Two senior couples find ways to give back to the church through The Woodlands UMC Foundation.

FUNDING A CHURCH FOR THE FUTURE PAGE 2

TODAY’S GIFT... TOMORROW’S SERVICE TO HIM Fifteen years ago, we had a dream to build a Foundation to support the life-changing ministries and facilities of The Woodlands United Methodist Church. You are responding with an outpouring of gifts that will help us to reach others with the love of Christ long after we are gone. Thirty-eight years ago, St. Luke’s UMC Foundation in Houston dared to imagine what we could become and gave us a seedplanting gift of $75,000. The faithful members who supported the St. Luke’s Foundation for decades before had no idea their gifts would

BUILDING A FIRM FOUNDATION FOR THE FUTURE By Nathan Nix SALLY & GEORGE

HOLTIN

2

George and Sally Holtin first visited The Woodlands UMC in 1994 with their son and daughter-in-law, who were already members. Since that Sunday over 20 years ago, they have become pillars of the church community, participating in the Goldenaires Choir, the Chancel Choir, and helping to lead Prime Timers with their friends Ken and Joyce Nesmith. “I’ve been a Methodist all my life,” says Sally. “I felt this church, more than any church we’ve ever belonged to, was stronger in supporting the missions of the Church, which I think is a very important thing.” Ken and Joyce, who moved from the FM 1960 area to be closer to their children and grandchildren, echo their friend’s appreciation of the church. “We immediately fell in love with (the church),” says Ken, pointing out in particular the quality of the music, sermons and missions. As they’ve witnessed the church grow over the years, both couples recognized that the only way the church could continue to serve its thriving congregation with programs ranging from a fantastic Children’s Ministry to their beloved Senior’s Ministry was through support above and beyond regular tithing. For a long time, that outlet wasn’t available. In 2000, The Woodlands UMC Foundation was established at the suggestion of current Executive Director Sally Bacon. “I said, ‘Ed, there are so many people who want to give, and they just need a vehicle,’” Sally (Bacon) says, recounting the conversation with Dr. Robb that led to The Foundation’s creation. She had just helped the Houston Junior Forum raise a significant amount of money, and she saw no reason the church couldn’t do something similar considering how much bigger it was. “Once you become an organization that’s been around a while, you have to start planning long-term and not just trying to get past the immediate things,” she says, pointing to the example many universities have set with their alumni fundraising as a model of success. “I just felt like it was something that the church needed for future growth.” The Foundation provided just the sort of opportunity the Holtins and Nesmiths

NESMITH

were looking for — one that allowed them to invest in the ministry of the church both here and now and for years to come. “We take every opportunity … to honor someone, in memory of and so forth,” says George. “That’s our avenue — through The Foundation. It’s an opportunity for us to see that the work of this church is carried on into future generations — not just seniors, but people of all ages in our community. It has a great mission and a great outreach that is very successful.” Sally (Holtin) cites the strong leadership of the church and its history as assurances they are making a sound investment. “I felt sure this would be a good Foundation for this church because the church has great leadership. The money won’t float away. The church will, I feel, no doubt, keep going with the help of God. We have grandchildren that belong to this church and great-grandchildren that belong to this church, and we want it to keep going and all the ministries to keep going for them to be able to participate in.” Both couples have also signed up to become Legacy Leaders, which means they will leave a portion of their estate to the church in their wills. “It gives me a feeling that the work that they’re doing now will continue and I’ll be able to participate even though I’m not here,” Ken says. Sally Bacon, who has signed up with her husband to leave their own gift to the church in their will, calls it “a gift that keeps on giving.”

“Flowers fade really fast. You want to make a gift that’s not gonna be gone in one year. You want something that’s going to have staying power and live on in perpetuity.” Joyce even goes so far as to view supporting the church as “an obligation.” “That’s just the way I feel, that it is an obligation. I’ve always felt it was more blessed to give than to receive, and we all know that we should give all that we can, and a strong foundation is always the best for any building.” Sally (Holtin) also points out the example it sets for future generations. “Sometimes our children do what we want them to do and sometimes they don’t, but we keep trying. You hope to be a model for other people, in particular your own family.” So far, disbursements from The Foundation have been used to build Grace Garden Columbarium, to build The Woodlands Methodist School’s playground, to buy a security software check-in system for the church’s Children’s Ministry, and to give scholarships to students going on missions trips to Belize and with UM Army. “The Foundation is helping the church to do God’s work,” Joyce says in summary. “That’s really what it’s all about. It’s very important that this be continued in the future.” “We’re solicited a lot for different things,” George adds, “and I just feel more strongly about this than I do anything else.” • 3

STEPPING UP TO FUND CHRISTIAN EDUCATION By Nathan Nix “That really was such a wonderful surprise,” says Sally. “You don’t often get young people interested in doing something big. Laurie Shults reached out to us and asked if we could help put something together. I started calling people and found other donors for us to come up with the minimum amount.” Since tuition at an elementary school like TWMS is much more than at a part-day school like Children of The Woodlands (COTW), Linda says the scholarship endowment fund for students is greatly appreciated. It wasn’t until The Woodlands UMC moved to its current location that the idea of a full elementary school was seriously considered, even though the church had successfully offered kindergarten classes for over a decade. After years of parents asking for a first grade option, Dr. Robb gave Linda Wilmoth, Executive Director of Child Development, permission to give it a try. “I prayed, ‘God, bring me 12 students,’” says Linda. “If I had 12 people sign up, it would be enough for a class that will more than break even financially. I got 20, so I had to do two classes. I thought, ‘Ok, I guess this is really supposed to happen.’” The Woodlands Methodist School (TWMS) has added a grade level each year as the initial 2011 class of first graders advanced. It now serves up through 5th grade and will add 6th grade next year. Upon seeing the wonderful effects a Christian education had on their own children, some TWMS parents decided to establish a scholarship endowment fund for children who couldn’t afford to attend the school. When they approached Linda to learn how to bring the scholarship into existence, she directed them to Sally Bacon and The Woodlands UMC Foundation.

