Thisweek our cover story centres on cryptocurrency. This digital currency is becoming more and more popular. I remember meeting a lady at a digital event, and she offered to educate me on how to trade with cryptocurrency. I didn’t trust it, and might I say that was the last time I discussed it until our TOC (table of content) meeting for this issue. We highlight all you need to know about cryptocurrency in this week’s pages 8 through 10.

It’s Father’s Day today. The one day set apart to show dad how much you love and appreciate him for all the sacrifices he makes, so we share a simple lunch recipe you can cook for him to say, ‘Thank you for everything.’

The timeless appeal of well-fitted suits, crisp shirts, and polished shoes has managed to effortlessly find its way back into the modern wardrobe as men’s desire to embrace the sophistication and refinement of bygone eras

2Over the years, one of the unique things that has revolutionized men’s style is the rise of casual fashion. The idea of dressing down while still looking stylish has become increasingly popular. Men now go for tailored chinos and versatile t-shirts as a foundation for their everyday outfits, blurring the lines between formal and informal attire.

.ATHLEISURE

So far, athleisure has made a significant impact on men’s fashion, offering a perfect blend of comfort and style. Incorporating athletic wear into everyday outfits is one of the trends in the fashion world that has become mainstream. Men are embracing joggers, hoodies, and sneakers not only for workouts but also as fashion statements, redefining the barriers of traditional menswear.

. GENDER FLUIDITY

Over the years, the fashion industry has witnessed a paradigm shift towards inclusivity and gender-fluidity. Men’s fashion has experienced a surge in non-binary and genderneutral styles, giving men the opportunity to express themselves authentically and intentionally. Unconventional silhouettes, experimental cuts, and diverse colour palettes have helped open doors to a more inclusive and expressive form of men’s fashion.

With the growing awareness of environmental concerns, sustainable fashion has gained traction in menswear. Over the years, men have been going for ethically produced and ecofriendly clothing, embracing organic fabrics, recycled materials, and responsible manufacturing practices. Apart from the fact that this trend demonstrates a commitment to the planet, it also reflects a sense of conscientiousness in personal style choices.

6. STREETWEAR INFLUENCE

The influence of streetwear on men’s fashion cannot be underestimated. Streetwear has become one of the dominant forces in shaping trends. Hoodies, graphic tees, sneakers, and statement accessories, among others, have become integral parts of men’s style, reflecting a youthful and urban

Men are embracing the power of prints and patterns as a means of self-expression. Today, bold florals, geometric motifs, and abstract designs are making their way into shirts, jackets, and even tailored suits. This trend assists men in stepping out of their comfort zones, allowing them to embrace vibrant colours and eye-catching designs, adding an element of excitement to their wardrobes.

8.STATEMENT ACCESSORIES

Accessories have become a focal point in men’s fashion, allowing individuals to add personality and flair to their outfits. From oversized sunglasses to patterned socks to colourful pocket squares and distinctive timepieces, accessories offer opportunities to elevate any look. These carefully chosen accents help serve as conversation starters, and most importantly, they help convey a sense of individuality.

DOWNTOWN CONFIDENTIAL

Since the dawn of civilisation, the concept of money has been at the core of human interactions, enabling trade, commerce, and the exchange of goods and services. From primitive barter systems to the rise of modern fiat currencies, the evolution of money has been intertwined with the story of human progress. However, a new contender has emerged on the financial landscape in recent years: cryptocurrency.

Cryptocurrency, with its decentralised nature and cryptographic technology, has captivated the imaginations of tech enthusiasts, economists, and investors alike. It promises a revolutionary shift in how we perceive and utilise money, with some even suggesting that it could become a new form of legal tender. As we delve into the rich tapestry of the history of money and the potential implications of cryptocurrency as a legal tender, we uncover a world of possibilities, merits, and demerits that challenge conventional notions of monetary systems.

The Evolution of Money

To understand the potential impact of cryptocurrency on our financial systems, we must first trace the evolution of money throughout human history. From ancient civilisations using seashells, livestock, and precious metals as mediums of exchange to the development of standardised coins and paper money, each era brought new challenges and opportunities in the quest for a reliable and efficient currency.

