The Art of Mixing FASHION HIGH AND LOW FASHION

1. INVEST IN HIGH-FASHION PIECES

You can improve your entire wardrobe by investing in a few timeless, high-fashion pieces, like a well-fitting blazer, a classic handbag, or a great pair of shoes. These accessories are timeless and look great when worn with a variety of low-fashion pieces. A simple jeans-and-tee ensemble, for example, can seem effortlessly elegant when paired with a designer purse.

The ability to create distinctive, fashionable ensembles without going over budget is made possible by the growing trend of combining high and low fashion. Low fashion gives adaptability and day-to-day practicality, whereas high fashion, with its high-end brands and designer labels, provides elegance and prestige. Combining the two advances a sustainable approach to fashion while also showcasing personal style. Here, we explore ways to blend high fashion with low fashion seamlessly.

2. MIX STATEMENT PIECES WITH BASICS

A statement piece, like a high-fashion coat or an eye-catching accessory, can transform a basic outfit into something special. Pairing a high-end, bold item with simple, low-fashion basics like plain T-shirts, jeans, or neutral skirts allows the statement piece to stand out without overwhelming the look. This balance ensures you look stylish without trying too hard.

3. 5.

Combining various dimensions and textures can give your ensemble more depth and interest. Consider pairing an elegant silk top with affordable denim pants or a designer skirt with a comfortable, budgetfriendly sweater. Combining different fabrics, such as denim, leather, cotton, and silk, accentuates both high and low fashion elements in an eyecatching contrast.

One great way to successfully blend high and low fashion is through layering. You can achieve a beautiful, coordinated ensemble by layering an expensive scarf over an affordable cardigan or a designer jacket over an easy, inexpensive dress. Layers give an outfit depth and let you wear several items from your wardrobe at once, giving it a distinctive look.

4.

PLAY WITH PROPORTIONS AND TEXTURES LAYER STRATEGICALLY ACCESSORISE

SMARTLY

Accessorising is a fantastic method to combine high and low fashion. Any ensemble can be enhanced with an elegant scarf, a high-end watch, or designer sunglasses. On the other hand, fashionable yet reasonably priced hats, belts, and jewellery are available to go with your high-end ensembles. You can try out many looks and styles using this method without having to buy pricey stuff.

6.

EMBRACE HIGH-LOW

Combining high and low fashion requires careful attention to colour coordination. You can achieve a harmonious look by matching the colours of your expensive pieces with your inexpensive ones. For instance, a coordinated and put-together look can be achieved by accessorising a fancy blue dress with an affordable blue purse or matching a highfashion red coat with a low-fashion red top.

CONCLUSION

It takes skill to express your style sustainably and artistically by mixing high and low fashion. You can create beautiful, one-of-a-kind ensembles that highlight the best of both worlds by investing in classic pieces, combining statement pieces with basics, experimenting with proportions and textures, layering carefully, accessorising wisely, and embracing colour coordination. It also encourages a more thoughtful and adaptable wardrobe, so it does more than improve your sense of style.

DUPE OLUSOLA’S

Impact on Nigeria’s Hospitality Industry

Overthe years, the hospitality industry in Nigeria has experienced significant growth by evolving from being a growing sector to a thriving cornerstone of the nation’s economy. This growth was triggered by some factors, which include increased tourism, enhanced infrastructure, and a dedication to excellence. Concurrently, women’s roles in the corporate world have changed, with more of them taking on leadership positions in fields like hospitality that men have historically dominated. These changes have played a critical role in creating a more inclusive and dynamic industry.

Dupe Olusola, the dynamic Managing Director and CEO of Transcorp Hotels Plc is a prime example of this kind of leadership. She has demonstrated her adaptability and tenacity throughout her career.

She began her career in the banking sector at the United Bank for Africa (UBA) as the Group Head of Marketing. Later, she transitioned to the agribusiness sector as the Managing Director and CEO of Teragro Commodities Limited, a division of Transnational Corporation of Nigeria Plc (Transcorp Plc). Olusola became the second woman to run Transcorp Hotels Plc when she was appointed as Managing Director and CEO in 2020.

