ND Tourism offer $750,000 grant for developement

Bismarck, N.D. – North Dakota Tourism is offering a grant to one or more new tourism attractions that can bring more visitors to North Dakota. This program is made possible by a one-time appropriation of $750,000 in funds during the 2013 North Dakota legislative session.

How to keep a speeding ticket out of your summer plans

(BPT) - Want to know how to avoid a speeding ticket? Easy - don’t speed. But even the most law-abiding drivers with flawless records can make mistakes and find themselves pulled over. In fact, 34 million people in the United States receive speeding tickets each year, according to the National Motorists Association. A ticket can raise insurance rates and tarnish your driving record, according to FindLaw.com, the nation’s leading website for free legal information. If you get arrested or fined for other traffic violations, those tickets can

your chances of driving away with a ticket increase.” Here are some additional tips from FindLaw.com on how to avoid a speeding ticket. Watch for posted speed limit signs. According to a 2013 survey by Insurance.com, the top excuse for speeding is, “I didn’t see the sign.” The safest way to avoid a speeding ticket is to carefully watch posted signs and not exceed the limit. Even five miles per hour over the speed limit can land you a ticket - particularly near schools, road construction zones and other hotspots where police try to increase safety. Give yourself plenty of time. If you’re running late, you’re more likely to speed. One simple trick you can do to build in some travel time is to set your house clocks a few minutes ahead. Remember, you’ll arrive even later if you get pulled over. Keep a clean driving record. Police cars are often equipped with computer systems that allow law enforcement to instantly look up your driving record. A driver with a clean record is more likely to be let off with a warning than one with several traffic violations.

lead to stiffer fines Stay off your cellphone. Cellphone use is legal in some states and illegal in others, but distracted driving should always be avoided. Avoid speed traps. Speed limits typically drop when you approach a small town or city. That’s prime real estate for speed traps. Police often use highway overpasses, bridges or medians with a clear view of oncoming traffic to hunt for speeders. Don’t stand out. Drivers who go too fast, swerve or aggressively pass other drivers are more likely to draw the attention of the police. Move over. After using the left lane to pass a car, move back over to the right lane. Cars that continue to pass other cars while in the left lane are easy targets for police. Also keep in mind that in some states, the left lane is only for passing. Cooperate with the police officer. Being cooperative and respectful toward the police officer who pulls you over is one of the best ways to avoid a speeding ticket. It also can help defuse a potentially stressful situation. If you are pulled over, start by turning off your car, put away your cellphone and place your keys on the dashboard and your hands on the wheel in the 10 and 2 o’clock position to show the officer that you aren’t doing anything illicit before he or she arrives. Taking off your sunglasses also can be a show of respect. If it’s nighttime, turn on the interior lights of your car.

“Always cooperate with law enforcement officers,” Cosley says. “They’ve heard every excuse in the book. If you immediately Save your arguments for traffic court. Junior races with heavy heart after death of uncle Contributed | David Caraviello, NASCAR.com NASCAR’s 20th event at the Brickyard was barely underway when the red, white and blue race car pulled unexpectedly onto pit road with what the driver correctly suspected was a loose wheel. But that mechanical issue was far from the only difficulty Dale Earnhardt Jr. overcame Sunday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Randy Earnhardt, brother to seven-time champion Dale Earnhardt and uncle to the sport’s current most popular driver, died Sunday at the age of 60 after a long battle with cancer. A close confidante to the elder Earnhardt, Randy helped manage Dale Earnhardt Inc. and played a role in shaping Earnhardt Jr.’s early racing career. The driver of the No. 88 car finished sixth Sunday at Indianapolis despite competing with a heavy heart. “It was really tough,” Earnhardt said of his uncle’s death. “He helped me through a lot of challenges when I was trying to become a race car driver. He was there when I started driving late models, and I went through the whole process of racing with Tony (Eury) Sr. and all them, and into the Bud car, and Randy was always there. I hurt for my (grandmother) and Randy’s brothers and sisters …. It’s just very, very sad. But I’m glad his suffering is over with. But he’s going to be missed. He was an awesome dude. Such an awesome guy.”

you’ve got something serious happening, you come in,” Earnhardt said. “It’s dangerous staying out there. You’re going to hit the wall or wreck some other people if you do that. It’s a long race. We had an early chance to fix that, and that’s fine. And it gives us an opportunity to try some different strategies that worked out for us.”

