WSC to Host 5-Star Customer Service Seminar

WILLISTON, N.D. – Like it or not, customer service in the Bakken region is challenging due to the extreme and rapid growth of our region. Of course there are still businesses out there providing top-notch service, but the turnover rate, intense need for products and service, and inability to fill open positions has left most of us unable to provide the customer service we once could. Kostas Voutsas has been teaching Management and Human Resource courses for 17+ years. He is a tenured Professor of Business at Dickinson State University (DSU) at the Bismarck campus. He is also an author, a corporate trainer and keynote motivational speaker covering topics in diversity, customer service, workplace conflict, and more. “No matter what you do or who you serve, customer service is a big piece of every business,” states Director for Marketing, Kayla McKeil. “It’s [customer service] something that we always strive to do better and if we were interested in it, we thought other companies in the community might be too.”

The Five Star Customer Service Seminar will be held on the WSC campus on Monday, August 19 in the Teton Grill. The event will run from 4 - 5:30pm and will cost $39 per person or $25 per person for groups of four or more. In this seminar, Voutsas will use real-life-examples of poor customer service. His humorous and exciting delivery will have illustrated how to identify the needs and expectations of internal & external customers;

& develop a personal strategy for improving oral & written communication. To register, call 701.774.4235. If there are any additional questions regarding the Five Star Customer Service Seminar, please contact Kim Wenko at 701.774.6236 or kim.wenko@ willistonstate.edu.

Why Air Conditioning Costs are Heating up

THE WILLISTON REVIEW

BOT

(BPT) - You might wish that summer could go on and on - until it comes time to recharge your air conditioning system. The cost of the common refrigerant R-22 (also known as Freon), widely used in residential air conditioning systems, has already increased by more than 400 percent in the past 18 months and is expected to go even higher, making air conditioning repairs more costly for many. R-22 has been the refrigerant of choice for residential heat pump and air conditioning systems for more than four decades, but it has been identified as having a negative environmental impact, including contributing to ozone depletion. Under EPA regulations, R-22 is being phased out, with production totally prohibited after 2020. This has added new considerations for homeowners who are considering whether to repair or replace an air conditioning unit. For instance, some refrigerant manufacturers have begun selling cheaper alternatives to R-22, often referred to as “drop-in” replacement refrigerants.

“Lennox, one of the leading air conditioning manufacturers, has conducted research that shows these cheaper alternate refrigerants are not compatible with the lubricating oil used in R-22 units,” says Dave Moody, director of marketing for Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning. “Recharging older air conditioners with these alternative refrigerants may actually damage the system and void your manufacturer’s warranty. As a result, we’ve instructed our 2,500 technicians to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations and use only R-22 when they recharge R-22 systems.” Moody also points out that reclaimed and recycled R-22 is expected to be available to repair existing systems after production ceases in 2020, but as the supply of new R-22 refrigerant continues to be reduced, costs of both new and recycled R-22 refrigerant will increase significantly. All new air conditioning systems now use a more environmentally friendly refrigerant, R410A.-These newer systems offer many benefits, including greater energy efficiency, longer warranty periods and quieter operation, and may prove to be the wiser investment when homeowners are faced with repairing an older system that uses R-22 refrigerant. The Service Experts website at www.serviceexperts.com offers an interactive tool that allows homeowners to see how much they can save on utility bills by year based on the energy-efficiency rating of different new systems. “There is no one-size-fits-all answer about whether to repair or replace your R-22 AC,” says Moody. “It really does depend on the individual family, their home, their lifestyle and their budget. Service Experts technicians are trained to spend considerable time working through all these factors with our customers and help them make the most informed decision, and we’re happy to answer homeowner questions on this topic.”

But alternatives are cheaper only in the short run.

