Diane SavioliChase and Smart Start Pre-School Display at the Agawam Public Library The Agawam Public Library is pleased to announce two art exhibits for the month of May. We welcome back local artist Diane SavioliChase and her exhibit Cuba:

Classic Cars. This is Diane’s 4th photography exhibit at the Agawam Library. Cuba: Classic Cars is a collection of poster-sized photographs taken on trips to Cuba. From personal cars to fancy taxis, the exhibit shows a range of colorful vintage automobiles that are still used as transportation on the island. Since parts of the island are still dif-

To Advertise Call 413-562-4181 ficult to access, these cars are increasingly rusting away and Diane seized the opportunity to document them. Diane has been an amateur photographer for 40 years. She specializes in travel photography and in recent years has focused on street photography by documenting the homeless in the Park Street area of Hartford where she works as an ultrasonographer at Hartford Hospital. Diane is also interested in roadside memorials and is particularly fond of ice cream cone signs that she documents throughout her travels and was the subject of her last exhibit at the library. Along with shows at the Agawam Library, Diane has had exhibits at the Chicopee, Westfield, West Springfield, Longmeadow, and Northampton Libraries, as well as the Valley Photo Center (Springfield), The Robert Floyd Gallery (Southampton) and the Rinova Gallery (Westfield). She especially likes exhibiting at the local libraries as they give the general public an opportunity to view her work.

Diane hopes that the exhibit will appeal to a range of viewers from children to vintage car collectors. Please join Diane for a reception on Thursday, May 17 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Gallery area of the library. “Every Child is an Artist” and Smart-Start Pre-School wants to show theirs off! The Children’s Room Gallery space and the cases on the main floor will contain collaborative and individual art creations across a variety of mediums from their students and their before and afterschool programs. This is Smart Start’s first show at the Agawam Library. Everyone is invited to attend their reception and silent auction on Thursday, May 10th from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. For more information, please contact Smart Start Pre-School. Visitors are welcome at the Agawam Public Library during regular open hours: Monday-Thursday 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.; Fridays 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; Saturdays 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Please contact Adult Services Librarian, Cher Collins at (413) 789-1550 X8851 or

When Mike Gage was hired at Prudential Insurance, Mike said “I’ll try it for six months”.here he is thirty five years later still in the insurance business. After twelve years at Prudential, he left to work six years with Liberty Mutual. Since 2001, he has worked for various independent agents. Seven of those years have been with Southwick Insurance Agency. Where the owners treat everyone well and he has the best view in the Southwick office. Helping the people find the right insurance at a competitive price and navagating claim issues to minimize stress and anxiety for his clients is what makes his job most rewarding. A happy client then tells others. If you don’t treat them well, they are going to tell even more people. It is very easy for people to put the client first. They always should because it’s the right thing to do. ing A West Springfield resident, Mike is very active as a basketball and field hockey official in Western MassachuCelebrat ! S setts. He graduated from American International College in 1983. He has been married for 35 years to his lovely 30 YEAR bride Wendy and they have two wonderful daughters, Sarah and Brittany. WGBY Asparagus Festival Kicks Off June 2

Senior FarmShare provides $125 of fresh vegetables to low-income seniors for only $10 CISA’s Senior FarmShare program offers low-income seniors access to low-cost, fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables at the height of the growing season. The application period for participation is open until June 1st. Eligible seniors can apply to participate at one of thirteen distribution sites throughout the Valley, and participants will be chosen by lottery when the application period closes on June 1st. The program is based on the CSA model: participants receive a “share” of produce, delivered weekly by a local farm for pick-up at a set time. Participants pay a $10 costshare and receive $125 in produce, and the program runs for 10 weeks beginning in July. Eligible seniors must be over the age of 60 and have an income below $24,280 or a total household income below $32,920. Distribution sites are located in: Athol, Greenfield, Turners Falls, Shelburne Falls, Chesterfield, Huntington, Chicopee, Holyoke, Palmer, and Springfield. To find contact information for each of these sites in order to request an application, visit buylocalfood.org or call Brian Snell at CISA, 413-665-7100. Senior FarmShare is part of CISA’s commitment to making local food available to everyone in our community. Now in its 14th year, Senior FarmShare will distribute over $50,000 in vegetables to 420 seniors in 2018. Funding for the Senior FarmShare program is provided by the MA Executive Office of Elder Affairs, individual contributions, and by grants from church communities.

