Fashion Advice For Taller Individuals FASHION TALL AND TRENDY
BY DORCAS AKINTOYE
Balance and confidence are the cornerstones of stylish dressing. Taller people have distinct proportions, which can be exquisitely accentuated with the appropriate attire. In this article, we’ll look at some fashion tips for tall people. These style suggestions can help you look your best, whether dressed for a particular occasion or a more laid-back approach.
1 EMBRACE VERTICAL STRIPES
The visual line created by vertical stripes gives the impression of increased height and leanness. A classic option that adds elegance for guys is a pinstripe suit. Women can wear dresses or pants with vertical strips to obtain a similar appearance. It’s important to watch that your stripes don’t get too big because that could throw off your proportions. For a more streamlined appearance,
2. AVOID OVERSIZED CLOTHING
Oversized clothes may be fashionable, but if you’re tall, they may overpower your figure. Your appearance could seem
3. CHOOSE THE RIGHT PANT LENGTH
Wearing pants that are the appropriate length can greatly improve your appearance. Too short pants can be uncomfortable, and too long pants can bunch up and appear sloppy. The ideal pair of jeans for men should split slightly above your shoes. If they are wearing heels, women can choose jeans that fall just below the floor or slightly above. This elongates your legs and gives you a polished, sleek look.
5. ACCESSORISE WISELY
An outfit can be made or broken by its accessories. Neckties and pocket squares provide tall guys a personal touch without overpowering their build. Long necklaces and scarves can improve your appearance for women, but avoid adding bulk with overly chunky pieces. Another fantastic item for both men and women is a belt. They offer a focal point to your ensemble and assist break up your height and define your waist.
4. PLAY WITH PATTERNS AND COLOURS
Mixing a variety of patterns and colours can make your ensemble stand out. However, tall people need to be careful with the designs they select. Sometimes, big, striking designs can be too much to handle. Rather, go with subtle prints or smaller patterns like polka dots. When it comes to colour, contrasting hues have the power to break up your height. A balanced style can be achieved, for example, by pairing a lighter top with darker bottoms or vice versa.
CONCLUSION
6 . WEAR LAYERS
Layering is a fantastic method to give your ensemble more depth and dimension. If you are tall, layers might help shorten your silhouette. A vest or sweater layered over a button-up shirt is a common option for men. Women can wear a blouse underneath a jacket or a cardigan over a dress. Selecting layers with complementary colours and textures is crucial to achieving a cohesive look. It keeps your ensemble interesting and adds style at the same time.
Having a balanced, well-fitting, and stylish wardrobe is essential for tall people. You can show off your height in a stylish and self-assured manner by embracing vertical stripes, staying away from oversized clothing, selecting the appropriate length for your jeans, experimenting with patterns and colours, selecting your accessories carefully, and dressing in layers. Keep in mind that your wardrobe is a reflection of your individuality, so wear what makes you feel good.

GENOVEVA UMEH
Over the past few decades, the Nigerian film industry—known globally as Nollywood—has grown remarkably and become a major force in the world of cinema. In addition to captivating viewers, its dynamic cultural setting and rich storytelling have greatly enhanced the nation’s cultural legacy and promoted a greater understanding of Nigerian arts and traditions worldwide. This ascent has been greatly aided by the extraordinary skills of Nollywood actors, who have brought stories to life and propelled the industry to new heights.
Genoveva Umeh is among these exceptional talents. She began her career as a lawyer before becoming an actress, and thanks to her fascinating performances and commitment to her profession, she gained prominence very quickly. Umeh has distinguished herself in the industry by her ability to capture the essence of various characters and bring them to life on screen. Her position as a top actress in Nollywood has been solidified by her parts in well-known television shows like Blood Sisters and Far From Home, in addition to her critically acclaimed work in Breath of Life. So far, Umeh has been able to showcase the depth and potential of Nigerian cinema through her work, inspiring and amusing many people.
In this interview with THEWILL DOWNTOWN’s Dorcas Akintoye, Genoveva Umeh discusses her journey from law to acting, her challenges, and her aspirations for the future. She shares insights into her process of preparing for roles, the role of film and television in shaping societal values and cultural norms in Nigeria, and her hopes for the continued growth of Nollywood.
