Art Open House The artwork of Christine Soderquist, local artist and former teacher for the Gateway Regional School District, will be on display at the Huntington Public Library during the month of February. An Open House will be held on Saturday, February 3rd from 12-2 P.M. with light refreshments served. Christine’s paintings of realistic flowers and landscapes express her deep appreciation and respect for nature. She uses a number of different mediums including watercolors, pastel pencils, and charcoal. Christine attended Cortland and Potsdam State College in New York state and graduated with a Masters

Degree in Elementary Education with a Minor in Art. As a first grade teacher Christine would incorporate art in her lessons whenever possible to engage all students and create an atmosphere where learning was fun for everyone.

William R. Rooney Scholarships Available for Special Needs Students The Horace Smith Fund has $10,000 scholarships available to graduating high school seniors with special needs. These scholarships are offered to graduating seniors who have been on an Individual Education Plan (IEP) or a 504

Accommodation Plan for a minimum of two years. Applicants must be Hampden County residents, attending public or private secondary schools in Hampden County. Scholarships awards of $10,000 are distributed as $2,500 annually and renewable each year until graduation. Recipients must enroll as full-time students at either a two-year or four-year college. Recipients are selected on a variety of criteria, including academic performance, demonstrated financial need, and extraordinary contribution to their high school and community.

The Horace Smith Fund was established in 1899 by the successful and generous philanthropist named Horace Smith, co-founder of Smith & Wesson, located in Springfield. The William R. Rooney Scholarship is named for the long-time educator and former Executive Secretary of The Horace Smith Fund, who advocated for assistance to special needs students. Completed scholarship applications must be received either electronically or be mailed to The Horace Smith Fund at 1441 Main Street, Springfield, no later than March 1st. The student must identify their application as specifically for the William R. Rooney Scholarship. Applications are available at local high school guidance offices, on-line at www. Environmental Leadership Scholarships for Massachusetts High School Seniors The Henry David Thoreau Foundation awards collegiate scholarships of up to $20K to eight to ten students graduating from public or private high schools in Massachusetts. As Thoreau Scholars, these select high school seniors may enroll in any college and university in the world while they major or minor in an environmentally-related field. Thoreau Scholars have studied a wide variety of environmentally-related areas, including biology, epidemiology, oceanography, international affairs and environmental law. Scholar alumni have formed companies and organizations including the animation company, Oxbow, with clients including WildAmerica and the Center for Food Safety, satellite imagery startup CrowdAI, and the nonprofit energy organization Equitable Origin. Westfield To Elect Delegates To Democratic State Convention Registered Democrats in Westfield will hold a Caucus on Saturday February 3, 2018 in the Cafeteria at South Middle School, 30 West Silver Street, to elect delegates and alternates to the 2018 Massachusetts Democratic State Convention.
