Historic presentation at Storrowtown Eastern States Exposition’s Storrowton Village Museum will present its annual First Person Presentation, "A Fireman of 1899 – His Life and Job,” Friday, January 17 at 7 p.m., in its historic Meetinghouse. William N. “Bill” Moss, of Harvard, Massachusetts, will recount the challenges of 19th century firefighters, both in their personal and professional lives. Experience the journey as Moss, dressed in period costume as a firefighter of more than a century ago, introduces audiences to a typical day’s work in the life of a fireman at the height of the golden years of industry and city growth at the end of the 19th century. Moss is a retired firefighter and frequently conducts lectures at the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy, Dartmouth College, Northeastern University and Old Sturbridge Village. A historian and teacher, Moss has been involved in historical character presentations for more than a decade. He also leads interactive workshops for adults and children. This 45-minute entertaining and educational program for adults and children will be followed by a question and answer period. Admission is $5, children under 6 are admitted free and tickets will be available at the door. Reservations for this event are encouraged but not required. For more information, call the Village at 413-205-5051. Visit www. TheBigE.com for details on all the events at Eastern States Exposition throughout the year as well as the annual Big E. Note: This event is weather permitting. If the weather is questionable, please call the Village for details prior to your departure. Storrowton Village Museum, an educational arm of Eastern States Exposition, presents hands-on school programs and guided tours of its historic buildings throughout the year as well as seasonal 19th century-themed events. It is the site of Storrowton Tavern/Carriage House and Storrowton Village Museum Gift Shop and is a picturesque, popular site for weddings held in its Meetinghouse and Gazebo.

Today with Jay: Top Ten Reality By JAY BERGER After working in the periodicals business for almost 30 years, one might think that I would be tired of newspapers, magazines and books. The truth is that I still am an avid reader. Our son Joe is in a similar business and keeps me supplied with great magazines. Newspapers I subscribe to locally. Books come from bookstores or the library. This is the time of year that all of the “top ten” lists come out. Every magazine, newspaper and TV news announce their pick of the top books, movies, TV shows, best restaurants, pizza joints, etc. Over the New Year’s holiday, I was reading the newspaper. I flipped the page to the entertainment section and lo and behold—there it was! I looked over the lists of top 10 books. I read them over again and again. I muttered to myself, “I haven’t read a single one of these books.” Quickly, I scrambled
for a pair of scissors, clipped out the list and placed it where I would remember to take it with me to the bookstore or library. Kitty came by and noted my clipping. “Is this one of those
‘top ten’ lists?” “Yes,” I replied. “And I haven’t read a single one on that list.” “Oh, honey, don’t you realize that it is only one individual’s opinion. If you were to give him or her a list of your top ten picks, they probably would not have read any of your ten. It’s only one person’s idea.” I was ready with my argument. “Well, good literature rises to the top. There are only so many that will make it to the top. Shouldn’t there be some agreement between our lists?” “No, and here is why: You may be a fan of mysteries, adventure and war books. The other list maker likes science fiction, romance and biography. Will the two lists agree? Absolutely not! Again, I make my point: It’s only one person’s opinion—get over it!” I quietly went back to my reading, convinced that I should at least try some of the list’s suggestions. Then I

turned the page. Another list. This was the top ten movies of 2013. I scanned the list once, then read it again, this time from bottom to top. The results were the same. I had only seen one of the ten movies. How could that be? Good movies are heavily promoted. Where had I been? Again to the scissors. I made a promise to get Netflix on the computer and start to see top ten movies. Then slowly, reality set in. How many times did Kitty and I go to a “first run” cinema this past year? Certainly
not even six. Moreover, if we went to the movies, it was to the neighborhood theatre that showed older films. Movies are entertainment. If I was happy with the films that I saw, there is no reason to jump up and order films that someone else deems “the best”! I guess that it comes down to being happy in my own skin and moving at one’s own pace. Enjoy the books that I like and see the movies that please me. I look forward to a fruitful year of Jay Berger’s choices of books and movies.

Last year we had a successful year as we marched in parades, putting on dinners, clover drives, and helping out families. You say what is the AMVETS? The AMVETS is a Veteran’s Service Organization dedicated to serving our fellow veterans and our communities. For more than 60 years, AMVETS has been a staunch advocate of pro-
viding American’s veterans with the benefits and services they’ve earned through honorable military service. Unlike other Veteran’s Service Organizations who restrict membership to service dates or theaters of operation, membership to AMVETS is open to ALL Honorably Discharged, and to those still serving in any service branch including Reserve and Guard Units, and also Merchant Marines. Check out http:// www.amvets.org/ for more info. You may also contact cbean24@verizon.net to join locally, or to set up a post in your community.

