Restless Leg Syndrome and Chronic Venous Disease

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a disorder that involves abnormal sensation and movement in the legs. People with RLS experience an unpleasant feeling or sensation in their legs when they lie down or when they are sitting still for an extended period of time. Most commonly this occurs when they are getting ready to go to sleep or when they are relaxing after a long day. Most people will feel a strong urge to move, and while moving sometimes makes the symptoms lessen, the need to constantly reposition and move makes rest and sleep challenging. Most people with RLS complain of not getting enough restful sleep. When you sleep poorly, your daily tasks become more difficult and work productivity is noticeably less efficient. Often times a clear cause for restless legs is not evident which is why it is important to see a doctor and get an accurate diagnosis and then help to manage your symptoms. While some people who seek treatment do not have any underlying problem, many patients who have varicose veins and RLS often describe improvement or resolution of RLS symptoms following treatment of their varicose veins. The main symptom of RLS is an irresistible urge to move because of uncomfortable and sometimes painful sensations deep within a part of your body. In the case of venous insufficiency, blood that has already delivered oxygen to the tissues of the legs is inefficiently removed from the legs and causes the muscles and nerves in the leg to begin to react to this. The body makes an effort to move the legs and make the muscles help pump blood back to the heart and lungs where it is meant to be. When the blood is pumped out of the legs the symptoms get better. Most patients will describe RLS symptoms that are worse after a physically active day.

I HAD NO IDEA I DIDN’T HAVE TO LIVE W

At first, symptoms may be mild and occur intermittently. However, symptoms often get worse with age. People over 50 often describe their symptoms related to this condition as occurring daily and can become a problem and cause a decline in quality of life. If you experience these symptoms, you need to be seen by a medical professional and have a comprehensive history and physical examination. If you have symptoms of restless legs, visible varicose veins, swollen legs or discolored skin on your lower legs, you should be evaluated for underlying chronic venous insufficiency. The professionals at Circulatory Centers are well equipped to evaluate you and determine if an underlying treatable cause for your symptoms exists.

It’s All About Making You Look Amazing Many times we are asked how we would describe our store. And though it is a relatively simple question- the answer is complicated. How do you describe a store that is ever changing? In an industry filled with dated traditions, stereotypes, uninspiring options we have a tremendous passion to change all that. Our store is situated in a position where in order to flourish and thrive we have to listen to what our customers are asking for, what they are looking for. Whether it be boho chic, modern elegance, traditional, contemporary, and vintagewe have something for everyone.

But besides the inventory and more importantly, our focus is on style. Season after season we watch new trends and designs grace the runways. As artistic, fashion forward as these gowns might be, they do not work for everyone. Just because something is trending on the runways- does not mean it is stylish. In our store, it’s not about the brand, the trend. It’s all about the style. It’s all about what looks amazing on your body and what looks the most natural on you. Our focus is entirely on creating a relaxed, super sweet and fun experience…..while making you feel comfortable, loved and beautiful.

We’ve been told many times that what you wear underneath your clothes is just as (if not more) important than the clothes themselves. Wearing the wrong undergarments can ruin your outfit and make you extremely uncomfortable. Still, many women continue to make bra mistakes every day. As we enter into Spring and Summer, make sure one of the items on your to do list is a free complimentary bra fitting at Jezebel’s Boutique in State College. But for now, let’s take a look at some of the more common problems and solutions. During exercise, breasts do bounce, sometimes a lot. In order to contain the “girls”, women resort to wearing multiple bras. Layered sports bras don’t give constructive support and they can be uncomfortable. Not to mention all that compression often leads to the dreaded uni-boob. With today’s sports bra collections, there is no reason to double up your bra for support when exercising, even with a larger bust. Highimpact sports bras use a unique design to support the breasts (and minimize bouncing) with encapsulation. This allows the bust to look great even at the gym, keeping you from bouncing up and down and side to May June 2016

