CONTENTS

As the sun creeps back into town, we welcome our favourite season at THE WHITEPEPPER HQ. For Spring 15 we went back to our whimsical roots, with a collection inspired by delicate elements of children’s clothing. Look out for the ‘Child’s Play’ collection modeled by the beautiful India Tueresely (page 50), shot by the talented Kailindey Willaims (page 72) and road-tested by East London based bike collective Little Wheels on page 34. Summer is all about escape, and this year we envisaged a Nordic retreat when designing our Summer offering. The phenomenally talented duo Zoe Hancock and Helen Kirkbright shot their favourite pieces on our neighbourhood streets of East London (page 4), whilst ultimate cool girl Miriam Marlene Waldner took the collection on a tour of her hometown, Berlin, from page 38. As ever, this magazine is a little bit of everything we love right now, and a chance for you to step into our fun, manic, and sometimes downright silly, WHITEPEPPER world. THE WHITEPEPPER. x

TWP MEETS...

Danielle Fejer and Sam Dunn are the brains and beauties behind East London bike collective Little Wheels. We caught up with the girls to chat BMX’s, tattoos and what they’re doing to get more girls behind the wheel!

35

little college for two years and never knew each other at all until we both simultaneously decided we wanted to race bikes with no brakes in circles on the same day. Tell us about your weekly bike rides! D: We organise group rides every so often, sometimes these are women only and sometimes mixed. We just want to get more girls on bikes. We always meet at Look Mum No Hands at Old Street, the food is perfect fuel for a bike ride. What’s been the highlight of Little Wheels so far? D: I’ve pretty much enjoyed every little thing! The T-shirts we had printed have just about sold out, and people all around the world have been buying them, so that’s something I’m definitely pleased with even though it was all Sam’s design! I’m also super happy with the friendship that has came from Little Wheels, it’s never a dull moment when Sam and I go on a little

THEWHITEPEPPER.COM

Tell us all about Little Wheels! How did you guys meet and what’s the idea behind the brand? Dani: We met at Women’s Track Cycling sessions at Herne Hill Velodrome in south London. We bonded over being from the same area, being creative and a love of bikes! We actually went to the same college in Middlesbrough but didn’t know each other until London. We ride fixed gear bikes for fun and fitness and occasionally race too. Little Wheels is a blog we started less than a year ago. It started quite naturally, it was a mutual interest to do our little bit and help to promote women’s cycling in a fun and fresh way. Sam: I remember hearing Dani talking behind me at Herne Hill when we were lining up on the railing ready to ride, I turned round and asked where she’s from as we basically sound exactly the same. When we started talking about where we were from and which college we’d been to it was so funny. We’ve lived in neighbouring towns our whole life, went to the same

adventure, we’re always crying with laughter. S: Yeah the whole thing has been really good so far, making our first shirt was definitely a highlight, also getting sponsored by Met Helmets at the beginning of this year. The upcoming work with Adidas is another big thing for us, We’re just enjoying the opportunities we’ve been given so far and can’t wait to see where else we can go. You’re based in East London, what’s your favourite bike route around our part of town? D: We love East London, you can usually find us hanging around Brick Lane on a Friday. We always get cakes from Patisserie Valerie and we like dropping by Slam City Skates to check out their socks and hats. We love riding BMX’s at Haggerston pump track too. S: I love taking the BMX to Victoria Park skatepark during the day when it’s pretty empty, Stratford isn’t far from both of us too, so the velodrome, road circuit and BMX track are all amazing facilities within a 20 minute ride.

THEWHITEPEPPER.COM

We hear you’re shooting with Adidas, can you tell us all about it? D: Yes! They invited us along to their offices to check out the new cycling kit, which looks amazing! We’re doing a shoot this Saturday which will go live on the Adidas UK Instagram account. We can’t wait to try the new kit it looks amazing! S: Some of the details on this seasons kit are perfect, really reflecting the heritage of the Adidas brand with some gorgeous colours and materials in the mix. We can’t wait to ride around London in it. We LOVE the Little Wheels logo; who drew that, and are you both illustrators in your spare time? D: Before Little Wheels became anything tangible I had wanted a bike tattoo for a while and on a trip to New York in June last year the opportunity arose. I described what I wanted to the tattoo artist and after a few different ideas it was on my skin. I came back

