Restless Leg Syndrome and Chronic Venous Disease Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a disorder that involves abnormal sensation and movement in the legs. People with RLS experience an unpleasant feeling or sensation in their legs when they lie down or when they are sitting still for an extended period of time. Most commonly this occurs when they are getting ready to go to sleep or when they are relaxing after a long day. Most people will feel a strong urge to move, and while moving sometimes makes the symptoms lessen, the need to constantly reposition and move makes rest and sleep challenging. Most people with RLS complain of not getting enough restful sleep. When you sleep poorly, your daily tasks become more difficult and work productivity is noticeably less efficient. Often times a clear cause for restless legs is not evident which is why it is important to see a doctor and get an accurate diagnosis and then help to manage your symptoms. While some people who seek treatment do not have any underlying problem, many patients who have varicose veins and RLS often describe improvement or resolution of RLS symptoms following treatment of their varicose veins. The main symptom of RLS is an irresistible urge to move because of uncomfortable and sometimes painful sensations deep within a part of your body. In the case of venous insufficiency, blood that has already delivered oxygen to the tissues of the legs is inefficiently removed from the legs and causes the muscles and nerves in the leg to begin to react to this. The body makes an effort to move the legs and make the muscles help pump blood back to the heart and lungs where it is meant to be. When the blood is pumped out of the legs the symptoms get better. Most patients will describe RLS symptoms that are worse after a physically active day.

I HAD NO IDEA I DIDN’T HAVE TO LIVE W

At first, symptoms may be mild and occur intermittently. However, symptoms often get worse with age. People over 50 often describe their symptoms related to this condition as occurring daily and can become a problem and cause a decline in quality of life. If you experience these symptoms, you need to be seen by a medical professional and have a comprehensive history and physical examination. If you have symptoms of restless legs, visible varicose veins, swollen legs or discolored skin on your lower legs, you should be evaluated for underlying chronic venous insufficiency. The professionals at Circulatory Centers are well equipped to evaluate you and determine if an underlying treatable cause for your symptoms exists.

A New Approach to Treating Unsightly Facial and Legs Veins HOW DOES EXCEL V™ WORK? Excel V™ treats vascular conditions by administering a unique high power green laser that is absorbed by the abnormal blood vessels in the skin. The laser heats the abnormal vessels causing the vein walls to collapse and seal shut. Over time, the vessels will no longer be visible.

HOW IS THE PROCEDURE PERFORMED? The procedure is performed in the comfort of our office. Unlike other procedures, injections or topical anesthesia are not required.

HOW MANY TREATMENTS ARE NEEDED? The number of treatments depends on various parameters, including the size, thickness and color of the vascular lesion. Superficial vascular lesions are usually easiest to treat; some patients might see significant improvement after just one treatment. However, individual results vary, and final results may not be apparent for several weeks or months.

…THE VEIN ERASER

IS THE TREATMENT PAINFUL?

Facial and legs veins are now a thing of the past. The Excel V™ laser system by Cutera® safely and effectively treats a broad range of vascular skin conditions, from superficial blemishes and skin discoloration to large lesions and deep vascular scars. Its high level of customization makes Excel V™ so effective at treating so many different conditions such as: • Rosacea • Spider veins in legs and face

Most patients experience a mild stinging sensation as the pulses of light energy are delivered through the hand piece. The skin is cooled as the treatment is performed—making it very tolerable. Following the treatment, the pain is minimal to nonexistent.

WILL MY INSURANCE COVER THE EXCEL V™ TREATMENTS?

• Telangiectasia

The vascular and benign pigmented conditions the Excel V™ treats are considered cosmetic and therefore are not covered by insurance.

