Our WHITEPEPPER girl crush of the moment goes to ceramicist, maker and super sweetheart Charlotte Mei. We asked wonderfully talented Charlotte to spill the beans on her work space, quirky style and what’s in the pipeline for the future of this cutesy creative. MY SPACE I live and work in a school in West London as a ceramicist and maker. It’s a really good arrangement as I teach the kids five days a week and in return the school let me use their work space to do my art. Sometimes it’s a bit odd working and living here especially when the kids walk past my ‘office’ waving at me whilst I’m working. They call me Miss Mei which is cute but I am still trying to get used to it! Working here gives the students a different perspective and challenges the norms of thinking that when they leave school they will work in a shop or an office. It encourages them to think of other possibilities and ‘maybe I’ll be an artist’. Before I lived here, my workspace was in the Bussey Building in Peckham, which I shared with other makers I had met on my course at Camberwell College of Arts. We

formed a collective which we named Day Job as at the time we all had crazy day jobs and used to do our art during evenings and weekends. Then this opportunity to come and work at the school came up last summer and I’ve been here ever since! MY STYLE I don’t really feel like I am tied down to a particular style - styles go in and out of fashion. It’s the ideas that last. There are particular themes which I keep going back to and I take a lot of inspiration from cartoons and video games - I like the element of playfulness and humour. Visual jokes and puns are a big part of my art - I don’t know if I’m trying to make people laugh but I try to create stuff which makes me laugh and just see how it works. I think making ceramics was a way for me to

show I was serious about my work. If you draw a funny picture on a piece of paper people think ‘Yeah, that’s funny.’ But if you make it in porcelain, there’s an element of making something more finished and showing you really mean it. It gives a seriousness to something which is silly. MY WORK I never really saw Charlotte Mei as turning into a brand - it was more an art project which just got out of hand! It all started when I was leaving university and I made a collection of ceramics which I then displayed in my final show. I made hundreds of pieces and a few of them received recognition at the show and some people even wanted to buy them. Toastie is particularly popular. The first Toastie I sold was to Chrissie Macdonald, a London-based illustrator, whose work I have been a fan of for many years - I even studied her work at uni! After that, demand grew and people started to get in touch with me wanting to place orders so I became a bit of a Toastie factory for a while. One thing led to another and brands started to commission me for projects. My biggest job was for a department store in Tokyo who placed an order for 500 mini versions of Toastie. I remember sitting in my studio night after night with my Toastie shaped cookie cutter stamping out all the mini Toasties. MY EXHIBITIONS My first solo exhibition ‘Have Fun’ was at Box Park, Shoreditch in August. It was kind of what it says on the tin - an exploration of playfulness and poking fun at myself. The private viewing was on the Thursday and there were some amazing DJs such as Jackdansu and such a great turn out. Hopefully the success of Box Park will lead to more exhibitions and collaborations, and maybe even some shows. I never thought I’d see the day where I could make a living out of my artwork but here I am! Of course, it has its ups and downs but I’m living my dream!

Our Autumn collection reminisces on the simplicity and playfulness of our childhood doll’s house. So this year, with the new wardrobe that a new season brings, we’re not just playing dress up, we’re giving our homes a makeover too. From vintage chairs and elaborate ornaments to kooky paintings and dainty dolls, inject a touch of nostalgic kitsch into your humble abode with THE WHITEPEPPER’s interiors inspiration.

Guys, let’s just stop and take a minute to talk about British weather.

