So said Ronald Reagan in his 1986 message to Congress vetoing the “sweeping and punitive sanctions” Congress was seeking to impose. Reagan equated the sanctions to “declaring economic warfare on the people of South Africa.”

His Treasury Secretary James Baker said Sunday that Reagan likely regretted this veto. But having worked with the president on his veto message and address on South Africa, I never heard a word of regret.

Nor should there have been any. For in declaring, “we must stay and build not cut and run” from South Africa, Reagan, whose first duty was the defense of his nation in the Cold War with the Soviet empire, saw not only the moral issue but the strategic imperative.
Reagan Was Right on South Africa
In 1986, there were 40,000 Cuban troops in Angola, where South Africa was a fighting ally and backer of anti-Communist Jonas Savimbi.
“I am totally opposed to disinvestment ... primarily for a moral reason. Those who will pay most grievously for disinvestment will be the black workers of South Africa. Africa as a prelude to a final climactic struggle for power.” In his speech Reagan called specifically for Nelson Mandela’s release, and the release of all political prisoners. Not for four years would Mandela be let go. But when he was, he, like Reagan, recognized that just as Xhosa and Zulu built South Africa, so, too, had 5 million Boers and Brits. And peace between them -- reconciliation, not reprisals, not revenge -- was essential if the promise of the country was to be realized. Undeniably, the American right was suspicious of Mandela and an ANC that condoned and practiced terrorism in the struggle for power, and aligned with enemies like Moammar Gadhafi and Fidel Castro. Yet, in the last analysis, Ian Smith, the World War II Spitfire pilot and last ruler of Rhodesia, got it right: “I was right about Mugabe, but wrong about Mandela.” As for Reagan’s veto, issued in the face of a certain override during a major epidemic of moral posturing, it was both courageous and correct. No regrets needed. Patrick J. Buchanan is the author of “Suicide of a Superpower: Will America Survive to 2025?”

I’ve noticed a disturbing trend of late. The exercise bike I purchased for all the right reasons -- to inject some heart-healthy cardiovascular exercise into my day, to help me attain the inner peace and tranquility that comes with regular exercise, because it was on sale -- has turned into an expensive and not very comfortable couch. I do not feel good about this. To wit: I recently found myself sitting on it, not pedaling, watching “Say Yes to the Dress” on my iPad with tears streaming down my face.
time at my desk and calling it work, I could waste that same time on the bike and call it work plus exercise. I was beginning to understand why celebrities like Jimmy Kimmel install a treadmill-desk in their office.
I thought I’d hate having the bike in the office because we don’t have a TV in the office -whatever would I do to pass the time while riding? But it turned out that I loved it. The proximity to my desk made me feel like I was able to get work done and exercise at the same time. Instead of taking a break from working to commit a full hour to exercise, as I’d been doing when the bike was in the living room, now I could grab whatever I was planning to peruse at my desk (a quick glance at the action piles here would suggest I was planning to peruse old envelopes with notes scribbled on them, a box of thumb tacks, dog treats, business cards, a photo from a friend’s son’s “Call of Duty”-themed Bar Mitzvah, 8,000 Post-it notes, bottle caps, a nail file and an old iPhone case) and instead peruse it on the bike. Now I was really maximizing my productivity! Instead of wasting
But all of this wouldn’t be a problem if the timer on the bike kept going whether I was pedaling or not. Then I could just cheat myself of the benefits of exercise but be in and out in an hour. Instead, the bike pauses while I pause, so an hour of exercise takes months.
So that was going swimmingly -- the tight buns were nearly in reach and my fiance was pretending he wasn’t distracted by the reflection in his computer screen of someone in his periphery huffing and puffing and reading envelopes. But then I made an upsetting discovery: I can’t think It hasn’t always been this way. When I first and move at the same time. I’d actually realized got the bike, I’d set the timer for an hour and then this a while ago, but forgotten. When I’m walking ride it for an hour. It was glorious. It went exactly and talking on my cell phone and someone asks how it was supposed to go. At this point the bike me a question that requires some thought, I have was set up in the living room and for distraction to stand still to answer. It doesn’t really bother me, while riding, I’d watch TV or listen to the radio. but it does bother the people directly behind me Then, in preparation for houseguests arriving, we and the people I’m walking with. Well, suddenly, moved the bike into the office, lest our friends and I found myself on the bike, checking my emails family get wise to the fact we’re exercising and run and holding still when I’d get one I had to think out and buy a bike of their own to get in shape about. For me, apparently, thought is the enemy of faster than we would. motion. No wonder stupid people love fitness!
And this was before I realized the best way to pass time on the bike, and also with friends and family, while watching TV and during conversations, is to play a diabolical game called “Candy Crush.” Now I hop on the bike, set it for an hour, begin playing “Candy Crush” and stop pedaling within the first five minutes. If this keeps up, I will spend 2014 trying to complete an hour I set on the bike before Thanksgiving 2013. I guess the answer is to just set a kitchen timer. Obviously.

