What if I Don’t Receive Treatment for my Varicose Veins? It is estimated that 30% of American adults are affected by varicose veins. Heredity is the number one contributing factor for both genders, but because puberty, pregnancy, menopause, birth control pills, estrogen, and progesterone can affect the disease, women are inherently 50% more likely to develop the disease. Potential complications from untreated varicose veins do exist and their severity will vary from mild irritation to serious depending on individual circumstances. Many people will experience more common symptoms of pain, fatigue, swelling of the legs, and even restless leg syndrome. With more advanced disease, superficial thrombophlebitis (severe swelling), hyperpigmentation (darkening of the skin), lipodermosclerosis (hardened, glistening skin), venous leg ulcers, spontaneous bleeding, and a potentially life-threatening condition called deep vein thrombosis (DVT) can occur. Because varicose veins can alter the normal blood flow pattern, the most serious potential complication is (DVT). It is often first noticed as a pulling or pressure type sensation in the lower leg and can be quite painful. Associated symptoms may also include warmth, redness and swelling. Patients with the following conditions are at a greater risk for developing DVT: over 60 years of age, recent surgery, prior DVT, prolonged inactivity, cancer, obesity, pregnancy and postpartum, and infection. Treatment of DVT involves blood thinners and further medical testing to determine the extent of the clot. If a blood clot travels to the lungs it is called a pulmonary embolus and the outcome can be fatal. Varicose veins are a chronic and progressive condition. By the time a patient notices visible varicose veins or experiences symptoms of leg heaviness, nighttime cramping, swelling, achiness, tenderness or has experienced phlebitis, they need to be evaluated by a physician. Contemporary management of venous disease, including varicose and spider veins, involves obtaining a comprehensive history and examination along with a duplex ultrasound, a non-invasive, painless test that determines if the symptoms are related to underlying venous problem. Once a thorough evaluation is performed, a detailed treatment plan is developed. Conservative measures are often required by insurance carriers including, but not limited to, use of compression stockings and anti-inflammatory medications. In cases where venous insufficiency is identified as the underlying cause, a minimally invasive ablation procedure is done. In cases where the varicose veins are not associated with an underlying valve issue, sclerotherapy is often recommended. Sclerotherapy involves a series of injections with a medication that allows the blood flow to be rerouted to healthier veins as it dissolves the damaged vein into the body. It may also be performed after ablation treatment to help lessen the pressure and improve the appearance of the leg. With the evaluation and treatment methods available today, spider veins, varicose veins and venous insufficiency can be treated at a level of effectiveness and safety previously unattainable with the more old fashioned methods, such as vein stripping. Success depends on careful assessment of the problem by a knowledgeable phlebologist (a physician specializing in varicose vein treatment). At Circulatory Centers, our physicians are all board certified and experienced in evaluation and treatment of varicose veins. We are active members of the American College of Phlebology and stay current with the latest advancements in diagnosis and treatment.

Healthy Veins are Essential to Healthy Living PReVentIVe VeIn cARe
If you experience tired, achy, painful legs, you are not alone. Varicose veins affect over 20% of the United States adult population. Although usually thought to be no more than a cosmetic nuisance, varicose veins can be the source of more serious complications.
Self-care—such as exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, eating well, elevating your legs, wearing compression stockings and controlling other health conditions—can help prevent varicose veins or keep them from getting worse. However, if you are concerned about how your veins look and feel, you should know there are virtually pain-free treatments available. Walk in, walk out.
• • • • • WhAt IS VeIn dISeASe? Healthy veins have valves which open and close to assist the return of blood to the heart. Venous disease occurs if these valves become damaged, allowing the backward flow of blood in the legs. When blood cannot be properly returned through the vein, it can pool in the legs, leading to a feeling of heaviness and fatigue—causing varicose veins and other skin changes. While usually not lifethreatening, venous disorders still affect your circulatory system and can lead to more serious complications, such as ulcers, blood clots and/or stroke if left untreated. Spider veins are similar to varicose veins, but are usually fine and superficial. Spider veins are found closer to the skin’s surface and are often red or blue.