38

Okay, so it’s not exactly the first time we’ve stopped to talk about the weather but that is—as Brits—our thing. And as we head into winter, we’ll no doubt spend the whole of September complaining under drizzly skies about the briefness of the summer, before we move on to talking about snow and Christmas being on the way. A New Zealand friend sat me down last week to ask, in all seriousness, exactly why do we feel compelled to talk about the weather so. I couldn’t really explain, except for going off on a tangent about how I only got two BBQs in the park this summer, and only got round to wearing three of the five sundresses I bought new in May (because we all do that don’t we? Buy oodles of sun dresses and skimpy summer playsuits, all the while knowing that really, there’ll be only 2 days of the year warm enough to wear them.) I’m writing this with a hot water bottle pressed against my stomach, huddled in a jumper with the curtains shut. It’s August. It’s only in looking through my Instagram that I remember 2 days ago I was sweating buckets in the park in my bikini; 30 degrees it was. I guess that’s the issue really: we shop for the summer; we style ourselves for sun; then we have to think twice when it’s not at all like the forecast said. But with every grey cloud there’s a silver lining (so in Britain, there’s metres and metres of silver lining), that here being that unpredictable climes fuel our fashionable creativity. The cool combo of flippy dippy dresses paired with chunky roll-neck sweaters would never have happened if the forecast stayed as it meant to. Wellington boots and Raybans wouldn’t be a quintessential festival duo if it wasn’t for summer downpours. And Macs and miniskirts—a winning mix—would never have been invented by Twiggy if she lived in balmier climes. What I’m saying—yes, I’m actually saying it—is that I like our rain, our grey skies, and our odd day of sunshine, for all the great things they’ve done, and still do, for our fashion. Plus our sense of humour. The very best summer days are the ones where you’ve sat and sunbathed in the park all day, before the weather’s taken a total U-turn, it’s absolutely pelted with rain and you run home giggling and drenched, like something out of The Notebook. Socks and sandals are like a true epitome of British weather: all the optimism of warmth, plus the backup for when it’s not quite like we think. Whilst the prospect of winter might be a little dull, with it’s dark mornings and dark nights, drizzle, and clogged and clammy tubes on the commute, I’m holding out for those few magical winter days—my favourite ones of the year— when the sky is clear and the sun is beaming. And despite the frost, we all drag our legs out of hibernation, razor off the the winter fur that’s been growing, and revel in sporting bare legs with mini skirts and thick jumpers—some will even dig out sunglasses—for that one crisp winter’s day, before the rain comes back. Here’s to the sun. Here’s to the rain. Here’s to the unpredictable, that always has a way of making us smile.

THEWHITEPEPPER.COM

Lessons learnt dressing for British weather: 1. Never trust the Weather app on your iPhone 2. A thick jumper over a flippy skirt looks surprisingly good — particularly when block colours are involved. 3. A stylish rain mac is a very good friend 4. Socks and sandals are a godsend: warm but optimistic 5. Enough layers up top and you can wear bare legs any day of the year, regardless of how cold it is 6. The best thing about ice cold days are an excuse to wear over the knee boots 7. A grey day is instantly better with red lipstick

Where is your favourite place to shoot in your hometown? Mateo Arciniegas SoHo, New York - I love walking around that part of town and just finding interesting blocks with nice buildings that have some sort of geometric background which I can use as part of the image along with the model. Danielle Suzanne A short ferry ride away from the skyscrapers and noise, Toronto Island is my go-to for a bit of peace and quiet. At one end of the island brightly coloured cottages line narrow streets, while at the other a boardwalk passes through grassy sand dunes to the beach. Eeva Rinne One of my favourite things in my hometown Helsinki is the presence of water. Helsinki is located by the sea which gives an amazing sense of space and some great backdrops. You always get a different outcome depending the time of day, season or weather.

47

Mafalda Silva The Tropical Botanical Garden in Lisbon which is a magical garden near the river with tall trees, peacocks and a beautiful palace. Lisbon has a beautiful light throughout the whole year and this combined with a stunning nature makes it the perfect place to take photos. Igor Termenón Holyrood Park and Arthur’s Seat - it’s a group of hills located in the middle of Edinburgh. I love it here because when you’re in the middle of the hills you can’t see the city and it feels like you could be anywhere lost in nature. I’ve shot so many times here and I still find it inspiring every time I go for a hike.

London three-piece Fever Dream are everything you could imagine from a noisy shoegaze band : dorky, quirky and ferociously cool. We catch up with Adey, Cat and Sarah to chat about sober gigs, their upcoming tour and those excellent haircuts.