Motor Trend Names Ram1500 as 2014 Truck of the Year RAM 1500 Outclasses Competition with the Fuel Economy, Torque, Style, adn Amenities to satisfy the most demanding truck Buyers
The announcement was made at the Chrysler Group LLC Warren Truck Assembly Plant in Michigan, the birthplace of Ram Trucks. A full report on Motor Trend’s comprehensive Truck of the Year testing will be featured on MotorTrend.com and in the February 2014 issue of Motor Trend. Nine Truck of the Year contenders were put through an extensive battery of testing designed to evaluate virtually every aspect of each vehicle. In addition to the 2014 Ram 1500, the judges examined other allnew or significantly updated trucks the industry produced this year: the Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, Ram Heavy Duty, and Toyota Tundra pickups; and the Ford Transit Connect, Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, Nissan NV200, and Ram ProMaster vans.

After delivering observed fuel economy of 15 mpg under extreme testing at Continental’s proving grounds, the EcoDiesel continued to impress during the Real MPG test loop, returning the following frugal stats: 19/26/21 mpg city/highway/combined for the Laramie Longhorn Crew Cab 4x4 with a 3.92 rear axle and an even more notable 18/28/22 for the Lone Star Crew Cab 4x2 with a 3.55 rear axle.
The Ram’s optional air suspension system also scored high marks in Engineering Excellence, as it delivered a compliant ride and commendable handling no matter the terrain. ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19):
Passions may run high as a friend, love interest, or partner who’s normally willing to compromise turns out to be looking out for himself or herself. The atmosphere could be quite competitive this week, although a compromise should be possible. The Quarter Moon in Pisces may bring a crisis of beliefs, which can be resolved if you take the more daring option. Meanwhile, emotional crosscurrents caused by a potent aspect may mean you’re unsure whether to take a risk or hold back.
TAURUS (Apr 20 – Mar 20)
Creative differences at work could limit your effectiveness, yet you may be so smitten with a new romantic paramour that you hardly notice. An attraction may sizzle with an earthy passion, though the one you have the hots for may currently have only platonic feelings for you. You might work very patiently to enhance a powerful connection that could have a business or romantic outcome. It might also help to listen to those intuitive hunches - you could snap up a lucrative deal by doing so.

Perhaps you’re itching to take the initiative, but you may have trouble deciding which direction to take. Give yourself plenty of time to sort things out, especially as a tendency to make a decision on the spur of the moment could be a game changer. However, you seem willing to put in a lot of effort concerning one project, especially as it could bring financial rewards if you do it well. It’s worth attending to the details, as you could benefit in so many ways if you get this right. Intense passions may animate you concerning a relationship. However, this isn’t the time to withdraw but rather to share your feelings with a trustworthy partner or love interest. Getting things off your chest may help avoid intense emotional struggles, including possessiveness or jealousy. There’s a lot going on in your home zone with Mars stirring things up. However, it’s a great opportunity to clear out clutter, get on with home projects, and generally spruce things up for the festive weeks ahead.
The Quarter Moon encourages caution regarding anything to do with business or speculation. If you find yourself in an edgy situation, follow your instincts for best results. Meanwhile, moving out of your comfort zone and doing something you’ve never attempted before may mean you cross paths with someone you could find instantly attractive. Conversation may sparkle, which might encourage you to ask the person on a date. A positive outlook suggests that this is the week to start decorating and getting organized for the festivities ahead. You might even feel like coordinating an impromptu get-together to get in the mood. Shopping may be another activity that you could get deeply involved in when Mars stirs up your personal financial zone. Planning could be crucial to surviving this and the weeks ahead and ensure that you still have cash in your pocket. Your social life continues to be busy. Look out for an unexpected visitor, too.