• Cherry angioma • Sun spots

•  •  •  •  •

• Port wine stains Excel V™ provides: • Fast, immediate results—resume normal activities immediately after treatment • No injections and no long-term side effects • Treatment for men and women—with any skin type

Ten Tips for an Unplugged Summer By Sara Merritt Summer is just around the corner and if you’re like me, then you can remember the joyfilled days of riding bikes, walking barefoot, and lazy days swimming at the community pool. Kids today, even with all their tech gadgets and access to hundreds of television channels, can still enjoy an “unplugged” summer! Here are 10 tips for getting your kids to unplug: 1. Summer Bucket List Challenge Encourage your kiddo to make a list of local places they’d like to visit, things they’d like to do like “learn to rollerskate”, and then encourage them to make an artful display of their Summer Bucket List. Kids can add pictures by drawing or clipping photos from magazines. When they get bored, direct them to their list! 2. Get Crafty Gather up art materials around the house {construction paper, glue, bits of ribbon, scraps of fabric, etc.} and put them together in a bin. Remember that the process of making art is just as important as the finished product and don’t worry if your child’s creation isn’t Pinterest-worthy! Encourage your child to be creative and watch as minutes turn to hours of unplugged fun. 3. Make a Fort Whether it’s a rainy day of fort building inside, an elaborate tree house in the backyard, or a tent set up on the lawn, there’s a lot of fun to be had within. Toss in some extra blankets, books, snacks, and a friend or two and let the kids make their own summer memories. 4. Parks & Playgrounds This area is sprinkled with some of the best parks and playgrounds for families. Pack some sunscreen and plenty of water and let them run and climb. Chances are good that you may make a new friend or two while keeping an eye on the kids. 5. Start a Business Do you have a child who is always trying to think of ways to get money? Encourage their spirit of

entrepreneurship and let them open their own lemonade stand or host a yard sale. Your preteen may even be ready for more responsibility like being a mother’s helper! 6. Family Reading Time Take a break from the sun and instead of turning on the TV, enjoy an hour of reading. Even though big kids can read independently, they still get pleasure from listening to their parents read aloud. Set a book goal and keep track of all the books you read over the summer. 7. Game Night {or Day!} The days are long, so why not spend some time playing board games. Parents can join in or encourage your kids to play together or invite the neighbors over for some fun. Favorites in our house are Headbanz, Zingo, and the classic Chutes & Ladders. 8. Ride Bicycles Bicycle riding in the summer was my favorite method of transportation. My friends and I rode our bikes everywhere, but times have changed. There are more cars on the road operated by distracted drivers. The Buffalo Valley Rail Trail is a great place for families to ride and to teach children how to watch for traffic and cross intersections carefully. 9. Backyard Games Neighborhood kids, a ball, old baskets they find in the garage… let kids get innovative and create their own backyard games. 10. Water Play Hot day? Give kids a bucket of soapy water and let them host their own bike wash or simply let them run through the backyard sprinkler. Never underestimate the great fun in a family or neighborhood water battle – all you need is water balloons, a hose, a bucket or two, and a sense of humor. Student Loans

when getting a four year degree, a minority of students actually graduate in four years. Being diligent about keeping the length of time in college low will typically lower the amount you owe after graduation. Student loan debt may be a problem in the U.S. but don’t make it your problem.

By Judy L. Loy, ChFC®, Retirement Income Certified Professional® and CEO of Nestlerode & Loy, Inc., an investment firm located in Centre County and serving the world. By now, we may all be familiar with the mounting student loan debt in our country. Recent reports show that the total outstanding is now over $1 trillion and is next in line behind home mortgages for the largest debt outstanding in the U.S. Many are concerned that this could be a bubble and at a minimum it impedes the next generation’s ability to move forward with life’s major purchases. Having large student debt can certainly make it difficult to afford a mortgage. What are some ways to avoid or minimize the student loan trap? The first thing is to start early to plan for the eventuality. If you have recently had a child or have one in grade school through high school, building money in an account geared toward college can help tremendously when the time comes. There are many accounts available with varying degrees of tax benefits: 529 plans, Educational IRAs (Coverdell Education Savings Account), or a Uniform Gift (transfer) to Minors Act account. These accounts allow for investments over time that can compound and be used later to pay tuition and other college costs. After opening one, parents, grandparents and friends can give gifts of money to these accounts. If student loans are required when your child does get to college, it is important to minimize what is borrowed. Rather than taking the largest loan that you can, take only as much as you need. Also,

