Grandfamilies? Grandfamilies is the name used to describe families that are created when a relative or friend rises to care for another relative’s children. This happens for a multitude of reasons, with the occurrence on the rise. There are even great grandparents parenting again! To help alleviate your difficulties and added stress we offer support groups where you are welcome to come, to learn about resources, to share and be heard. The Westfield Council On Aging and the Occupational Therapy Department at Springfield College will once again collaborate to offer a limited number of older adults in Westfield a unique home assessment opportunity. Pairs of students determine the level of safety and convenience in the home of their assigned older participant by conducting a home visit and an interview. The students address problem areas and make recommendations in a written report that is reviewed by the class professor, Dr. Joan Simmons. Participants receive a copy of the report so that they can implement any of the recommendations if they choose to do so. This is a wonderful opportunity
for older adults with any mobility or sensory limitations to discover how they might function more easily and independently at home. If you would like to participate in this unique program or if you have questions, please call Tina Gorman or Fran Aguda at the Westfield Senior Center, 562-6435.

We welcome all patients with both diagnosed and suspected mast cell diseases and multiple allergies, their families, caregivers, friends, as well as interested students and medical personnel from anywhere in MA and beyond. Mast cells run the immune system and are responsible for allergic reactions, headaches, GI issues, and multiple other issues when they are over active. A problem that is growing in recognition, mast cell disease is still unknown or misunderstood by many medical personnel. Our Speaker will be Dr. Jonathan Bayuk, Medical Director of AIANE, Chief of the Allergy and Immunology Division at Baystate Medical Center, Director of Allergy and Immunology Curriculum at Baystate Medical Center and Tufts University School of Medicine, assistant professor of medicine at Tufts and instructor at Springfield College. A noted expert in the field, Dr. Bayuk is both a patient favorite and an engaging, gifted speaker. There will be time for questions, and to engage with other attendees. There is no fee to attend. Due to possible patient reactions, we ask that attendees do not use/wear any scented products (including heavily scented hygiene products) or use any hand sanitizers, and refrain from eating or drinking anything but water during the meeting. THEATRE RE presents: The Nature of Forgetting Conceived and Directed by Guillauma Pige Friday, November 2, 8:00PM, Bowker Auditorium The Nature of Forgetting bursts with creativity, joy, and heartache. Through movement of great physicality (no words are spoken) and compelling live music, The Nature of Forgetting is the story a middle aged father struggling in the early stages of dementia. The piece is a life-affirming journey into a weakened mind, where broken does not have to mean defeated. A journey of shining humanity and celebration of a life well lived.

Ghostology 201 at WSPL Tuesday, October 23rd from 6:30-8:30pm: Ghostology 201: The Darker Side Revealed – with Agawam Paranormal. How do angels and demons, of biblical lore, affect our daily lives and the paranormal? What is the difference between necromancy and ghost hunting? What are the signs of a demonic possession? While it is believed that only a very small percentage of paranormal activity is actually caused by demons and their like (at least outside of Hollywood), it is unquestionably a very popular subject. In this program, the Agawam Paranormal team will try to separate fact from fiction to see how it all fits together. Following the presentation, the team will have three workstations set up for attendees to experience some of the most popular equipment used in paranormal investigations. After this, they will conduct a short EVP session in the Library and review the results live, revealing anything that may have been captured. Due to the subject matter, this program may not be appropriate for young children. Members of the team will be available for questions.

The exact number of prizes awarded each month will be decided by Westfield News Group, LLC in its sole discretion. The prizes to be awarded each week will be determined by Westfield News Group, LLC In the event that there are more eligible winners than the number of prizes awarded for a particular week, Westfield News Group, LLC will randomly select one winner for that particular week. Winner is determined by most correct games won. The tiebreaker is used when more than one entry have the same number of wins. At that point, the total number of points given by the contestant will determine winner. In the event of a game not being completed, that game will not be considered in the final tabulation for that week’s games. When it comes to 21st century multimedia platforms, “hyper local” is a term you hear a lot. It’s not a new idea. In fact, The Westfield News has been providing readers with “hyper local” news coverage of Westfield, Southwick, and the Hilltowns all along. Television, radio and regional newpapers only provide fleeting coverage of local issues you care about. TV stations and big newspaper publishers, after years of cutbacks and mergers, frankly aren’t able to provide in-depth coverage of smaller markets anymore.

But, day in and day out, The Westfield News provides consistant coverage of the stories you need to know about, that are important to your city, town, neighborhood and home.