It provides fast, immediate results without injections or long-term side effects on conditions such as rosacea, spider veins in the legs and face, telangiectasia, cherry angioma, sun spots and port wine stains. Aesthetic services are also available for treatment of common skin conditions. Treatments can repair damage, open pores, remove dead cells and toxins, tighten and firm the skin, and add vital nutrients and water which reduce the appearance of wrinkles and dry skin.
WhAt cAUSeS VeIn dISeASe? Most vein disease has a strong genetic link, however, the more time we spend sedentary or standing on our feet, the more we increase the likelihood that our veins will have difficulty returning the blood.
• • • • •
The most common factors are: • genetics
• body weight
• age
• gender
• sedentary lifestyle
Women are about two times more likely to suffer from varicose veins than men. Pregnancy and hormonal changes can increase susceptibility to varicose veins.

Long Term Care- Policy Options By Jody M. Sharer, Investment Advisor and CCO of Nestlerode & Loy, Inc., an investment firm located in Centre County and serving the world
called a 1035 exchange. This tax free exchange eliminates any taxable gain you would pay on taking cash out of these accounts by allowing tax-free payouts for qualified expenses. This allows you to use money that may not be active in your retirement budget and put it to use as coverage should you need Long Term Care. Another benefit of a one lump sum policy premium is that you will not see premium increases as you age.
When you think about your golden years, where do you picture yourself? Perhaps it is sitting on a rocker on the front porch surrounded by family, or spending sunny mornings walking on the beach, or volunteering your time to your favorite charities. Many of us look forward to living out our golden years in the best of health; active both physically and mentally.
Everyone has different needs and will approach purchasing a Long Term Care policy based on their goals. Take the time to speak with your financial advisor about adding this protection as part of your overall retirement picture. This additional step in planning for your golden years will help ease your mind.
Unfortunately, as we age we may become partially, or even completely, dependent on family members or others to assist us in the various activities of daily living. For this reason, many people are considering Long Term Care policies for protection of their assets as well as providing their loved ones with the knowledge that Mom or Dad is taken care of.
Nestlerode & Loy Investment Advisors offer brokerage and investment services to individuals, businesses and non-profits. For a review of your Women’s Journal Sept/Oct 2015 investments and help planning for retirement, please call Judy Loy, Prepared by Janet Chambers, Beacon Marketing, 814-643-3385 ChFC®, RICP® at 814-238-6249 or email jloy@nestlerode.com. janet@callbeacon.com
Purchasing a policy to cover your Long Term Care needs isn’t for everyone. When you purchase a LTC policy you select the waiting period, the daily or monthly benefit, the location of services, and other options. Additional options are Hybrid LTC policies or Partnership Plans. In this article I will explain some of the benefits and tradeoffs of purchasing a Hybrid plan for your Long Term Care insurance coverage.
Will you be able to enjoy your
Hybrid LTC insurance policies combine Life Insurance Policies with Long Term Care Riders. The primary benefit to a Hybrid plan is that there is no “use it or lose it” proposition. What this means is, if you don’t use the LTC portion, your beneficiaries still receive the death benefit tax free. If you carry a mortgage and have dependent children, a Hybrid plan which includes Life Insurance may be of benefit to you. Of course there is a trade-off. Hybrid plans generally will pay out less than a Traditional LTC policy and they may not offer the inflation protection available in a traditional LTC policy. A benefit of a Hybrid policy is that people who have been turned down for traditional LTC policies due to health issues may still qualify. As with other whole life policies, you may have the benefit of having the cash value or premiums returned to you should you cancel the policy.
retirement? For a confidential review of your financial situation, please contact Judy Loy, ChFC®, RICP®, at 814.238.6249.
Although there are companies that offer policy premiums paid over time, Hybrid Plans are generally purchased with a one-time lump sum. The single premium could come from an appreciated annuity or life insurance policy. This is done with a tax free transfer

