He then explained that a friend of his had just lost his father and wanted to get in touch. J.B wanted to know if I would be a part of the séance. Never having experienced this, I agreed. A few days later, prior to J.B. going off to work, I helped him set up the room. We took the dining room table and put chairs around it. From the recesses of his closet came an enormous, globelike light fixture. This went in the center of the table, close to his candelabra. Ten of his friends came trooping in, accompanied by a woman dressed in what I

would describe as a gypsy costume, complete with a giant, colorful headscarf. We all sat down and J.B. turned off the lights. He lit the candelabra and asked everyone to hold hands and not speak. The woman asked everyone to mention their

Sunday. June 1, 2014 - 11 name. Then she asked the grieving friend to give the name of his father and when he died. She then spoke under her breath and reached toward the globe. “I think I hear your father responding,” she said. The son asked, “What is he saying?” “It’s not clear yet,” was her reply. This went on for several minutes and the woman finally announced that we would have to try again in a few weeks. J.B. asked us all to commiserate with the friend and thank the séance lady. A few weeks later, J.B. and Midnite went off to work. I never saw them again. I called around to hospitals, the police, and his job. Nothing. If I did not see the scene of the séance on TV, I probably would have never thought of that time again. Life is full of memories— most good, some not so good!

Healthy Habits for Raising Healthy Eaters For many parents, getting their children to eat the right foods can be a daily struggle. According to registered dietitian Deanna SegraveDaly, there are many simple ways for parents to get their little ones to eat the foods they need to grow up strong and healthy. Here are a few ideas you can incorporate into your family's routine: Train Tiny Taste Buds Getting young kids to accept new foods can wear down even the most patient parent. It may take 10-15 exposures to a food before a kid accepts it. Encourage trying new fruits and vegetables for just a few bites. "Fast Foods" for Smaller Tummies Younger kids, especially toddlers, seem to be hungry at any time but mealtime. Those small stomachs burn calories fast, so it's natural and healthy for kids to snack between meals. Choose nutrient-rich, balanced snacks that are quick to serve. This can include: A portion or two of sliced of low sodium ham and tomato slices wrapped in a whole wheat tortilla and cut into one inch pinwheels • Libby's Fruit Cups mixed with yogurt or peanut butter • Pita wedges with hummus and avocado • Smoothie made with frozen banana, plain yogurt and chocolate milk • Teaching Coordination at the Table Dinnertime is prime time to build young children's fine motor skills that require control of small hand muscles. Actions like pinching small pieces of food and effectively using a fork and spoon can help with more advanced skills down the line. Have kids practice with small pieces of soft food, like cooked vegetables or fruit - yet another opportunity to expose them to healthy foods. Give Veggies a Good Rap From the Start Are you setting up veggies as the bad guys? Avoid phrases like, "If you finish your peas, you can have dessert."

This sends the message that peas don't taste as good as cookies. Rather, tell kids to take a bite and if they don't like it, they can leave it. Keep serving it at future meals and one day, your child may surprise you. And remember, your kids need to see you enjoying vegetables, too.

Got Picky Eaters? While many young kids aren't fond of certain flavors, some may even be sensitive to particular textures or temperatures. If raw carrots are too rough or crunchy, try a softer version, such as Libby's Diced Carrot cups. If a heated veggie is refused, try serving it at room temperature. Help your kids to connect mealtime with eating colorful fruits and veggies by exposing them to healthy foods at every meal.

Cooking spray For additional healthy, kid2 (8-inch) whole wheat torfriendly meal and snack ideas, visit www.getbacktothetable. tillas, cut into 8 pieces each 1 tablespoon sugar com. 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnaFruit Dip with mon Cinnamon Sugar Dips: Scoops 4 Libby's Diced Peaches Ingredients Fruit Cups, or other Libby's Scoops: Fruit Cups (4 oz. each) 2 tablespoons fruit syrup (strain from Fruit Cup) 1 cup plain nonfat Greek yogurt 2 teaspoons honey 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon Preparation Preheat oven to 400°F. Coat baking sheet with cooking spray. Place tortilla pieces on baking sheet. Coat pieces with more cooking spray. In small bowl, mix together sugar and 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon. Put contents of one Fruit Cup (4 oz.) into individual serving bowls. In mixing bowl, combine fruit syrup, yogurt, honey and 1 teaspoon cinnamon. To assemble each fruit cup dip, spoon 1/4 cup cinnamon yogurt on top of each fruit cup and serve with four cinnamon scoops each. Serves 4 servings