The Rise of Cryptocurrency

Enter the digital age, where cryptography, computer networks, and blockchain technology paved the way for the birth of cryptocurrencies. Bitcoin, created by the enigmatic Satoshi Nakamoto, emerged as the first decentralised digital currency, introducing a new

MONEY REIMAGINED

paradigm of financial transactions that bypassed traditional intermediaries. As the success and popularity of Bitcoin grew, a wave of alternative cryptocurrencies followed, each with its unique features and visions for the future.

Exploring the Potential of Cryptocurrency as Legal Tender

With the widespread adoption of cryptocurrencies and the growing acceptance from mainstream institutions, questions arise about the potential for cryptocurrency to become a recognised legal tender. We examine the merits and possibilities that such a shift could offer, from enhanced transaction security and reduced costs to financial inclusion and borderless transactions. We also delve into the challenges and demerits, such as regulatory concerns, price volatility, scalability, and environmental impact.

Navigating the Path Forward

As governments and financial institutions grapple with the emergence of cryptocurrency, we explore the strategies being employed to adapt and regulate this new digital frontier. We examine the experiences of countries that have embraced or rejected cryptocurrencies, the evolving regulatory landscape, and the potential impact on global financial stability and economic sovereignty.

The Binance Saga

The Securities and Exchange Commission has ruled that Binance’s operations are illegal in Nigeria, which might make it even harder for ordinary Nigerians to access cryptocurrencies.

This is in accordance with a circular posted online by the commission on June 9, 2023. The commission declared that Binance is operating illegally in the country because it is neither registered with it nor subject to its regulation.

It was stated that using the exchange for commerce was done at the user’s risk. The Securities and Exchange Commission (the Commission) has been alerted to a website run by Binance Nigeria Limited that invites Nigerians to trade cryptocurrencies on its various web and mobile platforms.

“Binance Nigeria Limited is neither registered nor regulated by the Commission, and its operations in Nigeria are therefore illegal. Any member of the investing public dealing with the entity is doing so at their own risk.”

The commission also cautioned Nigerians against investing in cryptocurrencies and financial services and goods related to them if the platform or service provider is not one of its registered or regulated entities.

It added, “Nigerian investors are hereby warned that investing in crypto-assets is extremely risky and may result in total loss of their investment. By this circular, Binance Nigeria Limited is hereby directed to immediately stop soliciting Nigerian investors in any form whatsoever.”

The SEC also announced that it would update the public on any additional regulatory measures relating to the operations of Binance Nigeria Limited and other platforms of the same nature. It would also collaborate with other national regulators to offer more clarification on this subject.

The biggest cryptocurrency platform in the world, Binance, has been involved in various legal disputes worldwide.

The US Securities and Exchange Commission charged Binance with violating US laws on Monday. Binance US

announced a fortnight ago that it was halting deposits and withdrawals made in US dollars due to SEC enforcement action.

Binance said, “In an effort to protect our customers and platform, today we are suspending USD deposits and notifying customers that our banking partners are preparing to pause fiat (USD) withdrawal channels as early as June 13, 2023. We encourage customers to take appropriate action with their USD.”

The SEC’s action is expected to shake up the cryptocurrency sector, especially in light of recent problems with other well-known platforms like Paxful. Another significant cryptocurrency platform, Paxful, ceased down in April 2023 as a result of regulatory issues and substantial personnel departures.

Is Cryptocurrency Allowed in Nigeria?

Since the introduction of Bitcoin (BTC) in 2009, the cryptocurrency landscape has rapidly expanded. Governments all across the world are working continuously to create laws, policies, and guidelines to prevent fraud while promoting blockchain and digital asset innovation. For instance, Nigeria, the most populous nation in Africa, has been active in defining its cryptocurrency regulations for the region’s tech-savvy, pro-blockchain young, who are ready to accept digital assets.

The framework governing digital assets and Cryptocurrency rules in Nigeria have since been revised this past week. But first, let’s examine Nigeria’s broader crypto sector to better appreciate its potential growth and the necessity of parallel regulatory regulations.

Its Adoption and Growth

A Google Trends data analysis by CoinGecko revealed Nigeria to be one of the most cryptocurrency-curious countries, which brought Nigeria’s growing interest in cryptocurrencies to the fore during the crypto market meltdown in April 2022. The analysis of search data from several countries highlighted the popularity of cryptocurrencies in Nigeria despite a recent decline in cryptocurrency prices.

Nigeria was listed in a Chainalysis analysis as one of the top nations with a high Global Crypto Adoption Index, particularly in peer-to-peer (P2P) trade. The top cryptocurrency exchanges in Nigeria for P2P trading and investing are KuCoin and Paxful.

