Dike, a man of many talents, is not just an actor but also a rapper, lawyer, and media entrepreneur. While he may not be actively practicing law, his degree proves beneficial when it comes to understanding his movie contracts. Juggling his various roles, he dedicates most of his time to making movies and building his media company. His music career, which he is now actively pursuing, is set to culminate in an album release this year.
His acting career isn’t restricted to the big screen; there’s also NollyTube, the Nollywood movies on YouTube, and Dike has been in several of them. He is also working on his NollyTube movie titled We Move. With all these projects, it’s safe to say that he is a busy man. Still, he finds some free time to do what he loves, which includes watching movies, playing football, and drinking tea, amongst other things. In all that he does, there will be criticism. The actor says he feels good when he gets positive feedback and has learnt to decipher negative criticism for constructive criticism. Read his story on pages 8 through 10.

RED BAG MAGIC
6 Styling Tips to Elevate Your Look
BY DORCAS AKINTOYEAred purse is more than simply an accessory; it’s a statement item that can give any ensemble an immediate burst of colour and character. Adding a red purse to your outfit may take your style game to the next level, whether you’re dressing for a night out on the town, a casual brunch, or work. But just how should this statement piece be styled? Don’t worry; we’ve compiled a thorough guide with six specific, detailed ideas to help you wear your red bag with style and confidence.
2.
1. CAUSAL CHIC WITH DENIM MONOCHROME MAGIC
Accessorising a red bag with a monochromatic ensemble is a straightforward yet highly impactful styling technique. The vivid colour of the red bag will pop against the background of a single colour scheme, whether you’re wearing an allblack or white outfit from head to toe. By highlighting your accessories and keeping a smooth, elegant appearance, this contrast makes a powerful visual impression. Choose a red crossbody or basic tote bag to turn a plain monochromatic ensemble into something extraordinary.
Combine your red bag with denim pieces for the ideal casual-chic appearance that exudes style and simplicity. Denim is the perfect backdrop to balance the brashness of a red purse, whether it’s a denim jacket, trousers, or chambray shirt. If you want to give your denim outfit a splash of colour, go for a red crossbody or bag. Finish the look with sneakers or ankle boots for a stylish and effortlessly cool ensemble that’s ideal for weekend excursions or laidback get-togethers with friends.
STATEMENT PRINT MIXING
Who says a red bag and mixed prints aren’t compatible?
To achieve a distinctive and eye-catching style, embrace your creative side and experiment with bright patterns and designs. The secret to mastering pattern mixing, whether you are working with floral, polka dots, stripes, or animal designs, is ensuring that one main hue unifies the entire ensemble. To add a bit of refinement to your diverse mix of designs, use a structured bag or clutch in a deep shade of red.
POP OF COLOUR BLOCKING
5. 4.
Making a dramatic fashion statement with colour blocking is an enjoyable and carefree approach to styling your red bag. To create a visually appealing style, wear your red purse with clothing that compliment or contrast with each other. Choose a red bag with a navy blue jumpsuit, for instance, for a more subdued yet sophisticated colour combination, or a red bag with an emerald green outfit for an eye-catching contrast that is sure to draw attention. Creating a well-coordinated and harmonious style requires balancing the intensity of red with other colours in your clothing.
SOPHISTICATED NEUTRALS
Wear your red bag with neutral hues like camel, taupe, or beige for a classic and elegant appearance. When your red bag takes centre stage and shines, neutral hues create the ideal background. A red bag gives a vivid flash of colour that quickly transforms your ensemble from ordinary to remarkable, whether paired with a camelcoloured pair of pants, a taupe sweater dress, or a beige coat. To add a touch of class and elegance to your neutral look, go for a deep red structured satchel or shoulder bag.
6.
EVENING GLAMOUR
A red bag may give your look a dash of refinement and glitz for evening attire. Adding a red bag to your evening ensemble can quickly make it seem red carpet ready, whether you’re going to a formal dinner, cocktail party, or night out on the town. To add some colour and drama to your evening gown or little black dress, go for a sleek and streamlined bag in a striking hue of red. Finish the look with bright red lips, stiletto heels, and statement jewellery for a glitzy and striking ensemble that is guaranteed to turn heads.