SUPPORT

to Be Supported M.S. Awareness Week recently ended but that doesn’t mean we will stop trying to find a cure. This is a cause that is very significant to me. Four years ago I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. I was training for my first marathon when my legs went numb. After months of trouble shooting, the doctor was able to confirm my diagnosis. This came as a shock. Initially I wanted to keep the information to myself, and not tell people (for fear of being treated differently). I told only my closest friends and family, but after giving the information some time to settle and spending the weekend in the hospital for my first treatment to get feeling back in my legs I realized how important friends, family, and support from others are in my life and decided that I no longer was going to hide the fact that I have M.S., instead I was going to do all that I can in my power to help find a solution to this disease. I realized that is not something that would slow me down, or determine who I am. Soon after my diagnosis, my friends, family, and friends decided to make a difference, and to bring awareness about M.S. They began participating in the BIKE MS CITRUS TOUR, which was a 100 mile bicycle ride to help raise funds for M.S. research. This is my new mission to prove to myself and to others just how strong I am by participating in BIKE MS for our fourth year. For the fourth year a group of my friends, family, and former co-workers who are part of my team will take on this 100 mile challenge. We ride 50 miles for two days form Polk County to Orlando and back. The event May June 2015

is the first weekend of May this year, and all the donations collected help increase awareness and raise money to help find better treatment for M.S. and potentially a cure. At this point the team has grown to 14 members and includes seven Orange County Public School employees. In the past three years our team has raised over $10,000 each year. This year I have added a new challenge and my PA family and friends are willing to join in riding in the PA Keystone Country M.S. ride which is 75 miles on day 1 and 70 miles on day 2 from Hollidaysburg to State College. Some of you may know my Dad, Gene Weller, who has been running the Toys for Tots drive in Centre County for 28 years. He’s been taking the challenge with me by riding in each ride and I’m so glad for his support. Thank you for letting me share this information with you. If you are interested in helping me raise money for my team, or would like to be a part of my bike team (I know that there are some avid bikers here who would like to step up to the challenge) please check out the following link or contact me. Even if you are not an avid biker but would like to try – that is fine too! Remember that I am just back on my bike after three months on a scooter from breaking my ankle in November. I am doing this in honor of a friend just diagnosed with M.S. http://main.nationalmssociety.org/site/TR/Bike/ FLCBikeEvents?team id+401197&pg-team&fe id+247786& ga=1.191906026.1527898059.1422821183 12

Loose Weight and Save Your Teeth? Yes they are Related....and Yes, We Can Help You With Both!!! sugars and chemical in our diets. Not only teeth, but your skin, acne breakouts, and even eczema can result from a poor diet. So we wanted to help all of these issues also. As stated earlier, with 75% of Americans overweight, a chief complaint of most is obesity. I-lipo, our laser liposuction procedure, is a sure way to emilinate those stubborn areas of unwanted fat. It is not a fix for an obese person who hasn't made a lifestyle change yet with better nutritional habits and exercise. However, it is an invaluable tool for those people who have made the committment to a healthier lifestyle, and just want to get back into that pair of jeans or look better in a bathing suit! I-lipo results in a long term permanent weight loss reduction as long as your new nutritional habits are maintained. It is painless, and just like with our dental work, it is very affordable with no interest low monthly payments. One building, 2 amazing opportunites to start achieving a healthier lifestyle. This healthy new you will be reflected in your new, beautiful, smile and in your new, fit, healthy body. Confidence is everything. Confidence helps secure jobs or meet that special someone. Confidence brings people out of depressive states, and changes their lives. Carnicella and Asssociates and Transformations Laser & Imaging Institute can help you achieve a new found confidence. Weight loss, a fit body, a beautiful smile is all within your reach, as long as you are educated on the ways to achieve it.