Tell us all about Fever Dream! How did you guys meet and what made you decide to form a band? Adey: We all met at university in Brighton over ten years ago, but it took three months of solid drinking in New York for Sarah and Cat to tell me I was going to be in a band with them. I didn’t have much of a choice in the matter. How romantic! Favourite part about being in a band? Cat: It would have to be all the opportunities to just hang out. We recently went on a tour and played a few shows with our mates, Evans The Death. When I got back everyone was asking about the shows, but I was more into the party times and all the awesome people we’d met. It’s not like we don’t live for the music, but we’ve always said we’d stop doing it if it stopped being fun. Do each of you have specific roles within the band? What’s your thought process when it comes to making your music? Adey: It’s a very democratic process - we don’t write outside of practice so we’ll jam different parts out until something sticks. Sometimes we can write two songs in one go, then go weeks without making anything of use. We’re hoping to write our second album in the space of two weeks in a remote Welsh cottage, without developing cabin fever in the process. Do you have any secret or mysterious ways that you warm up for gigs? Adey: We went out for a massive birthday curry in Leicester during our last tour, about half an hour before we were meant to be on stage. We ran up and down a ramp until we felt like we were going to throw up. Usually we just have a few beers. What’s been the highlight of your musical career so far? Sarah: Perhaps playing at 10am completely sober in the Brentwood Leisure Centre for Phoenix radio in Essex. It was both brilliant and bizarre. And we won over a few athletic/Sunday swimmer types which is always a bonus! You’re all based in East London - where are your favourite hangout spots? Cat: I have a stall at The Vintage Pop-up Market on Brick Lane, so I spend a lot of time in that area. I love Meraz Cafe for cheap, authentic Indian food, The Pride of Spitalfields is a classic East End Boozer where you’ll always have an eventful night and Close-Up Film Centre has a tiny cinema out the back, showing arthouse and classic films. Apart from that we seem to live at The Shacklewell Arms in Dalston.

“I’d recommend going on tour as much as you can...you can sample a different Wetherspoon’s every day of the week.” Sarah, you also juggle your music with being an illustrator - how’s it going? Sarah: It’s a toughy, as my illustration career is very important to me, but so is being in a band with my two best buddies. An illustrator’s life is quite a solitary life, so it’s quite refreshing to go out and play shows and meet people. However, it’s been difficult trying to finish my first graphic novel, Stan & Nan this year in between tours, but I’ve somehow managed it! Plus it seems that some Fever Dream fans like my comic books and my illustrations too which is nice as it means I can gain fans of my own practice through band too - so perhaps it’s the perfect combination! You’ve all got great hair - Is your image important to you as a band? Cat: Oh thanks! Our awesome friend/photographer Pierre Delpino cuts our hair and this is a recurring compliment which we’re happy to cultivate. It’s always been kind of a joke that at practise we would talk about music and hair, and it’s fun to play with looking kind of moody and deep, but really we’re just dorks. What’s in the pipeline for Fever Dream? Anything exciting coming up? Sarah: We’re about to embark on a two week tour with our Club AC30 labelmates Pinkshinyultrablast, culminating at the Rockaway Beach festival in Adey’s hometown of Bognor Regis. He’s probably going to cry with excitement... We’re also slowly working on our (bigger and better) second album. What’s your advice for someone wanting to pursue a career in music? Adey: We’re still trying, but so far I’d recommend going on tour as much as you can - it’s amazing how many friends you can make in such a short amount of time. And you can sample a different Wetherspoon’s every day of the week. Fever Dream are touring the UK at selected venues from 28th September - 8th October 2015. OUR KIND OF GIRL 63 THEWHITEPEPPER.COM

“I get a lot of inspiration from people on the tube, or literally anything I see or hear. London has so many opportunities and everyday can bring unexpected and exciting things. Because there are so many musicians in London, trying to make it as a musician is hard. It can be a bit annoying when you’re playing a gig in a pub when you know people aren’t really listening to your music. But there are so many interesting people and inspiring creatives to work with here so it has its good points too. It’s important to be confident on stage I always like to look cool but comfortable. My oversized denim shirt dress is a godsend! Lucky charms are cute, especially if you’re suspicious but I prefer wearing sentimental pieces such as my mum’s jewellery. I spent the whole of last year working on material for my new album which I’m releasing at the end of this year. If I’ve learnt anything it’s to do as much as possible with the time you have and don’t become too competitive in an already very cut-throat industry - it will taint your work.”