Q& A
What is a 3D mammogram? Is it right for me? are digital: they are stored on a computer as they’re obtained and available for the radiologist to read almost immediately.
Q:
Is a 3D mammogram better than the traditional kind? Who should have one? And who decides? Dr. Renee Quarterman of Susquehanna Health’s Kathryn Candor Lundy Breast Health Center answers common questions about 3D mammograms.
Q:
What is a 3D mammogram?
A 3D mammogram is slang for breast tomosynthesis. It’s a recent advancement in breast examination technology which provides a clearer, more accurate view of dense breast material and allows doctors to pinpoint the size, shape and location of abnormalities more effectively.
Q:
Does this make the traditional mammogram obsolete?
The traditional 2D mammogram is not going away. It is still the standard test for the majority of women who get screening mammograms (only 10% of women in the United States have extremely dense breast tissue).
Q:
How long does it take to get results?
As with the traditional mammogram, images
Is a 3D mammogram taken the same way as a traditional mammogram?
A 3D mammogram is performed in the same manner as a traditional mammogram. The equipment and exam room look exactly the same, and just as with a traditional mammogram, the patient stands very still as the breast is compressed. The difference is that the camera rotates around the breast to capture a number of digital images at different angles as the breast is scanned. The results are compiled in a 3D image that the radiologist can look through by slice to detect any abnormalities.
Q:
When should a 3D mammogram be used?
There are no official recommendations about when to use the 3D mammogram. It is simply another imaging tool, along with ultrasound, MRI and traditional mammography, that can be used to assess your breast health. 3D mammography is very effective in finding abnormalities in dense breast tissue. Spotting cancer in dense breast tissue is more challenging with a 2D mammogram because the dense tissue may obscure the cancer. Sometimes, using 2D mammograms to look for cancer in dense breasts is like looking for an igloo in a snowstorm.
Q:
of fibrous or glandular tissue but not much fat. Breast density is often easily appreciated on physical examination. The younger the woman is, the more dense her breast tissue is likely to be. The radiologist who reads your mammogram assigns it to one of four categories: almost entirely fatty, scattered areas of fibroglandular density, heterogeneously dense or extremely dense. The majority of women in the United States fall into the middle categories with just 10% having extremely dense breasts.
Q:
Can I request a 3D mammogram?
You can talk to your primary care provider about your family history or other risk factors for breast cancer to get a recommendation. Your radiologist ultimately determines the most appropriate imaging for you based on your breast density, any recent suspicious findings or biopsies, and family history. If your radiologist has already determined that you have dense breasts, and you have had 3D mammograms in the past, chances are you will continue to have them until you reach menopause when breasts tend to become less dense.
Q:
Is a 3D mammogram covered by insurance?
Cost of the 3D mammogram is a consideration. It’s best to check with your insurance company about coverage before you have the exam to see if there will be a co-pay or out of pocket cost.
What is breast density?
Not all breasts are the same. Breasts are considered dense if there is a lot