Sugar. Sugar causes weight gain. Sugar causes tooth decay. Sugar is almost impossible to cut out of our diets. Some try, they call it the caveman diet, vegetables and meat.... No Sugar. With this nutritional change, you would loose weight AND you would not even need a Nicole toothbrush, floss, or listerine. If Carnicella the bacteria present in our mouths DMD, MAGD do not have carbohydrates as a food source, they cannot produce the acidic by-products that destroy our teeth. Although the value of eliminating sugar for oral health is valid, what is more important for the general public, for the 75% of Americans who are overweight, is the value of eliminating sugar for their waist band. How likely is a complete elimination of sugar though? Even though sugar feeds cancer cells, and the elimination of it will cause cancer cells to die, those battling cancer still can't cut it our of their diet; even if it is a do or die situation. Sugar is like a drug, we need it, we crave it, and when it is mixed with chemicals in sodas and processed foods we actually become addicted to it. So how do we protect our teeth and loose weight! We need some help, help both of our offices can provide. Nutritional counseling and purification programs, essential oil therpies and education have become a forefront of our offices' focus. These techniques and procedures will help you restructure your life in such a way that will enable you to make educated choices about food, learn what forms of sugar are bad for you, take proper supplements, learn exercise techniques, and complete I-lipo series which will make you look, feel, and actually be healthier. We can straighten your teeth, whiten your teeth, reconstruct your smile, fix your cavities, and place crowns with the latest and greatest technologies and materials. However, if you aren't educated on the habits and nutritional deficiencies that put you on our doorstep in the first place, all of this beautiful work will eventually need redone! So eductaing and helping you prevent these issues from reoccurring is our new main objective at our practice. Our team is trained in all areas of prevention and nutritional adjuncts to help you not only have a more stable oral health, but a more stable over all health. Again, unfortunately teeth aren't perceived to be as important as body image and weight loss, even though they should be. We don't want to just help people with what we feel is a priority, we wanted to be able to help them in anyway we could, which is how the spa nicely compliments our dental practice. Did you know that headaches affect 9 out of 10 Americans? Headaches can fall into several categories and are listed below. 1. TENSION HEADACHES are the most common type of headache experienced. They can cause achy, dull pressure around the forehead, temples, and back of the neck. Often times they are caused by muscle imbalances due to over contraction in the scalp and neck areas or increased stress. They do not usually cause nausea or vomiting. Tension headaches can occur in children and adults. 2. MIGRAINES are associated with moderate to severe pain and are often described as pounding or throbbing pain. They can cause symptoms such as dizziness, vomiting, blurry vision, and light, sound, or odor sensitivity. Migraines are believed to be due to changes in the blood vessels in the head, genetics, or food sensitivities. 3. CLUSTER HEADACHES are the least common. However, they are the most severe. This type of headache is defined as constant stabbing, burning, or throbbing pain, which is often located behind one eye. They occur one to three times a day and then disappear for weeks or years. 4. SINUS HEADACHES are described as dull constant pain or pressure into the cheekbones, bridge of nose, and forehead. This headache usually accompanies other symptoms such as nasal discharge, fever, and ear soreness. Spring and fall are the most common times of the year for sinus headaches due to the outside environment of flowers blooming, pollen, and leaves.

Family doctor can provide care for generations By Drs. LeeAnna Lyne and Andrea Benoit — Susquehanna Health Family Medicine at Loyalsock If you’re looking for ways to simplify healthcare for you and your family, consider the continuity of a family physician. Equipped and trained to work with patients at all ages and phases of life, your family physician can become a trusted, knowledgeable partner in managing your health and that of your spouse, children and parents, too.

In addition, recommendations for your children to establish solid, healthy habits will be steeped in data and insights gleaned from the elder members of your family tree. He or she can help orchestrate changes within the home environment, such as having a parent quit smoking or make dietary and activity changes, to impact the entire family’s health.

Considering that just a few decades ago doctors were called to the family home to attend to births and illnesses for every family member, the concept of a multi-generational doctor isn’t really new. Your doctor’s knowledge of your family’s medical history, personalities, environment and dynamics, helps him or her give you excellent care.

When your physician knows that you’re living with or in regular contact with an elderly parent or a family member whose health is compromised, he or she can recommend certain vaccinations and precautions to help you keep your loved ones safe.

One central location for all of your physician appointments is ideal for you, too. You can schedule multiple appointments for the same visit or have the entire family receive their annual flu vaccinations at one location.

A Family Tradition Many medical conditions are a factor of genetics. When a physician cares for multiple family generations, they have a good understanding of your underlying risk factors for conditions like heart disease, certain cancers and diabetes, and they can work with you to prevent and detect changes in your health status at the earliest stage. Recommendations for some health screenings such as for colorectal cancer or breast cancer have special considerations based on family history. When your entire family is in one doctor’s care, he or she can ensure that these important considerations don’t fall through the cracks.