Inadequate financial services, high inflation, the depreciation of Nigeria’s fiat currency, the naira, and a young population (53.7% of Nigeria’s population is between the ages of 15 and 65) are the main drivers of this rise in Nigeria. Today’s tech-savvy Nigerian

at employment, investment, and financial freedom. In Nigeria, blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies have created new opportunities and growth paths.

Nigerian market regulators published a set of rules for digital assets in May 2022 as a result of growing use, indicating that the nation is attempting to find a compromise between an absolute ban on digital assets and their potential usage.

Its Legality

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) does not

accept cryptocurrencies as legal money. The CBN forbade Nigerian commercial banks from conducting any cryptocurrency transactions in February 2021. The CBN made it plain that the Nigerian financial system and banking sector will not be connected to cryptocurrency trading in an effort to safeguard citizens from illicit and fraudulent crypto activities.

However, the bank has also noted that in the near future, cryptocurrencies could increase financial inclusion and transparency in the nation.

Cryptocurrency is not prohibited in Nigeria. However, Nigeria has no cryptocurrency laws, legislation, legal act, or regulations that make using cryptocurrencies illegal. On the other hand, Nigerian cryptocurrency exchanges see a lot of trading. Simply put, they are not a part of the nation’s financial industry.

The peer-to-peer market in the nation gained popularity because of this. P2P trading, or exchanging cryptocurrency with another person directly, is widely employed in Nigerian cryptocurrency trade. Indeed, the first two quarters of 2022 saw over $400 million in Bitcoin trade volume for Nigeria, making Nigeria its largest market internationally, according to Paxful, a P2P exchange in Nigeria. Despite the CBN’s ban on cryptocurrency, P2P trading is still used by Nigerians.

Local Bitcoin meetups and communities are other places where people may learn more about cryptocurrencies and how to use them. But it’s vital to remember that trading in cryptocurrencies involves a high amount of risk; therefore, before making any investments, one must fully inform themselves.

Is it Regulated?

Following the CBN’s ban and in light of cryptocurrencies’ rising popularity in the nation, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of Nigeria decided to set up crypto regulation in the country. A thorough 54-page report titled “New Rules on Issuance, Offering Platforms, and Custody of Digital Assets” was posted on the website

PAGE 9 THEWILL DOWNTOWN • www.thewilldowntown.com VOL 3 NO. 25 • JUNE 18, 2023 COVER
George Residence announced they were accepting crypto payments back in 2021 before the crypto laws

of the SEC (Nigeria) in May 2022.

This agreement provides access to Bitcoin service providers in Nigeria and lays rules for how the nation’s banking and financial institutions should deal with digital assets.

The document also clarified and defined digital assets in Nigeria and reiterated that the Nigerian SEC would oversee all token sales, ICOs, and other blockchain-based offerings made in Nigeria by both domestic and foreign issuers that target Nigerian citizens.

Crypto Asset Rules in Nigeria for Crypto Exchanges

All cryptocurrency exchanges offering services in Nigeria must obtain a permit under the new regulations of the Nigerian SEC, which grants the SEC access to their records. A digital asset exchange (DAX) is defined by the Nigerian regulations on digital assets as “an electronic platform that facilitates the trading of a virtual asset or digital asset.”

Additionally, they define a virtual or digital asset as a digital representation of value that can be utilised for investment, trade, payment, or transfer purposes, which includes cryptocurrencies.

According to SEC regulations, these DAXs must now submit an application and pay the required application processing, registration fee, and other expenses in order to receive a virtual asset service provider (VASP) license from the SEC.

Additionally, crypto exchanges must demonstrate that they have at least 500 million naira in paid-up capital and a current fidelity bond that covers at least 25% of that amount.

To reduce cyber risks, a licensed DAX will need to adhere to SEC rules, submit an undertaking, assure the

availability of documents, ensure the availability of staff and resources, implement security measures, and manage risk. They will also need to hire a chief information security officer.

Can You Cash Out Crypto For Fiat in Nigeria?

It sure is challenging to convert cryptocurrencies into fiat since the banking sector in Nigeria has clearly distanced itself from cryptocurrencies as a result of the CBN’s ban. Although conversion to local currency is difficult, Nigerian businesses and people have started embracing cryptocurrency to send and receive payments.