THE WILLISTON REVIEW

It’s up to everyone to take action to help protect our nations’s waterways (BPT) - Did you know that the average American uses 2,000 gallons of water a day - twice the global average? Water is hidden in diets, in the energy used and the products purchased. Every pair of jeans worn or hamburger consumed is created using water in some capacity. That’s why water conservation, no matter where you live, is a global necessity. The Colorado River brings this global issue home. Stretching across seven states, it serves more than 30 million people-- or nearly 10 percent of Americans - for their freshwater needs. But it no longer reaches the sea, with the last 90 miles nearly all dried up. In fact, it was named the “Most Endangered River in America,” by conservation group American Rivers. Many businesses and organizations are setting up water conservation projects and asking for your help for the Colorado River,

among other water efforts. Silk(R), the brand known for its best-selling soymilk, almondmilk and coconutmilk, has joined forces with National Geographic Society, Bonneville Environmental Foundation and Participant Media on Change the Course, a group project to conserve fresh water and preserve the ecological health of the heavily-dammed, diverted and overused Colorado River. To help raise awareness of the Change the Course movement, Silk is challenging people to pledge to reduce water consumption at ReuniteTheRiver.com. Each pledge made will restore 1,000 gallons of water to the Colorado River, working to make the river healthy again. To encourage pledges, Silk enlisted 3-D pavement artist Kurt Wenner to make a visual representation of the depleted Colorado River. The expansive art installation, totaling 32 feet by 64 feet of space, offers a visual understanding of the depleted Colorado River to help raise awareness for water conservation efforts. Unveiled in downtown Chicago in June, the installation drew hordes of people and led to nearly 1,000 new pledges. In addition to efforts by businesses such as Silk, homeowners can also help contribute to water conservation efforts by making simple lifestyle changes such as: * Appliance use - The toilet, washing machine and dishwasher are among the highest water-consuming appliances in a household. Only run the washing machine and dishwasher when full to make the most use of the water being consumed. Manufacturers of these appliances have made great strides in developing new technologies that consume less water. For example, there are toilets that use less than two gallons of water per flush.

* Gardening and lawn care - Most landscaping plants only need an inch of water each week. If there is a sprinkler system installed, add a sensor to it that turns the sprinkler on only w h e n r a i n hasn’t fallen for a set amount of time. Installing a rain gauge in the yard or edge of the flower bed can help accurately measure how much water has fallen in a week. Every household can help join the water conservation movement, bringing life back to rivers and waterways across the country and preserving freshwater resources. Take action now. THE WILLISTON REVIEW

Nascar Contributed | Kenny Bruse, NASCAR.com

LONG POND, Pa. -- Brad Keselowski pulled his car into the garage, rolled it up to the lift gate of his team’s hauler and climbed out. He walked around the red No. 2 Ford, taking stock of its appearance. Keselowski, the defending NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion, knew what was underneath the sheetmetal. How the outside fared after 400 miles around Pocono Raceway was another matter. Seemingly satisfied, he made a second lap around the vehicle, patting various teammates on the back and shoulder, offering thanks for their efforts. “I’m just ready to go home,” the Penske Racing driver said moments later. It was a long weekend for Keselowski, but not exactly a disappointing one. On Saturday, he had flown to Iowa to compete in the NASCAR Nationwide Series race, which he won. On Sunday, he battled back from a loss of track position to finish sixth in the GoBowling.com 400. Keselowski is winless this year after 21 Cup races, but only seven points outside the top 10 in the standings. After a run of seven top-10 finishes in the first eight races this year, the team is trying to rediscover the magic -- six of

and that’s the one that put both of our teams behind.

Fourth two weeks ago and now sixth at Pocono isn’t a sign of a turnaround, just a turn. But it’s a start. Teammate Joey Logano finished seventh Sunday for his second consecutive top-10 after back-to-back 40th-place finishes.

“You can look at all kinds of things throughout the day, but that stop certainly set our track position … for the rest of the race,” he said. “There wasn’t enough strategy left to play to get that back.”

At Pocono, Keselowski worked his way from 11th to first, and led five times for 14 laps. Several of those came during a run of varying pit cycles among the leaders, but such was the case for many of those out front, depending on when they elected to hit pit road. The key for Keselowski, however, came shortly after the day’s fifth caution for a single-car accident involving David Stremme. Second to eventual race winner Kasey Kahne at the time, Keselowski and crew chief Paul Wolfe elected to stop for four tires and fuel. Others stayed out, or took only two tires. When the race resumed with 61 laps remaining, Keselowski’s red machine was 15th, and a yellow four laps later “killed our strategy,” he said. “We caught that one yellow at the worst possible time with probably 50 or 60 laps to go,” Keselowski said, “and we pitted for four tires; we were still going to be OK. “But then we caught another yellow … it put us behind and we couldn’t recover. … Damn. We were just a little bit short.”