What inspired you to pursue a career in acting, and how did you transition from law to acting?
I became passionate about acting in high school and discovered that I was happiest while performing. I also watched Nigerian films and series and was inspired by the women who starred in them. If an actress moved me, I would be on the internet reading all I could about her. Professionally, my acting career began in 2018, after my undergraduate law degree. I found that I was passionate about acting and wanted to give it a shot, so I moved from London to Lagos to take a swing at Nollywood.
What role or project do you feel has pushed you the most out of your comfort zone and contributed significantly to your growth as an artist?
In 2021, I booked the role of ‘Timeyin’ in Blood Sisters, my first Netflix original with EbonyLife Studios. She was a recovering drug addict who desperately wanted to be seen by her family. She had a few challenging scenes, including taking cocaine, a club scene, a couple of fight scenes, and wielding a gun at some point. Up until that
point, I had never done so much research for a character. I was also working alongside some of the finest actors in Africa. Although it was a lot of hard work, this role opened up my film career. I’m grateful for the growth that came from this opportunity.
What was the most challenging role you have ever played, and why? How did you prepare for it?
I’m just coming off a set where I play a bride who is kidnapped by men disguised as herdsmen. In the 11 days I spent filming in Abeokuta, I was emotionally drained, running and fighting, and received insect bites, all in a thick forest. I knew it would be a hard experience, but I could not have prepared for just how hard it was going to be. I’m happy I got to be a part of this story, and I want to give a shout-out to my team, the cast, and the crew of this film, which is coming soon.
How has your background and upbringing influenced your approach to acting and the roles you choose?
“At
the beginning of chasing my acting dreams, I wanted to book lead roles or, to be honest, any job. I thought that would set me up for life, and perhaps I’d retire and chill every day, lol. Now, success is in what I say with the opportunities I’m given. I find success in doing the little things and in doing hard things every day. I find success in the relationships I have with God, friends, and family. I consider myself hugely successful, and I’m grateful.”
My parents are from Anambra State, but I was born in Enugu State, where we lived until I was 11. Then, I moved to London, United Kingdom, where I spent my teenage and early adult life. My parents were intentional about developing my confidence by ensuring I participated in extracurricular activities. I was raised to explore my interests and to understand my Nigerian culture. I’ve found that I enjoy playing women of African culture who have something important to say. How do you manage the pressures and public expectations that come with being a well-known actress?
“Staying physically active, I train in Shotokan Karate, which requires a high level of dedication and passion. To learn and grow, you have to be consistent, unlike acting, which fluctuates in screen opportunities. Karate is a performance of its kind. I’m happy to have found this passion because it makes me feel alive.”
I’m wholeheartedly grateful to my fans who support and root for me. I feel grateful to have a platform that inspires young women like myself. I’m grateful for the opportunities I’ve had, and I thank God for my family, friends, and my manager, Isioma Osaje, who keeps me grounded. It’s important to me to be 1% better every day. I’m not sure I’ll ever feel like I’m doing enough, but I just have to keep doing my best.
How do you
perceive the role of film and television in shaping societal values and cultural norms in Nigeria? Film and television not only entertain but
also educate and raise awareness about societal issues. I’ve enjoyed being a part of films and shows that shed light on important topics. Netflix originals, such as Blood Sisters, raised issues about domestic violence, drugs, human trafficking, and more, while the young adult show Far From Home addresses problems with social class delineations in society. Unveiling these social problems to individuals and communities helps promote empathy and inspire action.
How do you think streaming platforms are changing the landscape of the film industry, particularly for Nigerian cinema? I love streaming. I appreciate the convenience it offers to audiences with busy lives. As a creative, it keeps me working, providing more opportunities for our stories to reach a wider audience.
What role has mentorship played in your career, and how do you approach mentoring others who aspire to follow in your footsteps?