Under her direction, Transcorp Hotels has prospered. Olusola has brought new

ideas and creative approaches to the table, and she has even skillfully and gracefully handled the difficulties of working in a male-dominated field.

Dupe Olusola was recently honoured with the prestigious Hospitality Leadership Award in Windhoek, Namibia, by the Africa Hospitality Investment Forum (AHIF). The award comes barely two weeks after she was appointed to the Africa Advisory Board of Save the Children United Kingdom, underscoring her remarkable influence and leadership in the hospitality industry and beyond. This leading woman continues to set new benchmarks, driving excellence and innovation while championing important causes on the continent.

In this interview with THEWILL DOWNTOWN’s Executive Editor, Onah Nwachukwu, Dupe Olusola discusses her career, achievements, setbacks, and the hospitality industry.

What inspired your transition from the banking sector to agribusiness and the hospitality industry?

My transitions were inspired by a strong desire to leverage my skills in different sectors and make a meaningful impact. I love to work. I love to add value and achieve results. I am transformationfocused and I never think about the sector so long as I am making an impact and driving growth. Working in different sectors has taught me so much, and has contributed immensely to who I have become. I am grateful to have found fulfillment and to have been able to make a meaningful impact across different industries.

solutions to enhance guest experiences, streamline operations, and stay competitive. Simultaneously, we ensure that the core values of excellence, execution, and enterprise guide our approach to providing warmth, personalised services, and great experience to our esteemed guests.

“There is still a lot of room for women. This is not downplaying the impressive growth we have witnessed in recent times. However, women need to constantly put themselves out there to exploit opportunities to add value and deliver. ”

How do you see the role of women evolving in the corporate world, particularly in traditionally maledominated sectors like hospitality?

There is still a lot of room for women. This is not downplaying the impressive growth we have witnessed in recent times. However, women need to constantly put themselves out there to exploit opportunities to add value and deliver. Women must also invest in themselves; this is very important! No experience or opportunity that challenges or stretches them should be passed on. Once we have this mindset, it allows us to get more women at the table. Gone are the days when gender roles decided what jobs in hospitality were best suited for women; we have and are continuing to create a society where women experience a wider scope of the industry and have the power to choose which path they wish to follow. Generally, the role of women in the corporate world is evolving positively and rapidly. I am happy that women are increasingly recognised for their expertise and contributions. With ongoing efforts towards gender equality, support systems, and recognition of women’s contributions, I am optimistic that we will continue to see significant progress and an even playing field for all.

How do you balance innovation and tradition in managing a company like Transcorp Hotels, which operates in an industry with deep-rooted customs and practices?

Innovation is essential for growth and we fully embrace it because the only constant thing in life is change. However, we also embrace tradition and culture, ensuring we properly communicate this to all our employees. There are practices we hold dear; traditions that we have upheld for decades. However, as new systems, technology, and other tools are introduced, we do not shy away from evolving with them. Our goal is to continually improve our processes if and when needed to create value for our stakeholders. Balancing innovation and tradition involves respecting the rich heritage of hospitality while embracing modern technology and practices. At Transcorp Hotels, we invest in digital

How do you see the future of the Nigerian hospitality industry, considering factors like technology, changing consumer preferences, and global trends?

In your experience, what are some key factors driving success in the hospitality industry, and how have they evolved over the years?

Key factors driving success include exceptional customer service, consistent quality, innovation, and excellence. Over the years, the industry has evolved to prioritise personalised guest experiences, sustainability, and the integration of technology. Adapting to these trends while maintaining high standards of service is essential for continued success, understanding that our guests are our number one priority. Likewise, at Transcorp Hotels, our ability to adapt to changing market conditions, offer exceptional services, invest in technology and innovation, build strong relationships with guests and stakeholders, and maintain a strong brand image, have all helped us to stay ahead of the competition. We are consistently investing in the welfare and training of our staff to ensure they can uphold the quality of luxurious hospitality we are known for. We are always listening to the feedback of our guests, ensuring that their preferences are considered in all we do.

