SENIOR ADULT FLU SHOT CLINIC
by Rev. Joy Johnston Pastor of Caring Ministry and Special Needs Ministry
• What was his end game?
Where did the summer go? It seems like time flies by, and another season is gone before I get a chance to enjoy it. I love the month of October because the long months of broiling heat are over, and the soft cool breezes of fall are just around the corner. I also love October because it is a time to slow down after summer vacations and just before the busyness of the Christmas season. Psalm 37:7 tells us to “Be still before the Lord, and wait patiently for him.” As we enter October, I invite you to join me and take time to be still before the Lord and to rest in God’s peace. It is in moments of rest and peace that we find spiritual nourishment and refreshment from the busyness of everyday life.

THE WOODLANDS METHODIST CHURCH
• Did it have to be this difficult?
Reading this got me thinking:
THESENIORPOINT
I’m currently reading the works of C.S. Lewis with my 9-year-old son. Before moving onto the more wellknown Narnia series, I have chosen to start with Lewis’ autobiography. I’ve done this for two reasons: One, because hearing the backstory of one of the greats will make the adventure that much more spectacular, and two, his rolling verse would lull even the most astute listener to sleep within minutes. This past week I read an insanely long sentence, and as I gasped for breath, I couldn’t help but laugh. The sentence runs on for 85 words, and while it is not the longest sentence in the world by far, I’d like to challenge you to read it in one breath! Lewis is reminiscing about how he and his brother did not like to go to the neighborhood dances. He says:
WHEN NECESSARY
And I kept my rule only too well; a giggling and gurgling imitation of the vapidest grown-up chatter, a deliberate concealment of all that I really thought and felt under a sort of feeble jocularity and enthusiasm, was henceforth my party manner, assumed as consciously as an actor assumes his role, sustained with unspeakable weariness and dropped with a groan of relief the moment my brother and I at last tumbled into our cab and the drive home (The only pleasure of the evening) began.
by Rev. Chris McLain Pastor of Caring and Senior Adult Ministry
I wonder if we don’t often find ourselves in a place where we do not have the theological vocabulary to argue our point, and in turn, it doesn’t get argued or we stop with too few words.
OCTOBERHAPPY
OCTOBER 2022 EDITION THE WOODLANDS METHODIST CHURCH
I think about Mark 2 when the disciples are caught “working on the sabbath” and a theological conversation ensues. It is a time when change is coming, when the law of Moses is being not challenged, but fulfilled (Matthew 5). Therefore, in the fullness of the law, Jesus must refute the religious leaders and remind them that their hearts are in the wrong place.
“Be still before the Lord, and wait patiently for him.” —Psalm 37:7 (NRSV)
I want to challenge you to pick up some theological reading again. Mere Christianity, Wesley for Armchair Theologians or John Wesley’s Sermons: An Anthology are all great places to hop back on the Wesleyan Theological Train. And who knows, maybe we will work up to Narnia.
There’s a quote which has been thrown around over the years that has been refuted but is still often attributed to St. Francis of Assisi: “Preach the gospel at all times and when necessary, use words.”
