Eating out this Summer? How kids are now eating healthier at restaurants

(BPT) - As many families make their travel and leisure plans this year, they are happily discovering that a growing number of restaurants - in their hometowns and at their vacation destinations - are offering more healthful and great-tasting menu options for children.

With consumers growing more interested in better-for-you menu items, restaurants are responding to the demand with offerings that families will enjoy.

It is widely known, and National Restaurant Association data confirmed earlier this year, that chefs and consumers are on the same page when it comes to better child nutrition at restaurants. Healthful kids’ meals have become a top trend.

Not only are restaurant operators increasingly committed to providing healthful meals for kids, they’re showing it in proactive ways every day. One example of that is the industry’s recent participation in the inaugural Kids Recipe Challenge. Held earlier this spring, the contest, created by the National Restaurant Association in partnership with McCormick For Chefs, the Food Away From Home Division of McCormick & Company, shone a spotlight on the foodservice industry’s commitment to providing healthful, flavorful menu options for children.

Flavor is often the missing link to healthy eating, so McCormick For Chefs, children’s nutrition advocate, was the perfect partner to support industry efforts to raise awareness about developing kids’ meals that are nutritionally balanced and great tasting. Working to inspire healthy choices through flavor, the Kids Recipe Challenge showcased how foodservice professionals can easily develop wholesome recipes that promote memorable eating experiences for kids.

Chefs and operators from large national chains like Qdoba Mexican Grill, to smaller independent operations like Boston Lobster Feast, actively competed in the challenge highlighting innovative ways to enthuse younger diners about eating well.

All of the challenge’s recipes were required to meet nutrition criteria set forth by the National Restaurant Association’s Kids LiveWell initiative, which is based on the 2010 USDA Dietary Guidelines. The program’s goal is to increase the consumption of fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains and low-fat dairy, while limiting unhealthy fats, sugar and sodium.

Judged by a combination of industry experts and 30 prospective kid customers, the contest’s “industry tested, kid approved” approach resulted in the professionals selecting the challenge’s finalists and the kids choosing the ultimate winners. Winners in four categories earned bragging rights and were honored at the recent National Restau-

rant Association Show in Chicago.

The winning recipes incorporated some nutritious and innovative ideas, such as using spaghetti squash instead of regular spaghetti noodles, serving broccoli and sweet potatoes as sides, preparing chicken fingers coated in lightly salted potato chips instead of traditional breading, and substituting whole wheat tortillas for white flour tortillas or bread for wraps.

The Kids LiveWell initiative, which debuted nearly two years ago in July 2011, started with a handful of participants, but today boasts a membership of nearly 140 restaurant brands in over 40,000 locations that are committed to providing more healthful meals for children. In fact, restaurants in every state throughout the country now offer good-tasting choices as part of the initiative. Healthy meals can increasingly be found not only at independent restaurants, but also national chains and even museums and theme parks.

Launched in collaboration with a team of registered dietitians from the San Diego-based Healthy Dining Nutrition Consultancy, Kids LiveWell menu options can be found on Healthy Dining’s HealthyDiningFinder.com or by downloading the free Kids LiveWell smartphone app.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- It’s hard to have a hands-down, class-of-the field car in a restrictor-plate race, but don’t tell Jimmie Johnson, who dominated at Daytona Saturday night in uncharacteristically decisive fashion -- and reached another milestone at the World Center of Racing.

In a wild race that featured two massive wrecks on the last lap alone, Johnson beat Tony Stewart to the finish line in the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway to record the first season sweep of NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races at the 2.5-mile tri-oval since Bobby Allison accomplished the feat in 1982.

As Johnson crossed the line at the end of a green-white-checkered-flag finish, the second of the two multicar accidents erupted behind him. Kevin Harvick stayed in front of the melee to run third, followed by Clint Bowyer and Michael Waltrip.

“Glad I was ahead of all the chaos,” said a relieved Stewart, who rode in the back for much of the evening before making his move to the front in the closing laps.

Johnson was ahead of the chaos, too, and above the fray -- head-and-shoulders above it. Driving a No. 48 Chevrolet SS nicknamed “White Lightning” for its blue-onwhite Lowe’s paint scheme, Johnson led 94 of 161 laps and executed key restarts flawlessly as the leader late in the race.

The victory was Johnson’s fourth of the season -- tying Matt Kenseth for most in the series -- and the 64th of his career. He leads second-place Bowyer by 49 points in the series standings with eight races left before the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup field is set at Richmond.

“Had a great horse to ride; got White Lightning in Victory Lane,” Johnson said after climbing from the car. “It’s tough to YOU” [dominate] at a plate track. Especially with how tight the rules are. I think I showed strength early, and a lot of guys were willing to work with me and help me through situations.

The accident stopped the race for eight minutes, 53 seconds while track workers picked up the debris. Johnson led the field to another restart on Lap 154 and two laps later, Ambrose, running third, pinballed off Johnson’s No. 48 car and knocked the No. 5 Chevrolet of Kasey Kahne into the inside backstretch wall to cause the race’s sixth caution.

“Yeah, we didn’t win,” said Harvick, who restarted from the inside lane, beside Johnson

Busch rallied to finish 12th despite being a victim of the last-lap crash, but Truex, who cracked the top 10 in points after winning at Sonoma to break a 218race drought, fell out of the race in 41st place and dropped back out of the top 10.

That set up the greenwhite-checkered finish that took the race one lap past its scheduled distance of 160 laps.

Harvick, who thought he was in excellent position for the final restart, was clearly disappointed with his third-place run.

“Gosh, growing up in Southern California and watching Bobby Allison, and I remember where I was the day [Bobby’s son] Davey passed away (after a 1993 helicopter crash at Talladega),” Johnson said. “That’s how much the Allison family meant to me.

Goehring sees potential in corn breeding project BISMARCK – Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring says a major research effort to develop corn hybrids for the northern U.S. and southern Canada should result in new opportunities and options for North Dakota farmers.

“Monsanto is now rolling out its Canada Corn Expansion Project,” Goehring said.

“The company plans to spend $100 million over the next 10 years to develop new varieties of earlier maturing corn hybrids more suited to our climate.”

The project includes a sustained breeding effort, involving extensive field testing, agronomic training for farmers and others within the agriculture industry; market-

ing and agronomic support.

Goehring said Monsanto’s target area for the project is mostly in southern Canada, but includes several U.S. states, including the northern two-thirds of North Dakota.

“The company has already established a corn breeding station near Fargo and another in Manitoba, just north of the North Dakota line,” he said.

“I expect they will soon be contacting farmers to participate in technology development trials.”

Goehring said the availability of hardier, earlier-ripen-

ing hybrids should provide farmers with more options in determining their crop rotation.