Due to its ability to sell cryptocurrencies for naira immediately in a bank account in 2022, Breet App became increasingly popular in African countries, including Nigeria. Since it is not a cryptocurrency exchange, buying or trading in cryptocurrencies is not possible.

Breet App is a straightforward automatic cryptoto-fiat smartphone application that can convert several cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), Dogecoin (DOGE), Litecoin (LTC), and stablecoins to naira and allow withdrawals from a Nigerian bank account. It is accessible on Google Play Store and Apple Store.

One can sell bitcoins and get paid in local currency by using a cryptocurrency broker like BitPesa, which provides brokerage services. In addition, P2P marketplaces assist in locating willing sellers who may accept local cash in return for cryptocurrency.

Is it Taxable in Nigeria?

In February 2021, the Central Bank of Nigeria released a directive in Nigeria advocating caution when dealing with cryptocurrencies and stressing

that they are not legal money. In Nigeria, there isn’t presently a formal tax law governing cryptocurrencies. According to the Federal Inland Revenue Service, cryptocurrency transactions are taxable as capital gains. Therefore, if the proposed Finance Bill is enacted, the Nigerian government intends to tax cryptocurrencies and digital assets in the future. The bill will cover capital gains from digital assets and include taxation rules for online lotteries and gaming companies that use digital assets. This proposed measure seeks to increase cross-border growth and regulation for Nigerian residents and institutions while taxing cryptocurrencies and digital assets in Nigeria in accordance with international taxation standards.

The Future of Cryptocurrency in Nigeria

While Nigeria has demonstrated widespread grassroots adoption of P2P crypto markets and a high level of social acceptance of cryptocurrencies, it still lags in other areas, such as institutional adoption of cryptocurrencies and blockchain-based ledger technologies and on-off crypto ramps, crypto retail trading, and decentralised finance (DeFi).

These trends, which one should watch out for, will determine the direction of cryptocurrencies in Nigeria in the future:

As a Medium of Payment

Nigeria will investigate the use of cryptocurrency as a form of payment for retail sales, crossborder transactions, and faster remittances as an alternative to the current cumbersome and slow fiat transfer issues. Nigerians are crypto-friendly; thus, many businesses and online marketplaces would take cryptocurrencies as payment for their products and services.

As a Medium of Investment

Nigerians already view cryptocurrency as a way to store wealth and protect their investment in the face of rising inflation and ongoing naira depreciation. The value of the naira has been declining over the past ten years, and the young population has lost faith in it. As a result, many Nigerians are already investing in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. These investments would result in legitimacy, giving the typical Nigerian citizen more confidence in cryptocurrencies as a means of payment, trade, and investment now that regulatory authorities are in place and the proposed Finance Bill has been presented.

In Finality

The history of money is an ever-evolving narrative of innovation, trust, and societal progress. Cryptocurrency, with its disruptive potential and decentralised nature, represents a new chapter in this ongoing story. As we weigh cryptocurrency’s possibilities, merits, and demerits as a potential legal tender, we find ourselves at a crossroads of opportunity and uncertainty. The digital revolution may transform the future of money, and our choices will shape the financial landscape for generations to

Beauty Traditions Exploring ACROSS CULTURES

(1) NIGERIA

For centuries, Nigerian women have been using African black soap. These soaps are made from natural ingredients, including plantain skins, palm oil, cocoa pod ash, etc. All these ingredients are known for their exfoliating and moisturising properties. In protecting their skin from the harsh African sun, they use a mixture of shea butter and coconut oil.

(2) ETHIOPIA

Ethiopia’s beauty traditions revolve around natural ingredients like honey and coffee. They use honey to moisturise their skin and hair, while coffee exfoliates and brightens the skin. Ethiopia is also known for its traditional braiding styles, which include intricate cornrows and twists.

Oneof the things that makes beauty traditions fascinating to explore is that they go a long way in showcasing the different cultural beliefs and practices that have shaped beauty standards and rituals across diverse regions and periods. Beauty has always been a significant part of human history; from ancient beauty practices used by Egyptian queens to modern-day Korean skincare routines, the significant impacts of these beauty practices cannot be forgotten. Every culture is unique as it has its beauty standards, often influenced by geography, climate, religion, and societal norms. Some beauty traditions involve using natural ingredients like herbs, plants, minerals, etc., while others involve specific tools and techniques.