10 easy vegetables to grow in your garden (Family Features) Growing fresh, healthy vegetables at home isn't as hard as it may sound. Novice gardeners just need good dirt, easy plants to grow, lots of sunshine and the right amount of water. Once you've prepared your garden plot, select one or all

of the following vegetables, and then get growing: Lettuce - Plant lettuce seeds directly into the garden or a pot then repeat every two weeks throughout the spring. It can be cut a few weeks after planting. Some harvest lettuce by pulling it up - roots

and all - but cutting a little off the top every few days will keep it growing until summer's heat turns it too bitter. Spinach - This vitaminpacked green is planted and harvested just like lettuce. Cucumbers - Once the danger of frost has passed, make several mounds of dirt near the edge of your garden and place 2-3 plants around the center of each. Cucumbers are notorious for growing vines that overtake other plants. So, be vigilant about keeping them contained. See Garden, Page 15

Squash - Like cucumbers, summer squash is planted on small mounds at the edges of a garden so their vines can be contained. Most varieties, such as yellow squash and zucchini, are quite prolific and just a few plants will feed a large family all summer long. Green Beans - Early in the spring plant green bean seeds directly into the soil. They should be planted in a long row under a tall fence, trellis or other support system. They love to climb. Sow out more seeds every two weeks for a continual harvest through the summer. Tomatoes - Purchase plants from your local garden center, making sure to get those which grow best in your area of the country. All plants should be staked or enclosed in a tomato cage because successful plants produce an abundance of large, heavy fruit throughout the summer months. Radishes - Radish seeds should be planted directly into the soil as early in the spring as possible. Keep planting new rows every two weeks until mid-spring. They grow quickly so should be checked and harvested often. Once summer sets in, radishes become spongy and too hot to eat. So, enjoy early in the season. Bell Pepper - Bell peppers are easiest to grow from plants. Space them about a foot apart and then watch them take off. Little care is required. The only real trick to growing bell peppers is knowing when to harvest. If you're growing red, orange or yellow varieties, they'll start out green then turn color as soon as they ripen. Carrots - Dig a long, shallow trench in soil that is free of rock. Sprinkle the seeds along the row, cover lightly with topsoil and wait for the top of the carrot to pop through the soil. Once a bit of orange appears, pull and enjoy. Beets - Nothing beats a beet for its earthy, sweet taste. They should be planted from seed as soon as the ground can be worked in early spring.

Stuck trunk likely due to busted latch BY TOM AND RAY MAGLIOZZI Dear Tom and Ray: My brother-in-law, who

lives the next state over, has a 2007 Toyota Corolla. His trunk no longer opens. He lives frugally, so it would

really be good if the two of us could find the root cause and fix it. We met halfway between our houses at an icecream shop parking lot, and pried the back seat forward. Then I crawled into the trunk to assess what I could. The key turns, and a wire strut looks like it moves. There is a plastic lever with the image of a car and trunk opening, which I thought would save us. No luck. I pulled it down, but nothing happened or clicked. Something is just not hooked up right, and we don’t know what it is or why. As we were experiencing a heat wave at the time, I did not spend too much more time poking around in the trunk. What do you suggest we do next? -- Eric RAY: I’d wait for winter, Eric. It’s a lot cooler in the trunk that time of year. TOM: Sounds like the latch is broken. You have two mechanisms that are supposed to make the latch disengage (the key, and the emergency release lever inside the trunk). Neither one actuated the latch. So it’s probably the latch itself. RAY: So you should try to unlatch the thing, manually, from the inside. I don’t have a mental map of an ‘07 Corolla trunk latch, but what you want to do is try to flip the latch claw with a screwdriver so it releases its hold on the U-bolt that’s holding the trunk lid closed. TOM: We often have this

problem with hood release latches. They rust out, or the cable breaks or sticks. We get underneath and release the latch with a screwdriver so we can repair the thing. Of course, hood latches are easier to get at from the grille or through the engine compartment, but it’s the same principle. RAY: So you need to get in there with a bright light, and see if you can maneuver the latch mechanism with the right size screwdriver and get it to release. TOM: It’d be helpful if you could see one that works properly first. So next time you see an ‘07 Corolla, ask the driver if he can lock you in his trunk for a while. Bring an oxygen tank. And pack a lunch, in case you’re in there for a while. RAY: If you’re unable to release the latch with a screwdriver, then you have to either try to unbolt the latch from the inside and remove it, or do a “Law and Order” on it.

TOM: That’s a crowbar, Eric. But that’ll damage the trunk lid, and the fascia. RAY: But ultimately, you’ll probably have to remove the latch and either fix or replace it. It’s just easier to do when the trunk is open and you have access to helpful accessories, like light and air. Good luck. *** Used cars can be a great bargain, and reliable, too! Hyper • Local

When it comes to 21st century multimedia platforms, “hyper local” is a term you hear a lot. It’s not a new idea. In fact, The Westfield News has been providing readers with “hyper local” news coverage of Westfield, Southwick, and the Hilltowns all along. Television, radio and regional newspapers only provide fleeting coverage of local issues you care about. TV stations and big newspaper publishers, after years of cutbacks and mergers, frankly aren’t able to provide in-depth coverage of smaller markets anymore. But, day in and day out, The Westfield News provides consistant coverage of the stories you need to know about, that are important to your city, town, neighborhood and home.
