Watershed Wanderings Through Time and Space: Westfield River Watershed Association, 65 years of service Presented by Bill Rose, Mark Damon, Dr. Aaron Reyes, Dr. Brian Conz, Wednesday, February 13, 2019 6:30 p.m. University Hall Multipurpose Room, Westfield State University. Free and open to the public. A panel of Westfield River Watershed Association (WRWA) members will offer perspectives on the watershed and the association committed to its stewardship. Bill Rose will speak about his experience as an avid local recreational fly fisherman, addressing the type of fishing that takes place in the Westfield river, the changing conditions of the river and

how this affects fishing, and WRWA activities that support recreational fishing such as salmon stocking, fly fishing clinics, and the yearly fish ladder open house. Mark Damon will discuss WRWA activities including river cleanups and the sampling of invertebrates in the river; how the diversity of invertebrates can be used as an indicator of overall ecosystem health; and a principle in riverine ecology called the River Continuum Concept that considers the health of the watershed. Dr. Aaron O. Reyes will describe the geology through which the Westfield River flows and how the geology affects natural water chemistry, followed by a short description of results from a WSU student internship program. Dr. Brian Conz will discuss the development and evolution of the Westfield River terraces, which are found in the Westfield River valley west of the city center. The terraces were cut from deltaic sediments deposited into an arm of glacial Lake Hitchcock some 13,000 years ago. The terraces were documented in the early 1900s by the famous physical geographer William Morris Davis and reveal a great deal about the evolution of our local landscape.

Scholarships awards of $12,000 are distributed as $3,000 annually and renewable each year until graduation. Fellowship awards of $15,000 are distributed as $5,000 annually and renewable for two additional years. Students must maintain at least a B average in college. Five scholarships were also awarded to current college students to assist them in completing their undergraduate degrees. Six fellowships were given to college graduates pursuing graduate degrees, who had graduated from Hampden County high schools. The Horace Smith Fund was established in 1899 by the successful and generous philanthropist named Horace Smith, co-founder of Smith & Wesson, located in Springfield. The scholarships and fellowships are named for Walter S. Barr, a West Springfield businessman, whose widow left the bulk of the family estate to The Horace Smith Fund in 1950. Completed applications

Chicago Total Access performance to benefit Westfield

Chicago tribute band Chicago Total Access (chicagototalaccess.com) will be the featured performer for a unique community event benefitting the Westfield Police Auxiliary 7:30 p.m. on Friday April 12, 2019 at the Westfield Technical Academy upper campus auditorium. The funds generated from this event will go a long way to support of new equipment for the volunteers of the Auxiliary to help keep our community safe during major outdoor events in our city such as parades, our first ever First Night, Concerts on the Green, PumpkinFest and more. This benefit was conceived by Westfield on Weekends president, Jay Pagluica. Chicago Total Access is a music group made up of 10 talented musicians who all grew up listening to American and British pop/rock, jazz, blues, rhythm and blues, Motown, acid rock. They’ve been influenced by music from the 40’s to the 70’s as well as classical music from the ages. There is no other American rock n roll band with horns that has influenced more musicians, is loved by millions of people worldwide, and has become such a deep part of Americana as the band Chicago. Since

1967, through 46 years of sold out concerts, millions of record sales, and legions of cheering fans worldwide Chicago is still going strong in 2013. The members of Chicago Total Access have attempted to recreate a slice of the timeless musical catalog of Chicago as well as stay true to the spirit of the original recordings. We hope you enjoy their efforts! The liner notes of Chicago’s first recording titled “The Chicago Transit Authority” still inspire Total Access band members and they hope you, as well -- “The printed word can never aspire to document a truly musical experience, so if you must call them something, speak of the city where all save one were born; where all of them were schooled and bred, and where all of this incredible music went down barely noticed; call them CHICAGO.” Tickets for the show are available on line at www. purplepass.com, at Rocky’s Ace Hardware in Westfield or by calling 800-316-8559. This is a hi-energy, explosive show band dedicated to covering the band’s catalog that spans over 45 years. The audience will have “total access” to the music of Chicago.

Grandparents & Kin Raising Grandchildren, the Grandfamilies: support groups in Hampshire County You may ask, just what are Grandfamilies? Grandfamilies is the name used to describe families that are created when a relative or friend rises to care for another relative’s children. This happens for a multitude of reasons, with the occurrence on the rise. There are even great grandparents parenting again! Along with the satisfaction of helping and the joy, there are many difficulties that also surface. To help alleviate your difficulties and added stress we offer support groups where you are welcome to come, to learn about resources, to share and be heard. Our groups are relaxed, friendly and supportive. We invite you to join us at any one or all of the groups listed below. If you are unable to attend a group but would like someone to talk to or for more information, call/text the Kinship Care Resource Coordinator at 413-8344073.