Southampton Lions WESTFIELD The Southampton Lions Club is now holding its meetings on the first and third Mondays of each month at 6:30 p.m. at the Westwood Restaurant in Westfield. This robust group is currently comprised of 36 men and women from Northampton, Easthampton and Southampton, and membership is open to residents 18 and older from any city or town in western Massachusetts. Lions are men and women who volunteer their time to humanitarian causes in their communities by conducting service projects and raising funds to help those in need wherever need exists. Part of a worldwide organization of more than 1.5 million members, the Lions motto is “We Serve.” Lions Clubs across the state donate more than $1 million to Massachusetts Eye Research, but also conduct service activities emphasizing diabetes awareness, education and research, community welfare, improved hearing, and work with those who are physically and mentally impaired. Lions members come from every walk of life, age and persuasion, but all have one thing in common: they enjoy helping others. While the primary function of the Club is charitable, its members often find involvement in Lionism leads to improved networking with others in the community. Any resident interested in joining this local Lions Club is most welcome to come to a meeting as a guest to talk with others about the work of Lionism and get to know the
benefits of becoming a member.

Protecting Your Dreams Renters insurance safeguards families, assets (Family Features) There are many reasons people choose to rent over home ownership. Whether saving up for a dream home, you’re having difficulty affording one or you simply enjoy commitment-free, hassle-free living, renting certainly has its perks. Protecting your assets For many looking to rent a home or apartment, the thought of renters insurance may seem less important with so many other things to think about. Though not all landlords require it, many do, and for good reason. “Though you never hope you have to use it, insurance is so valuable to the protection of your family, your belongings, and, overall, your peace of mind,” said Kathy McDonald, senior vice president at Assurant Specialty Property. “Many returning to the rental market will be pleased with how the insurance industry has evolved, which makes acquiring the best coverage easier than ever.” Advancements in the industry The conveniences brought on by computers, tablets and smartphones have greatly improved the services insurance providers now offer. With easy-to-follow websites, apps and customer service chats, one can check the status of a claim 24 hours a day. Keep a home inventory To evaluate the amount of coverage you need — and assist if you ever need to file a claim — keeping a welldocumented list of your possessions is important. A recent survey conducted by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) stated 59 percent of consumers do not have a proper listing of their posses-

health issues with freshly prepared, nutritionally-balanced meals. At SSHE the calories are counted, portions are controlled, meals are freshly prepared - not frozen or shelf stable - and always include fresh fruits and vegetables. Fat, sodium, sugar, cholesterol and other nutrition factors are taken into consideration in the 1200 and 2000 calorie regular meals, and the 1500 calorie vegetarian meal option. Imagine, the only reason to visit the supermarket is to purchase fat-free milk to accompany the meals. As for cooking skills, they are not required. Items that need to be heated can be done in the microwave, conventional oven or toaster. Delicious, satisfying options
Those looking for a more healthful approach to eating will love the variety of foods the plan offers. For example, how does a meal of spinach Florentine-filled jumbo shells, topped with savory tomato-pesto sauce and cheese, with a baby spinach salad and a wheat breadstick sound for dinner tonight? Or, how about a breakfast of baked French toast with fruit and nut topping, and a fresh vegetable fajita with a side of black beans for lunch? Meals can be ordered online or via a toll free call. They are available for delivery nationwide and in some areas of the country, can be picked up at convenient retail locations. To learn more, visit www.seattlesutton.com or call 1-800-4423438.

