HUNTINGTON – November 25-27 marks the 9th Annual College Week at Gateway Regional High School. On Monday, seniors will attend a scholarship assembly with tips on searching and applying for both national and local scholarships. The Local and Regional Scholarship Booklet will also be handed out to all seniors. Additionally, sophomores will have meetings to create fouryear plans. On Tuesday, November 26, the Guidance Department will host Rich Veres, an admissions officer from Springfield College, who will offer a College Essay Workshop to anybody interested, but with a special focus on juniors and seniors. Information and tips for writing and editing the college application and essay will be presented and distributed during this 30 minute seminar. Four-year planning will continue for sophomores. Parents of college-bound students are invited to attend a free seminar on financing a college education on Tuesday evening, November 26. Presented by the Massachusetts Educational Financing Authority (MEFA), the event will review many aspects of financing college, including applying for financial aid, searching for scholarships, understanding how aid is calculated and awarded, and options such as payment plans and loan programs. The event is free and will be held from 6–8 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center. Please call 685-1107 to sign up. On Wednesday, November 23, Gateway High School
alumni will return to school to be part of the Alumni College Fair. Alumni and college representatives will speak with current students about the college they attended, their majors and campus life. There is still room for alumni to sign up so please contact Meghan Wasiak (mwasiak@grsd.org or 413.685.1110) as soon as possible to register. To date, we have over 25 colleges, universities, technical schools and military branches attending. Another perk to this year’s college fair, will be that local community colleges (Springfield Technical and Holyoke) will accept seniors’ applications with no application fee on the day of the fair. A complete application includes a high school transcript, which must be requested in writing from your guidance counselor as soon as possible. Gateway High School students and staff are encouraged to wear college apparel on Wednesday in order to win spirit points and raffle prizes.

Literacy Month SOUTHWICK - November 2013 Family Literacy Month marks the 17th year that our state is acknowledging and celebrating the important role that families play in their children's literacy development. Family Literacy Month is an opportunity to engage parents and community partners to support children in out-ofschool time learning.(from Massachusetts Family Literacy Consortium website) Storytelling, family math nights, read-alouds, interactive sing-a-longs, and creating books and bookmarks are some examples of family learning activities. For more ideas on how your family can boost out-of-school literacy time, check out the Family Literacy Month display when you visit the Children’s Room at Southwick Public Library. Make November a time for family sharing, reading and singing together.

Westfield Creative Arts Center brings art classes to WSU’s Downtown Art Gallery WESTFIELD – The Westfield Creative Arts Center will offer a variety of fine arts and crafts classes at the Westfield State University Downtown Art Gallery at 105 Elm Street. Classes are taught by local artists and crafters and are open to adults ages 18 and over. The goal of the Westfield Creative Arts Center is “to create a friendly, fun environment where students can learn new skills, explore untapped creativity, and meet new people and old friends,” according to Lester Walsh, a director of the Westfield Creative Arts Center. Classes are offered weekly with specific workshops scheduled throughout the year. Currently, the Creative Arts Center is forming classes in basket-making, chair caning, beginner knitting, advanced knitting cables and bobbles, rug hooking, and rug braiding. Sketching and painting classes in oil, watercolor, and pastels are also available. An exclusive workshop in stained glass is scheduled for December 7. “This beautiful city has so much to offer, and it was thought that a central place for folks to take fine arts and craft instruction would fit perfectly in Westfield,” said Gail Maciorowski, a director of the Westfield Creative Arts Center. The classes are not college-accredited but are open to the community to provide an opportunity to gain new skills and enjoy creating artwork using a variety of mediums. “The Westfield State University Downtown Art Gallery is expanding its horizons and introducing additional programming,” said curator Faith Lund. “We are very excited and look forward to our collaboration with the Westfield Creative Arts Center.” There is a membership fee of $50 per year, which translates into a $20 savings for

each class taken throughout the year. Tuition for each class varies depending on the length and duration of the class. Students in the stained glass class will be able to use tools and glass provided by the instructors for a materials fee. “An Evening of Angels” Program Slated Dec. 10 WESTFIELD - Author Lori Szepelak of Southampton relishes her messages from the angelic realm. She will share her experiences of how her new book, Floors of the Forest, came to fruition during a program titled “An Evening of Angels” on Dec. 10 at the Westfield Athenaeum. The 6:30 p.m. program in the Lang Auditorium is part of the Athenaeum’s monthly Local Author Series. The event is free and open to the public. In her new book, just released from Balboa Press, a division of Hay House, Szepelak shares the revelations she received from angels one winter morning in February 2013 on her way to work. Szepelak is also the author of An Angel on My Shoulder which debuted in 2010.