CONCLUSION
When styling a red bag, there are countless ways to showcase your style and create a strong fashion statement. There is a style choice to fit every occasion and taste, whether you choose refined elegance or casual chic. So go ahead and own the red bag trend while letting your outfit take centre stage!

ESO DIKE
is Dominating Nollywood And NollyTube
To be quite honest, I don’t know anyone busier than Eso Dike right now. Eso is many things. He is an actor, rapper, TV presenter, lawyer, and a certified Nollywood heartthrob, with ladies crushing on him all over social media. After his superb portrayal of Tsola in Arese Ugwu’s The Smart Money Woman TV series, Eso has been able to build a formidable personal brand in the industry, becoming a household name just like those he once looked up to.
The Big Screen Giant, or Quiet Don as he’s fondly called, has taken over the NollyTube scene this year, and he’s making necessary strides towards his goal of one day acting in Hollywood. If you aren’t familiar with the term “NollyTube”, it refers to the uprising of Nollywood movies on YouTube. Some of our favourite stars and filmmakers have decided to branch out of the cinema and streaming service platforms to give their audiences free entertainment.
Eso Dike is fast becoming a regular in the NollyTube scene and that’s why he’s this week’s cover. This year alone he’s featured in Omoni Oboli TV’s Cold As Ice, Breakfast is Served, A Night in July, and Fiance for A Day, to name a few.
Under his production company, Collier Noir Production, he’s also working on his first NollyTube movie titled, We Move in collaboration with Metanoia Productions.
In this interview, Eso Dike speaks to Eki Ogunbor, Lifestyle Editor at Large at TheWill Downtown, about his journey in Nollywood so far, his love for music, and his plans for the future.
Can you share your earliest memories of being drawn to the entertainment industry?
Vinyl Records! Music was my first attraction to entertainment. My father has a collection and still does, and he plays different types of music every day. For movies, it was from watching rappers who made the switch from music to movies. I was fascinated by that. Ice Cube in the 90s with Boyz N The Hood, Friday and others. Jay Z as well with Streets Is Watching. There are a few of them, Snoop Dogg had a movie out in the 90s if I recall. Then came the early 2000s era with Ludacris, TI, etc.
“Making music for me is harder these days. I didn’t need a process or inspiration. I was always in the mood, and I used to write all the time. But it’s true when they say you have to feed something if you want it to grow. I haven’t been feeding my music muscle as often as I should, but I plan to change that.”
How do you balance your various roles as an actor, musician, television personality, lawyer, and media entrepreneur?
I haven’t practiced law actively for several years and I have taken a break from television presenting. Most of my time is dedicated to making movies and building my media company. As for music, I’m back to being active, and I intend to drop an album this year.
What inspired you to pursue a career in law, and how does your legal background influence your work in the entertainment field?
Apart from theatre arts and mass communication, law was the only thing that appealed to me. I have a flair for it, and many of my family members are lawyers, including my older sister. My legal background influences my work in very minute ways. For example, I am very particular about reading my contracts word for word, even though I’ve realised that many actors don’t.
What do you find most fulfilling about your work as an actor, and how do you choose the projects you want to be involved in?
Being able to portray different characters and step in the shoes of different people. That’s what I find most fulfilling. I choose projects I want to be involved in using a three criteria method:
1) the excitement I get from the script and the character I’m supposed to play,
2) the financial remuneration on offer,
3) the impact I foresee said project or character having on my career and the industry in general.
Can you describe your creative process when working on music projects compared to preparing for acting roles? Making music for me is harder these days. I didn’t need a process or inspiration. I was always in the mood, and I used to write all the time. But it’s true when they say you
have to feed something if you want it to grow. I haven’t been feeding my music muscle as often as I should, but I plan to change that. For acting, I prepare by doing research and watching films and characters that are similar in my head. Watching other actors in their element inspires me.
The Smart Money Woman received widespread acclaim. What was your favourite part about working on the show, and how did it impact your personal and professional growth?