I’ve felt supported by some incredibly hardworking women I admire and have chosen to learn from. During my first year in Lagos, Lala Akindoju allowed me into her process as a filmmaker. I would assist in important meetings, and she taught me how to multitask in an incredibly fast-paced industry. Another woman I admire, who is also now my manager, Isioma Osaje, has taught me many things, especially about patience, grace, and timing. These women inspire me and make me open to sharing what I’ve learned on my journey.
Can you discuss a moment in your career when you felt like giving up and what motivated you to keep going? In 2020, I thought I had lost out on booking the role of Zina in Far From Home. It was hard, and I cried almost every day for a month, feeling defeated, but then I remembered that I was not defined by the loss and ensured I kept myself busy.
How has your understanding of success evolved since you first started your career in acting?
At the beginning of chasing my acting dreams, I wanted to book lead roles or, to be honest, any job. I thought that would set me up for life, and perhaps I’d retire and chill every day, lol. Now, success is in what I say with the opportunities I’m given. I find success in doing the little things and in doing hard things every day. I find success in the relationships I have with God, friends, and family. I consider myself hugely successful, and I’m grateful.
What personal rituals or routines do you follow to maintain your mental and emotional well-being amidst a busy acting career?
I enjoy living an inspired life. I maintain a consistent prayer life, accompanied by a daily devotional. I enjoy reading inspiring books or articles and unwinding with inspirational videos. I also love Nigerian meals like swallow and soup, especially Ogbonno soup, and tiger nuts. This year, I’ve consistently been in therapy to help me keep up, and it has been amazing.
What’s the most unconventional or surprising source of inspiration you’ve found for your acting?
Staying physically active, I train in Shotokan Karate, which requires a high level of dedication and passion. To learn and grow, you have to be consistent, unlike acting, which fluctuates in screen opportunities. Karate is a performance of its kind. I’m happy to have found this passion because it makes me feel alive.
What does a typical day look like for you when you are not on set or working on a project?
I rest, sleep, and eat good food. I catch up on my shows, connect with family, and handle any admin work, like this interview. (I did this interview lying on my bed. Bliss.)
Food Hacks And Kitchen Tips
Making Cooking Easier And More Fun
BY DORCAS AKINTOYE
The kitchen is where culinary magic happens and is considered the heart of the house. Cooking can occasionally feel like a chore, but what if there were easy tips you could follow to make cooking more fun and less stressful in the kitchen? This article will go over six kitchen tricks and time-saving strategies to make cooking easier and add more enjoyment to your cooking endeavours. These tips will make you a more enthusiastic, inventive, and productive cook.
1. PREP INGREDIENTS IN ADVANCE
Cooking successfully requires preparation. Before you begin to cook, chop, measure, and arrange your ingredients. This saves time and improves the efficiency and enjoyment of the entire cooking process.
2. USE KITCHEN GADGETS WISELY
While they can be extremely useful, kitchen appliances often occupy unnecessary space. Once you’ve determined the devices you use most often, make space for them. Simplifying your devices will help you cook more effectively and enjoyably.
3. SLOW DOWN ROTTING
To slow down the rate of deterioration, store tomatoes stem end down. This keeps moisture from escaping and air from getting into the scar where the tomato was originally attached to the vine.
4. GIVE BANANAS A LONGER LIFE
Wrapping the end of the bunch in plastic wrap will help keep bananas fresher for longer. Better still, separate each banana apart. Both tactics prevent the fruit from ripening too quickly by preventing ethylene gasses from escaping the stem.
5. PEEL POTATOES WITHOUT A PEELER
It’s time to give up the peeler! With a method known as blanching, you can peel a potato in a snap by boiling it for a few minutes and then giving it an ice bath. The skin will separate from the potato’s centre so you can pick it right off.
CONCLUSION
6.CLEAN AS YOU GO
Avoid creating a mess at the very end. Wash utensils, wipe down counters, and dispose of rubbish while you cook to keep things clean. Cooking is more fun and less daunting when the workspace is tidy.
Cooking can be an immensely fulfilling and pleasurable pastime when equipped with the correct tactics and suggestions. Using these techniques makes the procedure simpler, more enjoyable, and creative. Thus, implement these suggestions in your cooking, allowing them to lead you to a happier, more productive, and pleasurable culinary experience.