Many cultures view beauty as an integral part of one’s self-expression and identity. In most cases, they are often tied to concepts of spirituality, health, and social status. Using African cultures as a case study; they have several traditional beauty practices, which include tribal scars, intricate hairstyles and so on. These practices served as a symbol of cultural identity and tribal affiliation. Beauty practices in some other cultures may be associated with religious beliefs or, in most cases, used to enhance sexual appeal and fertility.

The beauty industry has greatly helped popularise and commercialise beauty practices from different cultures. One of the ways they were able to achieve that is by making these beauty practices accessible to a broader audience. Most global beauty trends and product innovations are often inspired by traditional beauty practices worldwide. However, natural ingredients like argan oil, turmeric, and shea butter are used in many modern skincare and haircare products.

(3) GHANA

In Ghana, shea butter is used for different purposes. Apart from the fact that they use it for their beauty routine, they also incorporate it into their daily diets. Ghana is known for its shea butter production, and they use this butter for cooking traditional dishes and use it as a skin and hair moisturiser. Ghanaian women also use a natural called “Nsu” for skincare purposes.

VOL 3 NO. 25 • JUNE 18, 2023 PAGE 12 THEWILL DOWNTOWN • www.thewilldowntown.com BEAUTY

In Japan, their beauty standard revolves around flawless, porcelain skin. For centuries, women in Japan used rice water to cleanse and brighten their skin. After soaking uncooked rice in water, they would use the resulting liquid as a facial wash. This ancient beauty practice is still popular and is known for improving skin clarity and texture.

In South Africa, the Xhosa people use white clay called “UMCHOLO” for beauty purposes. They apply this clay to their face and body to help with skin conditions like acne and eczema. The country is also known for its traditional beadwork, often incorporated into hairstyles and jewellery production.

BEAUTY

Moving on to India, their beauty tradition is all about haircare. Indian women are popularly known for their long, lustrous hair, which they maintain with natural oils like coconut and sesame. Another popular beauty practice of Indians is the application of henna, a natural dye that helps colour their hair while nourishing it, leaving it silky and shiny.

Beauty practices in this country date back to ancient times. Egyptian queens like Cleopatra were known for their striking beauty, and their secret was using black kohl eyeliner. These eyeliners were made from crushed minerals, and then they would be mixed with oils. Apart from the fact that these eyeliners helped enhance their eye beauty, they were also used to protect them from the harsh desert sun.

In South Korea, beauty is about achieving a flawless, youthful complexion. The Korean skincare routine involves a different process that includes cleansing, toning, moisturising, and using serums and masks. Most of the products used in this routine contain natural ingredients like green tea, ginseng and so on, and these ingredients are known for their anti-ageing and brightening properties.

In the Middle East, religious and cultural practices highly influence their beauty traditions. One of the most well-known beauty practices is the application of henna tattoos. They apply these intricate designs to their hands and feet for special events like weddings or religious festivals.

FIRST LOOK: Emmy Kasbit’s Atelier

THE ATELIER CONCEPTUALISATION…

It was about creating a platform where we could engage more with our client base on a more interactive note. In the past years, we’ve done a lot of shows in different parts of the world, and we’ve done a lot of bespoke, but we’ve never really had that interactive space where customers, clients, friends and stakeholders of the brand could actually walk into and experience Emmy Kasbit as a brand, but not just as a brand, as a concept.

THE COLLECTIONS…

It was important to engage the customers through different architectural elements, and that goes from the structure of the place. The colours that were used are very neutral; it’s almost like a blank canvas. It was very important to have that because the designs are what speak for us as a brand. The designs, cuts, and silhouettes are very traditional to Emmy Kasbit as a brand, so we’re using indigenous fabric, akwete, a traditional handwoven fabric, to create traditional, modern and timeless pieces so inasmuch as the space is a very beautiful space, what then enhances in terms of beauty and invoking all the different elements and senses of the human body are the clothes—they speak a language of themselves and are able to communicate different emotions to different consumers.

FINDING BALANCE BETWEEN ACCESSIBILITY AND EXCLUSIVITY…

Our interaction with fashion happens daily. Whether we are adding a new pair of heels that caught our attention to our digital cart or finding inspiration for a new look on a magazine centre spread, how we consume fashion transcends way beyond the occasionally immersive experience of watching a live runway show.