Lock Haven Lock Haven is the county seat of Clinton County. Located near the confluence of the West Branch Susquehanna River and Bald Eagle Creek, the site was favored by pre-European settlements. The town was established in 1833 as a timber town and haven for river travelers on the river and West Branch Canal. In the 20th century, a light-aircraft factory, a college, and a paper mill, along with many smaller enterprises, drove the economy. At the 2010 census, Lock Haven’s population was 9,772. The city has three sites on the National Register of Historic Places: Memorial Park Site, a significant pre-European archaeological find; Heisey House, a Victorian-era museum; and Water Street District, an area with a mix of 19th- and 20thcentury architecture. The Memorial Park Site is an archaeological site located near the confluence of Bald Eagle Creek and the West Branch Susquehanna River. Research projects conducted at the site since 1979 have found prehistoric cultural deposits that collectively span 8,000 years. The stratified deposits represent every major prehistoric period from the Middle Archaic to the Late Woodland. The site’s dominant component holds the remains of an early Late Woodland (500–1000 CE) village inhabited by people of the Clemson Island culture. The two waterways and their valleys made the site readily accessible to pre-Columbian people. The waterways are still a draw today. INSURANCE:
To Have or Not to Have? By Nicole Carnicella DMD, MAGD
usage reports from various school districts, counties, cities, etc, the employer on average paid the dental insurance company 10-20% more in premium payments than they would have if they had just paid the dentists directly, AND THE EMPLOYEES WOULD GO FOR FREE!!!
For some reason, everyone feels safer and more secure when they have insurance. In most cases.... this is a natural, justified feeling to have.
I have become highly educated on insurance matters over the last year, and I want to work with individuals, employers, HR directors, etc to share this education and to make dental care affordable to all employees and their families. If you yourself are interested in coming in for a free private insurance consultation please call our office. Otherwise, please share this article with your employer or HR director, and myself or one of my highly trained insurance specialists would be happy to have a meeting with your office. We will also be hosting an insurance forum mid November, so please follow us on FB, Carnicella and Associates, for more information on this informative seminar date. AND PLEASE, do not let any of your HR departments sign any insurance contracts with any dental insurance companies without talking with our office first! Stop paying dental insurance companies ridiculous premiums for nothing while your oral health suffers. You deserve to have a healthy beautiful mouth, and it should be affordable to achieve!
•If your house burns down, your home owner’s insurance replaces it; • If you wreck your car, your car insurance replaces it; • If you need a new heart, your health insurance replaces it. However, if you need new teeth your dental insurance says too bad we don’t cover new teeth. Dental insurance covers dentures which are NOT new teeth. Dentures are plastic replicas of teeth that do not function at all like natural teeth. Dentures are plastic replicas that cannot tear bread, cannot grind meat, cannot stay put in your mouth when you smile, laugh, or sneeze. So you and/ or your HR director have paid for this insurance that is suppose to make you feel safe, secure, and return your mouth as close to new or as close to original as possible. Yet with their policy restrictions, limitations, and pre-exsiting clauses, not to mention the $1000.00 they give you annually (which has been the same amount dental insurance companies have given enrollers since 1950,) no patient can come close to restoring their mouth as naturally as possible. Dentists could restore a patient’s mouth in 1950 for $1000.00 a year when bread was $0.10, the minimum wage was $0.75 an hour and the average cost of a lab bill on a crown was $5.00. These numbers and costs have inflated anywhere for 10 to 100 times in the last 50 years, meaning an employee should have at least $10,000.00 in dental insurance a year to work with.....yet it still remains $1000.00.
We’ll Change Your Mind About Dentistry 814-355-5254 Carnicella & Associates offers a full array of dental services to help you maintain your health.
Insurance companies at this point are not really suppling employers with insurance or “coverage” in the true sense of the word; they are simply paying your dental bills for you, the ones they agree to pay (not what you may actually need.) Most importantly, they are paying themsleves handsomly to be your bill payer. Employers, employees, ANYONE, would be better off paying the dentist directly, and not paying Delta Dental, or United Concordia to pay the denitst for you.

A Small Brow Improvement Can Restore the Confidence in Your Appearance Beauty
In about one or two hours, Lorie Litzinger of Bellefonte can help you bring back a more youthful appearance by filling-in and restoring your eyebrows that may be thinning, unshapely, too light or simply.. gone. Eyebrow loss is common, but it doesn’t have to be frustrating. Permanent makeup is, and has been, a solution for decades. While many people neglect their brows or give them very little thought, others call them the frame of their face and find them of most importance. This season while the summer excitement starts to wind down…..Fall would be a good time for a brow cleanup. Would you like to know how you’d look with nicely shaped and filled-in eyebrows? It’s simple. Call or email today for your personal and complimentary consultation. Every face and personality is unique. Careful planning and personal attention are essential to achieve a comfortable and pleasing new browlook. Check out my website to see combo packaging for brows, eyeliner and lip color. www.secretsbylorie.com

