind of dancing would likely be beneficial. Interestingly, dancing may help people with Parkinson’s disease, which is characterized by rigid muscles, slowed movement, and impaired balance. Dancing may also be good for your mood. It has been shown to reduce depression, anxiety, and stress and boost self-esteem, body image, coping ability, and overall sense of well-being, with the benefits lasting over time. In one study, it even helped control “emotional eating” in obese women who eat as a response to stress.

If you want an upbeat, calorie-burning style, you can try tap or swing, for example. If you want something more reserved, there is tango. Foxtrot is a good choice for beginners; quickstep for more advanced dancers. If you like your dancing more spicy, why not try salsa or mambo? Want to dance with passion? Flamenco may be your calling. If group dancing appeals to you, there is line and folk dancing. In addition to dance studios that give individual and group lessons, many gyms have dance-fitness classes like Zumba that combine dance and aerobics; some incorporate styles like hip hop, Bollywood, and ballet along with Pilates or other core exercises. You can also Presents... search online for a variety of dance events in your area, sponsored by different dance groups or dance schools. In many cities, for example, you can find nightly salsa social dances, tango “milongas,” and swing “meetups.”

Bottom line: There’s no downside to incorporating dance into your regular physical activity routine, and it could help motivate you to get moving if you find other types of workouts, like treadmill walking or cycling, a little boring. People with medical conditions such as heart disease, Parkinson’s, arthritis, and vision impairment may benefit—after they get their doctor’s okay in some cases. Don’t overlook the social benefits: Dancing is a great way to spend quality time with a partner or meet new people if you don’t have a partner.