“While I was driving to work I asked my guardian angel to help me determine the message of my second book,” she said. “Almost immediately, I heard the words ‘floors of the forest,’ and then the need to educate individuals – especially young people - across the globe to work in concert with their guardian angel to help preserve Mother Earth.” Szepelak noted that she was intrigued by the title and the concept fit perfectly into her own lifestyle – being an avid hiker and scuba diver. “I incorporated messages I heard in the spring of 2013 from the angels with what I knew about the environment, as well as my personal experiences in nature, and soon the book came to fruition effortlessly,” she said. “The angels were also particular in stressing that young people need to be engaged now so I’m hopeful that teens especially will consider attending

Be A Better Shopper
You're not much of a shopper, which may explain why you put off the purchase of Christmas gifts until the last minute. Yep, you're one of those last-minute shoppers delving through the leftovers on store shelves on Christmas Eve. This year, you're changing your ways. Here are some tips to ensure you're successful.
Research beforehand While some people may tell you exactly what they want, others won't have any idea and leave the choosing to you. Find out ahead of time what recipients like, want and need, and do some online shopping to see what's out that there might suit them. Start early Some people start their shopping the day after Christmas. You may not be able to go that far, but you can certainly be on the lookout for good deals throughout the year. You never know when one might pop up, and the earlier you start your shopping, the better the savings and selection will be. You might also get finished sooner! CT cont...

Come To Connecticut... Make a list Don't go shopping without any inkling of what you need to buy. This will lead to impulse purchases and an empty wallet in no time. Determine beforehand whom you need to buy for, what you need to buy them and how much you intend to spend on them. Be selective Anyone can pick out a gift for someone. To make your gifts special, you need to put thought into what you buy and take the time to personalize each and every gift, either with a handwritten note or some other token. Let
the recipient know why you selected what you did, and when possible, make it theirs with monograms, photos and such. Present with care After all the time you put in shopping, you don't want to stuff your gifts into bags and drop them at recipients' feet. They won't know how much effort you put into the selection process and their reaction may show it. Take the time to wrap your gifts beautifully and watch them get opened. The smiles

Anyone who has ever prepared a holiday dinner knows how hectic shopping for food a few days before can be. Grocery stores are often packed, prices may have escalated and prized inJUHGLHQWV PD\ EH KDUG WR ÀQG It pays to shop early for holiday feasts. For the best results, plan your dinner menu weeks before the holiday. Decide in late October what you're going to serve for Thanksgiving, make a list of the items you'll need and purchase a few with each regular shopping trip. Just make sure you check the expiration dates to ensure whatever you buy will stay fresh. Shop at times when the store is not as busy-early in the morning, mid-afternoon or late in the evening. That way, you can take your time shopping and look for the best deals. Assistance might also be more readily available, should you need it. Shop for real values. Retailers sometimes mark up merchandise before major holidays, so make sure the items you buy truly are on sale. If need be, be a cherry picker, that is, a person who purchases only the advertised specials. Yes, you may have to make an extra trip or two to the store, but the savings could more than make up for the money you spend on gas. Be wary of buying items in bulk. While you might save several cents a pound on fresh produce bought in bulk, the savings won't do you any good if much of it spoils before you have time to use it. Buy in bulk items you can freeze or store in the cabinet for a long time, like meats, bread, rice, beans and paper goods. Save yourself some headache this year and make a difference in your bottom line. Plan and shop for your holiday dinner early!