If your daily makeup routine is getting old or getting difficult, if you find yourself checking your makeup throughout the day, the solution could be permanent cosmetics. It’s common, it’s safe and looks much better than an eyebrow or eyeliner pencil. It’s not just for the stars anymore. It’s affordable. Professionally applied permanent eyeliner, eyebrows, or lip color costs between $300 and $600, and will last for years. A refresh in a few years will keep your makeup crisp and looking good for even more years. It’s a small price to pay for something so lasting and convenient to your everyday life. 6 Things Every Kid’s Closet Needs
Jeff Ulmer, Owner
1. Two (or three) levels of hanging rods. Kids are lucky enough to be shorter than adults. This makes it possible for them to utilize their space more efficiently! Instead of one row of hanging rods, like most adult closets, break up hanging rows of clothes into two or three. 2. Hamper. This makes it easy for a child to keep dirty clothes organized! Make a game of it from the start, and it can become part of their routine. 3. Wall hooks. These help utilize the extra wall space not covered by rods and shelving. Plus, it’s great book/

gym bag storage. 4. Junk drawer. Ok, not junk, but a drawer for pencils, erasers and miscellaneous school supplies is a must-have for every school-aged kid. 5. A designated spot for shoes. Pullout shelves or shoe cubbies make storing children’s shoes easy. 6. Drawers. Drawers are much easier to keep organized than Shelves. When you provide a space for everything kids are like adults and they will be more apt to put things back in their proper place. Closets Plus will meet with you to discuss how we can optimize your kids closets and help your Spring Cleaning to be a success this year! There is not charge or obligation for us to meet with you and come up with a design for your closets. We take the measurements, discuss options, and email you the design and estimate.

Seasons of Change There is a saying that “the only thing that is constant is change.” As the seasons begin their annual shift into autumn there are a lot of changes going on in the real estate world. The most immediate changes are in regards to the Real Estate Settlement Procedure Act, commonly referred to as RESPA. This is a consumer protection statute passed in 1974 that periodically is adjusted to meet changing needs. Changes were made to the manner in which the documentation associated with the purchase of homes using a mortgage are done. These changes are intended to make it easier for consumers to understand how and where every penny goes, as well as resetting the timetables associated with collection of necessary information to give all parties adequate time to review. Changes have been gradually introduced this year that are more about format and procedure. The credit checking and verification that was done throughout the application process for mortgages still occurs but earlier in the process. This is good as it reduces the chances of consumers getting deeply involved with the purchase of a new home only to find that they are not able to get the financing they need. You will also reduce those last minute scrambles
for documentation while trying to make a significant move. Aspects of these changes have already begun to happen and the feedback generally has been good. Settlement statements, historically referred to as the HUD-1 statement, now are being presented in a format that is less confusing than the old as well as being given to consumers sooner to allow more time for reviewing and correcting. Please continue to follow a series of articles here over the next few months as there are too many changes happening to cover them all now. I will discuss how consumer information about real estate is evolving due to advances in technology. There are pros and cons to these changes, but it has increasingly become important for you as a consumer to be knowledgeable and proactive in the entire process. One thing that has not changed is the importance of using a using a licensed local Realtor. In many ways that has increased. I highly recommend that any consumer take the time to meet the professionals working for them in person to better judge if they are the right one for you.

