INTERVIEW
MEETING
Whilst in Korea earlier this month we had the pleasure of working with the wonderfully talented Mr Oh, who shot our Winter 14 lookbook. Here we catch up with the brilliant Korean photographer to find out more about his life and work.
Images kindly provided by Mr.Oh
Amongst our favourite pieces of your work are those shot with Moon Kyu Lee, who modelled for our Winter 13 lookbook. You’ve also shot Moon Kyu for Indie and Contributor magazines; why do you feel she works so well? Moon Kyu is just perfect because, although she’s tall and thin, she isn’t stereotypically modelly, yet she has a special and unique quality to her. Plus, she breaks all the rules by being Korean and dying her hair bright blonde! I really like working with Asian models, yet the fact that
Moon Kyu is based in Paris adds a new and exciting element, which fascinates me. How has your personal photography developed over time? When I started out I was obsessed with images that documented an event or situation, grasping that opportunity to quickly capture something. This evolved into me looking at situations in a different light, showing alternative angles and twists, and making ordinary and everyday situations look more abstract and irregular. My work has now evolved to focus on concepts such as feelings, where I aim to create more calm and placid images, with portraits and other projects focusing on the individual, and the portrayal of emotions. Tell us about your favourite work so far.. I think the work I most enjoyed making would be my first ever photography projects, entitled ‘Hide & Seek’ and ‘Exit’. These projects represent my work at its most pure and organic, and have an innocent and naive feel. For ‘Exit’ I simply took images of my friends working in the fine art field, in and around Paris. ‘Hide and Seek’ was
my first ever project, and there was no real philosophy behind it. At the time I had a girlfriend whom, much to her despair, I simply just wanted to take pictures of. She hated this and actually some of the photos in the sequence are her hiding from the camera whilst I chase her because she hated being filmed! I enjoyed the role play element in this, and felt it became integral to the piece. What inspires you? My favourite photographers, Jeff Wall and David Hilliard are undoubtedly a source of inspiration, but I’m inspired by absolutely everything around me, and have recently been very inspired by my feelings. I get most of my ideas before going to sleep at night, and always jot down ideas on a memo pad beside my bed. As a brand we are hugely inspired by street-style. Where are your favourite places to photograph street style and what do you look for in your subjects? I don’t have a particular favourite place, but if forced I would say Milan because the landscape is quite bare, providing an excellent canvas to take clean and beautiful pictures. In terms of people, there is never a specific criteria, and I aim to capture character rather than clothing and trends. I want the person’s character to be the overwhelming aspect of the image.
33
What influence did Paris have? Originally I moved to Paris purely to study fine art, but actually the move ended up meaning much more than that. I realised in Paris that I could pursue photography as a career, whereas before it was simply a hobby. I met many amazing artists, whose work I truly admired and who came to recognise mine. Paris was a real stepping stone in my life, making me realise that happiness, rather than money, is truly the most important thing.
“ I want the individual’s character to be the overwhelming aspect of the image.”
INTERVIEW
Hi Jin, We’ve been fans of your work for a long time, when did you start taking pictures? I guess it was in high school; I didn’t specifically set out to become a photographer, but in school I always had a camera around my neck and constantly took pictures of my friends. After high school I came to Paris where I began shooting street style photography. I was actually much more interested in fine art, but photography soon overtook and became my main passion.
Whilst in Korea our creative director helped you out on your latest project; can you tell us a little about it? The working title is ‘Smile,’ and THEWHITEPEPPER.COM

INTERVIEW 34
THEWHITEPEPPER.COM
“I’m inspired by absolutely everything around me, and have recently been very inspired by my feelings.”
I ask strangers or people I come into contact with (for example, your creative director Yeon), to simply smile. The results are so far very thought-provoking; it’s interesting to see people’s responses. We also heard you are launching a magazine? I’m launching my own magazine named notable magazine, which is based on fashion, arts, and talent which I find interesting. The plan is to begin online, and later develop into print. Whilst in London you have so many readily-available art and pop magazines, they are still something of a rarity in Korea. I wanted to make a magazine of my own to fill some of that gap.