BEAUTY
The Power of Peptides
What They Are And Why You Need Them
BY DORCAS AKINTOYE
are a unique component with amazing effects in the constantly changing skincare industry. We must have heard about them, but do we truly understand their significance and how they work into your beauty regimen? This article will explore the world of peptides, including reasons why you should consider incorporating them into your skincare regimen.
WHAT ARE PEPTIDES?
The tiny chains of amino acids that make up proteins in our bodies are called peptides. These microscopic messengers instruct your skin to perform different tasks, such as increasing collagen production or self-healing. Our bodies create less collagen as we get older, which causes wrinkles and drooping skin. This is where peptides come in to provide a potent remedy to support the maintenance of young, healthy skin.
Peptides are well known for their capacity to increase collagen formation. As we age, collagen decreases, causing fine lines and wrinkles. By utilising skincare products loaded with peptides, you can help your skin create more collagen and fight against visible symptoms of ageing.
SKIN BARRIER
Your skin barrier depends on protecting your skin from microorganisms, the environment, and moisture loss. Peptides help strengthen this barrier to keep your skin robust and healthy. For your skin to remain smooth and supple, it needs a strong barrier that provides enhanced protection from the environment and better hydration.
Your skin’s ability to bounce back into place after stretching is called elasticity. Skin elasticity decreases with age, causing drooping and sagging. Peptides stimulate the synthesis of elastin fibres, which can increase skin suppleness. This translates to younger-looking, firmer, and more toned skin.
Acne, redness, and irritation are just a few of the skin conditions frequently caused by inflammation. Due to their anti-inflammatory qualities, peptides can relieve and calm inflamed skin. Peptides can also lessen redness, encourage an even skin tone, and stop acne by decreasing inflammation.
Peptides are vital to the body’s healing process. When used topically, they have the potential to expedite the healing process of lesions and wounds. People with scars from acne or other skin issues can especially benefit from this.
CONCLUSION
The secret to healthy, radiant skin is hydration. Peptides contribute to the skin’s increased hydration through improved moisture retention. Moisturised skin is less prone to dryness and irritation and is more robust. By adding peptides to your skincare regimen, you can guarantee that your skin remains nourished and hydrated, giving you a dewy and beautiful complexion.
With so many benefits that can completely change your beauty routine, peptides are a super element in skin care. Peptides provide your skin with complete treatment, from increasing the creation of collagen and improving skin suppleness to lowering inflammation and accelerating healing. Healthy, younger-looking skin can be attained by including peptide-rich products in your everyday routine.
Understanding Cholera
Causes, Symptoms, Treatment, And Prevention
BY JOHNSON CHUKWUEKE
Cholera is a severe diarrheal illness caused by infection of the intestine with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. The disease typically spreads through contaminated water and food, leading to severe dehydration. If left untreated, cholera can be terminal. As much as it’s easily preventable and treatable, cholera remains a significant public health issue in the country, especially in areas with unclean water and sanitary difficulties. Here, we will understand cholera and how to keep it at bay.
Causes
Cholera is primarily caused by ingesting food or water contaminated with Vibrio cholerae bacteria. The bacteria are usually found in water or food sources contaminated by an infected person’s faeces. Other causes are contaminated drinking water, washing food materials such as shellfish, raw fruits, and vegetables with contaminated water, improper waste disposal, and general poor hygiene.
Symptoms
Cholera symptoms can range from gentle to severe and are typically known to appear within two hours to five days after ingesting the bacteria. Severe diarrhoea, vomiting,
dehydration, muscle cramps, shock, and decreased urination are some of the most common symptoms associated with cholera. In severe cases, dehydration can lead to shock, which in turn can lead to death if not treated on time.
Diagnosis
If any of the mentioned symptoms occur in the slightest, seeking a diagnosis is the first step anyone should take.
A stool test can be carried out at your healthcare centre to identify the causal bacterium, Vibrio cholerae, from your stool sample. Rapid diagnostic tests are carried out for a faster diagnosis in a situation that requires urgency.