A positive link concerning career and personal finances suggests that you may be offered a job, contract, or lucrative deal that might help you feel more secure regarding the future.
SCORPIO (Oct 23 – Nov 21):
A Quarter Moon could push you to explore a creative project that you’ve had difficulty starting. Neptune in Pisces reveals that artistic abilities may be showing up - it’s just a question of making use of them. You could have an exhibition up and running if you’re willing to take action on a daily basis. This isn’t the time to keep a low profile. Show the world how talented you really are! SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21): You seem to be in a convivial mood with Mars just newly in your social zone and Mercury and the Sun in your sign to give you a pleasant boost. With the festive season on its way, you may be busy arranging get-togethers, parties, and celebrations with the aim of helping people have as much fun as possible. An electric connection suggests that a meeting with someone on your wavelength could highlight romantic possibilities. It might not last long, but it could be a lot of fun while you’re together. CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – Jan 19):
The Sun in your spiritual zone suggests that you’re now in a natural cycle in which it helps to take time out and relax. Use this opportunity to reflect on what you’ve achieved and your goals for the weeks and months ahead. A potent Jupiter/Saturn link could highlight a connection that could turn into a fruitful collaboration. This might have more of a business- or work-related quality about it, and could be an association that you greatly relish.

Column Jim Mullen This morning my computer told me it was out of memory, that it couldn’t save one more byte until I deleted some files. Did I mention that my machine’s got a ton of memory? There’s no way I could have used all that memory in only a single lifetime. Where did it all go? I remember having a discussion years ago with a business owner who was having a hard time deciding whether he should buy a computer with 10 or 20 megabytes, because the difference was thousands of dollars. The cheapest iPhone has 1,600 times that much memory and it can make phone calls and run “Angry Birds,” so I thought the memory problem had been solved. For years, I’ve been adding family photos and vacation pictures to my hard drive without a problem. It never complained when I would upload 300 photos of the Thanksgiving Day parade. It never said I was getting close to running out when it automatically started sucking pictures off my smartphone -- pictures I shoot through the car window, pictures of funny bumper stickers, pictures of things in stores I might want to buy someday. If you’ve got a camera, you might as well use it; it’s not as if you have to spend money developing pictures anymore. You simply post them to Facebook or email them to friends. Who needs physical pictures of the grandkids? Just pass your phone around.
The Village idiot A Picture’s Worth a Thousand Kilobytes many videos of it there would be if cellphones had existed then. A hundred? A thousand? It used to be rare to see a shot of a tornado on the nightly news, or cars sliding down an icy highway during a winter storm. Now we expect not just to see one video of a disaster, but lots of them. If something weird or unusual happens, someone with a phone will be sure to record it. Photographs aren’t just for weddings, vacations, babies and birthdays any more. There are millions of people out there that take pictures of the food on their plates before they eat it. You could flip through a photograph album of families in the days of film and rarely see a picture of the family pet. How many pictures and videos of cats and dogs are out there now? But when I first started taking digital pictures, they would take up 300 to 700KB of memory. The pictures I take with my new tablet take up 2.6MB of memory -- four or five times as much memory per picture. Sure, they’re much better, but one of these pictures couldn’t have fit on one of those not-so-old 3 1/2-inch floppy discs. Which explained the strange “thank yous” I was getting after emailing 150 pictures of my vacation to my nearest and dearest.

Boat owners are reminded that 2014 is the first year of a new three-year registration period, and with it comes an increase in license fees passed during the 2013 legislative session. Effective Jan. 1, the price to register motorboats under 16 feet in length, and all canoes, increases from $12 to $18, motorboats from 16 feet to less than 20 feet in length from $24 to $36, and motorboats at least 20 feet in length from $33 to $45. As part of the legislation, hunting and fishing license fees will increase April 1.
