The Agawam Public Library is pleased to announce two art exhibits for the month of May. We welcome back local artist Diane Savioli-Chase and her exhibit Cuba: Classic Cars. This is Diane’s 4th photography exhibit at the Agawam Library. Cuba: Classic Cars is a collection of poster-sized photographs taken on trips to Cuba. From personal cars to fancy taxis, the exhibit shows a range of colorful vintage automobiles that are still used as transportation on the island. Since parts of the island are still difficult to access, these cars are increasingly rusting away and Diane seized the opportunity to document them. Diane has been an amateur photographer for 40 years. She specializes in travel photography and in recent years has focused on street photography by documenting the homeless in the Park Street area of Hartford where she works as an ultrasonographer at Hartford Hospital. Diane is also interested in roadside memorials and is particularly fond of ice cream cone signs that she documents throughout her travels and was the subject of her last exhibit at the library. Along with shows at the Agawam Library, Diane has had exhibits at the Chicopee, Westfield, West Springfield, Longmeadow, and Northampton Libraries, as well as the Valley Photo Center (Springfield), The Robert
Floyd Gallery (Southampton) and the Rinova Gallery (Westfield). She especially likes exhibiting at the local libraries as they give the general public an opportunity to view her work. Diane hopes that the exhibit will appeal to a range of viewers from children to vintage car collectors. Please join Diane for a reception on Thursday, May 17 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Gallery area of the library. “Every Child is an Artist” and Smart-Start Pre-School wants to show theirs off! REMEBERING THE WAR TO END ALL WARS: Commemorating the Centennial of WWI WESTFIELD — As the centennial of the end of the First World War approaches, the Westfield Veterans Council will host Remembering the War to End All Wars. The 90-minute program by Small Planet Dancers will be held Saturday, May 19th at 6:30 at Holy Trinity Social Center, located at 335 Elm Street, Westfield. The program will focus on the period leading up to and through World War I with the music, songs, readings, and dances of the era. It will offer some vaudeville routines set to rags, along with patriotic military formation dances. One routine is dedicated to Irene and Vernon Castle, who are credited with reviving ballroom dancing. Tragically, Vernon was a WWI pilot who died in 1918 in flight training. Another piece is from Stormy Weather, the movie based on the life of dancer Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, returning home after fighting in WWI. There will be a reading of letters from the trenches, including one of the Christmas Truce, when German and English soldiers laid down their guns to celebrate the holiday together. The audience will be invited to participate in sing-alongs of memorable tunes of the era, such as Pack Up Your Troubles, Over There, and I’m a Yankee Doodle Dandy. All Veteran are encouraged to attend as guests of honor at this event for their service to our nation. This free, family friendly program is open to the public and sponsored by a grant from the Westfield Cultural Council, a local agency supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council. “Elizabeth Colt: A Life of Art, Philanthropy and Civic Leadership” Join historian Bill Hosley for his program “Elizabeth Colt: A Life of Art, Philanthropy and Civic Leadership,” at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Hartford on May 19th from 1-2:00 pm. Admission is free. Elizabeth Colt, the wife of legendary arms inventor Samuel Colt, emerged as one of Hartford, Connecticut’s most influential civic leaders. Her legacy as an art patron, builder, charitable entrepreneur and philanthropist has never been surpassed and is remembered today in the buildings, park, museum wing, and public sculpture that bear the Colt name. Bill Hosley’s presentation will examine her life and work as seen through the Elizabeth Hart Jarvis Collection at the Wadsworth Atheneum. Coltsville was “authorized” as a National Park in
2014, but has not yet been officially “established,” and is overseen by Park Rangers from the Springfield Armory National Historic Site. As a result services and facilities are limited, although the park does offer programming and works with many of local
partners to tell the Colt story. For more information about the park or upcoming events, visit https://www.nps.gov/ colt. The Springfield Armory National Historic Site is the location of the nation’s first armory (1794-1968), and was
established by George Washington. The site includes historic grounds, buildings, and the world’s largest historic American military firearms collection. There is ample parking and the building is wheelchair accessible. The Museum is open
Wednesday to Sunday, November 1 to Memorial, and Daily Memorial Day to October 31, from 9 AM- 5 PM. Admission is free. For information call 413-7348551 or check www.nps.gov/ spar.

Come to Westfield Animal Shelter to meet Tulip.
Georgia, a young adult Lab mix, is a beautiful girl and her personality is really starting to shine! When she came to us, as a stray, she was fearful, but is working so hard to be trusting. Lottery applications for the 2018-2019 will be available at the Preschool Screenings. Parents will be notified by mid-June if their child is accepted for enrollment. A screening is required whether or not parents have a developmental concern.

Shades of Gray Civil War Era Camp Band Back by request! Experience the music of the Civil War while remembering the sacrifice of thousands of Union and Confederate Soldiers. Listen to Shades of Gray, a Civil War Era Camp Band, inside the Armory museum on Saturday, May 26 at 2:00pm. Admission is free. Shades of Gray is a Civil War era camp band composed of 6 members mostly made up of reenactors. They have performed all over New England, including the State House and historic Gettysburg. Sing-a-long with rousing patriotic songs such as “Oh Susanna”, “Camp Town Races, and “Bonnie Blue Flag”. While some songs express humor, other songs tell emotional stories of a time when men were pitted against both foes and family for causes they believed were right for them. The band got its start as a group of Confederate Civil War reenactors. Springfield Armory National Historic Site commemorates and preserves the site of the nation’s first armory, established in 1794. As a unit of the National Park Service, the Visitor Center, Museum, buildings and grounds are open Memorial Day to October 31 daily, 9am-5pm. Dates closed are Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. Admission is free. For

Westfield Memorial Day Parade Mayor Brian P. Sullivan announces that groups marching in the Memorial Day Parade will begin assembling at 9:00 am, May 28, near the Mestek Company property on North Elm Street. The parade will begin promptly at 10:00 AM. The parade route will be as follows: beginning at Mestek, the marchers will march south down North Elm Street, continuing across the Great River Bridge onto Elm Street, continuing south to Broad Street, turning right at the intersection of Broad Street and West Silver Street to Parker Memorial Park for the Memorial Day ceremony. No floats or commercial vehicles will participate in the parade. Only authorized city vehicles and veteran transport vehicles may participate. No dancing, acrobatics, or other celebratory activities are allowed. No animals may accompany participants.