Fiona’s Hour
THEWHITEPEPPER.COM
Woman’s Hour are fast becoming the band on everyone’s lips. Dazed and Confused put their debut album ‘Conversations’ in their October Top 10, and quite frankly it became the office soundtrack to our Summer. What really caught our eye though is lead-singer Fiona Burgess, whose silky vocals and effortlessly cool androgynous style made her a firm WHITEPEPPER girl crush. We caught up with Fi ahead of Woman’s Hour’s first ever UK headline tour, one sunny afternoon on the roof terrace of Netil House. Fiona it seems like you guys have been crazy busy this Summer. What have you been up to? We’ve been playing loads and loads of festivals! We came off tour with Metronomy and went straight into playing Field Day, our first ever festival performance. Field Day is our fave! East London at its best, was it fun? Field Day is a festival we’ve all been to, and London feels like a second home to us, so it was actually quite daunting! Since then we’ve done festivals all over the UK and
Europe, adding bits and pieces to our live set each time. This summer we also started working with a drummer, which is a brand new thing to get to grips with. All in all we’ve been gearing up for our European headline tour! You hail all the way from Cumbria, in Kendal, but live in London. Was it an easy move to make? Yeah all the band lives down here, and for sure at the moment London is absolutely the place to be. I live in Shoreditch, Will and Fiona wears the Ivory Suit Twin Set
Nick live in Leytonstone and Josh lives in Highbury so we’re all based around East and North. Where are your favourite places to hang out in East? I LOVE Lardo for food, mostly as they do a Campari Spritz; only my favourite drink ever! The best pizza in the world is from Story Deli, which is always heaped with toppings and loads of rocket and salad; it’s more like a meal than a pizza. It’s at the very top of Brick Lane and the owner does an amazing job of keeping it quite
but for me personally, I really like getting ready for a performance, and putting on clothes that enable me to feel like I’m in character. It’s still being me, but I’m accentuating an aspect of my personality. I guess I have a bit more confidence with what I wear on stage, and I feel I can be a bit more outrageous. Planning my outfits is important; in the past I really wasn’t fussed and would turn up in anything, but that actually made me quite self conscious. I plan my outfits now, so that I can concentrate on singing well and enjoying the show!
now get to take it on a journey by touring it.
What’s it like being on tour with 3 boys? It’s actually 4 boys now with the drummer! Sometimes we have a female tour manager which brings the gender balance back in check, but for the most part there’s a lot of football chat, lad banter and lots of boys being boys. But they’re good fun, and we haven’t killed each other yet…
“I really like getting ready for a performance, and putting on clothes that enable me to feel like I’m in character.”
It’s weird, because when I left Kendal I craved anonymity. In Kendal when you walk down the high street everyone knows you, and if you do anything slightly different, it feels very radical. So in a similar way, being on stage in front of people you know, you feel like the smallest thing is amplified. It’s a challenge, but one which I enjoy. It’s always good to put yourself out of your comfort zone.
Is what you wear day-to-day and on stage very different? We feel your personality really shines through in your on-stage style... It’s something I’ve started thinking about more and more. In some respects, what we wear on stage reflects how we dress day-to-day,
Your album was released to rave reviews this Summer and you’re just about to head off on your first headline tour. How does it feel? It’s great that, after the rush of releasing the album and getting swept up in the promotion, we
How about shopping; we LOVE your style. Do you have any London favourites? I love COS as it’s so classic, plus & Other Stories, which is a bit cooler. I’ve got some amazing things from there and they do great shoes! I used to vintage shop a lot but I feel it’s become really expensive, and save it for finding unique and special pieces these days. At the higher end, Acne is always a safe bet, and I wear Moxham jewellery on stage. I love discovering new and upcoming brands, like Moxham, Marina London, and you guys! I currently want everything WHITEPEPPER.
We can’t wait to come and see you play Village underground in Shoreditch! Yeah, it’s a big one for us! We’ve never played there before, and I’m really looking forward to it but it’s also a big step, so we’re all quite nervous. Nerves are good, though, they prove that we really care. There’ll be a lot of familiar faces in the crowd, and that’s a really daunting thing; it’s more fearful to play in front of people that you know rather than a random crowd.
37
What are your tour essentials when you’re on the road? Good question! I actually have a “to pack, tour essentials” list on my phone. I always take my stage outfit, make-up, hair products, perfume (I HATE rocking up smelling like I’ve been in a van for 8 hours), toothbrush, a neck pillow and an eye mask, as I’m always snoozing! And, of course, my headphones.

