Our Mission

Windward is a coeducational, independent day school dedicated to providing a proven instructional program for children with language-based learning disabilities. The multisensory curriculum is designed for students of average to superior intelligence who can benefit from the unique educational experience provided. Through direct instruction in small class settings, a trained staff assists students to improve their language skills. Academic success, combined with opportunities for social and emotional growth within an intentionally diverse and inclusive setting, enables students to understand their learning differences, build confidence, and develop self-advocacy skills. Windward is committed to helping students achieve their full potential in preparation for a successful return to a mainstream educational environment. To meet these goals, the School provides ongoing training to its faculty based on the most current research and shares its expertise with the parent body, other educators, and the broader community.

Community - Windward believes in building a diverse and inclusive community that puts our students at the center of all we do, and where everyone feels valued and a sense of belonging.

A Letter from the Head of School and Board Chair

At Windward, we accomplished some incredible things in 2021-2022, grounded in an unyielding commitment to our transformative program and a community unified in its dedication to one another. There has been a palpable sense of hope as we have gradually resumed connecting with each other in person.

Resilience is the hallmark of our community. This quality has never been more evident than in how we have navigated unique challenges, together, for the past few years. By necessity, we have faced some incredibly difficult realities: a global pandemic with far-reaching effects, both for our community and the educational landscape as a whole; the ongoing war in Ukraine; the spotlight on significant inequities in our society and in our educational system that has revealed how many children are being left behind.

During these challenging times, we have held fast to the belief that we will absolutely prevail. We have shown up for each other, for our students, for our teachers and staff. We have a great deal of gratitude for our community, for its willingness to hold its members close throughout difficult times and for its willingness to step into joyful moments worth celebrating, such as the return of a joint eighth-grade graduation ceremony for the first time in three years. We gathered in October for the Windward Classic, which raised more than $160,000 in support of the Windward Teacher Training Program, the foundation for a program that is unmatched in remediating students’ language-based learning disabilities. This community also stepped up in a massive way at our biennial Spring Benefit in April. Together, we raised over $800,000 for our teachers and for our tuition assistance program, which helps make a Windward education accessible to those who need it.

Thanks to your generosity, we are able to continue both supporting our incredible faculty and ensuring access to our exceptional program. Honoring this balance—between facing the work that must be done and embracing possibility—is at the heart of what we do. It is the reason we feel such a sense of urgency in this work, and it is what gives our work meaning. Thank you, our Windward community, for your tenacity, for your strength, and for your commitment, above all else, to our wonderful students.

“Dyslexia is a different way of viewing the world, a different way of approaching problems and envisioning the future. Let this learning serve as your north star, and even during its dimmest days, no fog is too dense. You are the contractors of our future.”

The Dream Big: Your Dreams Are Your Future program was founded in 2011 as a means of instilling in students, through visits by prominent speakers, the belief that having a learning disability need not hold them back from a lifetime of achievement. It transitioned to feature Windward Alumni speakers in 2020.

This year's Dream Big, sponsored by the Windward Parents Association, brought together the Manhattan and Westchester 8th and 9th grade students to meet Reed Switzer '19; entrepreneur, rising product leader and Founder and 21 year-old CEO of venture-backed FinTech startup, Hopscotch. The innovative company enables small businesses and solopreneurs to pay and get paid in real-time without any fees.

Homecoming

Last year's Windward Alumni Homecoming was an amazing day hosted at our Westchester campus, with more than 200 attendees! The former students and families cheered on our current soccer teams from the sidelines during our third annual Westchester vs. Manhattan game, and everyone enjoyed the pizza, burger, and ice cream trucks.

The first-ever Alumni vs. Faculty/Staff kickball game was also a hit! Alumni Ambassadors Melissa Strauss '15 and Grace Desiderio '19 coordinated our Alumni team and took to the mic to give us a play-by-play of the action. It was a well fought game by both sides, but ultimately the Faculty/Staff pulled it off with a one-point, 8-7 victory.

The Windward School Benefit is a biennial celebration that honors leaders in the field of dyslexia, showcases Windward alumni success stories, and promotes Windward’s expertise as the leader in language-based learning disabilities education. To Provide Professional Development

The Windward Institute provides robust, comprehensive, collaborative, and sustained professional development for educators, practitioners, and families. Courses, workshops, and lectures address a wide range of subject areas. The WI offers over 35 professional development opportunities a year, including free lectures and webinars that expand its impact in the local and global educational community. Over 11,000 hours of teacher training is conducted annually, with more than 1,900 educators participating.