Recent Adoption Decision The United States Supreme Court on March 7, 2016 upheld a woman’s adoption of three children born to her same sex partner. The opinion, which addresses jurisdiction and full faith and credit issues, provides comfort to adoptive parents that their parental rights should not be diminished. Two women, E.L. and V.L., were involved in a 16 year relationship from 1995-2011. They lived in Alabama. Using assisted reproductive technology, E.L. gave birth to a child in 2002 and twins in 2004. The two women raised the children together from birth. During the relationship, they rented a house in Georgia and used the more favorable Georgia adoption laws to have V.L. legally adopt the children while E.L. (the biological mom) retained her rights as well. This is often referred to as “second parent adoption.” The adoption was completed in Georgia. The parties never married or had a civil union. They later separated, while living in Alabama. V.L. (the adoptive mom) moved out of the house and subsequently filed a petition alleging that E.L. had denied her access to the children and interfered with her parental rights. V.L. asked the Alabama court to recognize the Georgia adoption so that she could continue to jointly raise her children, as she had been doing prior to the separation. E.L. (the biological mom) argued that the Georgia adoption should not be recognized in Alabama and therefore V.L. had no parental rights. The U.S. Supreme Court held that Alabama had to recognize the adoption completed in Georgia. This meant that V.L. retained her legal adoptive status as May June 2016

a parent of the three children and could pursue her rights to joint custody and parenting time. While the ruling focused on a jurisdiction analysis, the import of the ruling is that legal adoption is to be honored, from state to state, whether in a same sex couple situation or otherwise. This significant ruling confirms that families united by adoption (and love) make a family, not necessarily blood.

What are Bonds?

of your bond holding (small trades tend to make out worse), there may or may not be a buyer for your bond. Investors also turn to mutual funds for bonds/fixed income. Bonds are held inside mutual funds in many retirement plans so chances are you may own a bond or 100 bonds. A mutual fund will pool investors’ money and buy many different bonds. This helps investors in two ways: a bond fund is more liquid than an individual bond and it diversifies a small bondholder’s fixed income holdings ($1,000 spread over 100 bonds in a mutual fund versus putting $1,000 into one bond from one issuer). The downside is that the mutual fund will fluctuate and has no set maturity when you are assured the return of your principal. The WJfrom May/June income bond 2016 mutual funds will also vary and they do not have a Prepared by Janet Chambers, fixed coupon. By Judy L. Loy, ChFC®, Retirement Income Certified Professional® and CEO of Nestlerode & Loy, Inc., an investment firm located in Centre County and serving the world. In the last Women’s Journal issue, I concentrated on stocks or equities. In this column, I want to provide a better understanding of another type of security: bonds. A bond is a debt security. A bondholder is lending money to the bond issuer and in return the issuer promises to pay a specified rate of interest. There are many different types of bond issuers. The issuer of a bond is important; it can affect the interest rate paid, the credit quality of the bond and the taxability of the interest. Let me review a few of the issuers of bonds. Corporate bonds are issued by corporations, who want to pay for expansion, equipment or operating expenses. Municipal bonds are issued by state and local governments and their entities (hospitals, schools, etc.) to supplement tax revenues and finance projects. Municipals (often called munis) are attractive to investors with high tax brackets due to the tax benefit of the coupon. U.S. Treasury securities, backed by the U.S. government, are considered the safest of bonds and typically have a low interest rate due to their low risk. International Bonds are issued by foreign governments and corporations. They can be sold in their own country or internationally. Bonds are issued with a maturity, which is the time between the date of issue and the date when the principal is due to be repaid in full. Bonds can also be callable, meaning the issuer can redeem the bonds at face value earlier than the maturity date. The maturity date will affect its coupon (typically the longer the maturity the higher the rate but exceptions do arise), and the fluctuations the owner will experience in price. Bonds are called “fixed income” securities due to the fact that most bonds pay a fixed coupon. A bond is typically issued in lots of $1,000 with a fixed interest rate (there are exceptions but I will just illustrate a typical bond). The fixed interest rate on the bond is also called the coupon. For example, a bond is issued with a face amount of $1,000 with a 2% coupon and a maturity date of 4/15/2023. If you buy this bond, it means the issuer promises to pay you $20 per year until April 2023 when the issue will return your $1,000. This works well as long as the issuer remains solvent. After issuance, bonds can be sold on the open market. However, bonds are not as liquid as stocks. This means if you try to sell your bond before maturity, you may get more or less than the face value. For instance, if interest rates have gone down since you purchased your bond, your bond may be worth more. Depending on maturity and size May June 2016

Essential Oils- Something that does kill the Flu? Rediscover Health, Lose Weight, Gain Energy & Learn about the new ground breaking health study

drop of wintergreen has the potency of 20 aspirin without the side effects. Because 96% of TMJ sufferers (yes that includes migraines), are the result of over active muscle activity, Deep Blue can eliminate the inflammation in the muscle, alleviating the TMD/migraine pain. Although it will smell like Icy Hot, the oils in Deep Blue actually penetrate the muscle tissue and work to help eliminate inflammation at the cellular level rather than just cooling the muscle as Icy Hot does. Again, these oils are being absorbed by our bodies because they are natural and are working to heal at the cellular level, not just mask discomfort.

