MEN’S BOOK STUDY Mike Schwendeman, Dick Brown, Chuck Davis, Don Hoines, Earl Johnson, Jerry Barney, Bob Ransdell, Rev. Don Meador Not pictured: Frank Wilson

In early 2015 a new men’s book study group was formed. The men have met on the second Wednesday of each month and have just completed a year-long study of the book I Love Getting Older But I’ll Never Grow Old by J. Ellsworth Kalas. On Wednesday, March 9 the group will begin a new book: Quiet Strength by Tony Dungy, former professional football player and head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Indianapolis Colts. Please join us in the Infant Care Room at 10:00 a.m. For more information, please contact Senior Adult Ministries at 281.297.5935.

GAITHER VOCAL BAND

The Senior Adults enjoyed another great performance by the Gaither Vocal Band at Second Baptist Church on January 22, 2016. Before the show the group ate dinner at Cleburne Cafeteria in Houston.

“I guess I just aint got no quittin’ sense. I just gotta keep on keepin’ on!” That was the response to a question I had asked a fellow minister when I served a small church in Jacksonville, Texas. He pastored a small African-American congregation north of town. He had also developed a very successful ministry called “God’s Storehouse” which supplied groceries and clothing for neighbors in need. He was 90 years old. So I asked him why he didn’t just retire and take it easy. That’s when he talked about having no quittin’ sense. I thought about him when I received a note from a friend in a former church. He wanted to tell us about his mother and what she had done recently. She is 92 years old. She still belongs to a bowling league and she had just bowled a perfect 300, beating all of the younger members of her group. Have you even picked up a bowling ball lately? Oh, and just two years ago she had decided it was time to quit playing golf. But it should be noted that during her last year of golf she had hit three holes in one! I mention this because I am always inspired and excited to hear about seniors who seem to have “no quittin’ sense,” those who are able to just “keep on keeping on” and who do it in a grand style. We can all think of good reasons why we should quit doing what we have always done and it is difficult to give up things we really love to do. But sometimes we do that too soon. So, let’s take heart from the folks we know who don’t seem to have any “quittin’ sense” and let’s “keep on keeping on” as long as we can. Your friend,

Don Nancy Story and Ann Anthony
