Talent Auditions SOUTHWICK - Area singers, dancers, musicians, comedians, spoken word artists and magicians are encouraged to let their inner celebrities sparkle at the open auditions for Southwick’s Got Talent on Sunday, March 16. Rabies Clinic WESTFIELD The Westfield Animal Control Department will sponsor a rabies vaccination clinic on Sunday, March 16 from 10 a.m. to noon. Art Workshops WESTFIELD- Westfield Creative Arts will hold Acrylic Painting, a one-day art workshop on Mondays March 17, 24 and April 7 and 21 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Westfield State University Downtown Art Gallery. Exercise Classes WESTFIELD - Exercise classes at the Westfield Senior Center taught by Westfield State University students majoring in Movement Science under the direct supervision of Dr. Melissa Roti will begin in March and run for six sessions. The classes will be held on Thursdays, March 20 and 27, April 3, 10 and 17 and May 1 from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. There is no charge, but sign-ups are necessary because space is limited. This program has been very successful in the past so we are thrilled to have a new group of students to lead the classes again this year. Free parking is available in the Stop & Shop lot or, for no more than three hours, in the Thomas Street Municipal Lot located behind the Bank of America. Westfield Dollars for Scholars Board of Directors announces that students applying for scholarships must file online. Through the new website, http://csfwestfield.dollarsforscholars.org, students will have the ability to create online profiles, which allow them to apply for and be matched to multiple scholarships for the 2014 school year. The student dashboard on the website will give students and their parents one stop shopping for chapter scholarships, educational resources, opportunities and events. We encourage prospective college students to begin developing online profiles now, to assure that you are alerted about scholarship opportunities in advance of deadlines. Scholarship Applications Available WEST SPRINGFIELD The Advertising Club of Western Massachusetts Scholarship Committee announces scholarship applications are now available online at adclubwm.org. Applications will also be available through guidance departments at high schools in Hampden, Hampshire and Franklin Counties or by contacting the Ad Club at 413736-2582. Western Massachusetts seniors who have been accepted by an accredited college or technical school to study advertising, communications, marketing or graphics arts and will be attending in September 2014 are encouraged to apply. Mob Action— Then and Now By JAY BERGER This past week there has been a lot of coverage about the “Blarney Blast” at a couple of off-campus locations near UMass Amherst. The police were involved. Several people were injured; many arrested. Excessive drinking seemed to be part of the problem. It appears that it was a gettogether prior to the St. Patrick’s Day celebration. Nowadays, it does not take much to trigger a celebration—whether on a campus or in a city with a baseball, hockey or football team. We read and see what happens in Europe, South America, and particularly England, when their hometown soccer team wins or loses an important match. These events have their supporters and detractors. The supporters’ theme is one that says, “Young people are in the forefront of change. If they are not happy with the status quo, then by protesting (and even rioting) they get recognition and the political process takes over and things happen.” There was a time on college campuses when the only time one saw an eruption was during the late spring, just before graduation, when the inevitable “panty raid” took place. During my campus days, most of the student body was comprised of veterans who lost three or four years to the military and were seriously working toward their degrees. We didn’t have the time or inclination to celebrate or protest. We might have a beer and a pizza after studies when we had some spare cash. I recall an event several years ago at Springfield College: hundreds of students were protesting (I’m not certain what it was about). They set up tents all over the campus, lived day and night in the tents and didn’t go to class. The president, chancellor and deans made efforts to quell the demonstration—to no avail. Then the president came up with a brilliant idea. He wrote a letter to every parent of the demonstrators saying, “This is a note informing you that your son/daughter is not attending classes and is living in a tent.
Tuition at Springfield College is now [amount], and we thought you might want to know what is happening.” Within 72 hours, parents arrived on campus, the tents disappeared, everyone was back in class and that was the end of the protest. Would something similar to that work at UMass? Perhaps everyone is too sophisticated now. The campus police at UMass were anticipating a problem and had geared up. I suspect that is why the socalled “Barney Blast” took
place at some off-campus housing areas and the Amherst Police had to step in. We will see what punishment will be meted out to the offenders. I’m certain that the administration has pictures of all the action and can identify those taking part. UMass basketball is going to be taking on some big name schools in the NCAA tournament fairly soon. The administration will be gearing up again for what may happen after some of those games take place. Keep reading and watching.
