THE WOODLANDS METHODIST CHURCH
THESENIORPOINT THE WOODLANDS METHODIST CHURCH
A MESSAGE FROM
MARK SORENSEN Walking out the door this morning on my way to the church, the weather lady warned me that there would be lots of fog out on the roads and to be careful. I was amazed at how limited the visibility actually was. In fact, driving in on Research Forest, I saw the flashing of police car lights and as I passed those flashing lights, there were two different accidents caused by the limited visibility. Fog can be a dangerous thing! As I pulled into the church parking lot, I said a quick prayer of thanks to the Lord for getting me safely to my destination and, getting out of the car, the sun began to poke through, and I saw an image of our cross on top of the dome. So, I snapped a picture with my phone. The picture brought to mind a Scripture. In 1 Corinthians 13, the apostle Paul was speaking of the love that God has for us. The type of love he talks about is Agape love. It’s the covenantal love that God has with His children. Nothing breaks that love. Paul reminds the believers in Corinth to hold to that picture of agape love remembering that, at times, the brokenness of the world can limit our perspectives of God at work in the world. Look at how the Message translation of 1 Corinthians 13:12 reads: “We don’t yet see things clearly. We’re squinting in a fog, peering through a mist. But it won’t be long before the weather clears and the sun shines bright! We’ll see it all then, see it all as clearly as God sees us, knowing him directly just as he knows us!” And this is where that verse comes in. As we travel the roads of life, there are times it’s nice and clear with the sun shining bright. Oftentimes, we can see far ahead, and the views are wonderful! That’s the type of life that everyone wants, right? A picture-perfect path with no dangers in sight. Yet, there are also those times where the road becomes rough and it’s difficult to see the path ahead. An illness, job loss, hardships, misunderstanding and hurts happen in our lives, and they can limit our perspectives. In those times, we can’t see what’s ahead. It’s as if we’re looking through a dark glass or traveling through a fog as I did this morning. So what do you do in these moments? You keep your hands on the wheel and keep your eyes straight ahead. Remember that God is in control of your future and path and is guiding your every step. Psalm 37:23 says the following, “The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in Him.” Isn’t that an incredible verse of comfort? I truly believe that the Lord doesn’t want us to fear the road ahead. He has given us everything we need to keep us moving forward on the path He has laid out for us all. The good news as the new year begins is this: we may not know what the future holds, but as believers in Jesus Christ, we know who holds the future. Let’s keep our eyes on Jesus, friends.