My favourite and most gut-wrenching part of working on that show wasn’t the fact that I got to work with some of the biggest stars in the industry. I had the biggest impostor syndrome on that set. You have to understand that, at the time, I had been acting for years, but nothing was going on for me. I was on the verge of quitting acting when Arese gave me that opportunity. I didn’t know why she did it, but I was, and still am grateful to her. Casting an unknown face, with maybe 6k or 7k followers, [on a project] with household names. The weight of expectation plagued me and didn’t allow me to enjoy shooting season 1. The growth after the show was tangible. Both personally and professionally. Especially after it debuted on Netflix, two years [I think], after we shot it. That was my first introduction to a global audience, and things haven’t been the same since.
Can you share any memorable experiences or challenges you faced while filming Ijakumo, The Wildflower, and The Stand Up?
In Ijakumo, I had cables attached to me that lifted me maybe 15 feet from the ground. That was exhilarating. On The Wildflower, the subject matter of the film and what my character’s partner experienced left me with a knot in my chest, even after filming. I wore the most uncomfortable contact lens in one 1 eye for the duration of the shoot whilst filming The Stand Up.
How do you stay motivated and inspired in such a competitive industry, and what keeps you driven to pursue your goals?
I’m inspired at all times because the thought of mediocrity scares me. I chose to be here and failure is not an option, by the grace of God.
As a media entrepreneur, what motivated you to venture into the business side of the industry, and what are your long-term aspirations in this regard?
My motivation is to make more money, own my intellectual property, and eventually control my own narrative.
What advice would you give aspiring actors and musicians who are just starting their journey in the entertainment industry?
Patience is a virtue. Perseverance too. Do the work to improve yourself and create consistently. Collaborate, as well. Eventually, with hard and smart work, God’s grace, and good fortune, it will take off.
How do you think the Nigerian entertainment industry has evolved over the years, and what changes do you hope to see in the future?
“I haven’t practiced law actively for several years and I have taken a break from television presenting. Most of my time is dedicated to making movies and building my media company. ”
As someone who has experienced success in both television and film, do you have a preference for one medium over the other? If so, why? I don’t have a preference. It would depend on the project.
“The entertainment industry in Nigeria is one of the biggest exports out of the African continent. And most of it is not governmentassisted. That speaks volumes about how much it has evolved. What I foresee is bigger collaborations and acknowledgement across the board.”
What are some common misconceptions people have about the entertainment industry that you’d like to debunk? A few! People think filmmaking is child’s play and that we are just outside having a swell time. From first-hand experience, making and being in films is probably one of the hardest things I’ve had to do, and I’ve worked in furnishing! So you can imagine. Also, people think actors are just rolling in cash, 24/7, 365 days a year. Errrrr, apart from maybe a certain percentage, that’s not the case. There are a few others that I’d rather not get into.
The entertainment industry in Nigeria is one of the biggest exports out of the African continent. And most of it is not government-assisted. That speaks volumes about how much it has evolved. What I foresee is bigger collaborations and acknowledgement across the board.
Can you share any upcoming projects or collaborations that you’re particularly excited about?
The Smart Money Woman Season 2, I can’t wait for that to come out. Grind Season 2 as well. There’s a lot I can’t say right now, but trust me, I’m cooking.
How do you handle criticism and feedback, both positive and negative, about your work?
I try to take it all on the chin. It’s all part and parcel of the job. I feel good when I get positive feedback. I’ve also learned to decipher bashing (negative criticism) from the constructive.
Can you tell us about a role or project that challenged you the most and how you overcame any obstacles you faced?
All roles are challenging in their own way. I had to play a blind man once. I closed my eyes practically the whole time we were filming to get into character. That was challenging!
What role do you believe artists and entertainers play in shaping societal narratives and promoting positive change?
You’re automatically a role model as a public figure or someone in the spotlight, so we do have a role to play. But in the end, we are humans as well. So it shouldn’t be down to just public figures to share societal narratives.
Can you share any behind-the-scenes anecdotes or funny moments from your time on set or in the recording studio?
If you go on my social media pages, you’ll see a funny clip that I had an idea for with Omoni Oboli, after Bimbo Ademoye had
COVER
discovered “Premarital Deyemi” [Deyemi Okanlawon] on set. That was hilarious!
What do you enjoy doing in your free time when you’re not working on projects?
