“Much more needs to be done to prevent suicide. Yet, suicide and the underlying mental disorders that can sometimes lead to suicide continue to be surrounded by misinformation and stigma,” said Cheryl Ronzoni, Western MA Chapter Associate Area Director. “This walk is about reducing that stigma, raising awareness and raising needed funds for research and local prevention programs.” The Springfield community walk will begin at the MassMutual Center in downtown Springfield at 8:30am (registration) and end at the MassMutual Center at approximately 12:00pm. The Walk route will be along the Springfield riverfront on Columbus Avenue. According to AFSP, close to 700,000 people will make a suicide attempt requiring medical care and more than 38,000 will die by suicide in the U.S. every year.

Smart snacking advice for better health (Family Features) Snacks are a common aspect of most Americans' daily diets. Although you may feel like stealing nibbles between meals is a guilt-worthy offense, making smart snacking choices can actually contribute to a healthy eating plan. According to a recent survey conducted by ORC International, snacking is as American as apple pie. Nearly all Americans (98 percent) have snacked at least once in the last two weeks, and the majority consumes one to two snacks every day. You may be surprised to learn that these habits are actually supported by leading health experts. According to staff at The Mayo Clinic, most well-planned diets allow for snacks between meals to help fight hunger. Numerous
other experts advocate snacks as a way to manage food intake throughout the day, which keeps your metabolism running strong and helps you
avoid over-eating at any one meal. If you're like the majority of participants in the recent snacking survey, calories, portability and nutritional content, such as protein and fiber, are top considerations when choosing a snack. Moderation and balance are also important to successful snacking. To be sure you're never caught without a smart snacking option, consider these snacking survival tips:
Look for snacks that combine food groups for an extra nutrition punch. For example, pair a low-fat dairy product, such as yogurt or cottage cheese, with fresh fruit for a tasty and satisfying treat. Don't sacrifice calories for convenience. Many on-the-go bars are loaded with sugar and lack overall nutrition, but there are smart alternatives. Baked with pieces of real fruit and non-genetically modified ground whole soybeans, SOYJOY(r) is an all-natural,
certified gluten-free snack bar available in seven delicious flavors. Each bar offers the perfect combination of carbohydrates, plant-based protein and fiber for only 130-140 calories. When you need a little more to fill you up, opt for high-fiber and high-water foods. These options let you eat more volume without loading up the calories. Fruits and vegetables, whole grains and nuts are all good choices when you're feeling extra hungry. Try 1/2 cup shelled edamame for a convenient, high-fiber snack. Keep quick, low-calorie snacks on hand. A large apple, three and a half cups of popcorn or a large handful of almonds (about 23) are all under 150 calories. The key is doing the math and measuring ahead of time so you're not tempted to make a less healthy choice when you're crunched for time and hunger strikes. Manage your sweet tooth with better-for-you snack options. Every diet has room for indulgences once in a while, but save those for special occasions. When you're craving something sweet, fruit can often appease your taste buds. Reach for frozen bananas, grapes or even a baked apple sprinkled with cinnamon. For more delicious snacking tips and recipes, visit www.soyjoy.com, like SOYJOY on Facebook and follow @SOYJOYUS on Twitter.

BBQ Chili in freshness), is a great way to reduce preparation time. Products such as Byron's Fully Cooked Pork BBQ (available at Sam's Club) are among the easiest time savers, delivering authentic, slowsmoked barbecue with the convenience of heat-andserve. These items also can add an unexpected twist to the dining occasion. Kimberly Sneed, who writes about family, mealtime and more on her blog, A Night Owl, shared some creative meal suggestions her family enjoys when the craving for comfort food hits. "We love traditional comfort food favorites, but sometimes it's fun to add your own personal touch," Sneed said. "For example, my boys love pizza, so when the seasons change I swap out tropical toppings, like pineapple and ham, for savory ones, such as barbecue and caramelized onions." Adding such variety to the mealtime mix can introduce new, welcome flavors into traditional favorites. Families can spice up their go-to recipes any number of ways, such as using barbecue to top a potato, stuff a taco or stir into chili, without adding any additional time. A simmering BBQ chili, in fact, is the perfect midweek meal for families looking for a fall-friendly dinner, without the fuss. Using a quality, fully cooked meat such as Byron's, which is hickory-smoked, hand-pulled and expertly spiced, makes this a satisfying, stress-free meal to produce. "Dishes that are simple to prepare and easy to clean up are a mom's dream come true," said Sneed. "As a mother with a full-time job, I use recipes like this to save on both prep time and cleanup." For other savory comfort food recipes that make family mealtime easy, visit byronsbbq.com.