Essential oils has revolutionized how we look at the treatment of patients. Dentally, essential oils have provided us with all natural alternatives to promote the health of gum disease, infections, and even headaches. Many times dental problems, although manageable, become a chronic, ongoing, incurable condition because too often the source of the infection or the cause of the migraine could not be determined, and therefore, could not be alleviated. With essential oil therapies, because of their purity and ability to be ingested, we have become able to aid in the resolution of the root cause of these dental problems. NOW, however, it’s gone a step further. On Guard is a potent blend of essential oils which are anti-bacterial and anti-viral. On Guard has always been in an essential oil company that we work with cleaning products and yet our patients can rinse with On Guard instead of many over the counter products to eliminate the bacteria associated with gum disease and recurrent infection post-surgery. We have always cleaned out every tooth with it prior to the filling. The tissue and healing response has been so profound and rapid, patients choose this course of treatment many times more than traditional prescription meds even though the oils are not “covered” by insurance. NOW, however, On Guard has been shown to eradicate the flu virus 90% in an invitro study of canine kidney cells. This will begin to change the complexion of the pharmaceutical world.

We enjoy helping you to eliminate gum disease and migraines, but nothing is as fun as helping you LOSING WEIGHT. We offer free nutritional counseling that along with an essential oil called Slim & Sassy’s product line can help increase a patent’s metabolism. The 90 day weight loss challenge has patients lose inches and dress sizes in weeks. Learning about essential oils can be overwhelming; it is basically learning a whole new language or way of life. At Carnicella & Associates, our friendly knowledgeable team are dedicated to making every visit to our office a great experience, including wellness nights to learn about essential oils. Our dental care and wellness nights are provided with a warm personal touch in a comfortable relaxed setting. We strive to treat the whole body to ensure a healthy mouth! Call 814-355-5254 to schedule your appointment or learn more about our wellness night today!

We also frequently use Deep Blue. Another blend of oils, mainly wintergreen, that helps to eliminate inflammation in muscle tissue. One

Q&A: Get Comfortable with Potty Talk Q:

Dr. Heather Gerst

From the time we are young ladies, we are taught to keep our burping, flatulence and tales about toileting to ourselves. As a result, many women are reluctant to share digestive health changes with their doctors. Don’t let silence and “refinement” leave you suffering with unnecessary discomfort, embarrassment or worse, prevent a serious condition from being diagnosed. At Susquehanna Health’s Digestive Disease Center, Dr. Heather Gerst gets the potty talk started with answers to common questions.

Q:

What makes up the digestive system?

Your gastrointestinal (GI) tract begins at your mouth and continues to your esophagus, stomach and small and large intestines which are all involved in processing and converting food into nutrients for energy, growth and cell repair. The large intestine includes the colon, rectum and anus which help to remove waste from the body. Other organs that help with digestion are the liver, gallbladder and pancreas.

Are digestive diseases common?

Q:

Are there effective treatments for digestive disorders?

Digestive disorders are more common than the common cold! Each year Americans spend $500 on laxatives and fiber supplements alone, and just about everyone with a GI disorder says it decreases their quality of life. About 70 million Americans are affected by digestive diseases, and colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death of men and women.

There is no reason to suffer quietly with discomfort or embarrassment from a digestive disorder. Treatments range from dietary changes to medications, exercise and surgical procedures. Begin by sharing your symptoms with your healthcare provider!

Do women have more digestive issues than men?

Give your GI tract a good head start by chewing your food many times before swallowing and eating smaller meals more often. Aim to drink eight glasses of water each day and make sure you’re getting at least 25 grams of fiber through fruits, legumes, nuts and seeds. Walking and other physical activity aids digestion and tones internal muscles, too. Fat slows digestion and can increase your weight, so limit it to no more than 30 percent of your calories. A thicker mid-section may also lead to more burping and heartburn! Try including probiotics (such as those added to yogurt) in your diet to aid digestion and battle bad bacteria. If you smoke, stop. Reducing stress can also help with digestion.