To Expand The Windward School’s Reputation And Expertise

The Windward School’s reputation, expertise, and success are expanded through thought leadership via lectures, webinars, journal articles, READ (Research Education ADvocacy) podcast, E-Newsletter, free virtual events, and through partnerships with organizations such as Promise Project and Winsome Wishes for Kids. The expertise of The Windward School faculty members is elevated by leading WI professional development courses, workshops, and lectures.

To Form Partnerships With Leading Educational Institutions

Through collaborative partnerships with leading educational research institutions, The Windward Institute advances the field of literacy and translation of scientific research into evidencebased instruction and intervention methodologies. These partnerships serve to bridge the research to education gap by informing teaching practices for all students, especially struggling readers and those with language-based learning disabilities. Partnership with the Haskins Global Literacy Hub, and affiliations with Yale and UCONN, has enabled The Windward Institute to establish cognitive neuroscience laboratories for the Windward/ Haskins in-school research study, Predicting Literacy Outcomes at The Windward School (P.L.O.W.), with over 30 student volunteers since the start of data collection in the fall of 2019.

To Advocate For Students With Language-Based Learning Disabilities

The Windward Institute drives advancements in research, advocacy, policy, and pedagogy by prioritizing connections with policy makers, experts, and institutions that share in the vision of creating equity in education for all children by disrupting the status quo.

• providing access to educational resources to the public through free reading screenings;

• creating a partnership with Promise Project through which current Windward-trained teachers tutor students in underserved communities;

• dispelling myths and bringing free expert resources through the READ podcast;

• reducing the negative stigma associated with dyslexia through awareness campaigns;

• advocating for policy changes at the local and state level that will fully support students with language-based learning disabilities.

Expanded Impact

P.L.O.W.

The Windward/Haskins Collaborative Project, Predicting Literacy Outcomes at The Windward School (P.L.O.W.), has engaged 30 volunteer students to actively contribute to educational neuroscience research by completing reading and related skill-based activities through behavioral assessments and electroencephalography (EEG) neuroimaging. One of the goals of P.L.O.W. is for researchers to work with the Windward community to gain a better understanding of which instructional strategies work best for which students. Windward’s participation in this groundbreaking study has the potential to improve language and literacy outcomes for all children at risk for reading difficulties.

Promise Clinic Tutoring

In Spring 2021, The Windward School partnered with the Promise Clinic to provide tutoring at no cost to identified students who exhibit difficulty with reading and writing and reside in underserved communities. Participating students were identified using existing neuropsychological reports and paired with Windward teachers trained to implement the PAF Reading Program, a research-based Orton-Gillingham program.

• 5 Windward faculty members serve as Spanish-English translators to facilitate bidirectional communication between tutors and Spanish-speaking families.

• Additional resources provided by Windward include school supplies, Chromebooks, and WiFi hot spots.

• Students showed growth in foundational literacy skills based on results of assessments conducted periodically.

Free Reading Screenings

In April 2021, Windward launched a pilot program to conduct free, virtual reading screenings for potentially at-risk kindergarten students and rising first graders. Additional cycles in December 2021, February 2022, and March 2022 targeted current first graders, with plans to offer multiple cycles per year to meet the high demand for the program.

IMPACT AT A GLANCE

More than 70 students have been screened in the first four clinics, with 55% identified as needing additional supports.

Windward offers families resources that include:

• a family guide accompanying the Predictive Assessment for Reading, which provides an explanation of the student’s performance and predicts future reading skills; and

• suggestions for remediation and recommendations for strategies families can use at home as well as potential next steps.

Windward Parents Association

The Windward Parents Association (WPA) had a tremendously successful 2021-2022 school year. They remained committed to their mission of building community and brought back the first community events in almost two years! Families enjoyed fostering their children’s love of reading at the book fair. Community service projects helped Windward give back to Adopt-a-Dog, the ASPC, Arthur B. Brown and William Brown/ Yorkville Gardens, Leveling the Playing Field, Midnight Run, Neighbor to Neighbor, and the New York Common Pantry. Popcorn, cotton candy, and more were enjoyed by all at the first ever Manhattan Spring Fair and Westchester Movie Nights. Faculty and Staff felt their gratitude through food trucks, special treats, and more. From all accounts, the WPA made the 20212022 school year a special one!
