READING SKILLS MULTISENSORY READING INSTRUCTION: PAF Part I This five-session course taught by Phyllis Bertin, co-author of the PAF (Preventing Academic Failure) program, focuses on multisensory techniques for teaching reading, writing and spelling in the primary grades. PAF incorporates the theory and practices of Orton-Gillingham instruction into an early intervention program intended to be used with groups of children at-risk for reading difficulties. PAF can also be used remedially for struggling readers or as an effective beginning reading program for all children. Topics will include instructional practices supported by the latest research on developing accurate and fluent reading and comprehension, lesson planning, and curriculum-based assessments. For teachers of grades K-6 This course is offered for two graduate credits. There are additional hours, assignments, and fees.

SYLLABLES ARE THE KEY: The Basics of Language Structure Through Syllabication All students can benefit from learning strategies for reading and spelling multisyllabic words. Rapid word recognition plays an important role in reading fluency and comprehension. Learning syllable types helps students learn to decode longer words accurately and efficiently. Syllabication is a critical word analysis skill that helps students break unknown multisyllable words into syllables that can be pronounced. This workshop will present techniques for the explicit teaching of syllable types and the rules of syllabication. For teachers of grades 3-12

HANDWRITING: Why It Needs to Be Taught In Every Classroom Recent research has shown that children who are given the opportunity to learn and practice handwriting in early grades show higher academic performance across all academic subjects. Handwriting also lays the foundation for higher order skills needed for written composition. Using visual, auditory and kinesthetic modalities, the instructor will demonstrate strategies for effectively and systematically teaching print and cursive handwriting skills. Recent research on the effectiveness of teaching handwriting will be presented. Differentiating instruction for students with special needs will also be discussed. CURSIVE HANDWRITING: A Vital Component of Multisensory Teaching Research studies have shown that there are proven benefits to the early, effective teaching of handwriting. Therefore, many schools are now requiring that cursive handwriting be formally taught and integrated into the literacy curriculum. Students who are able to use legible handwriting on a spontaneous level are free to concentrate on spelling, high-level thought and written expression. This workshop will demonstrate strategies for teaching cursive handwriting skills, using an effective, systematic program that emphasizes the automatic connection between visual, auditory and kinesthetic modalities. ABCs of Testing: Using Reading Test Results to Plan Instruction In recent years, considerable attention has focused on the merits of testing and test scores. To plan effective reading instruction, teachers must be able to interpret reading results that pinpoint each student’s strengths and weaknesses. In this workshop, Ronnie Berish, MS, Coordinator of Special Services at The Windward School, will identify the skills needed for effective reading. Participants will be shown specific tests that focus on each of those skills, and how and why the reading tests are selected, administered, and interpreted. Participants will actively engage in interpreting the results of selected tests, and discuss the ways in which the information will be used. For teachers of grades 1-8

ADHD: School Success with Less Stress ADHD is far more than a disorder of attention; it affects a cognitive skill set called executive function. Executive function is a foundation for learning, impacting students’ ability to organize, plan, collaborate, read, write, and more. At home and school, a comprehensive plan acknowledging ADHD’s broad impact is required to address these far-reaching developmental effects. Appropriate for parents and teachers, this workshop will emphasize a four-part, practical plan that sets up children with ADHD for a more successful, less stressful school experience.

Grit and Resilience The characteristics of grit and resilience are universal human traits, and in recent years they have received much attention in the popular and scientific communities. Jon Rosenshine, The Windward School’s Associate Head of School, and Danielle Scorrano, Research Associate and Middle School teacher, will demonstrate how certain character strengths support grit and resilience in different areas of life. They will provide strategies for parents and educators to foster grit, resilience, and flourishing in students academically and personally. The presenters will also discuss some of the controversies currently surrounding these important topics. Participants should leave this workshop with research-based, practical strategies for increasing grit and resilience in all areas of a child’s life. L O C AT I O N PRESENTERS

MINDFULNESS: A Practical, Evidence-Based Toolbox for Daily Life One of the most proven means to managing stress is the practice of mindfulness, which promotes resilience and well-being not only for oneself but those around us. Mindfulness hones our awareness and capacity to handle challenges, actively building traits that sustain our resilience and impact our lives. Supporting wisdom is the larger intention – combining intellectual abilities (knowing how our mind works and seeing life as it is) and intuition (letting go of everything that gets in the way of acceptance, responsiveness, and compassion). Mindfulness is a research-supported and accessible means to living the skillful life you choose with more ease. L O C AT I O N PRESENTER D AT E TIME CODE FEE