Dishwashers are for dishes, not for dangerous chemicals BY TOM AND RAY MAGLIOZZI Dear Tom and Ray: My wife says using our dishwasher as a parts cleaner is hurting our dishwasher. I say it is not. But I have learned to run an empty load after a load of parts so that all the dishes in the next load washed do not taste like transmission fluid. It avoids the kids spitting out their milk like they have been poisoned. I also have learned the length of the wash cycle, so I can complete the process before my wife returns home. As a backup system, I have learned to set a timer so that I remember to remove the parts. I try to wipe all the transmission fluid, brake fluid, powersteering fluid or engine oil from the parts before washing them. The dishwasher really cleans those parts. Please settle this disagreement. -- David RAY: I see two problems with this, David. Well, maybe more if you include your impending divorce and your kids hating you. TOM: Problem 1 is environmental: You're washing petroleum products off of automotive parts, and sending them down the drain. RAY: That means they're either contaminating your city's rivers and streams, or that that stuff is going into your septic system and potentially leaching into your own groundwater. Neither one of those, if you think about it, is a good idea. TOM: Problem 2 is that you're potentially poisoning your kids. The reason they spit out their milk like they've been poisoned is because you're poisoning them: They're ingesting small quantities of petroleum distillates. This is also, if you think about it, not a good idea. RAY: The key words being "if you think about it."

would be that you take the family dishwasher -- the one you've already contaminated -- and install that in the garage. Then buy your poor wife and kids a nice, clean, See Car Talk, Page 18

Then when you need to clean parts, you pay them a few bucks to use their parts cleaner. They'll have a grease trap and a contract with a hazardous waste disposal service that comes once a week, or once a month,
to collect the grease and grime and haul it away. RAY: And probably dump it down their own kitchen sink! TOM: Actually, no. Not unless they want to pay tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines. The EPA takes that stuff very seriously. RAY: But I'd say your dishwasher privileges are hereby suspended,
David. Time to clean up your act and find another way to clean the parts. *** What is the most cost-effective way to buy a car? Lawn care tips for fall (Family Features) Taking time in the fall to prepare your lawn for the colder months ahead will pay dividends come spring and allow you to enjoy lusher, greener grass when temperatures rise again. Fertilizing Providing nutrients to your lawn before cold weather strikes is good for strengthening roots and increasing the nutrients stored for an earlier spring green. While the top growth of grass stops, grass plants are storing nutrients and energy for the following season. To determine the best ratio of fertilizer for the soil in your yard, you should utilize a soil test. Otherwise, look for fertilizer with a nitrogenphosphate-potassium (NPK) ratio of 3:1:2 or 4:1:2. When applying the fertilizer, make sure that you follow

the application instructions and rate information on the package and use a calibrated spreader to apply the correct amount. It is also a good rule to apply the fertilizer in the fall about 2-3 weeks before the ground freezes so the plant can start to take up some of the nutrients. Instead of pacing the yard with a push spreader, consider a tow-behind spreader attached to your riding lawn mower or garden tractor. An attachment, such as a pulltype spin spreader from John Deere, can quickly distribute fertilizer evenly across your yard. Aerating Aerating, the process of removing plugs of soil and thatch from the lawn, is ideal in cooler months. It encourages deep rooting, improves water and nutrient penetration, and promotes growth of

beneficial soil microorganisms. There are a variety of techniques you can use to penetrate the soil such as spiked shoes or spray-on liquids, but to most effectively aerate soil, attach a dethatcher, or a plug aerator behind a riding mower or tractor to remove plugs of soil from two to three inches deep. Mulching If you prefer not to rake or bag grass or leaves, mulching with a mower is an ideal alternative. Be sure to mulch leaves only when they are dry to avoid damp and wet leaves clumping or building up under mower decks. Remember that grass needs sunlight in the fall to help store food for winter, so don’t wait until your lawn is completely matted down with leaves to mulch. A thin layer of mulched leaves is ideal and helps add nutrients to the soil, reducing the need for fertilizer. Selecting the right mower with mulching attachments or features can save a great deal of time and help ensure a consistent layer of mulch across the yard. For example, John Deere 100-Series lawn tractors have three-in-one mowing decks, which allow you to choose to mulch, bag or allow side-discharge. Composting Creating a compost pile allows you to turn organic material into rich soil. The fall season is a good time to create a compost pile with decaying yard matter, such as vegetables, grass clippings and leaves, which can provide nutrient-rich soil for spring planting. For best

results, alternate layers of “brown,” or high carbon materials, with grass clippings. Using a rear bagger with your lawn mower or tractor will help make collecting grass clippings a breeze, and adding to your compost pile is as simple as backing up to the spot and unloading. Another optional mower
attachment, the lawn sweeper, brushes leaves into a hamper, much like a broom and dustpan. Taking these steps will prepare your lawn for the winter and help it come back strong, healthy and beautiful in the spring. Hyper • Local
When it comes to 21st century multimedia platforms, “hyper local” is a term you hear a lot. It’s not a new idea. In fact, The Westfield News has been providing readers with “hyper local” news coverage of Westfield, Southwick, and the Hilltowns all along. Television, radio and regional newspapers only provide fleeting coverage of local issues you care about. TV stations and big newspaper publishers, after years of cutbacks and mergers, frankly aren’t able to provide in-depth coverage of smaller markets anymore. But, day in and day out, The Westfield News provides consistant coverage of the stories you need to know about, that are important to your city, town, neighborhood and home.