Pre-school Educator Loves those Formative Years
STATE COLLEGE – Beth Dougherty has been director of the Our Lady of Victory Preschool since its inception in 1994. Her vision when she opened the school was to provide a secure environment in which all children could build a strong foundation of early development - one that recognized the uniqueness of each child and inspired their desire to learn and grow. Beth earned her degree in Home Economics Education for grades K-12 with a certification in Early Childhood Education. “I did my practicum in Early Childhood Education and realized I absolutely love that age group.” She worked as a preschool and kindergarten teacher, later, as the preschool director at Grace Lutheran School. In addition to her directorship of OLV Preschool, she serves as a school evaluator for the Middle States Commission Early Learning Accreditation Team Committee, and was an active member of Smart Start Centre County’s Early Learning Committee and the Transition to Kindergarten subcommittee. “I love giving these children their start – academically, socially, and spiritually. I feel blessed to work with this age group.”
Chancellor/Dean Achieved Her Dream – and So Much More
ALTOONA – For more than 30 years, Dr. Lori J. Bechtel-Wherry has been a member of the Penn State Altoona family. She is a professor of bio-behavioral health and women’s studies and a member of the University’s graduate faculty. In 2005, Dr. Bechtel-Wherry was appointed as Penn State Altoona’s Chancellor and Dean, the first woman to hold the position in the college’s history. In 1997, the Penn State Altoona Campus became Penn State Altoona, a four-year baccalaureate degree-granting college of the University. As a senior member of the college’s faculty, Dr. Bechtel-Wherry played a significant role in that transition and has continued to lead the college in its ongoing success. Her leadership and influence extend beyond the University as an active member of the Blair County community, working with numerous charitable, non-profit, and economic development organizations. “I love my job,” Lori said, “serving the students, the community, and economic development. I knew in fifth grade I wanted to be a professor, since I heard that women couldn’t be astronauts.” She and husband Tim Wherry live in Martinsburg.
Special Education Educator Thrives at Charter School
STATE COLLEGE – Deborah Maddock-Swartz has taught at Centre Learning Community Charter School in State College for 13 years. She had extensive experience in teaching severely developmentally disabled children. “It is the most amazing experience of my career,” she said. “I was hired as the 6/7 regular education teacher, where I spent two years, then I moved to the Special Education realm.” CLC is a small, nurturing environment that emphasizes learning by doing. “This is amazing for our special education population,” Deb said. “My job at CLC is probably much different than other special educators…most of my time is spent finding the avenues for my students to demonstrate progress, increase confidence and produce quality work designed around real-world situations. Kids don’t see me as “special ed teacher” which makes the interactions stronger because they are not being pointed out as different. I familiarize myself with the latest technology/strategies available to open each student’s eyes to the world around them. For me, seeing the sparks of interest and confidence and the interaction they have with other students is what keeps me here!”
Assistant Professor of Accounting Wins Award
HUNTINGDON – Kathy Baughman was one of three Juniata College faculty members honored with distinguished teaching and service awards this year. Kathy, a resident of Port Matilda, joined the Juniata faculty in 2009 as an assistant professor of accounting. She teaches introduction to business, financial accounting, and auditing. From 1991 to 2009, Kathy was employed at a number of large businesses as auditor, senior accountant, and financial analyst. Though she loves the field, she loved educating even more. “When I worked in business, what I liked most was mentoring new associates and helping them develop in their professional lives,” she said. “I love what I’m doing at Juniata College because I get to work with students every day – teaching and showing them what the job looks like in real life. I haven’t regretted this change for a moment.” She is also an active volunteer in her community, specializing in organizing fundraising events for local nonprofit agencies, and has been a Girl Scout troop leader and a piano teacher. U R O W Y O R R O L L D O . . . with peace and self-confidence! C Take time out for YOU – create, play, color and relax freely with other women. Thursday OCTOBER 8
th
from 6-8pm Fill in a fanciful mosaic with all the colors of the rainbow – while learning how to deal with life’s stresses. Relax, color, and listen as Coach Joanie Yanusus shares techniques for taming challenging relationships and situations – so that you remain in comfortable control of your life. In simplest terms, coloring has a de-stressing effect. While we focus on shades and shapes, we release our worries. It also brings out our imagination and takes us back to a carefree childhood. Pychologist Carl Jung used coloring as a relaxation technique in the early 20th century. He did this through mandalas: circular designs with concentric shapes similar to Gothic church windows. Coach Joanie is a certified life and relationship coach, with advice about how to live a life of selfdiscovery and self-care – how to face life’s challenges with unruffled self-confidence. Come and refocus your own beautiful contributions to life. Light refreshments, bring your own drinks. RSVP Limited seating - $25 per person email coachjoanie@hotmail.com or call her at 814.777-0410