PHOTOGRAPHY Liam Warwick in Wonderland Magazine Our Creative Director is obsessed with this little cutie. Step forward Daisy Davidson: Creative at Topshop, Studio Assistant at Ashley Williams, occasional model and full-time Harry Styles fangirl. We caught up with Daisy on the bus to a photo shoot – she’s always doing something, that girl…
What’s your fave thing about modelling? Well, I do enjoy the free grub! I also love having my make-up done, and learning about the different products and potions. I don’t wear make-up usually, so it’s interesting to see what I look like with all of this stuff on my face!
“I walked for Meadham Kirchoff at London Fashion Week; it had such a good, positive feeling about it.”
Who or what do you fangirl over? Harry frigging Styles – I mean, do I even need to explain?! Oh, and a close second would be Benedict Cumberbatch (mostly when he’s playing Sherlock.) I’m a manga nerd, so these go hand in hand… Lastly, how would you describe your style? My style is 80´s Chanel mixed with Japanese, Harajuku street style circa early noughties. I sometimes wear massive heels, but only if I’ve taken a few painkillers – I get grumpy in them otherwise! I love Japanese-inspired stuff and always have. When I was younger I would dress as a Gothic Lolita, and I don’t think that’s ever left me. Hence having short black hair that can be transformed into a huge Emo fringe if the occasion ever arises. Like thrashing around to Panic! At The Disco, for example.
Follow Daisy @lilmayodaisy THEWHITEPEPPER.COM
Where can we find you on a weekend? I’ve been working weekends for the past year, so I’ve forgotten how they operate! At the moment, you’ll find me at my local Oxfam in Putney. It’s such a laugh, and
Which is your favourite TWP piece and why? It would have to be the Egg Print Twin Set. I love a Twin Set; it’s the lazy girl’s way of coming up with a very quick outfit. Anything 60s
looking is also a winner. I have my eye on the Ivory Suit Twin Set, too.
49
You’ve been popping up all over the place in terms of modelling, what has been your favourite shoot so far? My favourite modelling work was for a show rather than a shoot. I walked for Meadham Kirchoff at London Fashion Week; it had such a good, positive feeling about it. Everyone was so excited about taking part, and I felt very cared for. The clothes were beautiful, of course. Oh, and the sandwich selection was top notch!
We love your style – let us into the best places to shop in London… I would totally recommend Oxfam in Putney. We get such good pieces in there, as everyone in the surrounding area is pretty well off; they can’t be bothered to eBay it, so they give it to us instead! This week, for example, we’ve had two Fendi tops and a brand spanking new D&G coat. As you do. I’m not much of a shopper (too much of a cheapskate…) but I’d always say TK Maxx and Bang Bang Clothing Exchange on Berwick Street in Soho.
“My style is 80´s Chanel mixed with Japanese, Harajuku street style circa early noughties.”
WE LOVE
Hey Daisy, tell us a little bit about yourself… Hello! I’m 22 and I’m a Scorpio, which is the least liked Star Sign. I have a very special doggy called Marvin, who I started off dog walking but we ended up adopting him. He’s a French Bulldog, and let’s just say he’s one sandwich short of a picnic – in the most adorable way possible! My other dog, Bronson, is a Puggle, and he’s a terror. And I have a bitchy cat, Pru, who hates everyone.
I love the mix of volunteers we get. If not there, you’ll find me in China Town at China MARKET –the best place for all of your plastic, Japanese-y goodness, and photo- booth requirements. I love eating hummus at Hummus Bros, although none of my friends like it, so it’s often a one-girl-job. And Pizza Hut is a must for delectable cookie dough. I always go to the one in Kingston, which means I get to visit the wonderful Bentalls shopping centre, too.
OUR KIND OF GIRL 50 THEWHITEPEPPER.COM
Chloé Wallace is our kind of girl. A 20 year old photo and videographer from Madrid; she’s smart, kooky, and has awesome style. Now based in the UK, we leapt at the chance to sneak a peek around Chloe’s south east London pad and delve into her world!
“I live in south east London with two designers, a digital communications manager, a performance artist and a fox. I love working in cafes, but I work mainly from my room, which is where I process my images and have my own space. It’s still under construction as I only just moved in, but I instantly put my posters up to feel at home. The big poster is from the movie Moonraker. I got it from the BFI a few years ago and I thought it was quite unique because not everyone knows that James Bond was once an astronaut (unlike me, who’s obsessed with outer space!) The other two I got recently from east London; I’m starting to collect vintage botanical drawings in any kind of format as I love how delicate and special the creatures look.” MY STYLE

lots of books at the same time, but the one in this image (left) is Love is a Dog from Hell by Bukowski, which I like to reread from time to time because it is so honest and passionate.”

