Greetings from Keith Evans

President, Westminster

Dear Friends, Welcome to a new season of the arts at Westminster! This year is unlike any other in some of the visible limitations that we are living with during the COVID-19 pandemic. And yet, the arts at Westminster are flourishing. Our community’s creative vision and ambition is as vibrant as ever and finds expression all over campus. Every space, indoors and out, is a potential spot for practice or performance. Stages have been reimagined for both drama and distance and artists of all kinds find inspiration in the unconventional circumstances we all encounter each day. As our audience, you play a critical role in encouraging this unyielding spirit. Whether you find yourself participating in person or virtually, your support of the arts at Westminster has never been more important. As our community of support, you lend strength and resilience to our students and faculty and for that, we are grateful! We also offer our thanks to our devoted teachers, our technical experts, our parent volunteers, and our sponsors. We are blessed to have so many committed and talented people working together on behalf of our emerging student artists. Thank you. Best wishes, Keith Evans President

The mission of the Westminster Band program is to provide a positive musical, educational, and social experience through the rehearsal and performance of high quality music for winds and percussion. The various ensembles are an integral part of campus culture, performing at concerts and events throughout the school year. A substantive music education through performance in winds and percussion develops aesthetic sensitivity, cultivates a creative outlet, fosters listening skills, develops cultural sensitivity, and addresses cognitive, affective, and kinesthetic learning modes simultaneously. Research suggests that music education can help students excel in academic areas other than music, including language, spatial reasoning, mathematics, and problem solving. Ancillary benefits of arts training include mastery in individual, small,

and large groups; prolonged attention span, camaraderie, and community. The Fifth Grade and Middle School Beginning and Novice Bands are for students who have limited or no playing experience. Students then progress through Advanced and Concert Bands as they become more experienced and proficient musicians. As students advance to the Upper School, they have the opportunity to perform in Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble. Additionally, musical offerings are available in jazz, chamber music, samba, percussion ensemble, pep band, and the Westminster Summer Concert Band, a community ensemble. Individualized and small group instruction are augmented by part-time faculty who specialize in instrumental pedagogy and performance, and who are deeply connected to the Atlanta music community.

“Music of the Season” concert. During the spring semester there are three more concerts: one with orchestra (which features a masterwork for chorus and orchestra), a service for Holy Week, and a “Senior Honors Night” concert that celebrates our Choral Music seniors in a more casual talent show atmosphere. Most of these choral musicians have been singing since their earliest school days and many study voice privately with area teachers. Their experience in this communal activity helps influence a lifetime of appreciation for the arts.

The Upper School curriculum features two choruses, one for ninth graders, the other (called the “Chorale”) for Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors. Both choruses learn diverse and demanding repertoire spanning a wide range of musical styles. Members of the groups are trained in vocal technique, music theory, and sight-singing. No audition is required to participate. Performance highlights each year include the annual performance of Handel’s Messiah with the Chamber Orchestra, an annual tradition of great excitement in the community, and the

Act 1 The Lodger Act 2 Sabotage Act 3 The 39 Steps Synopsis Tonight our theater is the home of a radio studio circa 1942. Our cast is a group of voice actors working in the prime of the era of radio drama. We come together to share 3 tales of suspense from the master himself, Alfred Hitchcock. In “The Lodger” we discover that sometimes the money just isn’t worth the risk. In “Sabotage” a revolutionary act claims the innocent, but everyone must pay the piper eventually. Finally, in “The 39 Steps” an international plot is revealed and thwarted by the most unlikely of couples. Spies, murder, love, revenge all played out live before your very ears.

Director’s Letter – Vintage Hitchcock: A Live Radio Play By Joe Landry The year is 1940. The family crowds around the radio to be taken on a thrilling ride of suspense and terror. And in the studio, a group of actors huddles nervously around a microphone, armed only with props and noise makers to paint their story. Before there were iPads, the internet and TikTok, this was high drama. It is part of theatre’s rich legacy. As children, both of us listened to classic radio dramas on vinyl. There is something magical about the world that is created when you close your eyes and give control to the auditory sense. The scenes your mind creates are somehow more vivid than anything you see on screen or stage. Like being immersed in the reading of a good book, an auditory drama puts the listener deep within the action. When the challenges of presenting a typical drama during the pandemic seemed to be overly fraught with risk, we knew this was the right opportunity to share a childhood joy with our young actors. These three early Hitchcock works were presented on radio and on film early in the director’s career. They weren’t acclaimed as films, but they made excellent radio drama. We encourage you to sit back and close your eyes from time to time and just listen. Of course, we won’t scold you if you peek. -Matt and Stacy