“It is so great to be working for a brand where I feel my designs and creativity compliment the VISION”

course, I said YES! A couple of months down the line, they got in touch again telling me there was a job vacancy for Design and Styling Assistant and would like to see my portfolio for an interview - and here I am!

A typical day for me at THE WHITEPEPPER consists of various creative jobs all packed into one day - just the way I like it. I usually arrive in the office around 8.45am and am immediately bombarded with emails from factories, all awaiting my reply - there is no better way to start the day than by being thrown in the deep end. Once i’ve ploughed through the emails, i put my creative head on and start planning all the flat styling shoots for our social media and website for the week ahead. This is a great way for me to be creative and have some fun with styling. The days always go by really quickly working here and before you know it, it’s lunchtime where i can catch up with the rest of THE WHITEPEPPER team and find out what is going on in other departments. I tend to dedicate my afternoons to all things design so this could be anything from researching concept ideas, designing for up and coming collections or working on the CAD designs for order sheets which are being sent to the factories.

Describe your style : My style is very much true to who I am as a designer. I love all things print, with polka dots being at the top of my list. I am also a big fan of colour and pattern - it’s important to have fun with fashion. When I was a child my mum used to dress me up in funny outfits like Mickey Mouse. It was only when I went to university that I realised that her cartoon fancy dress moments have had a big influence on my own designs and style as well - I am just as quirky and colourful as Mickey!

THEWHITEPEPPER.COM

Favourite part of your job : It’s impossible for me to name just one thing I love about my job, but it is so great to be working for a brand where I feel my designs and creativity compliment the vision. There is nothing worse than feeling like you are forcing your design process and creative thinking to fit in with an idea you don’t agree with. It should just feel natural and easy. You worked with us on our Autumn 15 collection where did you get your inspiration from? For the Autumn15 collection, all my inspiration came from my Final Major Project at university. The concept theme for my collection was inspired by the tennis spectator, so it was based around the idea of someone spectating at Wimbledon but not wanting to take the sport as seriously. The silhouettes are classic tennis-wear silhouettes but then the garments are made more fun and playful through the use of a humorous print design and colour way. Talk us through how you got your job here at TWP : As cheesy as it sounds - they found me! It’s pretty crazy how it all happened but technically Instagram got me my job. A friend tagged my name on a WHITEPEPPER Instagram post and a few hours later the Creative Director was messaging me asking if I would like to do a collaboration with the brand using my collection. Of

What sparked your interest in fashion? My interest in fashion was fuelled by my sister, who also studied Fashion Design at university. I loved being her little helper during her stressful deadlines, cutting, sticking, and researching images for her university projects.

Are there any types of clothes which you avoid wearing? I’m quite open to trying everything in terms of shapes and styles and my wardrobe is full of lots of different and sometimes eccentric clothing. The only thing i try to avoid is wearing all black - I think it’s a great look for a lot of people, it just doesn’t really suit me and my personality. I also hate see-through leggings, which are clearly a bit worn away - they are such a fashion faux-pas. Your favourite TWP piece from AW15 : The face print dresses are definitely up there with my favourites as they are my original designs. But I really like all of the collection, I think it’s a really strong season. I particularly like the prints which our Creative Director Yelena designed - they are great! What do you do in your spare time and where can we find you at weekends? I’m completely new to London so in my spare time you will either find me tagging along with my flatmates, work colleagues or cousin trying to discover the hidden gems of London. During weekends, you will either find me shopping for clothes I clearly don’t need and partying with my friends by night. When I was back home in Manchester, I used to visit my gran every Sunday without fail and still try to get back home as much as possible. We are quite a tight-knit family. What’s your advice for someone wanting your job? This is pretty standard advice but never give up on what you love and what makes you happy as your dream job is out there waiting for you. In the meantime, it’s really important to keep building up a portfolio of great experience as that is always invaluable to employers. It’s always good to keep practicing as well - I always work on my own designs in my spare time.
