ADULTS 55+ MONTHLY OUTLOOK
SUMMER MISSIONS 2024: UNTIL THE WHOLE WORLD KNOWS
Rev. Karen Tyler, Pastor of Missions
Another summer is upon us, and in the world of missions, that means it is a busy season! Planning our mission trips this year has been more challenging compared to years past. Several of the places we love to visit are in significant seasons of political turmoil — some are even under the threat of violent outbreaks. Please join me in praying for peace throughout the world.
With that said, we are excited to be safely sending a Living Water team to Mexico to provide clean, potable water to a village near Oaxaca while sharing the gift of Jesus, our Living Water. Our own Jim Seamans is returning to lead this team. Ron Ryan is leading a group that will partner with Hope for Honduras, where they will share the love of Christ, build a home and provide food for an impoverished community. And rounding out our summer trips, I am honored to be leading a great group of people to a village near Tegucigalpa, Honduras, to provide basic medical care to those who are hurting.
In the fall, we are sending a group to Tanzania to encourage some of the orphans we are empowering through our partnership with ZOE Empowers. And finally, our Quest Men will be returning to Honduras for their second trip this year to build a church and spread the gospel as God provides opportunity.
It has been such a pleasure to serve as the Pastor of Missions over the last two years, and I look forward to continuing to be involved as time permits when I move into the new role God has called me to at TWMC. As you have likely heard, I will be taking on the role of Pastor of Worship and Evangelism, which is a new role that has been created (although many different people have stewarded different aspects of the position over the years). In this role I will work with our pastors; music and worship staff and volunteers; and connections staff and volunteers. I will provide support for Missions if requested.
In July, the Rev. Dr. Ashley Goad will join us as the new Pastor of Missions. She is coming to us from First Methodist Shreveport where she has stewarded their missions initiatives for the last decade. Her love for all things missions and all things Jesus is contagious, and I know you will join me in praying for her and welcoming her when she arrives on July 1.
God is doing so many amazing things at TWMC through the Missions Ministry. In large part, your generosity of time, talents and finances makes this possible. Thank you for supporting missions. Let’s keep working together until the whole world knows!
A SUMMER HARVEST
by Rev. Chris McLain, Pastor of Caring and Adults 55+ Ministry
Twelve years ago, on a Tuesday probably, I started praying for a spiritual gift.
I was discerning that God wanted me to serve the church, not by being the greatest theologian, lost in the clouds of thought, and not as a renegade missionary going across the world seeking another bus to go everdeeper into the jungle telling the story of Jesus. He seemed to want me to be one who is constantly sharing perspective, comparing the earthly world next to the heavenly kingdom. So, I started praying for wisdom.
Last year the Texas summer heat could be summed up in one word: oppressive.
As someone who loves to actively be outdoors, last year I found myself, more than once, electing to remain inside in the AC. Last summer you could find my son and me playing video games instead of fishing, setting up board games instead of hitting the ATV trails, and even heading to the movies instead of going swimming. Because of my desire to be comfortable, I failed to spend time stewarding that father-son relationship with unique experiences only we could share.
Proverbs 10:5 (NLT) reminds us: A wise youth harvests in the summer, but one who sleeps during harvest is a disgrace.
Of course, this proverb is really about diligence. It’s about reaping that which the Holy Spirit has sown. So, is there a family member who needs to be told/reminded how you have been praying for them? Get to work! There is a harvest ahead this summer!