Treatment
Treatment should be taken immediately after one is diagnosed with cholera, as this is important to prevent death. Some of the primary treatments are rehydration through
Prevention
oral rehydration salts (ORS) or intravenous fluids in severe cases, antibiotics to reduce the duration of the illness and reduce the severity of the symptoms, and zinc supplements, which are also helpful in reducing the severity of diarrhoea in children.
Boil, chlorinate, or use water purification tools to ensure the water you use around the house is treated. Also, practice washing hands regularly with soap and water before and after using the toilet and eating. Cook your food thoroughly, avoid raw or undercooked foods, and cover food when not eating it. Oral cholera vaccines can provide short-term protection, so do well to get vaccinated.
Cholera is a preventable and treatable disease, but that should not make you feel less concerned as this disease is deadly. We can play our part as individuals to curb the spread of cholera and make our society free from this ailment.
TECHNOLOGY IN SPORTS
Tech Influences in Teams And Athlete Improvement
BY JOHNSON CHUKWUEKE
Analysis And Game Strategy
Harnessing technology for data analytics has become a cornerstone in modern sports. Coaches and analysts use sophisticated software to analyse players’ realtime performance. Metrics such as speed, heart rate, distance covered, and other vital stats are monitored to provide insights into an athlete’s strengths and areas for improvement.
Teams also leverage data analytics to develop game strategies. By analysing an opponent’s play patterns and weaknesses, teams can devise tactics to gain a competitive edge. For instance, tracking shooting patterns and defensive manoeuvres in basketball can help devise more effective game plans.
Rehabilitation
Virtual reality is also used in rehabilitation programs for injured athletes.
Injured players engage in interactive exercises in a virtual environment, which can aid in faster recovery and make the rehabilitation process more effective.
Training Simulations
Virtual reality and Augmented reality technologies provide profound training experiences. Athletes can practice in virtual environments that mimic realgame scenarios, thereby improving their skills without the physical strain. For example, football players can practice their plays in a simulated game, improving their decision-making and reaction times.
There’s no doubt that technology is being combined with different sectors of the economy, and the integration of technology in sports has improved how teams operate and how athletes, as individuals, train and perform. From data analytics to wearable technology, the advancements in technology have had a significant impact on every aspect of sports, and such effects have led to improved performance, injury prevention, and even better fan experiences as fans get to engage with their favourite teams and players much better. This week’s tech edition will explore how technology has influenced sports teams and athletes.
Health Monitoring
Wearable devices like fitness trackers and smartwatches allow continuous monitoring of an athlete’s health metrics, including heart rate, oxygen levels, and sleep patterns. This data helps understand an athlete’s physical condition and readiness for games. By monitoring vitals, personalised training regimens can be created for each athlete to suit individual needs.
Wearable tech also plays a crucial role in injury prevention. Sensors embedded in clothing or accessories can detect early signs of stress and fatigue, allowing athletes to change their training and avoid strain. This proactive approach reduces the risk of injuries and prolongs careers.
Technique Improvement
An athlete’s technique is essential in keeping them at the top of their game, and with high-speed cameras and motion analysis software, an athlete’s movements get captured in detail. By analysing the biomechanics, coaches can identify flaws in the technique and provide corrective measures. This technology is particularly beneficial in sports like golf, tennis, and swimming, where precision and technique are crucial.
The influence of technology on sports teams and athletes is profound and ever-growing. As technology continues to evolve, its role is bound to expand, leading to a more promising future where sports and tech are seamlessly interwoven.
LOVE LANGUAGES
And Their Impact on Relationships
1. WORDS OF AFFIRMATION
Communicating with words is how this love language is expressed. It’s important to give encouraging remarks, compliments, and pleasant words. When their partner says something positive to them, people who treasure words of affirmation feel more loved and valued. For them, even seemingly insignificant remarks like “You look great today,” “I’m proud of you,” or “I love you” can have profound meaning. Their relationship is strengthened, and their confidence increases when their partner takes the time to express these things. However, unfavourable or painful remarks might cause such individuals great pain.