“The tattoo on my neck says ‘L’écume des Jours,’ which is the title of a french surrealist book by Boris Vian. My mom read the book when she was 17 and decided if she ever had a daughter she would name her after the main character, Chloé. When I read it, it became my favorite
book, and I got this tattoo when I was 17 as a reminder of who I am, and my closeness to my mom. The tattoos on the backs of my ankles are a tiny spaceship and a planet, and I

MEET THE WHITEPEPPER TEAM...
Meet The Team: Fashion Design Assistant
Name: Lauren Dutton Age: 22 From: West Midlands Studied: Fashion Design, Rochester Lives: Hackney Wick
Talk us through your typical day at THE WHITEPEPPER? I wouldn’t say I have a typical day as every day is different! One day I could be researching and designing and the next I could be helping with a photoshoot, which is one of the perks of working in a small company as I’m able to help out in different areas. Favourite part of your job? Seeing what I design on paper come to life: from the process of getting inspiration to designing something for our customer, then seeing that person in my design.
Your advice for someone wanting your job? For someone wanting to pursue a career in fashion design my advice would definitely be to work hard and gain as much experience as possible. Any experience you gain in the industry is incredibly invaluable and will not only open you up to different experiences first hand, but also to contacts in different areas of the industry. 71
Where do you find inspiration? My inspiration mostly draws from the vast amount of blogs and tumblr pages I visit. Street style also plays a big part in where my inspiration comes from, as it’s an insight into how real people choose to dress and convey their personality; I find it very interesting as everybody’s personal style is so different.
Where could we find you on a weekend? On a weekend if I’m not in East, then you can usually find me in Essex adventuring around either a random car boot sale or down a country lane pub! I love carbooting as you never know what you might find and there’s always that saying ‘one man’s trash is another man’s treasure!’ I’ve found some really exciting stuff at car-boots, from an old pub chalk board to a fur coat so every time you go you really have no idea what you might end up walking away with. There are a few vintage finds I’ve found which have been great sources of primary inspiration for the next WP collection.
MEET THE WHITEPEPPER TEAM...
“My favourite part of my job is seeing what I design on paper come to life. ”
What do you get up to in your spare time? I wouldn’t say I have spare time as there’s always something I’m doing! Whether that’s on one of many fashion blogs getting inspiration, drawing or at my sewing machine.
What’s been the highlight of being at TWP so far? I wouldn’t say I have one particular highlight at TWP as everything I do is a highlight and something I enjoy doing. Being able to do a job I love and have worked hard for is a highlight in itself, and the rewards of people enjoying what I have helped create make it worthwhile.
Your favourite TWP piece? It would have to be the Midi skirt in Egg print. It’s a wardrobe staple that still gets me a lot of compliments. There are a few Winter and Party pieces that have caught my eye though; I’m so excited for everyone to see them!

What’s in your wardrobe / describe your style? My wardrobe is an array of 80’s vintage finds with many a WHITEPEPPER piece. I’m always on the lookout for a new vintage favourite to team with a staple WHITEPEPPER essential.

72 AW14/15 INSPIRATION
“Our inspiration for Spring 15 was Child’s Play, so the collection is all about childlike twists on key styles, with a focus on detailing and colour. The print jumpsuit is without a doubt my favourite piece, it’s a great shape which will see you through every season, but in a colourful dinosaur print! For summer we looked to the sea for inspiration; towards nautical themes and a colour palette of sea-like blue tones that are reminiscent of waves. I have two favourite pieces from this collection: the peplum shoulder dress as it’s a brand new shape for TWP, in a brand new in-house print, bringing an all round sense of freshness and making this a definite summer wardrobe essential! Another piece I love is our cross back spaghetti strap dress; it’s an easy to wear shape with a focus on detailing which I’m an massive fan of. ”