Q:

Unfortunately, yes! Much of this is because of our anatomy—the reproductive organs take up more internal space. Women are more prone to having abdominal surgeries that shift their anatomy, such as cesarean sections or hysterectomies. Hormones also play a role. Many women note constipation and/or diarrhea that coincides with their menstrual cycle and everything from constipation to heartburn and nausea with pregnancy. Women are also more sensitive to pressure and taste. Our stomachs and gallbladder empty more slowly, and as we know all too well, women are more likely to bloat.

Q:

Which digestive problems are more common in women than men?

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), gallstones, autoimmune disorders such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, celiac disease, autoimmune hepatitis or primary biliary cirrhosis and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) are reported more commonly by women. Other common GI disorders include chronic constipation, fecal incontinence, hemorrhoids, diverticulitis and peptic ulcers.

Q:

Q:

How can I take better care of my GI tract?

Are there screening tests for digestive disorders?

Always listen to your gut—any sudden change in your digestive health from excess burping, flatulence, diarrhea, fecal incontinence, constipation and blood in the stool or changes to its shape or color should be reported to your doctor. And don’t skip that important first colonoscopy. Most women should have it at age 50, but your doctor may recommend that you have one sooner based on family history.

At Susquehanna Health’s Digestive Disease Center, our specialists provide advanced care for the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of gastrointestinal and liver diseases and conditions, including irritable bowel syndrome. Charlie’s Coffeehouse handed out free hot chocolate, SAC handed out free It’s On Us t-shirts, and Transitions of PA provided information about their services and supporting survivors. Before the men’s game President Lemons spoke to the crowded gym about the White House and creation of the It’s on Us Campaign, encouraging everyone to Support A SAFER Susquehanna. At the halftime of the women’s game, Alex Federico Assistant Director of Leadership and Engagement and SAFER co-founder and committee chair, spoke about It’s On Us at Susquehanna and called everyone who had taken the pledge down to the court for a group photo. Later in the semester SAFER held their inaugural spring semester SAFER week, which included events, workshops, and speakers about Title IX education and healthy relationships.

Susquehanna University is dedicated to fostering a campus community of mutual respect. The SAFER (Susquehanna Advocates For Educated Responsibility) Initiative was created to regularly develop knowledge and skills among community members in an effort to actively confront acts of bias, discrimination, and harassment of any kind, including sexual misconduct. SAFER started the 2015-2016 academic year by partnering with Fraternity and Sorority Life and Athletics to create an It’s On Us campaign featuring Susquehanna students. The campaign kicked off in September at the homecoming football game. Members of SAFER handed out buttons through the first half of the game in preparation for the debut of the student made It’s On Us PSA. The video features SU students encouraging their peers to be part of the solution and to step-up and say something by taking the pledge at www. itsonus.org. This debut was followed by a poster installation in the Degenstein Campus Center featuring the students in the video. Alongside the posters were large signing sheets where community members could sign the It’s On Us Pledge and take a pin to show their support for a SAFER Susquehanna.

Over this academic year over 800 Susquehanna Community members have signed the It’s On Us pledge and dedicated themselves to creating a SAFER Susquehanna. SAFER plans to continue their effort this fall with addition of a fall SAFER Week and addition of #TheRedZone campaign.

