and the Occupational Therapy Department at Springfield College will once again collaborate to offer a limited number of older adults in Westfield a unique home assessment opportunity. Pairs of students determine the level of safety and convenience in the home of their assigned older participant by conducting a home visit and an interview. The students address problem areas and make recommendations in a written report that is reviewed by the class professor, Dr. Joan Simmons. Participants receive a copy of the report so that they can implement any of the recommendations if they choose to do so. This is a wonderful opportunity for older adults with any mobility or sensory limitations to discover how they might function more easily and independently at home. If you would like to participate in this unique program or if you have questions, please call Tina Gorman or Fran Aguda at the Westfield Senior Center, 562-6435.

Don't Buy Another Gift Until You Have Given Yourself The True Gifts of The Season... IVE YOURSELF TIME.

It’s important to remember that you have a right to be upset. Everyone who loves you respects this right so don’t be so hard on yourself. Take as much time “out” as you need.

GNORE OBLIGATIONS.

Don’t feel obligated to do anything you don’t feel up to doing. If you have locked yourself into prior commitments, it’s o.k. to say “no.” Your friends and family will understand, so be sure to give yourself permission to change your mind.

IND FRIENDS TO CONFIDE IN.

Lean on the shoulders of those who love you and let them provide encouragement. Don’t feel bad about unloading your emotions on them. They want to help you. You need only tell them how.

RY NEW TRADITIONS.

There’s nothing wrong with adapting a new set of holiday rituals. Why not incorporate a special ceremony to commemorate the life of your loved one? Or consider honoring another endeared family member with the previous roles of your deceased loved one. Know that it’s o.k. to change the rules.

TOP OVEREXTENDING YOURSELF.

The Hurt You Are Feeling Is A Reflection Of The Love You Shared

Don’t exhaust yourself by preparing extravagant meals or overspending. As you grieve, you of all people deserve to relax. Your family and friends appreciate the time they can spend with you. They don’t need or want you to overextend yourself.

Keepers of tradition: Art and folk heritage in Massachusetts Mass Cultural Council WESTFIELD — In the 1860s, entrepreneurs in Westfield, Massachusetts invented machinery and perfected techniques that dramatically altered the way that whips were made worldwide. The practice of whip making grew rapidly, employing roughly 80% of the workforce through the late 1800’s, earning the community the moniker “The Whip City”. The traditional Westfield whip, sometimes called a buggy whip, features exceptional weight, balance, and action, making them prized by equestrian professionals and dedicated amateurs worldwide. Unlike a braided leather bull whip, a Westfield whip has a center of machined rawhide encased in meticulously fitted strips of rattan and is covered with tough, braided thread. Today, rawhide and rattan have been replaced by fiberglass and nylon. Although the Westfield way of making whips is still done, it is too labor-intensive to be cost effective. This fact motivated Carol Martin to found the Westfield Historic Industries Preservation Project (WHIPP), now a part of Westfield Museum Inc. The museum will feature a permanent working display of making Westfield whips using traditional methods. Martin’s father, Harold J. Martin, learned whip making by apprenticing to a master craftsman in the early 1940s. He went on to become president of Westfield Whip Manufacturing Co. After his

In the event of a game not being completed, that game will not be considered in the final tabulation for that week’s games. The grand prize winner will be selected by a random drawing of all entries better than “The Putz” from throughout the entire 17-week regular season. This contest is merely for entertainment purposes.