The Big Picture Your health evolves from more than genetics, and as the main care provider for your entire family, your physician has access to many more clues about factors that could be impacting your health. Consider a video with the camera focused on an acorn in a tree and then pulling back to reveal the entire scene—hundreds of trees, wildlife and weather. This is similar to the insight your physician gains by caring for your entire family. As you accompany your children to appointments, your physician may hear that you’re planning a tropical family vacation and remind you of the proper vaccinations. Your physician knows when you have your hands full with energetic children and can make recommendations to help you be successful with goals like breastfeeding or exercising based on how much familial support you have. When your family physician knows your parent or one of your children is struggling with a major health concern, this informs the

questions he or she will ask about you, your spouse’s and other children’s health and ability to cope as well.

Starting Small During your pregnancy, you can request your family doctor to treat your newborn. This familiarity from the moment of birth creates a special bond for all of you. There’s also convenience in those initial follow-up visits where your doctor can check on you and your baby in one visit. Awareness of your health history can provide cues to underlying problems such as post-partum depression or anemia that might otherwise be missed. Some family physicians can even provide obstetric care. As a link between medical care for generations—spouse, children, parents and even grandparents, the family doctor can have a positive impact on you and your baby’s health during pregnancy and for life.

Drs. LeeAnna Lyne and Andrea Benoit of Susquehanna Health Family Medicine at Loyalsock are primary care physicians who are trained and experienced in providing obstetric care.

For questions on family medicine and obstetric care or to schedule an appointment, call (570) 320-7800.

2015 - Off to a GOOD Start The spring has started off strong for real estate, with reports of multiple offers for well-priced and properly staged homes. Investors and commercial interests are returning to the market, and the historically low interest rates all are contributing to create a market that is quickly eating away at the inventory. Fortunately, as summer approaches there is an influx of newer properties.

Yes, the real estate market is looking good in central Pennsylvania, but it should be noted that it is still a good idea to seek professional counsel in a variety of areas before getting too deeply involved in any real estate transaction. Changes have occurred in how business is done and while conditions are improving there are many factors that need to be considered for anybody to have a successful experience, whether you are buying, selling or investing.

Increasingly buyers are looking for homes that have reduced operating costs and make efficient use of space. Larger homes still hold their own in this area, however buyers are more frequently looking to find homes that reflect a more frugal approach to home ownership.

Fortunately, some things have not changed much at all, including what a great place central PA is to call home. Contact your favorite local Realtor for more information on finding just the right answers for your needs and dreams.

There also is an increase in the Senior share (55 +) of the market. This should not be surprising as this area offers many excellent features for retirement and many opportunities for an active lifestyle.

Call me at 814-574-9267 today to get started!

One exciting aspect of housing is the development and application of new technologies and materials. Both residential housing and commercial interests are reaping the benefits of better built structures and properly designed properties. There seems to be growing interest in the use of automation in homes. Increasingly consumers can regulate their energy use to meet their needs as well as providing a safer, more convenient place to live.

In the U.S., Mothers' Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May. The first observance was in Philadelphia, Pa. in 1907 based on suggestions by Julia Ward Howe in 1872 and Anna Jarvis in 1907.

• Always change your underwear; you never know when you'll have an accident.

In 1908, Ana Jarvis, from Grafton, West Virginia, began a campaign to establish a national Mother's Day. Jarvis persuaded her mother's church in Grafton to celebrate Mother's Day on the anniversary of her mother's death and then in Philadelphia when Jarvis moved there. Jarvis and others began a letter-writing campaign to ministers, businessmen, and politicians to establish a national Mother's Day. They were successful. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson officially proclaimed Mother's Day a national observance to be held each year on the second Sunday of May.

• Don't make that face or it'll freeze. • Be careful or you'll put your eye out. • What if everyone jumped off a cliff? Would you do it, too? • You have enough dirt behind those ears to grow potatoes! • Close that door! Were you born in a barn? • If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all.

Central PA Hometowns: Where Our Hearts Are

Hollidaysburg

Coming Up This Summer

Hollidaysburg is the Blair County seat and home to nearly 6,000 people. It’s just south of Altoona on the Frankstown Branch of the Juniata River, making it an important port on the Pennsylvania Main Line Canal from 1834 to 1854. In the past, the borough had foundries and machine shops, a silk mill, Pennsylvania Railroad switching yard, and Conrail car shop. There are a number of railroad-related sites still in operation by Norfolk Southern. The borough was founded in 1796, named after Irish immigrants Adam and William Holliday. It became the county seat in 1846 when Blair County was organized out of a portion of Huntingdon County. In 1989, the local Historic District was designated, preserving the unique architecture, including roughly 400 buildings. The town’s center is known as The Diamond, featuring the imposing Gothic Revival courthouse, completed in 1876. The famous toy, Slinky, is manufactured within Hollidaysburg by Poof-Slinky, Inc. (formerly James Industries, Inc.). More than a quarter billion Slinkys have been manufactured since 1945. The Diamond, Canal Basin Park, and Legion Memorial Park are centers for community events and celebrations. Nearby are Altoona railroad museum, Horseshoe Curve, Canoe Creek State Park, and historic Fort Roberdeau.