Hair
Bowing Out Friday evening I will color, cut, and style my very last client’s hair, culminating 41 years as a professional hair designer. Nothing sad about it, I had a great time. And as most great times do, it wore me out. Neck, back and shoulders are feeling the strain. But every ending is a new beginning! With nine kids at home (ages 7 - 20), this is not a retirement announcement. This is a new beginning announcement! I’ve been blessed in so many ways. Beyond my wonderful wife and kids, a year and a half ago I took on an additional small business as many small business owners do. Not putting all your eggs in one basket and all that. Well, it’s proving to be a great blessing. My new business requires only the physical exertion of opening my computer. Further, it plays off the knowledge and skills I developed as a hair designer and salon owner though the course of my career. I have a whole new group of professional friends. And I have the same daily excitement I experienced 41 years ago when I began my career as a designer. I’ll also be able to get to more of my kids’ school and sports events. Life seems to throw you just what you need when you need it if you’ll just take the step. When I first opened my present salon my wife showed me The Women’s Journal and said “You should
try writing some articles.” That was seven years ago and I can tell you that TWJ has been the most successful and most cost effective marketing I ever used. A year and a half ago I told my wife about the new business offering I had been presented with. She said “Sounds like you. Give it a try.” At the end of one career path and the beginning of another I want to say to you: when life presents you with new offerings that sound right “Give it a try.” You know where you’ll end up if you don’t. But there’s no telling where you’ll end up if you do. I wish you all long life and happiness. Thank you.

Grandparent Custody Rights Grandparents enjoy special rights when it comes to visitation and physical custody of their grandchildren. Before filing for either type of custody/visitation, grandparents must first establish standing. Pennsylvania is among the states offering protection from lawsuits to intact families. In other words, if mom and dad are still together, grandparents cannot file for custody. Grandparents may file for visitation only in specific circumstances: if the parent who is their child has died; if the parents are divorced; or if the parents have filed for divorce or have been separated for six months or more. In these circumstances, the court is instructed to consider the amount of personal contact that took place before the application. In an additional scenario, if the child resided with the grandparent for twelve months or more and was removed from the grandparent’s home by parents, the court may award partial physical custody or supervised physical custody, but suit must be filed within six months after the removal. In all the situations listed above, the court must consider whether visitation is in the child’s best interest and whether visitation with grandparents would interfere with the parent-child relationship. Greatgrandparents have the same rights as grandparents, and adoption terminates visitation rights unless the adopting party is a stepparent, grandparent or great-grandparent.
If you are an aunt or an uncle of a child, you do not enjoy the same standing as grandparents. If you are the aunt or an uncle of a child, obtaining standing can only occur if you are in loco parentis to the child. In other words, you must prove you were, in effect, the parent of a child without going through the legal formality of an adoption. If you have any questions regarding child custody, please feel free to contact The Law Offices of Lance T. Marshall at (814) 308-8439 or e-mail me at ltm@ statecollegefamilylawyer.com.

Altoona Chorus of Sweet Adelines The Altoona Chorus is an award winning female singing group dedicated to promoting barbershop music. The group includes approximately 30 singers of all ages, from various walks of life, throughout central Pennsylvania. The Altoona Chorus is a member of Sweet Adelines International, a nonprofit organization of 30,000 ladies singing in choruses and quartets worldwide. The Chorus sings at annual shows, community events, nursing homes, hospitals, malls, festivals and private engagements. Every year, they compete with choruses from a 5 state area. They have won several regional championships, and have also competed on the International stage as well. Ladies, young or old, are invited to join us. The Chorus rehearses Tuesday evenings, 7pm, at Jaggard Street United Methodist Church, 1801 Pleasant Valley Boulevard, Altoona, PA. Whether you’re just someone who sings in the shower or an accomplished musician, there’s a spot for you. It is not necessary that you read music. The Chorus provides educational September October 2015
opportunities and helps ladies sing better. Women have joined the Altoona Chorus and found a family with other “Sweeties”. Many form lifetime friendships. (And we have a lot of fun!). Come to a rehearsal and check us out. For more information, go to www.altoona.chorus.com, or call Betty at 814-729-7095. The Altoona Chorus will be presenting their annual show at the Altoona Area Jr. High School Auditorium, 7:30pm, on November 7, 2015. Tickets are $12 for adults; $8 for students. Tickets can be obtained from any chorus member, from Thompson’s Pharmacy, or by calling Kathy at 814-934-7484. Come join us for an evening of a cappella singing. 27