“I think it panned out like it probably should have,” Letarte said. “It’s the strategy to win the race, kind of. We were running (14th); when we went to that strategy, we ran sixth. I don’t think we were going to drive to sixth. Nobody was going to drive to sixth today. … I look up there and I think our strategy worked. The No. 88 team needed a break -- which it caught on Lap 58 when Timmy Hill stalled out, bringing out a caution that left Earnhardt in 14th and as the last car on the lead lap. “Basically, we have the Nationwide race (left), starting 14th,” the always-upbeat Letarte said over the radio. “First two runs were just practice.”

Indeed, everything changed for Earnhardt after that. When Jeff Burton busted a transmission to bring out another caution, driver and crew chief discussed their options: come in and take two tires, or stay out. They agreed unanimously on the latter. “I think that’s the chance to “It’s rare, but mistakes happen. Menard, Denny Hamlin, Kevin Harvick and Brad Keselowski -- conceded to the realities of fuel mileage and sacrificed track position for gas. Earnhardt’s strategy got him as high as sixth, where he stagnated trying to chase down Matt Kenseth.

“Either running out of gas or had an engine problem those last two or three laps,” Earnhardt called it. “… Car just quit running.” But the resulting sixth-place finish, coming on the heels of last year’s fourth-place result at the Brickyard, still gave him consecutive top-10s at Indianapolis for the first time in his career. Earnhardt also maintained his fifth-place standing in Sprint Cup points.

“He kept things together,” Earnhardt said of his uncle. “He was … mainly in charge of just where every part and nut and bolt (were), being accountable for everything. And after the racing sort of left the race shop -- after I left and everything kind of went away -- he stuck around. He was loyal to Dad, and really looked after everything that was there, that was my father’s, that would have been important to him as far as material things. Randy really looked after that. It’s just tough. It’s part of life and it’s hard to get used to. I’m just glad his suffering’s over with. He was having a really tough time, and I loved him dearly and will miss him a lot.”

IN THE GREEN Kasey Kahne (Change: 10th to 9th) Kasey Kahne is a recent addition to the top 10, making his way into a guaranteed Chase spot just last weekend. This week, after finishing third at Indianapolis, he was able to take one more spot. Kahne is now sitting just one point behind eighth-place Greg Biffle, who has looked vulnerable lately with four consecutive finishes outside the top 10. Jeff Gordon (Change: 12th to 10th) Gordon may not have gotten that fifth win at the Brickyard, but his top-10 finish was enough to bring the four-time Sprint Cup Series champion into a top-10 points position. Without any wins this season, Gordon needs to stay there, or win, to make the Chase. Only five points behind Kasey Kahne and six behind Biffle, Gordon could continue to move up with more strong showings. Ryan Newman (Change: 19th to 16th) While Newman didn’t do much to cut the points differential between himself and leader Jimmie Johnson -- Sunday’s win brought his deficit from 209 to 206 -- his Chase hopes just became a bit more realistic. He’s now battling team owner Tony Stewart and Martin Truex Jr. for a Wild Card bid, and only needs to make up 20 points to match 12th-place Truex. IN THE RED Martin Truex Jr. (Change: 11th to 12th) With Ryan Newman putting a check in the win column and moving up in the standings,

it’s time to play defense for Truex. Despite his 11th-place finish at Indianapolis, Truex still fell in the standings, showing finishes outside of the top 10 may not cut it as the end of the season nears. Passing Stewart, who only sits four points ahead of Truex, would offer even more of a buffer should Newman continue to perform well.

chance to ping-pong right back into the top 10 next week.

Jeff Burton (Change: 17th to 20th) After an impressive third-place finish at last weekend’s Camping World RV Sales 301, Burton jumped four places in the standings. The momentum didn’t carry over to Indianapolis, though, as Burton’s car came to a halt en route Brad Keselowski (Change: 9th to 13th) to the garage.