2. ACTS OF SERVICE
Making your partner’s life easier or more joyful is what this love language is all about. Simple tasks like cooking, cleaning the house, or running errands could count. Actions speak louder than words for individuals who value doing acts of kindness. Their partner’s assistance with chores demonstrates thoughtfulness and care, which makes them feel loved and appreciated. It makes them feel less stressed and fosters a caring atmosphere. On the other hand, disregarding these behaviours could cause resentment or feelings of neglect.
BY DORCAS AKINTOYE
Even though it might be difficult to express, love is a strong force that can unite people. This is where love languages come in. Knowing these languages might make it easier for partners to express their love for one another, strengthening and enhancing their bond. We will examine these five love languages and how they affect relationships.
Giving and receiving tangible items is an integral part of this love language. The gifts don’t have to be expensive; what matters is the thinking and work that went into them. When their partner offers them something special, those who treasure receiving gifts feel valued and special. It demonstrates that their significant other values their happiness and thinks about them. A thoughtful present can be a memory keeper and a sign of love. They may feel irrelevant if thoughtless presents are given or special occasions are forgotten.
Your partner needs your attention if you want to communicate in this love language. It entails spending quality time together, engaging in conversation, and engaging in activities you both like without distractions. Being in the moment and actively involved in their relationship is essential for people who cherish quality time. It fortifies the emotional bond and produces enduring memories. Being present is important whether you’re having a meaningful conversation, engaging in a common hobby, or simply sitting down to eat. They may feel abandoned and unloved if you ignore them or are preoccupied at these moments.
CONCLUSION
Physical touch is one way to convey love in this love language. Physical affection, such as hugs, kisses, handholding, and so on, is essential. Touching someone physically can elicit strong emotions such as love, warmth, and comfort. Touch is the primary source of security and affection for those who respect this love language. Frequent physical contact fosters connection and a solid relationship. They may feel alone and unloved if they are not touched or are physically separated from you.
Learning to speak and understand your partner’s love language can transform your relationship. It allows you to show your partner how much you care and appreciate them. By learning and respecting each other’s love languages, couples can improve their emotional connection, lessen miscommunication, and create stronger bonds. Remember that learning to express your love in ways your partner finds meaningful is more important than trying to change who you are. This understanding can result in a more contented and joyful relationship for both parties.

Back in 2010, the original Despicable Me was a surprise smash and launched one of the most successful and longestlasting animation franchises ever. The secret, of course, is the Minions: those denim-clad yellow blobs of chummy chaos, amiably yearning to be the best sidekicks a villain ever had, even if they’re far too inept and friendly to spread evil. But the real success of the first film lay in its surprisingly sweet story, of wannabe supervillain Gru (Carrell, sporting an outrageous middle European accent) having his heart warmed by his three adopted daughters. Between the comedy of the Minions and the touching family story, Despicable Me won audiences over. The following Minions-centric prequels have leaned heavily on the comedy, but the Grucentric films of the eponymous Despicable Me series have lost track of what made the original so special.
Frankly, the continued determination to build up the now-reformed Gru’s home life and workdays at the Anti-Villain League has left the series so overstuffed that Despicable Me 4 has to lop off a whole limb of the family tree, with freshly introduced brother Dru among multiple familiar faces kept offscreen. Instead, there’s a whole new vanload of supporting characters and antagonists as Dru, the girls, wife and fellow AVL agent Lucy (Wiig), and their new baby, Junior, are sent to a safe house to avoid the threat of new villain Maxime Le Mal (Ferrell), who has turned himself into a giant cockroach.
The idea seems to make Gru and family fishes out of water – a bunch of lovable weirdos. But that’s the set up for the entire franchise, that everyday folks seemingly turn a blind eye to a madman and his little monsters living next door. Le Mal himself is the weakest villain in the series (and that’s saying something) and was seemingly written as a thin excuse to get another mid-2000s comedy star with a dodgy European accent in the cast. Once he’s there, he’s barely an afterthought. The script by Mike White (who may have been locked in the writer’s room by Illumination Studios after working on the superior Migration) and series co-creator Ken Daurio feels like a stack of B-plots stapled together rather than a full story. The girls taking up martial arts? Goes nowhere. Lucy becoming a hairdresser? Means nothing. Gru getting blackmailed by the rich girl next door? Comes out of nowhere, goes straight back there. There’s not even a payoff on the obvious setup of Gru’s Minions going toe-to-claw with Le Mal’s army of cockroaches.