The Perfect Party Menu
The holiday season has arrived, and the to-do lists are stacking up. You've got decorating to do, gifts to buy and parties to plan. Better get a move on fast. Here are some factors to consider to help you plan the perfect party menu every time. What? What kind of party are you having? A dinner party? A fondue party? A cocktail party? A formal dinner party for 12 will require a larger menu than a fondue or cocktail party for 15. You will need a full-course meal for the dinner party, whereas you may opt for a few hors-d’oeuvre trays for the fondue or cocktail party. Why? Why are you having the party? To gather everyone together to celebrate the holidays? To celebrate the holidays and an anniversary, birthday or some other special event? The more elaborate the occasion, the more elaborate the menu may need to be. A combo holiday-promotion celebration, for example, might call for a cake and champagne in addition to several hors-d’oeuvres. Who? Whom are you inviting to the party? Everyone you know? A select few? The more people you invite, the wider the menu selection should be to cater to a number of tastes. If you are inviting
just a few friends, you should know their likes and dislikes and be able to cater your menu to that. Make sure you take any special diYou etary needs of your guests into accommomay dation. If someone is a vegetarian, diabetic or has food allergies, for example, you will want to serve whataccount for that in the menu. When? When are you having the party? Late ever you want at your holimorning? Mid-afternoon? Early evening? The time day party. Just make sure you take the factors will dictate the type and amount of food you serve. above into consideration and your menu suits A late morning party might call for a full brunch buf- the tone of the party. While cookies and milk fet, whereas a mid-afternoon tea party might call might satisfy a bunch of kids at a holiday party late in the afternoon, it won’t work for a table for a few pots of tea and a sheetcake. Where? Where are you having the party? At of adults looking forward to a late night holiday home? Somewhere else? Home parties may require dinner. you to plan the menu, whereas a party elsewhere might limit the menu planning or eliminate it altogether. If you are having a get-together at the local bowling alley, for example, you might be able to order SERVING WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS SINCE 1983 several pizzas for everyone to munch on COMMERCIAL • RESIDENTIAL and leave it at that. ✦ Custom Valances How? Time for a New Tradition When is it time to move beyond “tradition”
For a while you and your spouse enjoyed the Christmas holidays at your parents-first at one set of inlaws, then the other-usually both on Christmas Day. It didn’t matter that the two of you were loading up gifts and rushing from one house to another. The important issue was to spend equal time at both homes-and not offend either set of parents. (Pity those poor young couples who had divorced or separated parents and had four different homes beckoning, sometimes demanding, their attendance.) Then came the baby, then the babies-and celebrating the day became even more complicated. The gifts and paraphernalia to transport increased, but the size of the vehicle didn’t. In-law demands and expectations didn’t shift, but happy attitudes certainly did. What was once a look-forward-to experience became a dreaded, hassle-filled expedition. When time and emotions are stretched beyond the breaking point, something (or someone) has to give. Maybe what has to give is the understanding of “tradition.” Memories of having the family together and each opening “just-what-I-wanted” presents is a Rockwellian concept that most savor-or at least dream of. But who actually remembers what gifts were exchanged? Aren’t the warm memories usually of feelings-stability, appreciation, consideration, encouragement, gratitude, love? The question then becomes, is creating a positive memory a better tradition to establish than having a family assembly on a specific day? Is watching your children excitedly play with their new toys of more lasting value than getting your green bean casserole to Mom and Dad’s house on time? How and when do you establish your new, personal tradition that accommodates your family’s schedule? When the stress of meeting others’ expectations is taking a toll on your personal sanity, it’s time to reconsider what is really important in your life. When you face the facts that everyone is not always going to be happy with your decisions and pleasing others is an unattainable goal, you are finally ready to decide what is best for you and your family. Have at it. Pick a day when you can celebrate with your extended family and enjoy that day. It may be a day or two before (or after) Christmas. Whichever day you choose, remember the (413) 357-6321 positive events of that day. Lions members come from every walk of life, age and persuasion, but all have one thing in common: they enjoy helping others. While the primary function of the Club is charitable, its members often find involvement in Lionism leads to improved networking with others in the community. Third graders collecting for Soldier’s Home HUNTINGTON – Third grade students at Chester Elementary School have launched a collection of items to benefit the Soldier’s Home in Holyoke. Items are being collected by students and their families. Community members may leave donations at the school. “We kicked it off at our assembly on October 25, with a little skit about the project for the school,” noted third grade teacher Cindy Stokowski. “The kids have made posters to hang around the school, and are going into each classroom to explain the project.” A graph on the library window will mark the school’s progress in achieving their
goal of collecting 100 items. In addition to providing a service to the community, the hands-on project offers students learning opportunities in art and design (poster making), English Language Arts (writing poster content, writing and performing a skit for the school, and writing speeches to present to each classroom) and mathematics (computing and charting the progress the class is making toward their goal). Items being collected include art supplies, puzzles, new electric razors, wallets/ change purses, shampoo, sunglasses, large print crosswords and word search books, Kleenex, clothing items, popcorn, planting soil, and much more. A complete list is posted at the school, and in the Gateway e-newsletter Breaking News (www.grsd.org/ > News > Breaking News). The Soldier’s Home in Holyoke provides a range of health care services, including long term, residential and outpatient care, to eligible Massachusetts veterans.