I watch movies. I play football. I drink tea. Amongst other things.
Lastly, what message or legacy do you hope to leave behind through your work in the entertainment industry?
I hope to be able to inspire with my story. I moved to Lagos to pursue my dreams without a plan in mind. Just faith in God and myself. I want to leave behind a plethora of good work. Things that my kid’s kid’s kid’s kid’s kid’s kids will be proud of.
SKIN BY ZARON LAUNCH
And Lagos Fashion Week Woven Threads V
Last week was quite eventful for me. I attended the launch of Zaron’s new skincare products and the Lagos Fashion Week Woven Threads V event, titled Commune. Both events happened on the same day. During the day, I was in the office for my day job at Nosak Group, and after work, I was off to Awolowo Road to the Zaron flagship store for the launch party.
The new products launched are part of the Skin by Zaron range of products. If you’re familiar with active ingredients in skin care products, then some of these names won’t be strange to you. The brand now has a 7% Glycolic Acid spray, a 2% Salicylic Acid spray, and a Glycerin, Rose Water, and Oat Extract Moisture Boost spray.
Glycolic Acid exfoliates the skin, revealing brighter skin, revives dull skin, improves skin texture, and fights hyperpigmentation. It also helps to smoothen fine lines, treat breakouts, and promote the production of collagen, which helps with your skin’s elasticity.
Salicylic Acid also does some of the things mentioned above, but it also helps to unclog pores, minimise the appearance of enlarged
pores, reduce excess oil, and reduce the risk of skin inflammation. It also fights blackheads and whiteheads and helps to prevent blemishes, helping to smooth out skin texture.
Moisture! Moisture!!
Moisture!!! When I first started my skincare journey, moisturising was the first thing I was told to do more of
because my skin barrier was compromised. So when I opened my goody bag from Skin by Zaron and saw they had given me the moisture boost spray, I was very happy. This spray leaves your skin feeling supple and hydrated. It also helps strengthen your skin barrier and appearance, giving your skin a healthy glow.
After mingling, trying out products, and replacing some of my Zaron makeup products that had run out, I set out to SOTO Gallery to attend the Lagos Fashion Week Woven Threads show.
“At the heart of Woven Threads is celebrating the ingenuity and resilience of African fashion designers while emphasising the importance of sustainability and waste reduction in the industry. The exhibition brings together a diverse range of designers, experts, and stakeholders to discuss and showcase the best practices in African fashion design.”
- Lagos Fashion Week website
I was able to see runway pieces by two brands that participated this year: Y’wandeLag and Pettre Taylor. Other participating designers included Ajanée, By.Wuzzy, Dust of the Earth, Bornstarng, E.S.O by Liman, This Is Us, Kilentar, Lohije, Eki Kere, and more. Aside from the Buy African movement in fashion, promoting sustainability in fashion is another thing that I try to be very conscious of. We’ll talk more about this later on, but we should all be conscious of what our spending habits end up doing to our environment. Buying fewer fast fashion pieces as consumers and as designers, being more conscious of the waste created during production are small ways we can make a difference.
Have a great week ahead, Sweetie!
WHAT ARE ACIDS?
In skincare, there are two main groups of acids: Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and Beta hydroxy acids (BHAs). These acid groups help loosen the fluids that bind cells to the upper layers of the skin, and when this happens, it gives you a smoother and brighter face. Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) are the most common acids used for skin. They are good options for treating fine lines, texture, and dullness because they are water soluble and work mainly on the skin’s surface. On the other hand, beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) are good options for treating and preventing acne, and they also penetrate easily and deeply into clogged pores.
SKINCARE ACIDS AND HOW TO KNOW WHICH IS BEST FOR YOUR SKIN
(1)SALICYLIC ACIDS
Salicylic acids are part of the beta hydroxyl acid (BHA) group and contain antibacterial properties. Most importantly, they work wonders on smoothing out hormonal breakouts, reducing breakouts, and preventing pore clogging. Salicylic acid is perfect for oily and acne-prone skin because it penetrates deeper into the skin than AHAs. People with sensitive skin should be very careful with Salicylic acid, as it can dry out the skin.