(Family Features) Few would argue about the importance of eating a nutritious, balanced diet. Unfortunately, not everyone knows how to do it. In fact, more than half of Americans surveyed by Nestlé and Harris Interactive said they are unaware of MyPlate, the dietary guidelines from the USDA that make up a nutritious diet. What's more, consumers only come close to meeting dietary guidelines a mere seven days out of 365 in a year, according to the NPD Group's National Eating Trends® database. This confusion, along with the idea that a balanced diet shouldn't feel like a chore, led Nestlé to create the Balance Your Plate program. It offers easy solutions to help you create deliciously balanced, perfectly portioned meals that include the foods you love while meeting MyPlate guidelines. Building balanced, nutritious meals has never been simpler with the help of MyPlate (choosemyplate. gov), and the Balance Your Plate program (meals.com/ balance) which helps you quickly assemble high-quality balanced meals using frozen prepared entrees as the center of the plate. Protecting your home from electrical hazards Tips from Home Improvement Expert Tom Kraeutler (Family Features) What comes to mind when considering safety hazards around the home? Do you think of electrical safety, fire prevention and reducing the risk of electrical shock? Often times, our quest for new kitchen cabinets and hardwood floors takes priority, while the projects to increase home safety are put on the back burner. One project, however, that should not be put off is evaluating the electrical safety of your home. "There is no time like the present to take a good look around your home and make the simple, yet necessary changes to eliminate electrical hazards and create an added layer of protection for your home and family," said Tom Kraeutler, home improvement expert and syndicated radio show host of The Money Pit. Kraeutler notes a good start is to take inventory of the outlets around your home. Take notice of any outlets that could benefit from being replaced by an Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter (AFCI), Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCI) or tamper-resistant outlet. AFCI versus GFCI AFCIs and GFCIs sound similar, but what do they mean? While AFCIs provide
protection from arc-faults that may lead to electrical fires, GFCIs help protect homeowners from electrical shock due to ground faults. Arc-fault protection is extremely important as arcfaults are often unseen and can occur anywhere in the home's electrical system, including within walls as well as appliance cords. AFCI receptacles are relatively new to the market and detect arcing electrical faults to help reduce the likelihood of the electrical system being an ignition source of a fire. They are perfect for a remodeling project or new home construction as the latest National Electrical Code® requires AFCI protection in a growing number of locations throughout the home. GFCIs on the other hand are designed to reduce the occurrences of shock or electrocution due to ground faults. Many homeowners are familiar with GFCI devices as they are proven safety products that have saved many lives since their introduction to the market. Install AFCI receptacles in family rooms, dining rooms, living rooms, parlors, libraries, dens, bedrooms, sunrooms, recreation rooms, closets, hallways or similar rooms or areas. Use GFCI receptacles anywhere water may be present, such as kitchens, bathrooms,

garages, basements, porches, pool areas and laundry rooms. Whole house safety Did you know the Electrical Safety Foundation International reports home electrical fires account for an estimated 51,000 fires each year, resulting in nearly 500 deaths, more than 1,400 injuries and $1.3 billion in property damage? Just as alarming, the Foundation reports that nearly seven children are treated daily in hospital emergency rooms for electrical shock or burn injuries caused by tampering with a wall out-

let. Recent technological advances in the AFCI, GFCI and tamper-resistant outlet market have made achieving whole home electrical protection simpler than ever. This is due to the creation of devices capable of providing necessary protection, as well as cost-effective and easier to install options. "AFCI protection was once only available through the home's circuit breaker," Kraeutler explained. "Now, AFCI receptacles are available for a safe alternative for

added home protection." In addition, GFCI options are available in slim design for added space in an electrical box to make installation simpler. They also offer a tamper resistant design for increased safety by blocking access to the contacts by most foreign objects, thereby reducing shock and electrocution incidents. Tips to protect your home from electrical hazards • Keep an eye out for electrical wiring damaged during installation or afterwards through over-stapling; crushing; bending; penetration by screws and nails; and through rodent or insect damage. • Over time, cabling may also degrade further due to exposure to elevated temperatures or humidity, eventually leading to arcing faults and potentially a
fire. • Install AFCI receptacles in family rooms, dining rooms, living rooms, parlors, libraries, dens, bedrooms, sunrooms, recreation rooms, closets, hallways or similar rooms or areas. • Use GFCI receptacles anywhere water may be present, such as kitchens, bathrooms, garages, basements, porches, pool areas and laundry rooms. • For added convenience, try a self-test GFCI that automatically tests itself to confirm that protected power is available. • Consider replacing standard outlets with tamper-resistant outlets which employ an automatic
shutter mechanism designed to protect children attempting to insert foreign objects. • One company, Leviton, offers the industry's first AFCI receptacle, slim GFCI receptacles for easier installation and a wide variety of combination tamper-resistant outlet devices. Visit your local or online retailer for more product details. Check out online resources and videos at www. learnitatleviton.com for do-it-yourself installations of AFCI, GFCI and tamper-resistant outlets in your home.

