FEBRUARY 2017 EDITION

THE WOODLANDS UMC

POINT A MESSAGE FROM

DON MEADOR PASTOR TO SENIOR ADULTS

“Will you grow?” That is the question our church has been asking us as we begin a new year of ministry and service. It is important that we senior adults answer in the affirmative. No matter where we may be on our “life journey,” we can continue to grow. We all need to think about how we can grow physically, mentally, spiritually, and socially.

2017 SENIOR ADULT FITNESS KICK-OFF Over forty senior adults attended the Senior Fitness Kickoff on January 10 in Aldersgate Hall. Sandra Huskey, The Woodlands UMC Fitness Director, spoke about fitness and health. Attendees received new fitness t-shirts, water cups and door prizes. It’s not too late to join this group which meets on Tuesday and Friday mornings at 8:30 a.m. The new blue fitness t-shirts are still available!

Recently, we were so pleased to welcome over 40 eager seniors to the kick-off of a new year in our fitness program for seniors. Although some are age 90 and above, this group evidenced a desire to “be as fit as possible.” Sandra Huskey, our church fitness director, led the group in understanding the importance of being healthy and fit so we can live life to its fullest potential. I hope you will read her article and consider joining the fitness group, which meets every Tuesday and Friday mornings at 8:30 a.m. in Aldersgate Hall. And I hope you have already answered with a “yes” to the question, “Will you grow?” Your friend,

TIPS FOR STAYING FIT IN 2017 By Sandra Huskey, Fitness Director at The Woodlands UMC “Dear Friend, I hope all is well with you and that you are as healthy in body as you are strong in spirit” This greeting is actually a verse directly from the Bible. It was written by the apostle John, in 3 John1:2. What a beautiful sentiment of combining spiritual mind and healthy body! God sees us as whole human beings. The Bible directs us to be healthy to fulfill God’s calling in our lives. Our bodies are gifts from God so it’s important to take time to care for them. When we are healthy and fit, we are better able to live life to it’s full potential. The most important thing we can do is some sort of physical fitness or movement everyday! Physical exercise is not just great for the body, but is also amazingly good for the brain. What is good for the heart is good for the mind. Since it takes efforts to stay fit, it’s often easy to tell ourselves, I’m too tired, I don’t have time, or I’m too old. But you’re never too old to make your physical health your priority. Regular exercise builds strength, flexibility and stamina while also improving balance.

Sandra Huskey speaking at our 2017 Senior Adult Fitness Kick-Off event

Maybe you’re not a new year’s resolution kind of person, but did you know that setting attainable and measurable goals will help you stick with a plan? Physical fitness goals could range from generally trying to stay active to viewing fitness as a lifestyle. Whatever you decide to do, have a consistent approach. Schedule your fitness. Recruit your pet, significant other, friend, neighbor or family member to go on regular walks with you or invite a friend to join you for a fitness class. You are invited to attend Senior Fitness class here at the church every Tuesday and Friday morning, it’s free! Remember that you “Get To” workout! Treat your workout, walk or fitness class as a gift. When creating your fitness goal, set out to accomplish something that you’re not already successful at! Try an activity you’ve been wanting to try, however don’t continue to do activities that you don’t enjoy. Find fun in your fitness because if it’s fun you’ll want to do it again and you’ll be more likely to stick with it throughout the year! Note: Before you start any new fitness program, always get clearance from your doctor first.