“I am

happy that women are increasingly recognised for their expertise and contributions. With ongoing efforts towards gender equality, support systems, and recognition of women’s contributions, I am optimistic that we will continue to see significant progress.”

As someone with a background in marketing, how do you approach branding and customer experience in the hospitality sector, where reputation is paramount?

“The ability and the opportunity to open myself up to learning and continuous growth. Looking back and never felt like my journey was static. These are the things I hold dear. ”

The true essence of hospitality is to deliver excellence and unique experiences. Our brand, Transcorp Hotels Plc, is known for delivering exceptional experiences to our different guests, bearing in mind that each customer is unique. Our approach to branding and customer experience relies heavily on consistency. Consistency in the promise and value we are communicating, consistency in our delivery across all touch points. Hospitality is personal. Hence, we continue to improve our data gathering and analysis to ensure we can continue to personalise experiences to the best of our abilities without compromising on quality. It is critical to remember that our success is dependent on trust and our stakeholders are our brand ambassadors who must trust us. Therefore, we continuously gather and act on their feedback. Effective marketing strategies combined with a relentless focus on customer satisfaction help maintain our stellar reputation.

The future of the Nigerian hospitality industry is bright, with technology playing a pivotal role in enhancing guest experiences and operational efficiency. Changing consumer preferences, such as a demand for sustainable practices and unique local experiences, will shape the industry’s offerings. I see more progress towards unique and niche accommodation. I see more asset-light strategies being developed and new experiences being created in the hospitality sector. Hospitality does not only speak to hotels but also restaurants, tourist attractions, events, and more. The COVID-19 pandemic awakened something in the sector; we are now in a time where things are done differently and executed excellently. In 2021, we launched Aura by Transcorp Hotels, our asset-light strategy that allows users to book unique homes, hotels, and experiences across Nigeria. Domestic tourism and staycations are here to stay, and I look forward to seeing how we explore the beauty and cultures of our nation. For example, leisure has become an integral revenue stream for us at our flagship property, the iconic Transcorp Hilton Abuja. Across the hospitality sector, we now have contactless check-in experiences, waiting robots, nightlife experiences that differ from place to place, and pods, a new accommodation style in Asia. AI is another innovation that is here to stay and I am excited for how we can effectively integrate these innovations to provide better services and experiences to our guests. I am also excited about the potential of the hospitality industry, already a major employer of labour, to create more jobs and contribute to the diversification of our economy.

What do you consider to be your greatest accomplishment or proudest moment in your professional journey so far?

Growth! The ability and the opportunity to open myself up to learning and continuous growth. Looking back and never felt like my journey was static. These are the things I hold dear. But we can also talk about the continuous improvement in our company’s diversity and inclusion efforts, resulting in better employee satisfaction, engagement, and increased profitability. This year, we have won the Hofstede Insights Award for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for the 4th consecutive year, beyond the several brand awards and accolades. Another great achievement considered by many by far the greatest is leading Transcorp Hotels Plc back to profitability after the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020, we lost about N1bn every month and ended the year with a loss of more than N10bn. Recovery did not seem in sight, but through innovation and commitment to our core values, we turned the corner and returned to profitability in 2021. This same company has continued to grow impressively and was earlier this year listed by the Financial Times as one of the fastest-growing companies in Africa.

What are some of the most rewarding aspects of leading a company like Transcorp Hotels, and what keeps you passionate about your work?

I am very grateful for my team and the guests that we serve. They make it all worth it. I am also very fortunate to be working in a diverse

COVER

group where I have enjoyed great exposure, experienced several industries, and had the opportunity to learn and contribute. Another rewarding aspect of my job is the opportunity to lead and inspire others. I take pride in creating a culture of excellence and empowering my team to achieve their full potential. Seeing my team succeed and grow is incredibly rewarding and motivating. Since I became the Managing Director/ CEO of Transcorp Hotels Plc, I have led my team out of one of the most challenging times in the company’s history to posting some of the best results the company has ever recorded. The great performances also came with awards; we won several awards over the years. Another rewarding factor is the opportunity to innovate and positively impact people’s lives through exceptional service. What keeps me passionate is the continuous pursuit of excellence and the desire to create memorable experiences for our guests. Every day brings new challenges and opportunities, making the work dynamic and fulfilling.

