NEW PROGRAM EXPANDS DANCE’S APPEAL The MAC Crew, created last year, focuses on breakdance, hip hop and tap styles. There are some new faces in MAC’s Dance program, and they include athletes who might not have been willing to dive into the program a few years ago. MAC Dance introduced the Crew last year, and it’s been met with enthusiasm. The Crew encompasses breakdance, hip hop, and tap styles, and participants perform locally and represent MAC at select competitions. Dancers are accepted by audition only (see above). Dancers must commit to regular rehearsals for the school year. The Crew season runs from September through June. “It’s still competitive, it’s just less of a commitment,” says Dance Manager and Coach Laura Haney. “They’re not required to take ballet. It’s more accessible to more members.” Like MAC’s other dance companies, the MAC Crew performs at the annual Street Fair and the Dance program’s marquee event, the MAC Dance Recital at the Newmark Theater.

Dance Recital The MAC Annual Dance recital is at 4 p.m. Sunday, June 11, at the Newmark Theatre, and is free to members and guests. Performers include the competitive Company, Junior Company, and Crew dancers, as well as the MAC recreational dance classes. The Annual Recital, held in a professional venue with the highest quality sound, lighting, and staging, is the culmination of the MAC dance year. The Mini-Recital, for MAC’s youngest dancers, is held in The Ballroom at MAC on Sunday, March 19 at noon. Preparation begins in January for both recitals. MAC Dance has something to offer members of all ages and levels, from toddler on up. Read more about the classes offered this session on pages 10 and 11 of the guide. For more information, contact the Dance Office at 503-517-7522.

HOLIDAY SKI CAMP (ages 5 and older) Holiday Ski Camp setting is ideal for skiers of all ability levels looking to improve their skills and get a taste of ski racing. Skiers who are new to ski racing are divided into groups of their peers with similar ability levels to work on broad-based skill development through directed free skiing and drill progressions. If conditions allow, the older experienced athletes work on advanced progressions and running race courses, which give the new campers a chance to rub shoulders with some of the best athletes in the Pacific Northwest. Holiday Ski Camp is used as the evaluation period for new skiers hoping to continue with the MAC Alpine Ski Team in one of its full winter programs. Camp concludes with a SkillsQuest* Assessment and skiers’ scores, along with their coach’s evaluation, determine if they are ready to join the team. To be admitted into Holiday Ski Camp, skiers must be able put on their own equipment, stand up and ski on their own, make parallel turns some of the time, and ski down groomed, easy-to-intermediate terrain. Skiers who cannot load the chair by themselves must have a parent ski with the group to assist them. Camp cost does not include lift ticket or pass. Holiday Ski Camp is included in the cost of all winter ski programs. Skiers who make the team after evaluation are only charged the remaining balance of their winter program, less the cost of Holiday Ski Camp. This camp is for MAC members only. For more information, contact Justin Rackley at JRackley@themac.com. 12/27-12/30 T-F Mt. Hood Meadows $260 OSK011 *SkillsQuest is a USSA program designed to test and challenge athletes’ ability in the skill groups of Edging, Pressure, Rotary, and Balance, and is scaled to their phase of development according to the Alpine Training System. Information on USSA’s SkillsQuest program and Alpine Training System can be found at www.ussa.org.

TENNIS

MAC Tennis offers classes and lessons for all ages. Members improve their stroke, develop new point strategies and get a great workout. Children are introduced to the game and given an opportunity to develop enthusiasm and basic skills. Unless otherwise noted, no drop-ins are allowed. Missed classes are not refundable. Participation in previous sessions does not secure placement in a current session. MAC Tennis professionals reserve the right to place participants in the proper class. For a complete list of levels, course descriptions and program policies, visit http://themac.com/group/pages/tennis. For more information contact Robin Franklin, 503-517-7561 or RFranklin@themac.com.

JUNIOR CLASSES The MAC Junior Tennis Program offers classes and lessons for recreational and competitive juniors. Ages are listed with classes below. Class size is limited. Players learn stroke mechanics, efficient and effective movement, as well as strategies and tactics to assist in becoming an all-round tennis player. Good sportsmanship and a love for the game is stressed. MAC Tennis coaches reserve the right to place participants in the proper class. Unless otherwise noted, no drop-ins are allowed. MAC Junior Tennis is transitioning to QuickStart Tennis, utilizing low compression tennis balls and shorter courts and equipment to make learning tennis easier and more enjoyable for children. Lower bouncing balls and scaled down courts allow children to learn the proper court movements and start thinking tactically from a young age. Once players advance to the standard 78-ft. court, they will have the opportunity to choose a competitive or recreational pathway. *Due to the Annual Meeting, classes on 2/7 will be held on Courts 5-7.

TENNIS RED BALL I (ages 4 to 6) (formerly TINY TOTS 1) Players are introduced to the proper grip, preparation and swing shape for all strokes. A variety of games and activities are used to develop hand-eye coordination and movement. Players acquire necessary skills for consistency and directional control as they learn to rally. The 36-ft. court is used for this class. Class instructors include Head Coach Paul Reber and Coaches Craig Koessler and Quintin Yray. Class size is limited to 16. 1/2-1/30 2/6-3/13

TASTE YOUR WAY AROUND THE GLOBE Portland author and beer expert Jeff Alworth teaches a class on world beer this winter.

E

ven in a city brimming with beer geeks, there is perhaps no better authority than Jeff Alworth. His Beervana blog is the mostrespected source for beer news in Oregon, and he authored The Beer Bible, an entertaining an extensive overview of the brewing world published in 2015. Other book credits include Cider Made Simple, The Beer Tasting Toolkit and the upcoming The Secrets of Master Brewers. Alworth brings his encyclopedic, or should we say, Biblical knowledge of the beer world to MAC during the winter class session. His one-night class, Understanding National Tradition in Beer, looks at brews through the lenses of the countries in which they’re crafted. Students taste beers from England, Germany, the Czech Republic, Belgium and the U.S., and “discover the fingerprints of national tradition in the way they are made.” Alworth says he developed the class after he traveled to the world’s great brewing region’s while researching The Beer Bible. “What I learned was countries, and in some cases regions, think about beer and brew beer differently from one place to the next. They do weird quirky things that nobody else does,” Alworth says. “Whether you talk about English cask ales or Belgian-style beers, there are certain things about those beers unique to the way they’re made.” And that extends to American styles. While the U.S. spent a century or two importing brewing techniques and beer styles, they’ve spent the past three decades developing an industry that is copied the world over.

Author and Beervana blogger Jeff Alworth. “Americans are brewing beer in a way no one on the planet has ever brewed, and it’s been hugely influential,” Alworth says. The class is appropriate for just about any beer enthusiast, so long as you are at least “slightly interested in beer,” Alworth says. With a vast knowledge of style and history, the author can work a room to appease the novice and the seasoned geek. Taste and learn about the beers of the world and the region at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26 at MAC. Register online at www.theMAC.com or call 503-517-7235.
