Senior FarmShare provides $125 of fresh vegetables to low-income seniors for only $10 CISA’s Senior FarmShare program offers low-income seniors access to low-cost, fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables at the height of the growing season. The application period for participation is open until June 1st. Eligible seniors can apply to participate at one of thirteen distribution sites throughout the Valley, and participants will be chosen by lottery when the application period closes on June 1st. The program is based on the CSA model: participants receive a “share” of produce, delivered weekly by a local farm for pick-up at a set time. Participants pay a $10 costshare and receive $125 in produce, and the program runs for 10 weeks beginning in July. Eligible seniors must be over the age of 60 and have an

income below $24,280 or a total household income below $32,920. Distribution sites are located in: Athol, Greenfield, Turners Falls, Shelburne Falls, Chesterfield, Huntington, Chicopee, Holyoke, Palmer, and Springfield. To find contact information for each of these sites in order to request an application, visit buylocalfood.org or call Brian Snell at CISA, 413-665-7100. Senior FarmShare is part of CISA’s commitment to making local food available to everyone in our community. Now in its 14th year, Senior FarmShare will distribute over $50,000 in vegetables to 420 seniors in 2018. Funding for the Senior FarmShare program is provided by the MA Executive Office of Elder Affairs, individual contributions, and by grants from church communities.

WGBY Asparagus Festival Kicks Off June 2

Community spirit, environmental sustainability, local economic wellbeing. For all these reason, the WGBY Asparagus Festival celebrates “all things local and agricultural.” This year, the festival (wgby.org/asparagus) returns Saturday, June 2 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the Hadley Town Common with live music, local food and beer vendors, a makers’ and farmers’ market, PBS Kids games and, of course, visits by Curious George. The WGBY Asparagus Festival is free Saturday, June 2 with suggestion donation of $5/person (or $20 per family). It will be held rain or shine. This year, WGBY’s “Rooted in the Valley” stage will feature Latin Grammy Award-winning children’s musician Mister G at 12 noon, followed by three popular Signature Sounds acts: Heather Maloney (2–3 p.m.) — A singer-songwriter merging folk roots with indie rock; Jig Jam (3:30–4:30 p.m.) — A quartet blending the best of traditional Irish music with Bluegrass and Americana in a new genre dubbed “I-Grass” or “CeltGrass”; and Amanda Anne Platt & The Honeycutters (5–6 p.m.) — A traditional, honky-tonk-flavored country/Americana sound. There will be no going thirsty either, with sodas, coffee, and local craft brews. For the more scrutinizing foodie,

WGBY offers a special lunch with gourmet offerings inspired by the crop that made Hadley famous: asparagus. The WGBY Chef’s Spearit Lunch takes place from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. in a private tent at the far end of the Hadley Town Common adjacent to the festival. Among the nearly 100 vendors at the WGBY Asparagus Festival are many familyfriendly activities and educational displays. PBS Kids characters Curious George and The Cat in the Hat will be on hand for meet-n-greets with children. Outdoor games will include the Valley Asparagus Pick and Valley Scramble, an agriculturalthemed spinoff of PBS Kids spelling game Kart Kingdom. Plus, families can watch experts quickly bunch asparagus. With a nod toward environmentalism in agriculture, the WGBY Asparagus Festival will serve its food

To Advertise Call 413-562-4181 kicks off the Sunday Night Concert Series with “The Nite Caps”. The band’s show presents classic country music, from roadside jukejoints playing ballads and foot-stompers, to two-stepping Texas dancehall tunes, as well as western swing from the time when country music was influenced by the uptown sound of the big band era. You will hear music from the songbooks of Hank Williams, Bob Wills & the Texas Playboys, Kitty Wells, Ernest Tubb and whole lot more. From waltzes to fast & slow two-step rhythms, you will find “The Nite Caps” will keep you on the dance floor as long as the night continues. This performance begins at 6:00 p.m. at the Beveridge Pavilion and it is free of charge. Chairs will be provided and a food service will be available. For further information on the Westfield

The 100th Anniversary of any church is a momentous event for its members and St. Peter and St. Casimir parishioners in Westfield are doubly blessed to be celebrating the centennial milestone of two churches. Last fall, the dedication of St. Peter’s Church in 1916 and its Slovak heritage was celebrated with a Rededication Mass and Dinner-Dance on September 10th, 2017. Coming up next month on Sunday, June 3rd, 2018, we will be joining together again to celebrate the 100th year since the dedication of St. Casimir’s Church in Westfield in 1918. All parishioners, friends and families are invited to a Mass of Remembrance of the Dedication of St. Casimir’s Church by people of Lithuanian heritage and will be held at St. Peter and St. Casimir Church at 10:30 am with a procession and picnic to follow. The procession will proceed after Mass to an area outside the church to bless a Hill of Crosses on church grounds. You are welcome to bring a cross to erect on the site if you wish. The Hill of Crosses is a beautiful Lithuanian tradition started back in the 1800’s after Lithuania unsuccessfully rebelled against Russia. Crosses and crucifixes started

to appear on a Lithuanian hill and continues to this day. Over 100,000 crosses have been erected to remember those who have died. The Hill of Crosses has come to signify the peaceful endurance of Lithuanian Catholicism. Pope John Paul II declared the Hill of Crosses a place for hope, peace, love and sacrifice. We hope to develop it more and more with each passing year. The centennial picnic with the serving of ethnic and American foods, music, games for the kids, and raffles will begin at noon at the Sons of Erin outdoor grounds and pavilion at 22 Williams St, Westfield. Tickets must be purchased in advance by calling the rectory at 568-5421. Adult tickets cost $10 and children (ages 5-12) cost $5. Come join us in celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the dedication of St. Casimir’s Church on June 3, 2018 especially if you are of Lithuanian or Slovak descent or once attended these Churches.

Come and enjoy your Lithuanian and Slovak families.