Is Your Hearing Aid Healthy? When was the last time you’ve seen your audiologist for a hearing aid check? Regular visits are important to maintain the effectiveness of your hearing aid. Hearing aids can and do malfunction and your hearing can and will change over time. It is recommended that you visit your audiologist every three to six months to have your hearing aid professionally cleaned and checked. The hearing aid should also be cleaned and checked at home every day. The most common reasons for a hearing aid to malfunction are moisture and ear wax build up. Ear wax build-up can clog your hearing aid and decrease the volume or block the sound completely. Moisture damage can come from sweating, muggy weather, rain, the swimming pool, or just by leaving your hearing aid on the bathroom sink when you shower. Your brain can adapt to changes in your hearing, so you might not always notice when your hearing ability is declining. Routine check-ups are essential to ensuring your hearing aid’s peak performance. Here are a few daily care tips: • Perform listening checks: contact your audiologist if the aid doesn’t sound quite right. • Check batteries: batteries typically last one week. • Clean the hearing aid regularly with a dry cloth, brush or pipe cleaner given to you by the audiologist • Keep your hearing aid in a drying container: this prolongs the hearing aid’s life by removing moisture from building up. • Avoid feedback: if this occurs frequently, it could mean your hearing aid is improperly fitted or there is a build-up of earwax in your ear.

Jezebel’s Boutique: Helping Women “Fall” in Love with Their Bras! Are you always fiddling with your straps? Do you get a backache in the afternoon? Do your cups floweth over? Then you’re among the four out of five women wearing the wrong bra!
NEW LOCATION IN STATEWe’ve COLLEGE moved to 35 355 Colonnade Boulevard(Behind Wegman’s Café,
This fall, as the leaves begin to turn and everyone is cheering for their favorite football team, Jezebel’s Boutique is asking you to take a long, hard look at what’s lurking in your underwear drawers. Aside from being the perfect excuse to treat yourself to some new lingerie, you should also be asking whether your bra is damaging your health.
(behind Wegman's Cafe next to Daniel Vaughn Designs)
While prettiness counts, the perfect fit should be at the forefront of your mind. Wearing an ill-fitting bra can lead to health problems including headaches, stomach upsets and back and shoulder issues. It also exposes you to the risk of irreversible damage to your breast ligaments, which can not only cause pain, but can also lead to sagging. One of the biggest no-no’s is wearing a bra that doesn’t give you enough support!
Largest Selection of Bras in the Area!
So…what can you do? Let us make bra shopping fun for you! Coming to Jezebel’s Boutique will change the way you look at shopping for bras. For a lot of women it’s a daunting task. At our store you will find professional fitters who love what they do! You will receive unsurpassed customer service. Walk into a shop that feels like your dream closet, cozy & comfortable. You will then get a free professional bra-fitting. We will talk to you about what you need as far as style, color, comfort, etc. and then bring you a bra you will love. No need to dig through drawers and racks yourself and get bras that you end up throwing out!

You may ask, “Why is a personal bra fitting so important?” Since there is no one “correct size”, as all bras fit differently, we are trained to know what styles work best for your body type. Personal bra fitting is our primary focus. In the fast and convenient age of internet shopping, it is our philosophy that an individual bra fitting session with a real person (not a computer) is the most favorable way of finding a quality, properly fitting bra. Though many websites offer bra size calculators, there is no substitute for a professional bra fitting from a full-service boutique like Jezebel’s that offer the largest selection of bras in Central Pa!
