Mention it often and mark the days off the calendar to the big event. Once you arrive, continue your jovial attitude, no matter how long it takes to set up camp and get the fire going. Your kids will pick up on your attitude and get excited, too. Even teens will get in on the fun if everyone else is having a good time. Involvement is key when camping out with kids, especially those who would rather not. Get their help with the planning, keep them in the know and spend as much time as possible with them on the trip. The more your kids feel like they are a part of the trip, the less they will fuss and the more receptive they will be to the idea.

Unbroken and Lou Zamperini A friend urged me to read the Laura Hillenbrand novel, Unbroken. Hillenbrand is the author of the bestseller—and eventual movie—Seabiscuit. I believe that Unbroken is now being made into a movie

produced by Angelina Jolie. Lou Zamperini (the hero of Unbroken) is alive at age 96 and still giving inspirational talks. He was a great athlete, competing in track and field. Lou went to the 1936

Olympics (made famous by Jesse Owens), where he tried unsuccessfully to run the four-minute mile—but was very close at 4 minutes and 3.5 seconds. Lou graduated from the University of Southern California and went into the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was an officer on a B24 bomber and was shot down off Hawaii. He and two other crewmates lived on a raft for almost 30 days and drifted 2,000 miles. A Japanese naval ship picked them up and he was a prisoner for the remainder of the war. Because of his fame, he was given extra beatings, torture, and lack of water and food; but he endured until Hiroshima and Nagasaki were bombed and the war ended. After the war, Lou toured the country and world as a hero. He married and settled down, but became despondent and turned to alcohol and gambling. By the time he hit bottom, Lou was encouraged to go to a Billy Graham revival meeting, and everything changed for the better. Some of the locations where Lou was held in captivity were areas that I visited during service in WWII. The Japanese ship that rescued him dropped him off on Kwajelein Island in the Marshall Islands. The Marshalls were where I trained for the potential invasion of Japan, and Kwajelein was our headquarters. It was a barren island in 1945 with an airstrip and not much else.

Today, it is a thriving tropical paradise. My cousin Joyce and her family were there for many years while her husband worked for a defense contractor. You could play tennis or golf, go swimming, eat great food, go to the movies, or read a book. Lou did not have those luxuries. I did not either, but I wasn’t being beat up or tortured. Eventually, as the war crept toward Japan, Lou ended up on the home island of Honshu, docking at Yokohama. I was in Yokohama, taking munitions and other war material out to sea and dumping them. Lou was moved to several other

locations in Japan until the war ended; these were places that I ended up visiting as part of my military intelligence duties. As a youngster growing up, track and field was more of a major sport than it is today. We all wanted to see the track stars break the fourminute mile. Because Adolph Hitler was sponsoring the 1936 Olympics, we all cheered on the American athletes and Lou Zamperini’s name was on our tongues along with Jesse Owens. I urge you all to pick up a copy of Unbroken, and when the movie comes out, be certain to see it.

Spring Car Care

Spring Ready Tires...

The weather is warmer and it’s time to see how your vehicle survived the winter. Spring is a great time to make those repairs, check those fluid levels and see how the winter has treated your tires. Your tires are something you can check and maintain, even if you aren’t mechanically inclined. The first thing to do is check the pressure. You should do this every couple of weeks and before road trips. If you don’t check your tire pressure on a regular basis, spring is a good time to start. First, you need to determine the recommended PSI (pounds per square inch) for the tire. This can be found on the tire or in the owner’s manual. To check the pressure, you will need a tire gauge. Most pressure gauges you can buy today are digital and easy to read. Unscrew the cap on the tire stem and put on the pressure gauge. If it reads “35 psi,” that means the tire requires 35 pounds of pressure per square inch. If air is needed to reach the recommend PSI, add air to the tire until you reach that number… BUT DON’T OVER INFLATE IT. Under inflated tires have greater friction with the road, which causes your vehicle to work harder. A vehicle that works harder uses more gas and costs more money. Next, check your tires for wear; a worn tire is smooth. Hopefully, your tires are not completely bald. But, if they do still have some tread, is it enough? A way to check wear is to reach into your pocket, take out a penny and place it into the tire’s groove, with Lincoln’s head upside down and 19 College Hwy, South Hadley, MA facing toward you. If you can Village Commons - Across from Mt. Holyoke College see the top of “honest Abe’s” 413-533-FILM or visit: www.towertheaters.com head, it’s time to go shopping for new tires. The way you drive affects your tires. To ensure they last as long as possible, keep these things in mind. Driving at high speeds generates heat and will (PG-13) Digital Presentation reduce the life of the tread. It’s also important to consider Fri-Sun: 1:00, 4:00, 7:00, 9:30 what you encounter on the Mon: 1:00, 4:00, 7:00 road. Avoid going over potTue: 10AM, 1:00, 4:00, 7:00 holes and hitting curbs when Wed: 1:00, 4:00, 7:00 you turn. Also keep an eye out for road kill. They may alThu: 1:00, 4:00, 7:00, 9:30 Clip this coupon out and use it to $AVE ready be flattened, but don’t on all of the parts and accessories run over those unfortunate you need. critters. Another way to extend the (PG-13) Digital Presentation life of your tires is to rotate Fri-Sun: 12:30, 3:30, 6:30, 9:30 them. By rotating your tires, you allow them to wear more Mon: 12:30, 3:30, 6:30 evenly. A good rule of thumb Tue: 9:30AM, 12:30, 3:30, 6:30 is to have them rotated every Wed: 12:30, 3:30, 6:30 6,000 to 8,000 miles.