Lorie Litzinger

Getting-Ready… can be hectic, no matter if it’s to the store, to the doctor, to work, to dinner or out to somewhere else, we often feel hurried. If part of your morning routine is applying daily eyebrow pencil or eyeliner, those days can be been long gone. With the increasing popularity of permanent cosmetics many people have already shortened their morning routine. Why not consider permanent eyebrows or eyeliner or even lip color? These procedures have been done for decades. It’s not just in Hollywood anymore. As a matter of fact Lorie Litzinger of Bellefonte has been simplifying the lives of many women throughout PA and surrounding states by applying permanent cosmetics for over for 14 years. She’s done thousands of procedures on clients’ ranging in age from 18-94. If you are someone who cares about your appearance, no matter how busy you are, how tired you are , or how old you are, permanent makeup is time saving and convenient. And, for the times we just don’t want to bother with it..no worries…it’s already there. As we age and the ability to apply makeup nicely is being compromised, wouldn’t it be nice to know there is a solution for looking your best….effortlessly. Eyebrows are all the rage right now. Great eyebrows frame your eyes and give your entire face a more polished look. Lorie Litzinger works closely with each brow client to strategically place hair-like strokes of pigment to simulate brow hairs and will cluster them together to form a pretty and natural looking eyebrow. Even a small brow improvement can restore the confidence in your appearance. Check out the photos on this page and see the benefits of permanent eyebrow reshaping and restoring on a few her clients. Call Lorie Litzinger for a free consultation and see how she can improve your brows. “As things can become hectic at times...your brows can be one thing that doesn’t. Come in for a complementary brow consultation. I’ll be happy to show you what I can do with your brows.Check out my website www.secretsbylorie.com to see combo packaging for brows, eyeliner and lip color. Pamper yourself this year and let 2016 be the year you shorten your morning routine.” ~Lorie Litzinger, Secrets by Lorie

Why Mental Health Matters…. a professional who will put you on the path to feeling better inside and out!

By Ann Wayne, RN, CEO, The Meadows Psychiatric Center/UCBH offering inpatient, outpatient and crisis mental health services

Live each day well because YOUR MENTAL HEALTH DOES MATTER!

In May, we celebrate Mental Health Awareness month. As many months have designated awareness causes, nothing can be more important that your mental health. Many people take their physical health seriously scheduling annual physicals, cancer screening, and routine blood work and most people believe that unless you are seriously mentally ill, you really don’t need to take preventative steps for your mental health. But the truth is that your emotions and thoughts play into your overall health. Good mental health prepares you for everyday life challenges and strengthens your resiliency and coping for life’s bigger crises.

One of only 1,224 hospitals in the United States to achieve the

As you think about why your mental health matters, think about these things that may support you in feeling confident and strong: Stay positive, Get walking or exercise, Eat healthy, Get your rest every day, Help others, Create friendships and connect with other people, Take care of your spirit and manage stress or anxiety. Research shows that how good you feel is in a large part up to you. You can take reasonable but consistent steps to manage your own well-being, your hope in feeling better and your recovery. Your mental health is one of your greatest assets. It helps you focus at work, fight off illness, overcome challenges and improve relationships. Williamsport Hearing Services The Hearing Experts

Most people with tinnitus have hearing loss and one of the most effective ways to reduce tinnitus for someone with hearing loss is with the use of hearing aids. The American Tinnitus Association found that about 60% of people who wear hearing aids reported significantly less tinnitus while using the hearing aids. If you suffer from tinnitus, contact your local audiologist and schedule a hearing test and see if you are a candidate for hearing aids.

To Color OR Not To Color… Attention Ladies! Gray hair does not make you look old! There are many things that can make you look old. Your age is probably the primary culprit. Then there’s diet, rest, exercise… you’ve heard it all before. But it seems gray hair always gets the blame. The truth is, as your hair color is changing, so is the color of your skin, eyes, and teeth. (In an effort to stay out of trouble I’ll use myself as an example.) Before my hair began to turn gray I stayed away from gray clothing. With my skin tone, gray clothes made me look physically sick. But now that I’m mostly gray I can ROCK a gray suit. I even have gray frames for my glasses. Please don’t misunderstand me. Many of my color clients come to me expressly to have their gray covered. Further, I love coloring gray because gray coverage offers its own set of challenges for a colorist. If you do choose to color your gray, here are a few quick rules to help put things in perspective: 1. Highlighting gray hair does not camouflage the gray. 2. If you want to go lighter, don’t go more than 2 levels lighter than your present natural color. Lighter hair accentuates facial lines. 3. Use translucent colors for a more natural look. 4. If you look in the mirror and see a face and hair, your color is probably wrong for you. If your color is right, you should just see your beautiful head and face as a blended picture. Finally, remember that hair is only part of the total package. Whether your hair is changed by nature or by choice, your clothing, accessories, eyeglasses and makeup (if worn) must coordinate to complete the picture. To color or not to color… that is the question! Isn’t it nice to know that you can look great either way?! Call That Special Touch today for an appointment 814-234-3770.