• Discovery Garden Plant Sale – May 16, 9a.m.-2p.m., Legion Memorial Park, benefiting Discovery Garden Project and Skills Foundation • Hollidaysburg Community Band concerts – May 25, June 28, July 26, and September 7 at Canal Basin Park • Allegheny Street Cruise-in – May 29, 6-9 p.m., downtown • Altoona Symphony Orchestra Concert – August 29 • Downtown Live Summer Concerts – five dates in June – September • Farm and Craft Market – June–September, Montgomery Street off the Diamond

Dear Nutritionist, I’m so tired all the time. My lab tests say everything is normal…it sure doesn’t feel that way! Can you — Sharon, Dubois, PA help me? Dear Sharon, This is one of the most common complaints we hear. YES! We can help you. This is what we did for Sharon: The first step was to determine causes of her fatigue. We used the TRIAD test, a cutting edge functional test that is like interviewing your body about what’s out of balance. Here is what we found: Sharon had hidden food allergies to eggs and dairy. She never knew, never reacted to these foods. But they were causing some of her fatigue and as it turned out, most of her muscle and joint pain. She had a bacterial infection in her small intestine, causing much of the chronic bloating and gas she experienced. This infection was generating ammonia, creating brain fog, fatigue and frequent urination. She was missing some critical B vitamins. The amount in her multivitamin was not meeting her needs. These missing vitamins are needed to convert amino acids (proteins) into energy. Not having them in adequate supply was causing some of her fatigue. Her results: Just one month after following the program Sharon reports that her digestion is excellent, all joint and muscle pain is gone, and she no longer requires a nap in the afternoon. Her sleep has also improved. Her energy is about 75% better and we feel certain that it will continue to improve as the nutritional depletions are corrected over time. As it turned out she had several causes of fatigue. They all needed to be identified and addressed in order to give her the best results. Not sure? Schedule a Free 15 minute consult to determine what’s right for you!

A New Spring You Spring is one of my four favorite seasons of the year. My clients come in dragging from the late-winter blahs. They don’t look bad… they just look like they did all winter. And like winter, they are ready for it to just go away. They’re starting to shed the heavy bulky clothes of winter. As the weather is changing from cold to warm, their clothes are changing to lighter weight fabrics and brighter colors. But something is still wrong and they’ve come to me hoping to find a fix. Well the fix is here! What’s needed is a shorter lighter-weight hair line in the back, to get that warm bulk off the neck. Take a little length off the top and sides so the hairstyle can move freely in the spring breeze. Finally, finish it off with some highlights to reflect the spring sunshine. Or, a loose texture wave to create body and movement. The resulting change will put spring back in anyone’s step. But even better, to see images of the before and after would be amazing.

name in a drawing for a free spring hair make-over. On June 30th my lovely assistant will draw your name. Then during the first two weeks of July I will perform a magical (mutually agreed upon) hair makeover for you. Further, “Sincere Touch Photography” will be on hand to shoot before and after images of your spring transition. Then as a grand finale to a fun adventure, you’re before and after images will be published in the July/August edition of The Women’s Journal. Sound like fun? It will be! I’m looking forward to working with you, our spring make-over winner.

Would you like to see the results of your spring transition and get to show it off to friends and family?