Having become a household name in the fashion industry thanks to the quality and consistency that aid its longevity and sustained it for almost a decade, Emmy Kasbit finally creates a lasting showroom experience that will allow friends and stakeholders of the brand a much longer interaction with the brand. In a chat with Kehindé Fagbule, he gives us a first

For us at Emmy Kasbit, we know our audience, and one of the most beautiful things is being able to interact with a new audience through transitions of different collections of our core target audience. We’ve also noticed that over the past years, as new collections are launched into the fashion ecosystem, we always get a new followership of people who are able to identify with elements from the collection. Every collection through all the seasons has been birthed through cultural and historical events in Nigeria, with many references coming from the Eastern part of Nigeria. When

these collections come out, we are basically telling the story of culture, history, traditions and values through garments. The core ecosystem of Emmy Kasbit, the followership is amazing, and through the designs of each piece of garment in each collection, it appeals to a certain demographic. So we might have a collection, Spring/Summer ’24 coming up. We might have 30 to 40 looks, and each garment in that collection will appeal to a certain person. So when the collections are released, of course, we are releasing them in limited editions, so we can have 500 of each look. We then don’t say, “this is for you; you can’t buy this,” because it is for everybody.

CLIMATE CONTRIBUTION…

At the atelier, we are very sustainable in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). With the design, we are very minimal. A lot of wood was reused, upcycled, recycled, and this is just our commitment to contribute positively to our SDGs.

COLLABORATIONS…

For collaborations, we always look at it from a different point of view. Our major number one objective for collaboration is with the community, not just with brands or different stakeholders. Our first source and most important objective for collaboration is the community that works with us. This goes down to our artisans in the East, the women that work with us, weave for the brand, and the women that continue to teach the DNA of who, what and how Emmy Kasbit is as a brand. That is our major community collaboration, taking these skilled artisans, working with them, providing a source of income for them, and giving back to the community, not just their families, children and husbands, but the whole community at large. Of course, taking it a step further, we have local sustainable jewellery makers that work with us on different collections, we have shoemakers that design shoes with us for collections, and then you go into the large ecosystem of collaborations, partnerships and delivering season after season. It is a large ecosystem with a lot of stakeholders involved, but we take it a step further because collaboration and commitment for us are working with our own artisans in our own artisan hub and creating and developing something unique that stands the test of time and make the brand who we continue to be.

FUTURE PROJECTS…

We are really excited; there are a couple of projects on the way. First of all, of course, we are looking forward to the Spring/Summer ’24 collection, which will definitely be showcased at the Lagos Fashion Week. We are all eagerly looking forward to that. Secondly, we are also coming up to our 10th anniversary next year, so that’s going to be a big deal to celebrate 10 years in the fashion industry in Nigeria, Africa and the world at large. As for the atelier, the plan is to continue to be more of an interactive space for people from different walks of life to come and experience the brand, engage with the brand, and discuss opportunities for the future in different aspects of the industry. We want it to be a hub and a place where we are able to engage with people, not just consumers who buy our clothes and pieces. We want it to be a space where we can have conversations about the fashion industry, sustainable fashion, developmental goals, and breaking poverty within the fashion industry. We want it to be a space where we can meet with and engage different stakeholders and different personalities from finance to architecture to food and entertainment, and Emmy Kasbit is the muse that brings all these people together. The primary source is fashion, but when you take it out to a broader spectrum, you now look at the secondary factors of how it can all collide with the fashion world. That is what we want the space to be, that is what the space is becoming every day, and this is why we decided to open up this space.

MOVIE REVIEW:

Fast X

WATCH OF THE WEEK

SILO

There’s a lot that can be said about Silo, Apple TV+’s latest sci-fi series. It’s based on Wool, a self-published sci-fi book series by Hugh Howey, who also serves as an executive producer. It’s showrun by Graham Yost, best known for the iconic modern Western series Justified. It stars Dune’s Rebecca Ferguson, with an all-star ensemble cast.