How do you maintain a healthy work-life balance while leading a prominent organisation like Transcorp Hotels?

Some say work-life balance is a myth; I prefer to call it work-life integration. You can never really balance it all because, based on your priority scale, one aspect of your life will trump the other. As an executive, wife, mother, daughter, friend, and as Dupe Olusola, I try as much as possible to prioritise and make sure I surround myself with people who genuinely care and are supportive of me, so they understand when I cannot give 100%. No matter what you do and who you are, there are only 24 hours in a day, but with the help of my family and team, I can effectively prioritise and integrate my personal life and work life. It is no easy feat however, with the right mindset and willingness to succeed at it, everyone can do it. Maintaining a healthy work-life integration requires prioritisation, delegation, and self-care. Allocate time for family, hobbies, and relaxation, just as you do for work responsibilities. It’s about finding harmony between professional commitments and personal well-being, and being mindful of when to step back and recharge.

being your authentic self and constantly seeking growth in all ramifications, producing great results. Success to me is having a well-rounded life, socially, emotionally, spiritually, mentally, physically, and financially. Success is pushing boundaries and redefining the status quo as an individual and a team to meet and exceed set objectives.

My definition of success has evolved throughout my career as my goals have also evolved. With more experience, more wisdom, and more insight, your definition of success ultimately changes. It’s about creating value and leaving a legacy that resonates beyond professional achievements.

What role do you believe mentorship plays in career development, and have you had any influential mentors throughout your journey?

Mentorship is crucial for career development. It provides guidance, support, and insights that can help navigate challenges and seize opportunities. I believe mentoring is topdown, bottom-up, and also sideways. I’ve been fortunate to have influential mentors who have shaped my thinking, encouraged my growth, and inspired me to strive for excellence. My mother, for example, always encouraged me to pursue my passions and never let anyone tell me that I couldn’t achieve my goals. My grandmother was also a great inspiration to me - she was a trailblazer in her field and never let the fact that she was a woman hold her back. Mentorship has been a cornerstone of my career, and I believe in paying it forward by mentoring others.

How do you personally define success, and how has your definition evolved throughout your career?

First off, I would like to establish that success is relative as it means different things to different people. For me, success is

Looking back on your career journey, what advice would you give to your younger self?

Hard work pays off! Don’t take no for an answer, continue to push boundaries. Be open to opportunities that come your way and do not let the fear of failing keep you from taking a chance on things, do it afraid. It is better than not doing it at all. Embrace every opportunity to learn and be resilient in the face of challenges. Stay true to your values and passions. Be adaptable, and seek out mentors. Trust the process and enjoy yourself while at it. Also, you are not an island; there is a limit to what you can do alone. Network and collaborate with like-minded people, and foster strategic partnerships for optimal growth. True wealth is in relationships. Above all, live your best life today. Maintaining a balance between ambition and well-being is key to a fulfilling career.

Mishkaki

Tanzania’s Culinary Delight

Among the many cultural festivals that adorn the African continent, the Der es Salaam Festival in Tanzania is one of the most celebrated. In this article, we delve into one of the most served meals in the Der es Salaam Festival: “Mishkaki.” This is basically a meal of grilled meat garnished with vegetables and spices, so let’s get into it.

Ingredients

• 1 kg of tender meat (beef, chicken, or lamb), cut into bite-sized cubes

• 1 onion, finely chopped

• 2 cloves of garlic, minced

• 1 tablespoon of fresh ginger, grated

• 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil

• 2 tablespoons of soy sauce

• 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce

• 1 tablespoon of tomato paste

• 1 teaspoon of paprika

• 1 teaspoon of ground cumin

• 1 teaspoon of ground coriander

• 1/2 teaspoon of ground black pepper

• Salt, to taste

• Wooden skewers, soaked in water for at least 30 minutes

Instructions

Marinate the Meat

In a large bowl, combine the chopped onion, minced garlic, grated ginger, vegetable oil, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, tomato paste, paprika, cumin, coriander, black pepper, and salt. Add the bite-sized meat cubes to the marinade, ensuring they are well coated. Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, preferably overnight, to allow the flavours to meld and the meat to tenderize.