What is the cause of hot floorboards?
BY TOM AND RAY MAGLIOZZI Dear Tom and Ray: My 2002 Honda Odyssey (96,000 miles) has been a great car, other than having to replace the transmission at 60,000. When we take a road trip, we notice that after about two hours on the highway, the floor of the car just behind the front passenger seat gets hot -- really hot! So hot that it is uncomfortable to keep shod feet on the carpet for more than a few minutes! The underside of the right, middlerow seat gets uncomfortably hot to the touch, too. We took the car in to our regular mechanic, who generally does a good job. He said that everything is fine as long as nothing is glowing under the car when it gets that hot. It's hard to believe that this is not a fire risk! I'm not confident I would be able to see something glow in broad daylight. Do I listen to my mechanic, or do I cave to my safety-freak maternal instincts and take this in to the dealer for what is likely to be an overpriced repair bill, whether or not they fix the problem? What do you think is causing this? Many thanks. -- Beth TOM: It sounds like the heat is coming from a catalytic converter, Beth. There's one right in the spot you describe. RAY: It may be something minor, like a missing heat shield. Or it could be something more significant. But it was lame of your mechanic to send you on your way without bothering to figure out what's wrong. TOM: So you have two problems: A heat problem, and a mechanic problem. If you don't feel that your mechanic is willing to put in the time to figure this out, then find someone else (check the Mechanics Files at cartalk. com for a free list of highly recommended mechanics by ZIP code). Because, of course excessive heat can be a fire hazard.

Downing seeking applicants RAY: There are three possibilities that come to mind. The simplest is that a heat shield has corroded and fallen off. Parts that get very hot, like catalytic converters, are surrounded by shielding material to prevent the heat from igniting something nearby. Like your buttocks. TOM: But heat shields are made of cheap metal, and eventually they fall off, or start making so much rattling noise that people remove them. So first you want to see if your heat shield is intact. RAY: The second possibility is that something's wrong with the engine that's causing your converter to run hot. If your fuel-air mixture is too rich -- due to a cylinder misfire, for instance -- gasoline will get combusted in the converter instead of in the engine. And that can produce a lot of heat -- which you will feel, whether the heat shield is intact or not. TOM: The final possibility is that your converter is plugged up. That's what happens when converters get old. Typically, you'll notice a drop in power because exhaust is unable to leave the engine freely, but you might not notice it. A plugged converter will run hot, and eventually glow. RAY: Whatever it is, though, get it figured out and address it. Or your next letter to us might start out: "My 2002 Honda Odyssey has been a great car, other than
having to replace the transmission at 60,000 and the fouralarm car fire at 97,000!" Good luck, Beth. *** Do you really need that truck if you only make one trip to the lumberyard per year? BOSTON – State Senator Benjamin B. Downing (D – Pittsfield) announced today that the 72nd Citizens' Legislative Seminar (CLS) will be held on Tuesday, March 4th and Wednesday, March 5 from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Massachusetts State House. The CLS is a biannual seminar that aims to better educate the public on the Commonwealth’s legislative process. Established in 1976 through a collaborative effort of the Massachusetts Senate and the University of Massachusetts, this two-day conference features presentations by Senators and staff on aspects of the day-to-day experience of legislators in the Commonwealth. Topics will include the history and process of the Legislature, the parliamentary role of the Clerk of the Senate and the future of the Legislature. The CLS culminates with a simulated legislative hearing and Senate session where participants are invited to use what they have learned and participate as “Senators” in the Senate Chamber in order to have a first-hand experience of the legislative process. Any resident of the Berkshire, Hampshire, Franklin & Hampden District who is interested in participating in the CLS should send their resume to the Senator’s Chief of Staff, Bethann Steiner, at Bethann.Steiner@masenate.gov by Noon on Thursday, January 16, 2014. Senator Downing will nominate participants to attend on a first come, first serve basis. Applicants must be able to attend both days of the program in order to be nominated.

When it comes to 21st century multimedia platforms, “hyper local” is a term you hear a lot. It’s not a new idea. In fact, The Westfield News has been providing readers with “hyper local” news coverage of Westfield, Southwick, and the Hilltowns all along. Television, radio and regional newspapers only provide fleeting coverage of local issues you care about. TV stations and big newspaper publishers, after years of cutbacks and mergers, frankly aren’t able to provide in-depth coverage of smaller markets anymore.