Skincare Acids
How to Pick The Right One For Your Skin
BY DORCAS AKINTOYEHearing the word “acid” might get us thinking of the dangerous chemical acid we were told about in chemistry class. You don’t have to be scared because the skincare acid in this context is the mega-multitasker of skincare ingredients. Skincare acid smooths lines, tightens pores, erases dark spots, and gives your skin a shining glow. Another benefit of incorporating skincare acids into your beauty routine is that they could help address your skin concerns and, at the same time, lead you to the skin of your dreams. Let’s explore the world of skincare acids, including tips on how to find the perfect one for your skin.
This acid falls into the alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) group, and it happens to be the smallest of the group, which is why it easily seeps into the top layer of the skin by breaking down damaged surface cells. Glycolic acids can give your skin a mild peeling and exfoliating effect because they are derived from sugar-laden fruits like papaya and pineapple.
(2)GLYCOLIC ACIDS (4)KOJIC ACID
Kojic acid’s effect on the skin is the same as that of vitamin C. It helps inhibit pigment formation and brighten irregular or uneven skin tone. Although kojic acid is safe for most skin types, it can cause allergic reactions in those with sensitive skin. It is advisable to try a patch test before incorporating a product that contains kojic acid into your routine.
CONCLUSION
(3)HYALURONIC ACID
For all the right reasons, hyaluronic acid is one of the most hyped acids in skincare. This acid does more than just hydrate and plump the skin; it also helps tighten skin cells at the epidermis level, which gives our skin an instant lift. Another reason why skincare enthusiasts hype this acid is that any skin type can use it to get youthful, supple, and smooth skin.
Even though skincare acids are effective, you need to be very careful when addressing skincare concerns. Some acids may not be advisable for people with sensitive skin or skin concerns like rosacea, eczema, or psoriasis, so you need to discuss with a dermatologist who can assist you with any questions you might have.

Building A Healthy Work Environment Through Respect WORKPLACE ETIQUETTE
Open and Well-mannered Communication
Open dialogue and active listening among team members must be encouraged. Opportunities for everyone to voice their opinions, concerns, and ideas must be created. It should also be a safe space for them to feel comfortable enough to contribute. Now, creating opportunities for open communication is different from well-mannered communication.
As much as you have the floor to air out your views, every word you speak must be respectful and polite, keeping in mind that everyone around you is also human.
Training And Team Bonding
One way to build a healthy environment where they can understand each other is to involve team bonding.
When employees have a relationship that transcends beyond the workplace and becomes interpersonal, they become more aware of what the other person is like and how to better relate to them. These bonding exercises could be a training program or something recreational that would help them work on their emotional intelligence, conflict resolution abilities, and professional and social skills. Such exercises promote empathy and effective conversations.
BY JOHNSON CHUKWUEKERespect for humans is all about recognising their rights and dignity as individuals—treating them with fairness and kindness irrespective of their background, beliefs, or perspectives.
Treating colleagues with respect, regardless of their levels and ranks, is also a needed skill for any professional. When individuals feel valued and appreciated, they are encouraged to contribute even more to the workplace, thus creating a healthy work environment for everyone. No man is an island, and when it comes to our workplace, everyone needs to work together for a common goal. Here are some key strategies to cultivate workplace respect and create a conducive working atmosphere.
Establish Expectations
Basically, a policy has to be made on what type of behaviour is expected from everyone at your workplace, as well as the consequences for violating these codes of conduct. This ensures all professionals understand their role in maintaining a respectful work environment.
Lead By Example
The saying “Change Starts
With You” perfectly applies to this situation. To see the change you want, you have to start it. Take the lead in treating people around you with kindness, respect, and empathy. The same level of respect you have for a higher-ranking colleague, you give to subordinates as well.
Rewarding Good Deeds or Behaviour
Acknowledging individuals who have made an impact professionally or in any other positive way around the workplace is bound to encourage others to follow suit. This method of rewarding people gives other employees a different mindset, leading to a more positive approach to their duties.
Overall, understanding respect in the workplace is about fostering appreciation, consideration, and support. By implementing these strategies, a thriving workplace built on mutual respect and hard work can be created.