Skewer the Meat

Preheat your grill to medium-high heat. If using charcoal, ensure the coals are evenly distributed and glowing red.

Thread the marinated meat cubes onto the soaked wooden skewers, leaving a small space between each piece to ensure even cooking.

Grill the Mishkaki

Place the skewers on the preheated grill, positioning them directly over the heat source.

Grill the Mishkaki for 8-10 minutes on each side or until the meat is cooked and has developed a golden-brown crust.

Baste the skewers with any remaining marinade or oil while grilling to keep the meat moist and flavourful.

Once cooked to your desired level of doneness, remove the Mishkaki from the grill and transfer them to a serving platter.

Serve and Enjoy.

The Mishkaki has always been a delicacy enjoyed at every yearly festival, and now you can enjoy the yumminess of Tanzania right in your home. Also do well to garnish the Mishkaki with freshly chopped cilantro or parsley, if desired.

Serve the grilled skewers hot alongside your favourite accompaniments, such as chapati, rice, or a crisp salad.

Don’t forget to provide some extra marinade or dipping sauce on the side for added flavour and indulgence.

Enjoy the succulent and aromatic flavours of Mishkaki with family and friends, savouring each bite of this delectable East African delicacy.

BEAUTY

Bar Soap, Body Wash, or Shower Gel

Key Differences & Which is Better?

Bar soap, body wash, and shower gel are just a few options for staying clean. Each one has its unique qualities, advantages, and applications. The primary distinctions between them will be elucidated in this article to assist you in selecting what is best for you.

WHAT IS BAR SOAP, BODY WASH, OR SHOWER GEL?

BAR SOAP

Bar soaps are solid cleaning agents derived from the salts of plant or animal fats. They assist in clearing your skin of debris, sweat, oil, and sebum. They achieve this by dissolving dirt and oil and facilitating their easier removal by water through the use of surfactants, which are chemical agents that surround dirt and oil. Sweat and grime can accumulate on your skin and grow bacteria as they combine with the natural oils in your body. Bar soaps remove germs from your skin by dissolving this greasy coating.

BODY WASH

Liquid cleansers, or body wash, have a pH of 6 to 7. They are usually designed to be softer and more moisturising than shower gels. Body washes use the same mechanism to remove dirt, oil, and sweat from the skin, but they also frequently include a blend of ingredients to help treat common skin conditions. You can safely use body wash if you have dry or sensitive skin, and it will also help you manage issues with clogged pores and flaking.

SHOWER GEL

Shower gels are liquid body cleansers made of synthetic detergents from either plant or petroleum sources. They often feel smooth on the skin, but on dry skin, they may feel tight and abrasive. For that, you can use shower cream instead because of its increased penetration and smooth, lotionlike texture.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN BAR SOAP, BODY WASH, AND SHOWER GEL

1.

Shower gels are thicker and more jelly-like in texture; the thickening polymer they contain increases their viscosity. Bar soaps are solid blocks that come in an array of eye-catching forms, hues, and designs. On the other hand, body washes are creamier and have a lotionlike texture.

2.

Shower gels provide longer scents due to a larger concentration of olfactory-pleasing ingredients. Body wash scents are subtle. Bar soaps, on the other hand, have far more scent than body wash and shower gel. Their scents are also long-lasting. They may be fragrancefree or perfumed with synthetic fragrance or essential oils.

4.

Shower gels, body washes, and bar soaps are all designed to help your body get clean. Remember to consider your skin type and the weather while selecting the best one for you. Shower gels have mild and relaxing ingredients and are made with a pH-balanced ingredient. They can successfully remove dead skin cells from your skin and have exfoliating qualities as well. Since they are hydrating, body washes are ideal for soothing dry skin. Some more recent body wash formulas include emulsified petrolatum, a common skin ointment that helps with dryness while cleansing the skin. Bar soaps can cause skin dryness if they are not medicated or enriched with moisturising substances. They might work if you use specially developed soaps produced with gentle ingredients. Antibacterial bar soap is another useful tool for getting rid of microorganisms and body odour.