4

“It has been a huge blessing to the school and to the church — and not just a financial blessing, but one that carries some weight and power in saying we have intention to stay. When you say ‘endowment fund,’ to me there’s longevity built into it. It kind of affirmed the school was going to make it and move forward and grow.” Once enough interest on the principal had accrued and the first scholarship was ready to be given out, Linda took her recommendation to the school’s scholarship committee. “The schools together have a board, and that board has a scholarship committee that’s within the board,” explains Linda. “They make the other scholarship committee decisions, but we consider these endowment scholarship funds above and beyond what has already been set aside.” The first scholarship was awarded to a little boy being raised by his grandmother, a member of TWUMC who has officially adopted him. “He has some learning issues, so our nurturing environment is perfect for him,” says Linda. “He’s doing well here. He gets lots of extra love and attention because of our small groups.” Stories like his are exactly why Laurie and her husband, Justin, were so passionate about helping start the scholarship endowment fund. They’d

witnessed their own children benefit from the school’s low student-toteacher ratio and faith-based approach and knew there was surely a family somewhere who needed this sort of education but couldn’t afford it. They couldn’t start the fund alone though. Recruiting others was key to getting it off the ground, and it remains important as it grows. “Hopefully it will have a snowball effect and get other people involved,” says Justin. “We can enlarge the foundation where it will provide for much more and go on indefinitely.” The Shultses see the fund as much more than a charitable donation — to them, it’s an investment in the Kingdom of God. “It just fulfills one of those key pillars of the church where you’re reaching out to people and you reach out through the school,” says Justin. “I think it’s felt through the family and then through the generations. It just has a lasting effect.” Linda echoes Justin’s statement about the fund’s impact. “With generous gifts to the endowment fund and to our general growth fund, the sky is the limit for what we can do at The Woodlands Methodist School.” For those interested in making their own investment into the life of the church, The Shultses encourage them to seek out conversations with church and school leadership about how you can help meet needs. “I think everyone has something tugging at their heart,” says Laurie. “Even if the idea isn’t completely clear, clarity will come through starting to have those conversations and prayer. I’m sure of that.” •

“The sky is the limit for what we can do at The Woodlands Methodist School.” 5

A FOUNDATION OVERVIEW By Sally Bacon

Grace Garden In 2001, the Foundation’s first chairman, Earl Johnson, had an idea to bring a columbarium to our church campus. Earl is a man who gets things done, and it wasn’t long before Grace Garden columbarium was a reality. Built and maintained by the Foundation, Grace Garden is a place of reverence and remembrance, offering members and their families a final resting place at their beloved church home. Built around a bubbling brook, the lush garden setting beckons butterflies and songbirds and invites quiet time spent with the Lord in prayer. But it is also a place full of life and joy as families and brides often have their portraits taken on the footbridge surrounded by God’s beautiful creation. For more information about Grace Garden, please contact Dana Spencer at dspencer@twumc.org. Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. 6

HOW YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE By Sally Bacon

The Woodlands United Methodist Church Foundation provides for the future of this congregation as we work to fulfill the Great Commission. By providing support for our church now and into the future, we can focus on bringing Christ’s love to those across the street and across the globe. Named Endowment Funds All gif ts to The Foundation are unrestricted, allowing The Foundation board greater flexibility in responding to funding needs, unless the donor requests a specific use. Gifts may be directed to: • Unrestricted General Fund • Missions Endowment Fund • Student Missions Endowment Fund • Society of St. Stephen Endowment Fund 14

• The Woodlands Methodist School Scholarship Endowment Fund Many families choose to establish a named endowment fund as a legacy or memorial gift to the church. Current endowment funds are: • The Luc William DeVeau Endowment Fund • The Lynda Whitley Frank Endowment Fund • The Elizabeth Seibert Neikirk Endowment Fund • The Patricia Ann and Jack B. Powell Endowment Fund • The Ann and Bill Stokes Endowment Fund Contributions may also be given in memory of a loved one or in honor of special occasions such as weddings

or anniversaries; birth, baptism or confirmation; a friend’s birthday; or a special thank you to a teacher. We will send the person or family a note informing them of your thoughtfulness. The Foundation accepts gifts of cash by check or credit card, securities, and real estate that meet certain criteria. If you are considering a planned or estate gift, The Foundation office will be glad to help you arrange it in a way that meets your life circumstances with the assistance of your financial advisors. For additional information about The Foundation, or if you would like to begin discussion about the advantages of including The Foundation in your estate planning, contact Sally Bacon at 281.466.8618 or sbacon@twumc.org. All inquiries remain confidential. •

AN INVITATION TO LEAVE YOUR LEGACY By Sally Bacon

A simple remembrance, as a witness of your faith, can mean so much to The Woodlands UMC when it comes in the form of a planned gift. Legacy Leaders are visionaries who think beyond their own lifespans to fulfill the mission of our church: Win people to Jesus Christ, Disciple them in faith, Help those in need. We invite you to become a Legacy Leader and leave an imprint of love that will enable The Woodlands UMC to make a difference for generations to come. For more information, contact Sally Bacon at sbacon@twumc.org or 281.466.8618.