Penske Racing competition director Travis Geisler wasn’t second-guessing any decisions but admitted that “everybody else was a little more aggressive on (that stop) than we were

On the whole he said, it was a “blue-collar day” for the Penske teams. “Decent finishes and nothing to be too concerned about speed-wise with most of the field.” There are, he noted, a handful of cars “that are pretty hard to keep up with.” Hendrick Motorsports drivers swept the top two spots (Kahne and Jeff Gordon finished 1-2, respectively), while teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr. was fifth. And it took a problem with the right-front tire to slow Jimmie Johnson, who led 43 laps before the failure. “They’re doing a pretty good job,” Geisler acknowledged. “And those are the ones we’ve got to beat.”

STANDINGS SHUFFLE: MINOR MOVES AS CHASE LOOMS

PAGE 7

Contributed | NASCAR.com IN THE GREEN Kasey Kahne (Change: Ninth to eighth) The one-place change in the points standing isn’t what Kahne will take out of Pocono Raceway. Although he moved up to eighth, the driver of the No. 5 Chevrolet more importantly increased his victory total this year from one to two by winning the GoBowling.com 400. Two wins should be enough for Kahne to punch his ticket into the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup, regardless of whether or not he stays in the top 10. Jeff Gordon (Change: 10th to ninth) Perhaps opposite from his Hendrick Motorsports teammate Kasey Kahne, moving up to ninth place in the standings was an important development for Jeff Gordon. Gordon, who turned 42 Sunday and was looking for a birthday breakthrough, finished second at Pocono. The finish slightly stung, because Gordon was the leader on a late restart. The No. 24 team needs wins, but if it doesn’t get them, climbing higher in the standings is of equal importance. With no victories to fall back on, Gordon put another space between him and the cut-off line for the 10 automatic bids into NASCAR’s postseason. Brad Keselowski (Change: 13th to 12th) Any more questions about Keselowski running double duty this weekend? It’s hard to imagine the past three days going any better for the defending series champion -- except, of course, for a win at Pocono. But Keselowski did get a win at Pocono, of sorts. Ryan Blaney won the Camping World Truck Series race on Saturday afternoon, giving Keselowski a win as a team owner. The champ then flew to Iowa and won the Nationwide Series race later Saturday night. Sunday’s sixth-place finish capped

a pretty remarkable weekend and perhaps reinvigorated the team after a 21st-place finish last week at Indianapolis. And more than gaining one spot in the standings, Keselowski cut his deficit behind the 10th-place driver (currently Greg Biffle) to seven points. IN THE RED Greg Biffle (Change: eighth to 10th) This is how tight things have gotten. Greg Biffle earned a top-10 at Pocono by finishing 10th, and he lost two spots in the standings. The Biff has a win in his back pocket should he fall out of the top 10, but even that doesn’t make him a postseason lock with so many other drivers running well and challenging for victories. Next week’s road-course race at Watkins Glen International could deliver a major shakeup to everyone. Martin Truex Jr. (Change: 12th to 14th) Truex Jr. recovered from a poor qualifying effort to finish 15th Sunday afternoon. Still, it must have been frustrating for Truex to see so many drivers near him in the standings notch strong finishes. Truex Jr. holds onto the second and final Wild Card spot for now, but Ryan Newman -- who also has a win -- is right behind him in the standings

after finishing fourth Sunday. If Brad Keselowski or Kurt Busch finally break through and win in the next two weeks, Truex Jr. could see himself out of the Chase. Matt Kenseth (Change: Sixth to seventh) This is purely semantics. The points positions didn’t change all that much following a steady Pocono performance from most of the circuit’s top drivers. So yes, Matt Kenseth lost one spot in the standings after being involved in a wreck on the opening lap. He’s still 26 points above eighth-place Kasey Kahne, and he still has four victories this season. He’ll almost certainly be the No. 1 or No. 2 seed when the Chase starts.

Buying a car: new or used, that is the question

(BPT) - Conventional wisdom says that a new car will always cost you more than a used one. Why? There’s a higher price tag and you have to face the depreciation that comes when you drive off the dealer’s lot.
