The theme of our June Prime Timers luncheon was “Hawaiian Luau.” As has become our annual June tradition, Dr. Mark Lewis gave a tribute to our members who are aged 90 and above, and 24 of these honored guests attended. A special treat was the involvement of high schoolers from Rebelbase Student Ministry under the leadership of Michael and Caitlin Dale. The students took photos, greeted our guests with leis, helped serve and provided the entertainment. Evin Calicchia played the ukulele and sang four songs including “Jesus Loves Me” and an original song that she wrote. Avery Gordy, Madison Heath, Kevin Lowe, and Jackson Valencia were very entertaining as hula dancers!

Every moment of every day we are thinking. You are thinking something as you read these words. And we are constantly receiving messages about what we should be thinking. The newspaper, TV, radio, family and friends and co-workers constantly give us things to think about. And so much of what we hear pushes us toward negative thoughts. We live in a day of partisan divisions and political infighting, mistrust, suspicion, criticism and even hatred on every level. It is so easy to slide into a pattern of negative thinking. Years ago Dr. Norman Vincent Peale wrote a best seller entitled The Power of Positive Thinking. But he wasn’t the first positive thinker. That honor has to go to the Apostle Paul. As he ends his letter to the Philippians he gives advice, which if followed, has the power to transform our lives. He writes in Chapter 4:8, “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” So let us examine our thoughts. And let us begin to follow the admonition of St. Paul to think of things that are true, noble, right, pure and lovely, and things that are excellent and praiseworthy. It can transform our lives and even cause us to feel better and have a better outlook on life. And, as Paul says, “The peace of God will be with you.” Your friend,


TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALL GAME

On Wednesday, June 14, 55 members of the Senior Adult Ministry enjoyed hot dogs and cheered on the Astros for a 13-2 win over the Texas Rangers at Minute Maid Park. We were delighted to have two couples from Woodforest join us. We look forward to doing this again next year.

Prime Timers Luncheon Speaker | Wednesday, August 2

Air Force Colonel (retired) Jerry L. Ross grew up in Crown Point, Indiana. He was a member of the Astronaut Corps from before the first Space Shuttle launch in April 1981, until after the last landing in July 2011. He also supported the International Space Station Program from its inception through completion of assembly in 2011. Jerry Ross set the World Record with seven space flights- STS-61B, 27, 37, 55, 74, 88, and 110. He has performed nine spacewalks totaling over 58 hours in the vacuum of space. Colonel Ross logged more than 4100 hours of flight time. He was awarded two Defense Superior Service Medals, the Air Force Legion of Merit, four Defense Meritorious Service Medals, two Air Force Meritorious Service Medals, and the National Intelligence Medal of Achievement. He was a Distinguished Graduate of the United State Air Force Test Pilot School and the recipient of the Outstanding Flight Test Engineer Award, Class 75B. Ross received 15 NASA medals. He was awarded the American Astronautical Society’s Victor A. Prather Award for spacewalking achievements (1985, 1990 and 1999) and the Flight Achievement Award (1992, 1996, 1999 and 2002). Ross received an Honorary Doctor of Science degree from Purdue University in 2000 and the Distinguished Engineering Alumnus Award from Purdue University in 2004. His home town school system has named an elementary school in his honor. In May 2014, Ross was inducted into the Astronaut Hall of Fame.

He released his autobiography, “Spacewalker: My Journey in Space and Faith as NASA’s Record-Setting Frequent Flyer” in January 2013, and a children’s book, “Becoming a Spacewalker, My Journey to the Stars” in September 2014. His third book, “The Diaries of Harriett “Hattie” Dillabaugh: 1889-1940” was published in 2015. His current mission is to raise children’s awareness of the careers available in science, technology, engineering, and math, and to encourage children to strive to do their best with their unique sets of God-given interests and talents.

GOLDENAIRES CHOIR Not meeting during the summer. The Goldenaires, our senior adult choir, is the perfect way for you to spread joy through singing. This group is open to those 55 and older and is directed by Stephen Jones, The Woodlands UMC’s Music Associate and Organist. No audition is required. We would love to have you join us this fall! SENIOR FITNESS Tuesdays and Fridays | 8:30 – 9:20 a.m. in Aldersgate Hall Join us up to twice a week for a muscle toning workout for men and women featuring strength training and some stretching using hand weights, tubes and chairs. Lite body sculpting is an unintimidating, less strenuous class with modifications for any fitness level. Segments include warm-up, strength, stretching and cool-down. There is no charge.