Thank goodness, then, for the Minions themselves. Even they aren’t immune to the dead-end scripting, though with the superpowered Mega Minions failing to tug on Superman’s cape, but a recurrent gag about a vending machine provides a decent chuckle or two. Yet we have two Minions movies, and they still feel as weirdly fresh, funny, and endearing as ever. That’s what makes it all so disappointing that these films just can’t find a new scheme for Gru that’s as despicably delightful as the original.
Theidea of ordinary people suddenly being endowed with superpowers isn’t exactly new.
E4’sMisfits (2009-13), focused on young offenders doing community service who acquire various powers after being caught in a strange electrical storm.
It would seem, then, that Netflix’s new show Supacell, which concerns five unconnected young Black south Londoners who develop a variety of incredible powers, might have arrived a little too late in the game. Not least because of the time it has taken to reach the screen.
Filming on the series was completed more than a year ago, which is a long time to sit on the shelf. Also, the pre-publicity for Supacell has been comparatively low-key. But any suspicion that Netflix might have less than complete confidence in the series is quickly blown away by a terrific opening episode that unfolds at breakneck speed.
One of the things that sets Supacell apart from the superhero crowd is the absolute seriousness with which the series treats its fantastical material.
Seeing the five discover their abilities is thrilling fun, certainly, and the series is hugely entertaining. But director Rapman has made something that marries the visual dazzle of a Marvel movie (the cinematography and special effects are quite good) to a story of depth and substance that has much to say about racism and the gang-related knife crime that plagues many UK working-class communities.
Supacell opens with a middle-aged Black woman wearing a jumpsuit being pursued by heavily armed guards through what appears to be some kind of secret prison facility. When she reaches a dead end, her eyes glow yellow, and she unleashes a massive force that blows a hole through an outer wall.
She’s seconds from escape when a guard shoots her in the back. As her blood-soaked body is dragged through a corridor, we see other Black people
of various ages, all wearing the same kind of jumpsuit, being held in glass-fronted cells.
We then meet a delivery van driver called Michael (Tosin Cole), who’s in a stable relationship with his girlfriend Dionne (Adelayo Adedayo) and plans to propose to her during a meal at an upmarket restaurant.
As Micheal is making a delivery in a council estate, he’s menaced by a local gang led by Tazer (Josh Tedeku). When Michael refuses to pay the “charge” for entering the estate, Tazer stabs him.
As Michael lies on the ground, bleeding out, his eyes start to glow yellow and — whoosh! — he disappears into thin air. He finds himself living through the same events again, only this time Tazer lets him leave unharmed.
Michael, having tried hard to convince himself that what he experienced was either an extreme case of deja vu or a bizarre dream, proposes to Dionne and she accepts. During, let’s say, a passionate moment back at their apartment, Michael’s eyes glow and he vanishes again.
This time he lands in what appears to be a post-apocalyptic London and comes face to face with what he thinks is his double but is, in fact, himself in the future. He and four allies are engaged in a battle with hooded adversaries.
Future Michael tells present Michael that he has the power to travel through — and even freeze — time, and that he has jumped forward only three months. Then he whisks him off to show him Dionne’s grave. If he wants to save her life, he must go back and find his four future allies.
We’ve already met them and know that they too have unique superpowers: Sabrina (Nadine Mills), a telekinetic nurse; Andre (Eric Kofi Abrefa), a financially-pressed call centre worker with incredible strength; Rodney (Calvin Demba) a small-time weed dealer who can run super-fast, and none other than Tazer, who can become invisible — which comes in handy when he and his small crew are outnumbered by a rival gang.
Supacell might essentially be a superhero fantasy, but it’s one that keeps a foot planted firmly in a recognisably real world. Excellent.