3.

Surfactants, water, preservatives, aroma, emulsifiers, and detergents are typically used to formulate shower gels. Shower gels are made of water for consistency, surfactants for lather, and humectants for added moisturising qualities. Shower gels have an extended shelf life thanks to preservatives. On the other hand, body washes are made of ingredients like natural extracts, vitamin E, humectants, emulsifiers, surfactants, and essential oils. Through a procedure known as saponification, oils, fats, and an alkaline solution are combined to create bar soap. They include sodium palmate, sodium cocoate, and sodium tallowate, among other substances.

CONCLUSION

You can choose between shower gel, body wash, and bar soap depending on your lifestyle, skin type, and personal preferences. Bar soap is an excellent choice for individuals on a tight budget who also want to be environmentally friendly. Body wash is the best choice for people who need more moisture but have dry or sensitive skin. The shower gel is ideal for people who enjoy a scent boost throughout their shower routine because it provides a clean, revitalising, and refreshing experience. Whichever you select, there are distinct advantages to assist you in maintaining your cleanliness and well-being.

HEALTH

Tips on Beginning Your Quitting Journey

QUITTING SMOKING HEALTH WATCH

Challenges in life come in different forms, and one of these forms is addiction. Getting used to a habit that you know is bad for your well-being but you just can’t seem to stop, and one of them is smoking.

Quitting smoking is one of the most significant steps to improve your overall health and well-being. Smoking does a lot of damage to nearly every organ in the body, with the lungs being particularly vulnerable. However, the benefits of quitting are numerous, and they begin right from the moment you genuinely quit. Here are proven methods to quit smoking and help your lungs recover.

Attaining Healthier Lungs

It’s been advised to choose two weeks to stop smoking. This gives you enough time to prepare but isn’t so far away that you might lose motivation. One mistake people make is thinking quitting stops suddenly, but it starts in the mind.

Medications

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) offers products such as patches, gum, lozenges, nasal sprays, and inhalers that can help reduce withdrawal symptoms by providing a low level of nicotine without the harmful chemicals found in tobacco smoke.

Other medications, such as bupropion (Zyban) and varenicline (Chantix), can help reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms. However, it is paramount that you consult your healthcare provider to determine if these options are right for you. Sometimes, individual biological differences could hinder progress.

Smoking has more negative health effects than whatever benefit one may think it gives them. Consulting with your physician or seeking the support of a loved one is important while going through your quitting journey. Choose a date

At this point, you have to recognise the times, places, and situations where you are most likely to smoke. While preparing for your quit date, take some time to find out what triggers you to smoke and how to avoid these triggers or find healthier alternatives. Knowing what triggers your urges helps you know what you are dealing with and how to go about it.

Cardiovascular exercises like walking, running, and swimming are ideal options to improve lung capacity and overall lung function. Aiming for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week is a good start to your exercise routine, but you will need to progress from that point as time goes on.

An essential part of getting your health back is scheduling regular visits with your healthcare provider to monitor your lung health and address any issues early on. This way, you give feedback on what a certain medication has been like and if there needs to be some changes in your prescription. Do not selfdiagnose, as this is dangerous when you don’t know what you are dealing with. By having regular checkups, you get to keep track of your personal progress.

The Importance of SELF-CARE IN A RELATIONSHIP

Balancing taking care of yourself and your partner is essential to sustaining a healthy relationship. Frequently, we become so engrossed in the relationship that we neglect our own needs. Self-care is not only a trendy phrase, but it’s also an essential component of any happy relationship. Let us explore the importance of selfcare in a relationship.

1. MAINTAINING INDIVIDUAL IDENTITY

It’s easy to forget about your unique identity while in a relationship. You may become too dependent on each other and lose sight of your interests. Maintaining your interests and hobbies is facilitated by self-care. When you pursue your passions, you bring a more lively and fascinating version of yourself to the relationship. This individuality keeps the relationship fresh and exciting.

