How often should I clean my carpet? WESTFIELD — New carpet is the third most expensive investment you will make in your life. You have shopped everywhere to get just the right color and style. Now that it is in, you know eventually you will have to have it cleaned in order to make this investment worthwhile. One of the most asked questions is “How often should I clean it?” The reasons for cleaning carpet are quite basic. You clean to maintain a healthier environment for yourself and your family or employees. You clean to improve the appearance of the carpet. And you clean to extend the life of the carpet itself Naturally, cleaning is important in all three aspects.

Seldom would anyone invest in a fine automobile and never change the oil or have it tuned. To ignore these basic needs would shorten its life and value. This is true of carpet as well. Fine investments need care on a regular basis, not just when it gets so bad you can’t stand it. Look at the list below of factors that would dictate how often you would clean: 1. What is the type of carpet? 2. What amount of traffic is there? 3. What type of soiling is involved? 4. What is the situation in the home or building to control soil? 5. Are there pets in the area? 6. What appearance level do you want to maintain? 7. What will your budget allow? 8. How often do you vacuum?

How often should I clean my carpet? After you have answered these questions, you may consider some of the following facts. All of us would like to have a carpet that never gets dirty. Unfortunately, all things fall down and ultimately, your carpet will get the brunt of it. Carpet is amazing in the fact that it can hide soil for some time. So even if it doesn’t look bad, it can contribute to a rather unhealthy environment. This is true whether it is in a home or in a business. Cleaning on a regular basis is one of the most important facts. In a home where you have a family of four and one pet, the rule of thumb is that you have the carpet cleaned every 12 to 18 months, and traffic lanes every 6 months. Some have heard that this is over-cleaning and that it would shorten the life of the carpet. However, the opposite is true. When soil is left unchecked, it wears away at the structure
of the fibers and breeds contamination. Professional and periodic cleaning keeps it under control. In a commercial situation, proper maintenance programming is a must to ensure carpet life expectancy and appearance. Here, too often the trimming of the budget means the cutting of the maintenance program. This can spell disaster for a carpet investment. Proper extraction is a necessity to promote longer life. In a home, where deeper pile carpets are chosen, soil can hide and de-luster the the fibers many times without being visible. Vacuuming one or two times a week is important to residential maintenance. Professional hotwater extraction will accomplish the rest of the requirements for making it look good and being healthier. ——— Compliments of Liptak Carpet Cleaning 825 Southampton Rd. Westfield.

Neighborhood Stores Help Shelters WESTFIELD -– Rocky’s Ace Hardware, a familyowned business with 32 neighborhood based stores is proud to announce their partnership with Nutro Pet Foods in joining together with its’ customers to help homeless and abandoned pets. The drive runs now through December 23. Each of the 32 Rocky’s Ace Hardware stores have partnered with an area Humane Society or Shelter to collect food this Holiday Season for the much forgotten and unfortunate animals in our own community.
“The drive has become an annual tradition here at Rocky’s. It’s a fantastic opportunity for concerned individuals to help innocent animals without having to make a separate trip to their area Animal Shelter or Humane Society” said Rocco Falcone, president and CEO. Here is how the program works: Customers make donations of much needed pet food at their local Rocky’s Ace Hardware store, specially marked signs and a collection basket will guide customers to the collection area. The stores, will then in turn collect all donations and drive them to their locally chosen charity. Nutro Pet Foods has partnered with Rocky’s in donating over $1,500 worth

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – “As the harsh winter months settle in, it is important that you think about keeping your pets safe from all of the dangers that the season can present,” states Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) Director Kurt Schwartz. “MEMA offers some tips to help insure your pet’s safety.” Do not leave your pet outdoors when temperatures drop below freezing. Dogs need outdoor exercise, but take care not to keep them outdoors for lengthy periods of time during very cold weather. Pets that are mostly indoors need time to adapt to cold temperatures by building up a thicker coat and toughening their footpads for ice and snow. Short-coated dogs may feel more comfortable wearing a sweater during walks. Dogs and cats are safer indoors during all sorts of extreme weather. Care for your pet’s feet. If your pet walks on salted or chemically treated areas, be sure to wash its paws after your walk. Gently rub the bottom of the feet to remove these irritants as soon as your dog is off the road. Many dogs need boots in cold weather, regardless of their coat length. If your dog frequently lifts up its paws, whines or stops during walks, it may be demonstrating that its feet are uncomfortably cold. Wind-chill is a threat to pets, even those protected by shelters. Outdoor dogs must be protected by a dry, draftfree doghouse that is large enough to allow the dog to both sit and lie down comfortably, but small enough to retain body heat. The floor should be elevated a few inches off the ground and covered with cedar shavings or straw. The entrance of the doghouse should be turned to face away from prevailing winds, and the entrance should be covered with a flap of heavy waterproof fabric or heavy plastic. Pets that spend a greater amount of time outdoors in the winter need more food. Maintaining warmth depletes
energy. Routinely check your pet’s water dish to ensure the water is fresh and not frozen. To prevent your pet’s tongue from freezing to its feeding or drinking bowl, plastic, rather than metal food and water bowls are preferred. Never leave a pet locked inside a car during extremely cold weather. Cars can actually act like a refrigerator, holding in cold air, putting your pet at risk.
Be leery of frozen bodies of water. Always keep your pets on a leash when walking them near suspected frozen bodies of water. The ice may not be sturdy enough to support your pet. If a pet falls through the ice, do not attempt to rescue your pet yourself; call 9-1-1 or go for help. Antifreeze and de-icing chemicals can be hazardous. Many types of antifreeze have a sweet taste that can attract animals. Always store antifreeze out of reach and clean up spills. Antifreeze made with propylene glycol can actually be swallowed in small amounts and not injure pets, wildlife or humans. Warm automobile engines See Pet Safety, Page 7