and asked a friend who is a graphic designer to put it together with my hand writing saying ‘Little Wheels’ and the logo was done.! I enjoy drawing and do it in my spare time when I have time, unlike Sam who is super illustrator extraordinaire, which is so inspiring. S: Yeah we formed Little Wheels from Dani’s existing instagram account based on her love of bikes, she’s the original little wheeler! It felt natural to take the idea and make it into a collective effort that we can both use to promote women’s cycling and have fun with. So we already had the logo and idea in the beginning, but now we can take it in any direction we like. I’m a full time freelance illustrator and it’s lovely to be my own client and work with Dani on coming up with t-shirts that we’d both love to wear. The t-shirts are awesome! Has the Little Wheels merchandise on site been well received? S: We’ve got about two shirts left from the first print run, so yes! We’ll be doing a new variation of that soon and we’re also planning our own designs to add to the site. D: Since we’re both creative heads, designing merchandise is something we’ve always been keen on doing. Sam did our first T-shirt design and we’ve got more in the pipeline! Speaking of amazing design, what are your favourite WHITEPEPPER pieces? D: I absolutely love the dinosaur bomber, the print is amazing! We both love dinosaurs so it’s perfect and comfortable to ride in! I also love the cut on the oversized denim dungarees and they’re really comfy too. S: Dinosaur bomber for me too! It’s amazing, I love the fit and the embroidered pattern. The dinosaur jumpsuit is another favourite piece, super comfy for bike rides!

OUR KIND OF GIRL

Fresh from her Dolls House exhibition at KK Outlet in Hoxton, we asked wonderfully energetic and achingly cool East-London illustrator Hattie Stewart to tell us all about her amazing space, work and style.

Work Hard & Be Nice To People Print “This is by Anthony

MY SPACE

MY STYLE

THEWHITEPEPPER.COM

“I couldn’t live without the Tommy Hilfiger dungarees which I’m wearing in this picture. I found them years ago in Rokit for £15, and they’re my absolute dream item. I have about 10 pairs of dungarees and I am a massive jumpsuit girl. I wear everything big and oversized, which is why I like THE WHITEPEPPER stuff so much. I just want to be comfy, especially when I’m working. Comfy cool is what I’m going for I guess!”

47

“My studio is in a railway arch just across the canal from THE WHITEPEPPER HQ! I share the space with lots of animators, designers and illustrators, who are mostly friends from university. It’s great to be surrounded by so much super-talent; for example Andy Baker who does lots of animation with me, Rose Blake, Laura Bird and my best friend Becky who is onehalf of the Becky & Joes Art duo. There’s a big collective of people at the studio so it’s always really fun, loud and crazy. I freakin’ love it. I’m right at the back of the studio which is probably best as I get distracted so easily! My desk area is what I’d call organised chaos, it’s completely full of so much stuff. Everyone plays their own music, so whilst I’m working I stick on a playlist or watch documentaries; something I don’t need to think about which can roll on and on. At the moment I can’t get enough of Sky Ferreira or the new Mark Ronson album; he’s teamed up with Kevin Parker (of Tame Impala) on some tracks, who I’m absolutely obsessed with. My all time favourite band right there.”

Burrell, a graphic designer and artist who is with the same agency as me. He does some amazing pieces with motivational slogans like this one. We recently collaborated on a piece for a documentary called ’Made You Look,’ which is all about the differences between digital and analogue work in designers and illustrators. Anthony is an amazing, lovely guy who is a great supporter of young artists so I’m hoping we can collaborate on something together again soon. It’s so nice to have someone you admire support what you do."

48

MY WORK

“I always drew right from being young, drawing my own toys was better than playing with them. I studied Illustration at Kingston, but I think it’s when I started illustrating magazine covers that things really took off. Graduating in 2010 when social media became huge presented so many great opportunities for me, as I’ve been able to connect and collaborate with people I would never have imagined ever meeting! I’ve worked with a great range of brands, from Pepsi to Marc Jacobs, and loved working with everyone for different reasons. House of Holland have always been a real favourite, as Henry really liked and appreciated my work for what it is, so he holds a special place for me. I recently collaborated with the Australian designer Poppy Lissiman on a collection of clutches; we discovered each other via social media and things went from there! I knew instantly that our brand personalities were in sync. Sometime when I see a brand I just think YES, this is totally my style we are going to get along famously!”

THEWHITEPEPPER.COM

MY EXHIBITIONS

“My ‘Dolls House’ exhibition at KK Outlet in Hoxton last month was a crazy, whirlwind experience. Everything in the show was new minus 6 covers, and I only had a month from the gallery first getting in touch to the opening night. For years I’d wanted to do something with jackets, holograms and wallpaper, so this presented the perfect (although time-pressured!) opportunity for me to try everything. It was a crazy yet fun working process, with a fantastic team, and offered me a real opportunity to see what I’m truly capable of. Showing in Hoxton was a poignant moment for me as I lived and worked just down the road from the gallery for 5 years, and the show was a perfect goodbye to that chapter of my life as I relocated to my new studio space. I’m a big sucker for those kind of moments. Next is a brand new show at the House of Illustration in Kings Cross, which is a very tongue-in-cheek look at advertising, with large-scale pieces involving collage, illustration and I’m also bringing out my sewing machine. Better get cracking...”