2. REDUCING STRESS AND AVOIDING BURNOUT

Relationships can sometimes add to the stress of daily life. By taking care of yourself, you may better control your stress and prevent burnout or depression. When you take time to unwind and rejuvenate, you’re less likely to vent your frustrations to your spouse. As a result, the relationship becomes more harmonious and peaceful.

3. PROMOTING EMOTIONAL STABILITY

A vital aspect of self-care is looking after your mental health. This could be scheduling time for oneself, engaging in mindful practices, or just speaking with a therapist. You can handle disagreements and communicate more effectively when you are emotionally stable. Your relationship will get stronger as a result of your partner appreciating your composed response to problems.

4. IMPROVING PHYSICAL HEALTH

Maintaining one’s physical health is as important as one’s mental health. To feel healthy physically, one must eat healthily, exercise, and get adequate sleep. Your relationship will benefit from your increased energy when you are healthy. Furthermore, caring for your body can improve your sense of self-worth, which has a beneficial effect on how you interact with your spouse.

6. ENHANCING COMMUNICATION

Acknowledging your own needs and boundaries is a crucial aspect of selfcare. It’s easier to express your needs to your spouse when you have a solid understanding of yourself. In addition to preventing misunderstandings, open communication makes both parties feel heard and valued. It’s easier to talk about and work through problems when you both care for yourselves, which strengthens your relationship.

5. ENCOURAGING MUTUAL RESPECT

By taking care of yourself, you set the bar for how you want to be treated. By demonstrating your worth to your partner, you inspire them to do the same. A solid relationship is built on this mutual respect. By caring for yourself, you encourage your partner to do the same, creating a respectful and caring cycle.

CONCLUSION

Taking care of oneself is essential; it is not selfish. You provide a better, more contented, and balanced version of yourself to the relationship when you look after yourself. This helps your relationship with your lover as well as yourself. Let’s not forget that a relationship is about two people coming together, and the best way to make that work is to make sure that each of them feels valued. Decide to take care of yourself, and you’ll see your relationship grow.

Youcan say what you like about Glen Powell. And many people do, however unfairly. But the star of Hit Man, Top Gun: Maverick and Anyone But You really knows how to pick a blockbuster because Twisters is set to be the box office smash of the summer.

Twisters is a reboot of 1996’s Twister, which was also a box office smash, raking in $494.5 million worldwide; perhaps a good indication of audience interest in weather-based action movies. But Twisters is unrelated to the original other than its characters being beset by tornadoes. A bad script would have killed it, especially as the original hardly has the cult following that brings an inbuilt audience — it wasn’t exactly a Top Gun: Maverick no-brainer.

Twisters follows the story of Kate Cooper (Daisy Edgar-Jones), an Oklahoma native with a knack for predicting tornadoes and a desire to minimise their damage. “The worse the weather, the happier the girl,” her mother Cathy (Maura Tierney) says. Until one of Kate’s beloved tornadoes does what tornadoes do best, and sucks up a bunch of her loved ones, making Kate very unhappy. It’s a devastating loss that shows Twisters means business, straight out of the gate.

Five years later, Javi (Anthony Ramos), the lovelorn last remaining member of Kate’s storm-hunting crew, turns up at her fancy new New York job to try and reel her back in. You know the drill. There’s an unprecedented amount of tornadoes plaguing Oklahoma at the moment, and Kate’s the only one who can help them work out why. And maybe, just maybe, she could help put a stop to it.

As Kate returns to Oklahoma to follow her chimeras and chase down tornados, she’s introduced to twisterchasing cowboy and former bull rider Tyler Owens (Glen Powell), who is as irritating as he is endearing. While Kate and her science boys track the twisters for science, he and his rag-tag

group of enjoyable hick weirdos (played by Sasha Blane, Brandon Perea, Tunde Adebimpe and Katy O’Brian, all marvelous) drive straight into the eye of the storm and set fireworks off in it.

