Celebrate Westfield River’s 25 Years As A Wild And Scenic River With Free Symposium Westfield River’s Wild and Scenic 25th Anniversary Celebration continues this week with a free symposium Saturday, March 24 at Westfield State University. Christopher Curtis will share his stories and photographs of the river in the keynote address. Curtis, recently retired as Chief Planner for the Pioneer Valley Planning Commission, developed the plans designating the Westfield River as the state’s first National Wild and Scenic River and helped secure millions of federal dollars to enhance environmental and recreational use of our local resources. His photography book, Celebrating the Westfield River: 25 Years, chronicles the adventures of our local watershed. Carrie Banks of the Massachusetts Division of Ecological Restoration will also speak about the process of restoring and connecting a Wild and Scenic river. The formal part of the symposium will conclude with a panel discussion of the Wild and Scenic Internship program led by Meredyth Babcock of the Westfield Wild & Scenic River Committee. In the afternoon, local experts will lead a field trip to the Keystone Arches in Chester on the West Branch of the Westfield River. Built in 1840 for the Western Railroad, these are the first keystone arch railroad bridges in America. They are wholly dry laid and range in height to 70 feet. These arches made it possible for Western Mass. to be the site of the longest and highest railroad in the world at that time. Student posters, a large exhibit area featuring local and state groups, and a raffle round out the program of events. The Symposium begins at 8:30 a.m.