Real Estate Report 2016

Real estate in central PA in 2016 is different than what we have seen in the past few years. In the first quarter of this year we have clear evidence of this. Residential listings throughout Centre County have been lower than usual while the number of residential sales for 2016 are up. Those factors indicate that we are in a Seller’s market. These conditions will help to push home prices higher on average. Lenders are more willing to extend credit to qualified buyers and interest rates continue to be at very low levels. These factors will only increase the number of potential buyers in the marketplace, putting further pressure on sale prices. These trends seem to be true across much of the country as well as in central PA. Properly priced and prepared property will sell quickly, as seen in a reduction in the number of days-on-market for homes in this area. Another trend of the real estate market that is appearing in the Centre Region, as well as other areas in the country, is an increased demand for more efficient homes, often referred to as Green or High Performance Housing. As people realize that such housing can reduce operating costs, as well as improve the quality of life within the home, the demand for both new construction and renovations of existing homes to incorporate new technologies and strategies has increased.

Much of the demand for high performance housing is being driven by the younger buyers in the marketplace. Many of them understand that such an approach will save them money in the long run, add value to their homes and contribute to a better quality of life. In talking with contractors, builders and designers there is increased demand in the areas of more efficient HVAC systems, improved insulation, and the use of solar technologies. In new building as well as reconstruction there is an increasing interest in more open floor plans to improve air flow, maximize natural lighting, and use of passive solar design. The real estate market in the Centre Region continues to reflect the high quality of life we enjoy in central PA. 2016 looks to be a very good year for selling, buying and investing in real estate with indications that values, as well as interest rates, will continue to increase over time. The markets are changing. Since real estate is variable from one area to another it is advisable to work with a local Realtor, and other professionals, to provide you with accurate and current information so you can make the best decisions to meet your needs and goals.

We are happy to be serving you. The Greatest Wealth is Your Health!

Our bodies are designed to heal themselves. Given enough time and the right circumstances, the body is able to unwind any stress that has built up and is causing symptoms. The key is to determine your stressors (physical, chemical, or mental) before it is too late and you run out of time to recover. Cell dysfunction is the only true disease. Without cell dysfunction, no known disease would exist. Managing your stressors is the name of the game. Drinking water, getting enough sleep, moving every day, playing with those you care about, and eating real food all help to keep your stressors to a minimum. When we work with our patients, we focus on removing stressors through chiropractic care, muscle work, lymphatic drainage, and whole food nutrition therapies. This helps to give the body more healing energy. Each visit should build off of the last one so you can get to the point where your body is able to auto correct. We can help you to heal faster and empower you to take control of how you feel on a daily basis.

Nutrition- We utilize our in depth symptom survey, biofeedback technology, muscle testing, and an ongoing history to determine the fastest and most cost effective way to help our patients reach their personal goals using whole food supplements.

The FACTS About the hCG DIET

"I started losing right away...and thought, "Wow, this really works! "– Sandy D.

Is the hCG Diet An Effective Way To Lose Weight?

The hCG (human Chorionic Gonadotropin) is a glycoprotein composed of 244 amino acids and it results in rapid and safe weight loss when used in combination with a very low calorie diet in a medically supervised setting. Many patients have advised that it has had a positive effect on their hypothalamus, the part of the brain controlling metabolism. It is believed that hCG injections trigger the body to burn abnormal stored fat while at the same time protects your muscles, healthy fat and basal metabolic rate. Pharmaceutical hCG is FDA regulated and has shown dramatic and sustainable weight loss when administered under a physician's direction and can only be obtained by a licensed physician. Each person is different and our customized approach, tailored to individual needs, allows us to create achievable goals that are based on your lifestyle and personality. At Last Diet Ever, we understand your health challenges and know there are medical and natural options to help you lose extreme amounts of weight quickly, safely and without surgery. Our medical professionals are committed to help you make the changes in your life and health.

Last Diet Ever provides a 4 to 6 week program where men can lose up to a pound a day and women a little less with no hunger - which is often associated with other reduction regimens. This program is a wonderful weight loss program, but is not for everyone. Anytime a person wants to radically change their body weight, they need to get the facts to ensure a healthy long term outcome.