Cuddling For Couples 6
1.THE CLASSIC HAND HOLD
HOW TO
While sitting together, lying next to each other, or sitting across a table, lock hands together.
BENEFITS
For anyone having a hard time or looking for ways to build an intimate connection with their partner, handholding is the perfect position to work with.
Best Options of Plus Benefits
BY DORCAS AKINTOYEEven though cuddling might seem like something that should happen naturally, there is an art to it. Cuddling has a lot of benefits apart from the fact that it can be a great way to make effective use of your couch. Cuddling helps you feel closer to your partner, relax your mind and body, and most importantly, release all those feel-good, happy brain chemicals. Let us explore the six best cuddling positions for couples, along with perks tied to each unique position.
4.THE HEAD CRADLE
HOW TO
While sitting on the floor or couch, ask your partner to lay their head on your lap. In that position, you can stroke their hair or massage their ear.
BENEFITS
The feeling of intimacy and closeness can be enhanced by having your partner’s head on your lap. It also helps to reduce stress. One great thing about this kind of cuddling is that it can be used as an alternative to spooning, most especially when you are sitting on a couch or bingewatching your favourite show.
2.THE LAP-SIT SNUGGLE
HOW TO
When your spouse is sitting, take a seat in their lap. You can fold your legs beneath you and face them directly, or you can face forward and lean back into them.
BENEFITS
Sitting on your partner’s lap is another way to strengthen your bond in between small conversations or bingewatching your favourite Netflix show. The close physical touch can help you feel loved and reassured, reduce blood pressure, boost oxytocin, and decrease stress.
3.THE HEARTBEAT HUG
HOW TO
While lying on your back, let your partner rest their head on your chest.
BENEFITS
Just as gazing into your loved one eyes, you get the same effect when you and your partner engage in heart communication. Heart communication helps in increasing the feeling of intimacy between partners.
5.THE FULL SPOON
HOW TO
Lying on their sides, both partners face the same direction. While the partner in the front leans back into their partner’s stomach, the person in the back wraps their arm around their partner.
BENEFITS
For some good reason, spooning has become ubiquitous when cuddling. Having your lover behind you, embracing you, and holding their face in your ear all evoke feelings of intimacy. Make sure you take turns so that each person has a chance to feel the other’s embrace.
6.THE HALF SPOON
HOW TO
While one person lies on their back, the other lies on their side. The person on their side puts their arm over their partner’s body and rests their head on their upper chest. Additionally, the partner who is on their back puts their arm around the other person.
BENEFITS
The half-spoon posture increases emotions of closeness and intimacy, just like full-on spooning. According to studies, hugging can generally lower stress and enhance general wellness. Just remember to take turns switching positions with your partner. It all comes down to listening to your body—both your partner’s and your own—and allowing it to tell you what feels right at that particular time.
CONCLUSION
In the hectic world of today, it’s easy to sacrifice intimacy and hard to find time for rest and renewal. You can accomplish both and maintain relationships with the people you care about by cuddling. What are you waiting for then? Give and receive hugs, cuddles, kisses, and strokes whenever possible. Cuddle up with your spouse in the cuddling positions that suit you both. Both your body and spirit will benefit from it.
MOVIE REVIEW:
Rebel Moon
Part Two: The Scargiver
Wheat. So much wheat.
That’s the main takeaway from the second instalment of Zack Snyder’s interplanetary space saga that, depending on your perspective, either pays homage to or shamelessly rips off previous epics ranging from Seven Samurai to Star Wars. If you add up the running times of both Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver and the first film, it amounts to well over four hours. It’s not surprising, considering that this one features a sequence in which the characters harvest wheat for what seems longer than a Swedish art film. And I know that the setting is supposed to be an alternate universe, but considering that it features spaceships and technically advanced weaponry, it seems a bit absurd that farming hasn’t advanced beyond scythes.
Such musings are unavoidable when confronted with this boring epic, which continues the story of a rag-tag group of farmers living on the moon of Veldt being threatened with extinction by the imperialistic Motherworld. Their military forces, the Imperium, are led by Darth Vader, sorry, Admiral Noble (Ed Skrein), who wakes up understandably angry after his near-death experience in the previous film.