cheer by discretely blotting the stain. Then, post-party soak the fabric in a powerful chlorine-free and color-safe solution, such as OxiCleantm Versatile Stain Remover and water to remove the stubborn stain. Food residue: Don't panic if you notice gravy dripping down your blouse or cranberries smeared on your holiday table runner. Simply blot away as much of the excess stain as possible, and then post-party, soak clothes and linens overnight in a solution of water and OxiCleantm Versatile Stain Remover powder. The next day, add an extra scoop of OxiClean to your wash to boost detergent for better overall cleaning and whitening. Everyday dirt: Friends and family tend to make frequent appearances during the holidays, which mean extra dirt, mud and snow get tracked inside your house. Easily remove the mess from your carpets and rugs by applying an oxygenatedbased stain fighter solution directly to the affected area. Wait one to five minutes, blot well with a dry towel, rinse with water and then let it dry. Stress less about the mess this season by keeping a tough stain remover on hand. When next year's festivities roll around, you'll be glad you packed away your holiday décor clean and spot-free. Find more stain fighting tips at www.oxiclean.com.

Simple tips for your festive fete While planning your themed gathering, make sure to highlight pairs that evoke the holiday spirit. Try some of these hosting tips to make your pairing party the event of the season: Couples in costume: Encourage couples to dress similarly and in classic holiday fashion. For example, some may show up in matching holiday sweaters or as a famous couple from a holiday movie. Cheese and wine: Nothing goes better together than cheese and wine. Make your spread complete with a variety of fine cheeses and a flavorful wine, such as those from Black Box. One 3-liter box is the equivalent of four bottles. For more information, visit www. blackboxwines.com. Dynamic duets: When planning your playlist, look for holiday standards that feature only duets or duos to highlight your special theme. Must-have mistletoe: Add a kiss of romance and fun to your event with festive mistletoe. Every couple will look forward to seeing this gorgeous greenery perched across your doorway. Don't forget dessert: A holiday party would not be complete without the ultimate combination of holiday sweets: cookies and milk. Set them out just as you did in childhood days and watch as guests dig in to this perfect post-dinner treat.
Mini Steak Skewers with Smoked Paprika Aioli Ingredients Aioli
1/2 cup mayonnaise 2 teaspoons lemon juice 1 teaspoon smoked paprika 1 garlic clove, minced 2 tablespoons olive oil Kosher salt and ground black pepper, to taste Skewers 3/4 pound filet mignon, cut into 3/4-inch squares (should get 30-36) 1/2 small red pepper, cut into 3/4-inch squares (should get 20-22) Kosher salt and ground black pepper, to taste Olive oil, for greasing the pan or grill Preparation To make aioli, mix mayonnaise, lemon juice, paprika, garlic and olive oil in small bowl until well blended. Season to taste with salt and pepper and set aside. This can be done up to 24 hours in advance. To make skewers, thread one piece of steak onto skewer, followed by a pepper, another piece of steak, one more pepper, and one more piece of steak. You should have three squares of beef and 2 pepper squares on each skewer. Repeat until all beef and peppers are used. Season generously with salt and pepper on all sides. Set grill pan over high heat, or preheat grill to medium-high. Rub oil onto surface of pan or grates. Place skewers on pan or grill. If using pan, cook for about 8 minutes for medium steak, turning during cooking so all sides have grill marks. If using grill, cook for 6-8 minutes for medium, keeping lid closed as much as possible, turning throughout, until cooked to your liking. Alternatively, you can broil skewers for 6-8 minutes, turning once halfway through. Serve with aioli on the side for dipping. Serves

Makes 10-12 skewers Notes, Tips & Suggestions Pair with Black Box Red Elegance You'll need 4-inch skewers to make this appetizer. If you can't find them, long toothpicks will be fine, as will larger skewers cut to size. Be sure to soak them for 15-20 minutes before cooking to avoid burning. Because this is holiday time, it's nice to use a higher quality meat like filet mignon, but you can use whatever steak you like.

When it comes to 21st century multimedia platforms, “hyper local” is a term you hear a lot. It’s not a new idea. In fact, The Westfield News has been providing readers with “hyper local” news coverage of Westfield, Southwick, and the Hilltowns all along. Television, radio and regional newspapers only provide fleeting coverage of local issues you care about. TV stations and big newspaper publishers, after years of cutbacks and mergers, frankly aren’t able to provide in-depth coverage of smaller markets anymore. But, day in and day out, The Westfield News provides consistant coverage of the stories you need to know about, that are important to your city, town, neighborhood and home.