Can I order HCG Drops Over The Internet? Only hCG injections have been shown to raise blood levels of hCG, so that is the only acceptable way of taking hCG at this time. Any other way of taking hCG, such as drops, pills, or sprays, are likely dissolved before ever reaching the blood, and they do not raise blood levels; this would be like taking nothing at all. An injection is the only proven method of taking hCG at this time. Injections should only be taken with a prescription from a doctor, and under medical supervision. (Sheri L. Emma, MD)

Will I Feel Hungry and Deprived? By patient report, hCG reduces feelings of hunger. This allows them to eat very little comfortably. Why? It is believed the presence of hCG in the bloodstream takes the appetite away. hCG is a pro-hormone which helps the body make more hormones. Since hormone deficiency or imbalance is usually part of the reason for weight gain, whether it’s your thyroid, or menopause (or andropause), this hormone offers help.

Disclaimer: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not approved Human Chorionic Gonaditropin (hCG) for use as a treatment for obesity or weight control. The use of hCG for weight loss is as an "off label" use, which means that it is considered safe when prescribed by and under the guidance of a licensed physician. HCG is FDA-approved to treat health conditions other than weight loss and has been in existence to do so for over 50 years. Because an individual's weight loss depends on a number of factors, Last Diet Ever DOES NOT guarantee any specific weight loss results.

Women You Should Know

Necessity Yelded this Mother’s Invention

LEWISBURG – Mary Tiffin combined her background in fashion and technology to invent lighted runners’ safety gloves to guide the way. Mary was always an avid runner, but with a job and three boys, she often couldn’t find time for her runs until after dark. Runners like their hands free; flashlights weren’t ideal. Headlamps could aggravate her migraines. Runlites are lightweight gloves containing rechargeable LEDs that offer a 135-degree arc of light 40 feet ahead. The many steps to developing Runlites included a patent, trademark, Shark Tank, and Bucknell’s economic development help. “Starting a new business is a cross between a new puppy and an infant,” she said, “taking a lot of time and love.” Recently, she’s introduced Runlites at the Boston and New York marathons. Mary’s story is made even more special knowing that her husband passed away 10 years ago, leaving her the only parent of three young boys. No matter how fate has challenged Mary, she keeps on running, lighting the way for others with her invention, writing, and inspiring advice for living life to it’s fullest. (gorunlites.com)

Therapist Specializes in Women’s Pelvic Health

ALTOONA – Holly Strobel, D.P.T., has joined UPMC Altoona’s outpatient physical therapy department as a specialist in women’s pelvic health issues, such as incontinence. Holly received her training and the Certificate of Achievement in Pelvic Physical Therapy. She’s specially trained to help women deal with urinary incontinence and organ prolapse, two common conditions. Women with urine leakage during daily activities (urinary incontinence), pelvic pain, frequent urination, and other problems are advised to see their primary care physician first, Holly said. The physician must refer a patient for physical therapy. For some women, it’s joint pain or inability to get up and to the bathroom on time. “It’s no longer necessary for a woman to suffer,” Holly said. “Help is available and many women experience these issues.”

Realizing the Dream of Her Own Salon

MILTON – Amy Keister graduated from beauty school in 2000 and worked for others while raising three young children. She had a dream of opening her own hair salon, but knew that she needed more than her excellent salon skills. She needed to know how to run a business. Amy first approached the Bucknell University Small Business Development Center in 2014, when her youngest started kindergarten. Amy searched for potential locations while the SBDC provided her with financial-planning assistance. When she came across a spacious Victorian style brick house on Front Street in Milton, Amy knew that she had found the perfect spot for her business. She opened Brick House Hair last year. “If you have a dream, put it into manageable terms, stay focused, and believe in yourself,” she said. She also thanks her “super-supportive husband and family” and the “fabulous service” provided by the SBDC.

Helping Others Reach Their Dreams

HUNTINGDON – Miranda Peruso believes in “giving back” to her community and she does so in many different ways. Born and raised in Huntingdon, Miranda graduated from Juniata College in 2000 with a degree in Business Communications. In 2008, she joined Juniata College in their fund-raising endeavors, most recently as Director of Annual Giving. As such, she is in charge of annual fundraising events with scholarships as a main beneficiary. This is done by phone, internet, and direct mail. The liberal arts college celebrated its 140th anniversary in April with the 140K In A Day fundraising effort, which, indeed, raised more than $140,000 in a single day. She loves to be of service providing scholarship funds to students who have exhausted all other financing sources. In addition, her community involvement includes the boards of the Huntingdon County United Way and the J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. Her husband also works at Juniata College, and they have two children, ages 8 and 3. May June 2016