Today with Jay: Where Were You on That Date? By JAY BERGER For the last two weeks, the media has been filled with stories about the 50th anniversary of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination in Dallas. Reporters have been out on the street, asking anyone who will answer, “Where were you and what do you remember?” I was on a flight from Chicago O’Hare to Bradley Field. About 30 minutes into the flight, the captain announced that the President has been shot in Dallas. He promised to keep us updated. The cabin was quiet except for a few whispers. Ten minutes later, we learned that the President was at Parkland Hospital and in grave condition. Governor Connally also had been shot. Mrs. Kennedy was all right. Less than five minutes later came the announcement that JFK was dead and that Lyndon Johnson was now the President of the United States. There were many tear-stained faces on the plane; not just passengers, but crew as well. When our plane landed, the same tearful scene was present at Bradley Field, as well as home. The anniversary has reminded me that in life, there are many such moments that stay etched in our minds. Most of my sharpest memories—other than family memories (and I’ll get to those in a few paragraphs)— pertain to war. The very first was December 7, 1941: Pearl Harbor bombed by Japan. I was at home with my family huddled around the radio.

(That was entertainment in those days.) Suddenly, the announcer broke in saying that the United States Naval base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii had been attacked by Japanese bombers and submarines. Neither my family nor I knew where Pearl Harbor was and how the Japanese could possibly get there with bombers. The next day, President Roosevelt declared December 7 as “a day that will live in Infamy”. Before long, everyone knew where Pearl Harbor

was and what took place there. My dad said to me, “Jay, if we go to war and it lasts a couple of years, you’ll be in it!” He was right. The next date I remember was April 12, 1945: That was the day that FDR died. In our household, FDR was godlike. His picture was everywhere. FDR put everyone to work; he pulled the US out of the Depression; he made war on tyrants and evil people. That same day, I left Seattle for the Pacific conflict. May 4, 1945: The captain of our troop ship announced that everyone had to be certain that their life preservers were on. A Japanese submarine was shadowing out ship and our destroyer escort was hurrying to combat it. An hour or so later, the captain came back on with the news that the war in Europe was ending. The Allies had captured Berlin. Hitler was dead and the Nazis had surren-
dered. The final war date was September 2, 1945. I was on Okinawa, getting ready for the invasion of Japan; an announcement was made that the country had surrendered and the war in the Pacific had ended. But we were told, “Get your gear together. You will be on a plane in four hours to become one of the first occupied forces in Japan.” Our interpreter spent the next hour teaching us a few Japanese words. In terms of family dates: the date of engagement; the date of marriage; the birthdays of your children and grandchildren, wife and parents are etched in one’s memory. Certain days in your work and civil life, as well as friendships are also remembered. Isn’t that how Hallmark stays in business?

When it comes to 21st century multimedia platforms, “hyper local is a term you hear a lot. It’s not a new idea. In fact, ćF 8FTUĕFME /FXT has been providing readers with “hyper local news coverage of Westfield, Southwick, and the Hilltowns all along. Television, radio and regional newspapers only provide fleeting coverage of local issues you care about. TV stations and big newspaper publishers, after years of cutbacks and mergers, frankly aren’t able to provide in-depth coverage of smaller markets anymore. But, day in and day out, 5IF 8FTUGJFME /FXT provides consistant coverage of the stories you need to know about, that are important to your city, town, neighborhood and home.