Is Your Hearing Aid Healthy? Dr. Sandra Chamberlin, Au.D., CCC-A is a PA state licensed audiologist with over 20 years of experience. Education: B.S. Marywood College, 1989, M.S. Vanderbilt University,1991, Au.D. Pennsylvania College of Optometry, 2007

When was the last time you’ve seen your audiologist for a hearing aid check? Regular visits are important to maintain the effectiveness of your hearing aid. They can and do malfunction and your hearing can and will change over time. It is recommended that you visit your audiologist every three to six months to have your hearing aid professionally cleaned and checked. They should also be cleaned and checked at home every day. The most common reasons hearing aids malfunction are moisture and ear wax build up. Ear wax buildup can clog your hearing aid and decrease the volume or block the sound completely. Moisture damage can come from sweating, muggy weather, rain, the swimming pool, or just by leaving your hearing aid on the bathroom sink when you shower. Routine check-ups are essential to ensuring your hearing aid’s peak performance.

DAILY CARE: • Perform listening checks: contact your audiologist if the aid doesn’t sound quite right. • Check batteries: batteries typically last one week. • Clean the hearing aid regularly with a dry cloth, brush or pipe cleaner given to you by the audiologist • Keep your hearing aid in a drying container: this prolongs the hearing aid’s life by removing moisture. • Avoid feedback: if this occurs frequently, it could mean your hearing aid is improperly fitted or there is a build-up of earwax in your ear.

Did You Know YOUR Dog Can Get The Flu? Canine Influenza has been a recent popular topic, making the headlines on local and national news shows. The Canine Flu, also known as H3N8, has been around since 1999. Dogs have no natural immunity to this virus. They can shed this virus for 7-10 days before showing any signs of being sick. Symptoms can last for 2-3 weeks as the virus runs its course; sadly 20% of dogs infected will die. While the virus itself is not deadly, it is the secondary infections that can cause hemorrhagic pneumonia and high fevers. Intense medical treatment is needed to help these dogs pull through.

Who is at risk? Dogs that frequent dog parks, doggy day care, boarding facilities or travel. If your dog sits at home on the couch and never leaves your property, the chance of being exposed is low. If your pet fits into the at risk category, please let your veterinarian know. Your dog will need an initial vaccine and then a booster 2-3 weeks later to protect them from Canine Influenza.

Paternity is Important Many people believe that when a man’s name is indicated on a child’s birth certificate, that name is enough to establish paternity. However, that is not necessarily the case, particularly since the mother can list anyone she wants as the father of the child. Many people also believe that only DNA testing will establish paternity. Again, that is not true, as there are numerous ways in which paternity can be established. First, there is the presumption of fatherhood. If the man and the biological mother were legally married to each other, and the child was born during the marriage the man is presumed to be the father. Another presumption of paternity is when the man when the man takes the child into his home and holds the child out as his natural child and/or supports the child. In order to rebut the presumption, a man disputing he is the father may petition the Court to have a blood test performed. Another way to rebut the presumption is if a married man can prove, by clear, direct and convincing evidence that he did not have access to his wife during the relevant time. However, there is also a concept in PA called “Paternity by estoppel” which is merely the legal determination that because of a person’s conduct, for example, holding the child out as his own or supporting the child, that person, regardless of his true biological status, will not be permitted to deny parentage; the law will not permit a person in these situations to challenge the status that he or she has previously accepted.

Establishing paternity is important for the child. The child is entitled to financial support, as well as care and comfort from his or her father. The child may be entitled to benefits from Social Security or Estate planning. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me, Lance T. Marshall, at (814) 308-8439.

Dense Breasts Benefit from 3-D Mammography It’s harder to spot cancer on mammograms of dense breasts. Dense breasts are common and not harmful, resulting from normal causes like pregnancy, hormone changes, body weight, and genetics. The extra fibrous and glandular tissue can increase with age. Only 10% of women have extremely dense breasts, making it more difficult to find lumps.

women should receive an annual mammogram starting at age 40. A variety of risk factors may suggest you start sooner or have them more frequently. Though digital mammograms are still the gold standard for cancer detection, 3D Mammography adds an extra layer of clarity and peace of mind.

However, if you have dense breasts, you may go through additional callbacks and false positives. The newest technology for breast imaging, 3D Mammography, has been proven to be a better detector of abnormalities in dense breasts. J.C. Blair’s new Genius 3D mammography allows the radiologist to examine breast tissue layer by layer like a CAT scan, rather than a single two-dimensional digital x-ray.

Leading the region in

3D Mammography

J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital in Huntingdon was the first in the region to offer the additional screening power of 3D Mammography, with the added ability to find very small cancers or rule out some false positives – including for women with dense breasts.