The two groups butt heads throughout, with their division just as enjoyable as their inevitable acquiescence. Powell and EdgarJones are natural leads, with enough charisma to do it alone. But Twisters actually plays like an accidental ensemble movie, and its supporting cast members make it sing.

The action is equal parts thrilling and emotional, with one particularly good scene in a motel swimming pool that echoes Kate’s first tornado accident being so intense and unyielding that it felt like the whole cinema went through a joint panic attack.

It has its cheesy moments, of course - like the multiple shots of a “See You In Hail” bumper sticker, or the moment when Kate drives home to her Oklahoma farm for the first time in years and Lainey Wilson croons. While it does seem willfully negligent in its lack of referencing climate change, even when that path has been nicely laid out by the best climate thrillers of our past (i.e The Day After Tomorrow).

But ultimately, it’s a thrilling, smarter-than-it-seems blockbuster, not necessarily in its science but in its writing, action and tightness. So much so that people in my screening clapped at the endsomething I haven’t seen in a few years. And, also for the first time in years, the film ended about 30 minutes before I thought it would, thanks to its reasonable two hour two minutes runtime. All in all, it left me wanting more. Glen Powell, you’ve done it again.

THE BOYS SEASON 4 REVIEW

The Boys began with an intriguing question for our superhero-obsessed pop culture – namely, what would happen if extraordinary powers were wedded with corruption, neuroses and corporate greed? Yet that dark, satirical take on the genre has blossomed into TV’s most political drama, a quality even more overtly on display in its muchanticipated fourth season.

The fourth season features the usual conflict between superheroes in the uneasy employ of Vought International and those who oppose them. The former cohort begins with the near-invincible, psychopathic Homelander (Antony Starr), whose Supermanlike public persona is carefully manicured to hide those qualities, while the latter take their lead from Billy Butcher (Karl Urban), even if they frequently question his methods.

The Butcher-Homelander standoff is complicated by their battle for the soul of the latter’s biological son, Ryan (Cameron Crovetti), which itself encompasses consideration of the question of nature versus nature.

More than any season before it, the new arc leans into the political realm thanks to the involvement of politician Victoria Neuman (Claudia Doumit), and efforts by Vought and Homelander to impact the political debate.

That includes thinly-veiled references to a group clearly intended to represent QAnon, the conspiracyminded movement, and the use of propaganda tactics to manipulate the public and voters. At one point, the characters attend an event called Truthcon, where a banner that reads “There are no conspiracies – or coincidences” is prominently flown.

The show also reveals the private disdain of those in (and with) power toward their supporters, a point made in a uniquely The Boys-esque manner.

To punctuate that, there’s a new hero, Firecracker (Valorie Curry), whose political leanings echo Vought News’ conservative commentators (she even gets her own show). As series creator Eric Kripke told Entertainment Weekly, the character serves as a surrogate for “conspiracyminded movements and the super extreme right-wing news media.”

Dispensing with subtlety, Kripke and company have surrounded that satire in violence and excess, qualities that feel organic to this world, where the traditional ideal of heroism is used to obscure brutal realities. Although The Deep (Chace Crawford), an Aquamanlike member of the Vought-backed superhero team known as the Seven, is often a semi-pathetic source of derision, he sums that mentality up when he comes to the realisation, as he puts it, “Violence is power.”

Inevitably, the new season involves

new, unexpected and uneasy alliances, as well as the thorny (and seemingly perennial) issue of finding ways to neutralise Homelander, which hardly feels like a fair fight.

Having earned its reputation as the most gruesome and kinky show on television, The Boys grapples with a certain pressure to fulfil those expectations for the faithful. In its totality, the eight-episode season largely manages to clear that bar (or should one prefer, limbo under it), including a few explosively funny (and not incidentally, grisly) visual gags.

Success has also enabled The Boys to play a long game, meaning nobody should expect too much closure from this season when there’s a fifth and final season to come. From that view, the series might have lost some of its freshness but not its ability to surprise and provoke, peeling back its mask a little further to issue a warning about the danger of brightly coloured fascism, a message clearly intended to echo beyond its world and into ours.