ENSEMBLE CHRIS WALTERS Director

JASON MAYNARD Assistant Director and Accompanist

The Westminster Ensemble is the advanced chamber chorus of the Upper School Choral Music program, and is comprised of Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors. Ensemble is an auditioned chorus, which performs sacred and secular music from the Renaissance to the present, as well as more contemporary music, which might draw influence from Gregorian chant, Appalachian folk tunes, AfricanAmerican spirituals, American musical theatre, or other popular repertoire.

December’s “Reunion Concert” is a much-loved Westminster tradition, and members of past Ensembles join their younger colleagues on stage to perform familiar repertoire of all styles and varieties. The Ensemble program features an annual concert tour during spring break; within the last few years, they have appeared in concert at prominent venues in Prague, Rome, Florence, Berlin, London, Paris, Madrid, Barcelona, Salzburg, Vienna, and Amsterdam.

groups are long-lasting, and it is no surprise to hear these groups singing for homecoming games, the “Pigskin Picnic,” and other social occasions. Other on-campus singing events for the a cappella groups include the Ensemble Reunion concert, and the end-of-year spring concert, as well as two Upper School assemblies devoted entirely to their music-making.

The popular collegiate tradition of a cappella singing has been a part of Westminster’s musical scene for many years. Upper School singers are invited to audition for Men’s A Capella (MAC) or Women’s A Capella (WAC) in the spring of the prior school year. The groups are student-led and have always enjoyed sensational reviews from fellow students, faculty members, and parents. The friendships which grow out of these

The Westminster Orchestra Program, recognized by former Atlanta Journal Constitution classical music critic Derrick Henry as “one of the most distinguished [string programs] in the country, was established in 1981 by Peg Neuen. The program consists of eight performing groups offering musical opportunities for students at all age levels. At the Lower School level, beginning and intermediate orchestra students perform in the Third Grade, Fourth Grade Orchestra and Fifth Grade Orchestra. Middle School students have the opportunity to participate in either the Beginning and Novice Orchestra, Sixth Grade Orchestra, Seventh Grade Orchestra, and Eighth Grade Orchestra. Upper School students perform in the Chamber Orchestra. Unique to the orchestra program is the chamber music component; all members of the Fourth Grade Orchestra, Fifth Grade Orchestra, Middle School Orchestras, and Chamber Orchestra participate in chamber music ensembles.

TAMARA DWORETZ Instructor JOLI WU Instructor

Fourth grade and fifth grade chamber music ensembles perform recitals in October and March, respectively, Middle School ensembles perform two Coffee Concerts in the Kellett Theatre of the Broyles Arts Center. Chamber Orchestra ensembles are featured during the Fall Coffee Concert in November and another Tea Concert in April in honor of graduating seniors. Individuals within the orchestras have excelled as well. Members of the Westminster orchestra program have performed in the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra, Emory Youth Symphony Orchestra, Georgia Youth Symphony Orchestra, Emory Junior Chamber Orchestra, and Metropolitan Youth Symphony Orchestra. Students have also participated in Franklin Pond, Fall Into Spring, and the Emory Youth Chamber Music Program. The Westminster orchestra members are looking forward to an exciting 2020-21 season.

TECH CREW HUDSON ADAMS Technical Director

The Westminster Technical Crew offers students an opportunity to get involved behind-the-scenes on all Westminster Players and Dance Corps productions. The crew strives to make each production in Kellett Theatre and McCain Chapel run as smoothly and seamlessly as possible. The students handle the coordination and operation of lighting and sound systems; the manipulation and management of scenery; and the backstage organization of properties and wardrobe. Students earn points

towards membership in the International Thespian Society – an honor society recognizing excellence in theatre studies. They also attend the Georgia Thespian Conference in Columbus, GA and participate in the Tech Challenge; where individual and team skills are tested in the areas of lighting, sound, costumes and stagecraft. Students are encouraged to explore all aspects of theatre both onstage and backstage. This well-rounded experience prepares them for potentially continuing their theatre studies at the collegiate level.