The arrival of a new Fast & Furious movie hardly requires any preamble. After 22 years, nine main instalments, one spinoff, and a total metamorphosis of the franchise’s ethos from an initial film about a tight-knit crew of carjacking street racers stealing DVD players to later entries where international government agencies are recruiting the same characters to pull off high-stakes, world-saving espionage missions, the Fast franchise has become a ubiquitous piece of pop culture. It’s easy to write them off as braindead megablockbusters that cost unfathomable amounts of money (this one is one of the most expensive films ever made), but that would be ignoring their authentic sense of gleefully explosive absurdity and highenergy spectacle. Call it Meathead Mission: Impossible, call it whatever you want, but one thing remains more true than ever about these films: You either get it or you don’t. That said, Fast X – a great title addition to a series with a comically inconsistent sense of naming conventions – comes with its own contextual obligations. This is part one of two (or three, if a recent statement by Vin Diesel is to be believed) of a series finale, the culmination of all things both fast and also furious. To that end, it’s hard to ignore how much this indeed feels like a “Part One,” in that so much of it seems like setup for a real pedal-to-the-metal final instalment. It has an inconclusive ending and feels like it’s holding back on its set-pieces, which, in a franchise that’s already finding it hard to top itself (they already literally went to space), equates to something a little deflating.

However, if you’re anything like me and intrinsically enjoy the brazen spectacle, earnest silliness, and shameless incongruity of such a series, it’s likely you’ll walk out of Fast X with the same sense of satisfying fulfilment that I did. No, it’s not Fast Five — it’s not even Fast & Furious 6 or Furious 7 — but taken on its own terms in the post-Paul Walker era

of the franchise, it’s a gratifying piece of video game physics and cartoonish melodrama. It puts seemingly invincible superheroes behind the wheels of muscle cars to do things like stop a giant bomb rolling through the streets of Rome from blowing up the Vatican. That’s all in a day’s work before making it back home for the family barbecue and popping open a Corona. It rocks.

Though the magic of the franchise once stemmed from the collaboration between series-regular director Justin Lin and Vin Diesel, after the former stepped away from this project over creative differences, leaving directing duties to Louis Leterrier, it feels like the true mastermind of the franchise’s direction now is Diesel himself. Lin retains a screenplay credit with Dan Mazeau, but every bit of the ever-expanding roster of the Fast Family lineup and relitigation of previously established events feels like it’s being transmitted directly from Diesel’s fanatically passionate brain, finding new ways to pull from every corner of lore and character work established thus far. Whether that’s a feature or a bug is up to viewer discretion.

The ensemble cast here is too immense to try and list, but you can trust that the main players fill in their requisite parts, as do some returning cast members that have sat out an entry or two. The most notable new addition is Jason Momoa as Dante Reyes, son of Hernan Reyes from Fast Five (we actually get to see the big safe set-piece from that film played out again from his perspective, because, of course). His flamboyant persona, in theory, fits in with the erratic lunacy of these movies but follows a trend that F9: The Fast Saga started off these films finally becoming too self-aware of their own madness. Still, it’s refreshing to see an actor having such fun with a role, and he’s a decent foil for Diesel’s grumbling gravitas.

This film leaves you hanging on what the ultimate showdown between the two will look like, and it’s hard to know how a series built on consistently going bigger and bigger will finally close things out. But for the 10th entry in such an unlikely franchise, it’s hard not to get wrapped up in the typical mannerisms that grant this series its identity. Even when the Fast films are stuck spinning their wheels, they still have their foot firmly on the gas.

Rating: 5.5/10

In the Apple TV+ show, the Silo is an underground sanctuary where the population lives under a strict set of rules. Most notably, for Sheriff Holston (David Oyelowo) and his wife Allison (Rashida Jones), all women are implanted with a birth control device, and couples must apply for permission to have it removed and start a family.

The Holston family’s story takes up the majority of the pilot. Because of the original story’s structure as a series of short stories, episodes feel almost baked into the world of Silo. The pilot is a textbook-great introduction to the world and story, beginning with Holston’s downfall and flashing back to how he lost his wife: she witnessed something she shouldn’t have and started asking questions. She requests to leave the Silo and, in the final moments of the episode, does something that makes Holston reconsider everything he knows to be true.

There’s almost something nostalgic to this show — it’s set in a dystopian world where terms like “The Before

Times” and “The Founders” are used with a straight face. It’s the kind of series that offers a glimpse into a world where there’s more to sci-fi than just the four biggest franchises of the time, where original stories are given their due. However, that’s a con as much as it is a pro. Because of the old-school story, the pacing is also very old-school. The pilot is captivating, but we don’t really see the main characters of that chapter again, so getting reinvested is often difficult. Especially in the streaming age, keeping the stakes high and the intrigue up is a necessity.

Silo is the sci-fi fan’s sci-fi show and will probably find its audience among the more hardcore Dune fans (and not just because of the shared star) but it isn’t destined to become the next Severance or Stranger Things.