Eyeball

“My friend Becky made this as part of her Don´t hug me I’m Scared’ series. It actually just rolled onto the shelf by accident, but I thought it looked great, and fit with my aesthetic, so there it has stayed! It’s always there keeping an eye on me.”

For Spring 15 we kept the nail art super simple with geometric varnish triangles for a cute dino claw effect. Perfect if you love clean, unfussy nail design, this cute detail creates instant impact whilst achieving a minimalist touch.

“I have a naughty habit of getting TOO creative, letting my imagination run wild and having to be reined in a little!”

Favourite part of your job? All the elements that require a lot of creativity, either designing this very magazine or whipping up brand new pieces of graphic design. I have a naughty habit of getting TOO creative, letting my imagination run wild and having to be reined in a little! But that’s how new and exciting ideas come to life. Where do you source inspiration? I’m always on the look-out for inspiration throughout the entire day, but I don’t really have particular go-to sources. My bad memory acts as an inspiration sieve, it

retains the things it likes the most. I know when I love a piece of inspiration as it communicates with me on a creative level. I like watching people; how they move, talk, act, and all their little ways, be it from a hairstyle to particular print, or right down to the crinkles on their socks! What’s been the highlight of being at TWP so far? Working on the in-house design prints for AW15. I have always been fascinated by how graphic design can be applied to textiles, but this will be my first real experience of the process. I’m looking forward to the first time I touch the pieces and seeing strangers walking in them - it will be a real rush!

85

Talk us through your typical day at TWP Every day, I get to the office around 9am, make loads of coffee and connect my laptop ready for the day ahead. I probably won’t move from my desk until lunchtime, my favourite time of day - I love food! After lunch until the end of the day at 6.30pm, my mind escapes and enters the world of graphics; making social media and website imagery, retouching photos, drawing up layouts, illustrating...every day is something different! Time flies when you enjoy your job like I do.

What’s in your wardrobe/describe your style? My wardrobe is mostly a big black spot, but lately I’ve been re-discovering my love of colours and twee things. I love mixing classic with crazy, offbeat pieces. What captures my attention in clothes is always the fabric, the cut and the hang of the garments , that’s how I decide if something’s for me. High-waisted culottes and wideleg trousers are my must-haves right now.

THEWHITEPEPPER.COM

MEET THE TEAM

“It was in art school where I discovered that graphic design and art direction were my biggest passions, and right now working at THE WHITEPEPPER I’m able to indulge in them every day”

THEWHITEPEPPER.COM

86

Your favourite ever WP piece? Undoubtedly the Black Leather Jacket which is coming for AW15, I will be wearing it every single month of the year no problem! Your background is in art/illustration, tell us more about that… I started studying Design and Publishing in Madrid and then jumped to art school where I started my art career path from scratch, playing a little trial and error along the way. It was in art school where I discovered that graphic design and art direction were my biggest passions, and right now working at THE WHITEPEPPER I’m able to indulge in them every day! I’ve never been a perfectionist when it comes to my style of art, but I knew graphic design was my calling as I think the trick is always knowing when and how a style matches with it’s purpose. What do you do in your spare time? I only moved to London a few months ago, and so I love to just go walking around the city, visiting museums, and rummaging in flea markets. If I’m at home, you’ll find me cooking, reading or watching Spanish or English film and TV. Right now I’m obsessed with Bored to Death, Fargo and The Knick. Also if I’m feeling creative, I love “destroying” books and old magazines to create something new. Where could we find you on a weekend? You could find me walking around N4 with my shopping trolley or in Hackney rummaging in charity shops looking for graphic materials. Last month I discovered Dance Tunnel club in Dalston and it’s my new favourite spot, so on a Friday or Saturday night post-11pm you can find me there with a beer in hand!

What’s your advice for someone wanting your job? For anyone wanting to enter the creative world of design or art, my advice is to never stop! Doing things for yourself is the best way to start working and discover your personal style. You might not like what you produce one month or even one hour later, but over time you’ll realise the elements of your work that define you. And remember that whatever your avenue or unique quality, there will always be someone out there who relates to it and recognises it, so just keep going.

“This series is called “VAC O”. It´s based around word play on lost identity and permanence. It´s going to be shown as part of an exhibition in Paris next month!” @yelenasmith

MEET THE TEAM

MY WORK “This is from a series called Golden, which I made whilst living in Madrid last year. It’s all about people, the relationship with the rescued memory and the value of spaces as a place of reunion.”

LENARA CHOUNDHURY Someone close to our hearts, photographer LENARA CHOUDHURY’s work goes beyond the usual constraints of portraiture. Candid and intimate, her captures of character come from those small, intimidate obstructions of the face; the touch of the mouth, the brushing of the fringe, the raise of the eyebrow. Piercing eyes and biting lips, each face tells a story of those perfect imperfections no one may otherwise see.