The farmers, meanwhile, have been organised into a fighting force by Luke Skywalker, sorry, Kora (Sofia Boutella), who’s assembled a mercenary team featuring such warriors as cyborg, lightsword-wielding Nemesis (Doona Bae), perpetually shirtless Tarak (Staz Nair), farmer Gunnar (Michiel Huisman) and former Imperium general Titus (Djimon Hounsou). There’s also a very articulate robot, C-3PO (, I mean, Jimmy), voiced by Anthony Hopkins, delivering the best performance in the film without even having to show up on set.
If you thought the previous instalment was all build-up, you might be distressed to learn that the follow-up is…a lot more build-up. Although this time it’s a little faster-paced and leads to an extended battle sequence comprising roughly the film’s second half. It’s hard to tell, however, since Snyder employs so much of his trademark slow-motion that you get the feeling the movie would be a short if delivered at normal speed.
That extended build-up includes, get this, a lengthy ceremony in which many of the heroic characters are presented with awards. (It’s hard to blame Snyder and his co-screenwriters Kurt Johnstad and Shay Hatten for this because it’s highly unlikely the film itself is likely to receive any.) There’s also an extended scene in which Titus orders his fellow warriors to
deliver their backstories, presented in the form of flashbacks that feel like the cinematic equivalent of speed dating.
The first film was roundly criticised for its lack of memorable dialogue, plot elements or characters, and this one doesn’t do much to improve those aspects unless you consider Titus singing a mournful lament prior to going into battle to be a plus (Hounsou does have a surprisingly nice voice). None of the actors can really be faulted, since they exhibit an impressive commitment to their physically strenuous roles, many of them displaying the sort of toned, muscular physiques that the mere mortals among us can only dream of. Boutella and Skrein are particularly notable in this regard, especially as demonstrated in an awesome hand-to-hand fight sequence taking place on an out-of-control spaceship that seems to go on for hours (I’m not sure that it actually doesn’t).
The extended battle scenes with which Rebel Moon concludes prove undeniably impressive, which is for the best since they’re the film’s entire reason for existing. Snyder provides an ample display of the visual flair and skill for action that have endeared him to legions of fans who exhibit so much dedication that they’re willing to sit through numerous versions of his films. As is the case with these two, for which Snyder has announced he’ll soon be providing R-rated director’s cuts running some three hours each. Which makes one wonder: Why bother to watch these versions that clearly don’t have his full endorsement?

THE SYMPATHIZER
Oldboy director Park Chanwook and co-showrunner Don McKellar’s series adaptation of Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel is a cinematic tour de force – with Park paving the way with the first three and best of seven episodes. Anyone who’s familiar with the book’s tricky material realises that it’s an impressive feat to pull off. The Sympathizer skips from drama to satire to comedy as it wraps itself around complex issues about identity, the immigrant experience, America’s struggle to grasp Asian culture and history and the feeling of always being the outsider. It does so with vision, depth and detail. Actor Hoa Xuande beautifully handles the difficult task of bringing to life the nameless Captain, the show’s duplicitous protagonist who’s an undercover double agent during the Vietnam War era. His mother was Vietnamese, and his dad was French.
The series opens with The Captain imprisoned in Vietnam, where he’s ordered to write down his recollections — which provide chances to flash back to his friendship with two other boys, his work and his relationship with an antiCommunist known as The General (Toan Le) and his family members, a nail-biting flight out of Vietnam during the fall of Saigon, the people he meets and even targets in Los Angeles, and the insane consultancy role he lands in on an overblown, excessive
Through these experiences, the General also encounters larger-than-life
characters — key ones played to the hilt by Oscar winner Robert Downey Jr., an actor who specialises in chewing up the scenery. Wisely, the directing and producing team (Downey Jr. is a producer) hand him ample space to cook. It’s a smart move, with Downey Jr. providing much of the humour and sometimes the menace in a variety of roles. Also memorable — and deserving of another Emmy nomination — is Sandra Oh, the exasperated assistant to Downey Jr.’s professor and the older lover to The Captain. The Sympathizer walks a tightrope but is fearless about tackling uncomfortable subject matter. It’s smart and mesmerising.
