You’ve probably heard … school starts soon! Way too soon!!! And the church is already gearing up for the fall. As August rushes past, we are preparing to set aside these lazy days of summer for the faster pace of the new fall season. With all this activity breaking out around us, this is a great time to start (or restart) attending church, a Sunday school class or a small group. There is no time like the present to take that bold step of faith. Have courage! Joining a new church, an existing class or a new group can seem like the greatest of all challenges for some of us. It can be intimidating to walk into a room full of folks you don’t know just yet. Even the social butterflies among us can be hesitant to step into a new faith experience. So it is up to us, those who are already involved, to create a safe “landing zone” for folks who are trying to get back into church, a Sunday school class or a small group. Indeed, hospitality is a gift we all share. We just need to remember what it feels like to be the new “kid” in town. Break out those name tags! Assign a friendly greeter to be waiting for new guests at the entrance to your classroom, and make sure to be the first to speak to someone you don’t recognize.

Lots of folks have been members of the church for many years, and yet they may still feel apprehensive about doing a new thing! Some really good folks are new to the church, and like all of us, they want to fit right in. So in this season of new beginnings, let’s roll out the welcome mat to those who will come with courage. Be the first to greet a new friend! With grace and peace,
Don and Kay Meador