Community spirit, environmental sustainability, local economic wellbeing. For all these reason, the WGBY Asparagus Festival celebrates “all things local and agricultural.” This year, the festival (wgby.org/asparagus) returns Saturday, June 2 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the Hadley Town Common with live music, local food and beer vendors, a makers’ and farmers’ market, PBS Kids games and, of course, visits by Curious George. The WGBY Asparagus Festival is free Saturday, June 2 with suggestion donation of $5/person (or $20 per family). It will be held rain or shine. This year, WGBY’s “Rooted in the Valley” stage will feature Latin Grammy Award-winning children’s musician Mister G at 12 noon, followed by three popular Signature Sounds acts: Heather Maloney (2–3 p.m.) — A singer-songwriter merging folk roots with indie rock; Jig Jam (3:30–4:30 p.m.) — A quartet blending the best of traditional Irish music with Bluegrass and Americana in a new genre dubbed “I-Grass” or “CeltGrass”; and Amanda Anne Platt & The Honeycutters (5–6 p.m.) — A traditional, honky-tonkflavored country/Americana sound. There will be no going thirsty either, with sodas,

~ GEORGIA ~

Tulip, an older Border Collie, loves to spend some of her time going on leisurely walks. She is quite bouncy and silly when she hangs out with staff and volunteers at the shelter. Tulip can be worried with new people and new situations, so her new family will need to be patient. Tulip would be well in a home with a confident dog and no children. Come to Westfield Animal Shelter to meet Tulip.

Georgia, a young adult Lab mix, is a beautiful girl and her personality is really starting to shine! When she came to us, as a stray, she was fearful, but is working so hard to be trusting. Her new family should continue socializing her and show her that life is great! Confident dogs would be a plus! Come to Westfield Animal Shelter to meet Georgia.

Lithuanian Church Celebrates Its 100th Anniversary The 100th Anniversary of any church is a momentous event for its members and St. Peter and St. Casimir parishioners in Westfield are doubly blessed to be celebrating the centennial milestone of two churches. Last fall, the dedication of St. Peter’s Church in 1916 and its Slovak heritage was celebrated with a Rededication Mass and Dinner-Dance on September 10th, 2017. Coming up next month on Sunday, June 3rd, 2018, we will be joining together again to celebrate the 100th year since the dedication of St. Casimir’s Church in Westfield in 1918. All parishioners, friends and families are invited to a Mass of Remembrance of the Dedication of St. Casimir’s

Church by people of Lithuanian heritage and will be held at St. Peter and St. Casimir Church at 10:30 am with a procession and picnic to follow. The procession will proceed after Mass to an area outside the church to bless a Hill of Crosses on church grounds. You are welcome to bring a cross to erect on the site if you wish. The Hill of Crosses is a beautiful Lithuanian tradition started back in the 1800’s after Lithuania unsuccessfully rebelled against Russia. Crosses and crucifixes started to appear on a Lithuanian hill and continues to this day. Over 100,000 crosses have been erected to remember those who have died. The Hill of Crosses has come to signify the peaceful endurance of Lithuanian Catholicism. Pope John Paul II declared the Hill of Crosses a place for hope, peace, love and sacrifice. We hope to develop it more and more with each passing year. The centennial picnic with the serving of ethnic and American foods, music, games for the kids, and raffles will begin at noon at the Sons of Erin outdoor grounds and pavilion at 22 Williams St, Westfield. Tickets must be purchased in advance by calling the rectory at 568-5421. Adult tickets cost $10 and children (ages 5-12) cost $5. Come join us in celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the dedication of St. Casimir’s Church on June 3, 2018 especially if you are of Lithuanian or Slovak descent or once attended these Churches. Come and enjoy your Lithuanian and Slovak families.
